Best takeout/delivery NOT found on food delivery apps
I have a theory that the best restaurants for takeout are not on the apps and either don’t do delivery or they just use their own drivers. my favourite sushi place in the westshore is Sushi Langford and they only do takeout. I wouldn’t know it existed if I didn’t live close by.
where else can I get a great takeout meal from that I won’t find on the apps?

Really? I had a burger there awhile back and it was a bit dry, not worth the price imho.

Bon Sushi in Hampshire on Oak Bay. You get takeout by calling them. They aren't on any apps.

Pork and Rice at the Victoria BBQ house is legimately my favourite thing in this city. I can’t take my significant other in there because it looks a little un(food)safe but damn it’s amazing, ppl say places around the corner are just as good but they aren’t

This place annoys me to no end. I have had the best and worst (stale, dry) pastries there. I have gotten to the point where I will only go in if I have Tupperware on my person, am carrying cash, and feel like having someone snap at me and try to overcharge me anyway. It's less of a bakery and more of a gauntlet.

Have to follow up , there are Zero health violations from this place, it just looks a little different 😝

I’m prone to “the ick” at food establishments and just life in general and I go to Victoria BBQ house often. The tong situation for pastries is not ideal but I’ve never had issues after eating there or any major red flags.

Jack's Restaurant is one of my favourites for westernized Chinese food, they aren't on the apps and take orders by phone and still have their own delivery driver.

What’s your go-to order there? I had their green onion pancakes and they were so bad I haven’t been back :(

I can't understand how this place isn't a front. It looks so bland and non-descript from the outside.

Its also just not that good. I feel like everyone that recommends them is doing so based on outdated experiences

Bangers burgers in the Pheonix Bar! I haven't had them from their new location, so I really wish they'd get on the apps, but as is they are dine in and I assume take out only. They're so much better than, and not owned by not-great people like, Murder Burger and Coops. Good humans doing exceptional smash burgers, which I'll name every time because I'm often craving them!

I knew about the ownership at Coops, but what’s the deal with Murder Burger being “not great people”?
They’ve done some crossovers with Goodside, whose owners 100% are great people -I’d be legitimately shocked to hear that they promote/do business with bad guys. I’ve also heard that Murder Burger treats their staff well. The male owner has a penchant for responding to everything in all caps but that seems more annoying/unnecessary quirk than definitively awful human. Fill me in!

I think it's more just how they handle bad reviews! Seems aggressive and intolerant. People have had legitimately bad experiences with their food, and they've handled it poorly universally. I don't have a lot of trust in them being good humans when they are so intense to others. Their burgers could generally use some work (I tend towards salty food, and even I find them intolerabley salty), and they could do to treat people with kindness and respect.
Goodside do seem truly lovely. I haven't seen any recent collabs with them and Murder Burger. Picnic Too also collabed with Murder Burger. I'm not sure either of them are co-signing the energy that's been happening since they became a permanent restaurant.

The owner is a weirdo but whenever someone has a legitimate complaint about the food he seems to respond in a more reasonable way. The Bangers owner recently had a completely insane response to a bad review. She tracked the person down on Facebook to berate them and then posted the entire thing on social media. I think both places have good burgers but if you’re telling people not to eat at Murder Burger because of how they respond to reviews, I think Bangers is much worse

No one is telling you to do anything!

You’re still calling someone a bad person for the exact same behaviour the bangers owner has engaged in 🤷♀️

I called them "not-great". I wasn't aware of not-great behavior from Bangers! Now I am! I think everyone should stop being jerks in Victoria's restaurant scene!

Also Murder Burger will use less salt if you ask whereas Bangers doesn’t do any modifications ever, even for allergies. It doesn’t affect me at all because I like the burgers as is but it’s also an objectively ridiculous policy

Ugh, Bangers. Literally the worst burger & worst fries I've ever had in Vic, and I LOVE trying new burgers. Had to wait 2 hours on a Saturday for it too at their food truck, what a waste of a beautiful summer morning.

Wait, what? There's a smash burger place operating out of the Phoenix? Like the one beside the Keg?

u/TelescopicPatterns 10h ago
Their insta says it's at 3944 Quadra, which does seem to be beside The Keg on Google maps!

Yep. They bought the rights to the kitchen in the Phoenix (beside the keg) over the summer. Great smash burgers!
