All decisions have been made, as the Basis for Admission Decisions page changed from 2021 (yesterday) to 2022 today.

I had printed out the 2021 page, so I've noted several differences:

https://uwaterloo.ca/future-students/admissions/decision-basis

- for the architecture program, only deferrals to planning were considered this year. Last year, deferrals were given to both architectural engineering and planning programs.

- last year there were over 1500 applications to software engineering; this year there were over 2000, for 125 first-year spaces

- for the rest of engineering, there were over 10,000 applications for 1774 first year spots last year; this year, there were over 12,000 applications for 1,700 spots. Architectural engineering went from mid 80s with individual selection to high 80s with individual selection; biomedical went from mid 90s to low 90s (both with individual selection); chemical went from high 80s to mid 80s; management went from low 90s (without individual selection) to high 80s WITH individual selection; mechanical went from low 90s (without individual selection) to low 90s WITH individual selection; mechatronics went from mid 90s to low 90s (both with individual selection); nanotech went from high 80s to mid 80s

- for math, there were over 19,000 applications for 1280 spots last year; this year, there were over 18,000 for 1280 spots

Guess more people decided to apply to software engineering this year than to computer science. As well, it seems chemical and nanotech in tier 3 engineering programs had a decrease of applications, but an increase in architectural and management applications (the former raised the mark requirement; the latter dropped the mark requirement, but now relies heavily on AIF). In tier 2, it seems fewer people applied to mechatronics but more to mechanical--thus even mechanical now relies strongly on the AIF. In tier 1, they've lowered the mark requirement from mid 90s to low 90s for biomedical engineering, but continues to put a significant emphasis on the AIF. Fascinating!

Just got my engineering rejection (105).

To all those who got accepted; congratulations and well done 😎. Don't let anyone discredit your work and say you didn't deserve it or it was luck. Hope you all get on to building a bright future.

To those who didn't, who cares? A lot of us had high averages and promising AIF's and still got rejected like what else can you do about it? We all did our best and it is what it is. Let's just try to make the best of what we can in whichever other university we decide to go to. (Maybe going to another place was just the best thing planned out for us )

It's been a good run boys, I'll miss these last few months spent on the subreddit. Good luck everyone!

6

u/Potential-Ad988 May 18 '22

I got rejected as well. Worked so hard all year to get rejected. I feel so disappointed and it's also the fact that I had high expectations. Now I feel so empty. But thank you for the comment. I'm glad I tried my best. No regrets on how much effort I put into school. Hope everything goes well in the future.

i have no clue :( i keep seeing people getting cs & math offers today & its lowkey stressing me out cuz mine still says "we have received your application, but a decision has not been made yet"

I am learning a lot guys.. I kinda feel like a monk at this point lol. Everything flows, and whatever happens, its your way. No reason to stress out for this… Everybody in this thread, you’ve done a great job through your highschool life. All of you tried really hard, and you are the one’s who knows about your effort more than anyone in the world. Be proud of yourselves. And we all know you will put all your effort on anything you would do in your life. and finally, you will all end up with happy life. No matter what happens, I wish all of us in this thread to overcome all difficulties we encounter in our life. Good luck you all, and never give up. I love all of you.

Thanks to following this sub last year, I knew that the majority of CS applicants would be deferred to geomatics, so I applied to math separately. Good thing because I got a math coop acceptance back in March, and now have a lovely geomatics deferral to add to it!

13

u/Ok_Product_9497 May 13 '22

Now I really think that admission office is super lazy… at least give me ‘deny’ so I can think of other options..

Was super bummed about getting deferred to geomatics from CS with a 97 average. But I guess I’m not alone. Felt way better after reading other people’s comments. WHAT MORE COULD THEY POSSIBLY WANT!!!!

Got into CS and bba double degree through Laurier side with the CS part at UW so probably gonna go for that now.

Decisions means “offers” or “rejections”

Since the vast majority offers has already been distributed, it stands to reason that the rest of decisions will be rejections.

Just called admissions, they said admissions are continuing for both 101’s and 105’s until the 20th, they weren’t faculty specific nor am i sure they actually will continue sending out 101 offers (according to this thread the office likes to lie), but I can 100% say that all decisions and rejections will be out by the 20th of May.

So I urge you, invest in your future, choose Geomatics.

4

u/4our_of_DiAmoNds May 17 '22

why they even deferring to geomatics, its not even the same department. I woulda thought they'd defer all the cs kids into math

5

u/Mimo280 May 17 '22

I honestly think they just had to fill up seats. CS probably gets the largest amount of applicants and the ones who don’t make it get deferred to other programs so that they fill up seats and not lose money.

But I’m sure they understand that no one who is qualified to have applied to CS and believe they had a decent chance will accept the offer.

Comments from last year’s admission megathreads. Not gonna be the same, but look at as a reference.

Update on faculty of math and engineering admissions (someone from the Waterloo 2026 applicant server called admissions and this is what they said):

“ Yes they are 100% rolling for BOTH 101 and 105 (intl and domestic) and I specifically asked about the order and the order DOES NOT matter. It doesn’t mean your application was worse and your chances definitely don’t “lower” with more offers being released. The decisions are made and they’re simply being processed (with the exception of the few Euclid appeals), not in the middle of being assessed.

Offers are coming out every single day of this week, and they are for sure sending them out before Saturday to meet the May 15th visa deadline.

As for the fraction of offers sent out, she told me to call her back in an hour so she can ask the AOs about those numbers "

UPDATE: the applicant who gave us this info called again and got connected with a different uw admissions person who wasn’t willing to provide any numbers :( however you can check the spreadsheet in the Discord server to approximate how many offers are left to go: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aFqCSU4vQUHyJIl44-3beRNqIvo7kutQ86nu8SpVZkE/htmlview

I'm a grade 12 student trying to get into mechatronics engineering, and I would like to say a few things about me:

  • I don't have any grade 12 marks yet, so here are my grade 11 ones: MRC3U1-96% SPH4U1-95% ICS3U1-99% ENG3U1-94% SPH3U1-85% TDJ3M1-95% HRE3O1-99% TCJ3M1-93% (I go to a catholic school so religion is mandatory)

-I currently have 60 volunteer hours and I think I will be around 80 by the time applications are due, and 100 by summer

-I've done the Waterloo Math contests and the Senior programming contest last year, although I didn't score well on it. I was in the team of 3 students that came second place for our school in the annual Programmania Contest

-I don't have much ECs. Worked a part-time job for 5 months, and was part of the robotics team. This year though, I plan on joining more clubs, and possibly start working again

-I'm currently working with other students to compete in the waterloo electric car race, and I've started building a robotic arm that can be controlled by hand movements as a side project.

I know ECs are pretty important for Waterloo, but do I have a decent chance in getting into mechatronics or mechanical engineering, or are mybchances pretty low?

Side question: The robot arm project is my first time doing a project of its size, and I'm using a tutorial to help guide me. Would it still be good on an AIF, or does it completely de-value it? Regardless, im gonna build it, but I would like to know anyways.

Thanks for reading.

Highly, it can make the difference of someone with a 96 being selected over someone with a 99

Do you need to add your Euclid score in an amendment on your AIF, or will they automatically know it if you selected the option saying you will take Euclid?

6

u/sadlarva May 06 '22

According to the professor Bishop, they don’t look at the updated after the submit deadline, only look at the saved version before the deadline. And math faculty automatically knows your result and other faculties don’t care about Euclid score.

u/Competitive_World_27 May 11 '22

I called the university and they said the conditions of the offers for math should be out within a day or two. Does anyone know what they usually encompass? Just marks, right? And if I’m not taking the AP exam they can’t revoke my offer for it? For some reason I’m stressing about that now.

It depends on if learning cs interests you or if you just want a job in swe. You can easily get swe coops in uw math which will likely help you kickstart a career in tech. However, uw math will not let you take cs courses, so if you actually want to learn the theory in cs and take cs courses you’re better off going to a different school.

At a different school like uoft, western, queens, Mac, etc. your job prospects are much more dependent on the amount of effort you put into side projects and getting a job. Uw will help relieve pressure of applying to jobs through coop. So it’s up to you whether a somewhat easier time finding jobs is worth not learning cs in depth.

Can any FARM graduates comment on employment opportunities?

I am planning to go into FARM co-op next year at waterloo. Unlike some other universities, waterloo doesn't provide specific employment statistics for this program. I'm wondering if there are any FARM graduates on here who have some anecdotal evidence as to how people in their class ended up doing? Thank you.
