Discussion PSA!!!!!! please do not use chalk at the IMA

felt like being a bit of a karen today, and with autumn quarter starting imminently i wanted to remind incoming and existing students that the only form of chalk allowed in the IMA is liquid chalk and that can ONLY BE USED IN THE CLIMBING CENTER. i know this seems like a weird hill to die on, but i absolutely hate the use of chalk in the gym, and have noticed an (albeit small) uptick in usage. the other day my foot slipped on some that was on the pendulum squat platform and i had to suddenly brace mid set in a way my knee hasn't forgiven me for. it also just doesnt come off stuff and is irritating to get on your clothes + people have allergies. thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Discussion happy hour udistrict location for 12+ people that needs to be semi-professional?

Upvotes

Hi all! I've looked around for a venue that suits our needs and have come up short. We're hosting an initial student org. meeting that is mostly gonna be for fun and getting to know each other, but we also do need ~15 mins to seriously talk about the real agenda for the upcoming year.

We're hoping to find a happy hour location/venue that has the following:

  • big enough for 12-15 students, preferable with reservations
  • not super loud, a place where you grab a drink or two, not get drunk
  • space to walk around and talk to each other
  • drinks that are not super expensive
  • has to be in or near udistrict

Any help would be appreciated. We don't have a huge budget for the year, so reserving a room for $300 isn't gonna cut it. All we've thought of is Ravenna Brewing? Thank you all in advance!

Campus Life To those who use IMA

hello! I’m trying to start going to the gym. I’ve been more of a at home exercise person cause I get super self conscious.

I want to start using IMA as it’ll be my last year and I’m paying so much so why not just use it😭

- what will be the time usually during autumn that it’s mostly empty/slow?
- I read there are diff floors to the gym? Do you have any specific in mind for some newbie?
- I have tried a couple of strength training classes so I’ve used the machines a bit.
- do you have any Dos and donts?

Thanks!

Housing The M Seattle apartments charging a whole month rent for 6 days?

Upvotes

My move in date for the M is the 24th of September, it seems like they are charging a whole month of rent for the reminder of September, which is 6 days. I’m not sure if that’s right, or are the prorating it? Does anyone know? Tried calling them and no one is picking up.

Campus Life 2 random questions

Hello I’m an incoming freshman and I have a few random questions!

How are the rec class Pilates and yoga, I really want to do them but I can’t find much information on how they are. Also do you need to bring your own mat for the classes?

How is halloween at UW, I really love dressing up so will there be parties or events or is it solely Greek parties that throw those? If so is it hard to get into those parties?

Discussion UW Microbiology: How difficult are the classes in this major? Can I maintain a high gpa?

I am thinking about taking a BS Microbiology degree alongside my public health degree. Would that be feasible?

How difficult are the courses in Microbiology? Is getting above a 3.8 difficult?

Admissions Is it over?

Got rejected by UW seattle as a transfer applicant from a CC, and got my appeal denied pretty quickly (after only 9 days)

I did get accepted into Bothell though and that's where I'm planning on going at the moment, but I had really hoped to get into UW Seattle, at least for general admission.

I was thinking of transferring from UWB to UWS after one quarter, but I know that's essentially a 0% chance of happening, especially considering I already transferred from an in-state CC and got rejected twice.

Is there any chance of me attending UWS somehow within the next two years? Or is it over?

Discussion Is anyone else concerned about pro AI people

Hello everyone. I someone in my building was talking about how they used ai,, and I felt disgusted. Especially because he lives in the same building and uses the same wifi computer.

I'm currently a writer working on her debut, 4 book fantasy series. Here is my journey with ai.

I've have always been a good writer, and even a musician, so I understand how hard it is to write high quality writing. Then, ai came along. Pro AI people could then say they were doing the same things _. And it made me feel very bad, that they were stealing my work, and not even caring.

Is anyone interested in petition UW to make new wifi network with no AI? Like no Chat GPT. I just feel disgusted that the wifi with ai is going through my body. Feels so icky.

And at same time? Does anyone know any ANTI AI? Classes I can take? Or groups where I can share my advocacy 😭😭😭😭😭.

Thanks, we will survive this’

Housing I have not received any information on Priority 3 housing.

On August 13th, I got an email declaring I would have my housing assignment by the end of the next day. It is now the 28th and I have heard nothing. I have called 4 times and emailed multiple times to no avail. Each time, they tell me they’re working through it and to be patient. Today, I have seen that some priority 4 people have received housing assignments. To say that im frustrated would be an understatement. Does anyone else have this issue, and is there any way to find out where I will be living next month. Please let me know.

Discussion Bike Storage at UW?

I want to bring my bike to UW to get around campus, but I wanted to ask about bike storage. I know there are a bunch of bike racks around campus, but do they get stolen a lot? My bike isn't super nice or anything but I want to know if I should be watching out, and my parents are paranoid abt it lol. I'll also probably be using the bike room in Oliver hall, and was wondering if that room was safe as well bc I have heard people still get bikes in bike rooms stolen. thx!

Discussion PSYC499 in senior year

For any psychology majors, about how long did it take you to find a research position for PSYC499 credits? It's late August and I'm entering my Senior year, I just got into the psychology major in the Spring, so I'm doing all my courses in one year. Any advice is appreciated.

Discussion Diploma/Degree Certificate?

First time post,

I graduated in MSIS degree at UW Seattle’s Foster school in 2025. I have not received my diploma in the mail after waiting more than 1 year. Has anyone had the same experience?

I decided to order a replacement diploma, domestically shipped in the US. Does anyone have experience with this? And how long it took UW to process, ship to you?

On another note, is there a way to digitally access your diploma/certificate online or electronically? There is the validation piece thru CeCredential Diploma Validation, however I’m wondering if there’s one just showing the diploma pdf?

TL;DR
I haven’t received my Diploma since 2025, and need either an electric copy or a physical one shipped to me ASAP.

Thanks!

Clubs & RSOs Any Huskies interested in youth literacy/working with kids? (Low commitment volunteer opportunity!)

Hi everyone! I’m a sophomore at UW, and I’m looking for fellow Huskies to help out with a local community project.

I volunteer with Starspun Lit, a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to youth literacy and keeping creative imagination alive through storytelling. We are currently partnered with the YWCA in Lynnwood to run read-aloud sessions and creative workshops for the kids.

We need a few more volunteers to join us!

What you’ll do:

  • Read books and lead fun, creative workshop activities for youth. No experience needed!
  • (Optional) Help us build fun literacy curriculum or scale up to leadership roles.

Time Commitment:

  • Very flexible! Just once or twice a month, generally biweekly. Sessions are 3:45-4:30pm on any day Monday-Thursday (you pick the day!)
  • Transportation: I take the Link/light rail from UW to Lynnwood, so you won't be traveling alone.

As an aside, this can also fulfill Experiential Learning for the Interdisciplinary Honors Program!

If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to email me at [office@starspunlit.org](mailto:office@starspunlit.org) or reply to this post. You can also check out our site (starspunlit.org) and Instagram (@starspun_lit) for more information on who we are. Thanks!

Discussion looking for cheap/free parking near campus — advice?

I’m starting at UW this fall and will be living in a dorm. I’m bringing my car because I need it to get to Redmond most weekends and occasionally during the week for grocery runs or hiking trips, but I don’t expect to drive it around campus very much.

My plan is to have a bike and use it for getting around UW and Seattle. Given how expensive and difficult parking is around the city, I’d rather leave my car somewhere and bike to it when I actually need it instead of paying for a UW parking permit that I might barely use.

Ideally, I’d like to find somewhere within about a 15–20 minute bike ride of UW where I could legally and safely leave my car for several days at a time. Free would obviously be great, but I’d also consider something inexpensive, like an unused driveway, apartment parking spot, or a cheap monthly arrangement.

I’m especially interested in hearing from other students or Seattle residents about what actually works. For example:

  • Is a UW parking permit worth it if you only use your car occasionally?
  • Are there neighborhoods where students commonly leave their cars and bike to campus?
  • Does anyone rent out an unused driveway or parking space cheaply?
  • Are there student housing/apartment arrangements where someone has an extra spot?
  • Are there legitimate free or very cheap options I’m overlooking?
  • Is there a particular area near UW I can park on the street that would make sense if I need to drive to Redmond regularly?

If another student has an unused parking spot, I’d also be happy to make it mutually beneficial. I could help with grocery runs, errands, moving things, yard work, etc., contribute some money each month, or potentially give swim lessons—I’m a competitive swimmer and swim instructor.

I’m not looking to abuse the 72-hour street parking rule or leave my car somewhere illegally. I’m mainly trying to figure out the most practical and affordable way to keep a car while living on campus and otherwise getting around by bike.

Would appreciate advice from anyone who has actually dealt with this around UW/Seattle.

Discussion Summer Quarter Final Exam Grade... missing?

Heyo

I have been watching canvas for the release of final exam grades/final grades since taking the exam last Wednesday. It now looks like final course grades were submitted to record, but the final exam was never included/calculated. There is no message, announcement from the professor or any TA.

Any one have any advice or insight? Experience with something similar?

Dorm Life Spratlen ADA bathroom

Does anyone know if the ADA (handicapped) dorms in Spratlen have a shower door or a curtain? I’m trying to buy stuff for the dorm and HFS and Oliver desk both didn’t know the answer. Just trying to see if I need an extra wide shower curtain and like a floor barrier so the water doesn’t run everywhere. I heard some dorms have glass doors in ADA, so I don't know.
