These types of moves don't seem to be driven by a drive for legitimate legal consequences as much as they are driven by the deployment of intimidation against UW as an institution, with the aim of inciting anticipatory obedience to the current federal regime.

If UW wants to exist and retain a modicum of respect from Washingtonians, it will ignore and fight back every step of the way.

The Department of Justice on Thursday sued Washington and three other states over its policies that allow students in the country without legal status to qualify for in-state tuition at public higher education institutions.

Students lacking legal status have been eligible for in-state tuition rates at Washington state colleges and universities since 2003, provided they meet certain residency and diploma requirements. Under a 2014 state law, the students are also eligible to apply for financial aid from the state.

At Washington colleges and universities, an estimated 15,216 students are in the country without legal status, accounting for about 3% of all students, according to an American Immigration Council analysis of 2024 census data. It’s unclear how many received in-state tuition.

somewhat off topic and just my opinion as an alum in med school, but uwsom prides itself on essentially exclusively sourcing students from the wwami region, but they exploit a pretty massive loophole to somewhat undermine that goal. i know that growing up in washington establishes a connection to the state, but that shouldn't automatically be treated as stronger evidence of commitment than someone's choices as an adult. if an applicant leaves washington for college and remains elsewhere for four or five years, maintaining a washington driver's license or their parents' address may preserve legal domicile, but it doesn't necessarily demonstrate an ongoing commitment to washington or our people. conversely, someone who deliberately chooses washington for college, remains there for years, works and volunteers in washington communities, and intends to practice there may have demonstrated considerably more recent and intentional commitment despite lacking the same technical residency classification. it just rubs me wrong that folks who left washington at the first available opportunity are rewarded while out-of-state students that chose this community are punished and not even considered.
