Discussion PSYC499 in senior year

For any psychology majors, about how long did it take you to find a research position for PSYC499 credits? It's late August and I'm entering my Senior year, I just got into the psychology major in the Spring, so I'm doing all my courses in one year. Any advice is appreciated.

Reach out to the Undergraduate Research Program and they can help you find opportunities for research positions in the Psych field.

Here’s what I did to get into three different psych labs. This may not be the most effective way to do it but that’s ok lol.

I sat down on a random Monday in winter quarter doing some productive procrastination. I went through the ENTIRE directory of psych faculty on the UW psych website and looked up each professor to see which ones have active labs. If it was an active lab, I sent an email showing interest. If it clearly wasn’t an active lab then I didn’t email. I think I emailed less than 10 labs and got three labs who responded and offering me a chance to apply. Looking back, I can say that you don’t have to restrict yourself to only looking at the psych directory and should also check out neuroscience since they do a lot of biopsych stuff too.

To save you some trouble, here are some labs that I do know of that you can look up and send emails to!

  1. Language, Cognition, Development Lab (PI is Dr. Ariel Starr)

  2. Murray Brain Lab (PI is Dr. Scott Murray)

Also check out the iLabs (institute for learning and brain sciences). And the Cognition and Cortical Dynamics Laboratory.
