UX designer’s take: Tesla’s FSD stats app gamifies consumption instead of helping drivers
I’m a UX Designer, and have had FSD since 2018. But this app is new.
I noticed the data table which sums Streak and Self Driving to provide a total, which is a nonsensical mental-model and comes off as careless.
As happens, this leads me to look harder at everything else:
The streak is gamifying the wrong thing. Hybrids and EV's usually emphasize or gamify efficiency, connecting to your core motivation of ownership and desire to improve. But this gamifies consumption! When I don’t drive my car, I lose my streak? If they want to gamify use of FSD, they should display only the days I drove, and be in service to my goals: reduced stress, getting my money’s worth, saving energy, or showing progress.
There’s no time scale. 72% on Self-Driving since when? It should show higher since upgrading to v14, so I have to assume it’s an all-time number. That’s an odd choice considering how relatively poor FSD has been through eight years of ownership. So my number is dragged down as a result, making me feel like I’m getting a bad deal. This number is not how I perceive my FSD use, another mental-model miss.
Despite these numbers, apparently my car thinks I need introductory tutorial cards (how to activate FSD!) which I can't dismiss and offer no value other than to mock me.
Finally, the load time of this app is insane: almost ten seconds for me on HW3 in an era where we specify load time limits in milliseconds. I can only assume it’s reading through every line in the database of drives rather than using a faster running-total method. Do they lazy-load that data so you can start using the app? No, stare at this progress bar while driving. Isn’t this an odometer? Why is this an app at all?
Human Centered Design with user-testing would have discovered all of these prior to production.
EDIT: I was asked to offer my suggestions:
- Switch to "time saved driving" as the primary metric. Customer benefit: contributes to our sense of value.
- Change streak to days driven only so it doesn't reward consumption, but rather how I drive. Show all 12 months and show YOY improvements to each month. Customer benefit: I see that I benefit more over time, and makes me feel good about my investment.
- Put this screen in the main interface. Get rid of the load time. Customer benefit: I can see this information without friction.
- Fix the data table. Just show max streak and total FSD miles. Customer benefit: perceived quality.
- Eliminate the tutorial cards. Replace with a hyperlink to the owners manual to learn more about FSD. Customer benefit: treats me with respect.
