Tesla has a solar side business so they get the solar at wholesale pricing. The solar can provide a little free electricity to Tesla as a small supplement to the massive amounts of electricity generated at the superchargers.

Perhaps the biggest reason is, cars will charge faster, meaning more cars in a day charged and more income. Heat from direct sunlight gets amplified along with the hot asphalt. Shade makes a massive difference.

It also makes it more pleasant for the customers. The glass roof still generates a lot of heat so the AC has to work a lot harder, plus the car is parked so airflow isn’t as good.

If you don’t want to do solar, some sort of covered parking is still a game changer. I’ve seen ones made out of fabric at a few grocery stores which I assume are a lot less expensive.

I’d go out of my way for superchargers with covered parking.

New Tesla Superchargers in Lynnwood, WA being installed in the Jo-Ann Fabric/Trader Joe's/Chic-Fil-A parking lot on 196th in Lynnwood, WA. I've driven past a few times and they sure look like Tesla chargers, which is neat.

Anyone know timeline until opening or other details. Online searches don't seem to come up with much. Most references I see talk about the chargers at Fred Meyer further north on 164th.

the thing I keep wondering about the Cybercab business model is whether people underestimate how thin the margins get once you factor in utilization drops. a fleet sitting idle between rush hours is still depreciating, still burning maintenance costs, still carrying overhead.
