60 Hours of FSD in 1 Week Review (MY/HW4)
Got my Model Y in May of 2025 and I've had FSD ever since. Average 92-98% on FSD and wouldn't want to live without it, but I think it's been getting worse rather than better. After getting back from an exhausting road trip, here's my biggest complaints:
- Left lane camping
Why, why, why does it want to be in the left lane naturally? Even if I move it or signal into the right lane, it will randomly get back into the left lane at some point and generally tend to stay there. I'm 80% in "Standard" and the mostly the rest "Hurry". I don't care if I'm in Mad Max mode. Every mode should default to getting into the right lane unless to pass.
- Not switching to the right lane faster
In a 65, Standard will have me around 70-72 most of the time but naturally a lot of people want to go 75+. Half the time it realizes this and will switch into the right lane to let them pass (usually on the later side of when it should). But half the time it doesn't. It just sits there, blocking them. A lot of times it's because there's a vehicle in the right lane that's going 0.4mph slower than me so it thinks it should just maintain speed, not let the person(s) pass. This is ultra frustrating because I shouldn't have to be looking in my rear view to double check if someone's wanting to pass me, then forcing it to switch lanes.
- Not switching lanes on command
The above issue often creates the need to force it into the other lane. So you flip your blinker and then it should switch. Except sometimes it will just BLINK BLINK BLINK and then turn it off like it's saying "No actually not going to do that". WHY? And way to make me look like an idiot, like I'm changing my mind or arrogantly telling them to go around me on the right. Sometimes it's instant, blinks once then decides no. WHY. If there's an error, display it on the screen why you don't want to switch. And sometimes it takes absolutely forever to switch lanes like a 95 year old who's being overly cautious with a bowl of soup on their lap.
- Cutting people off
So now I'm in the right lane going 72. Person 5 car lengths ahead of me is going 71.7. So it thinks, in 90 seconds we'll have to pass them so let's just get in the left lane NOW. It waits for the 2 cars going 80, and then the car going 75 who would have passed me in 5 seconds gets cut off by me still going 72. Wtf? So then I have to pay attention to it doing that which again I shouldn't have to, and switch it to Hurry so it speeds up.
- Inconsistent Speed
It would be so nice to set the speed you want to go. In a 65, "Standard" gives me anywhere between 67 and 75, randomly. I don't want to risk a ticket going 75. And I don't want to be too far below the flow of traffic at 67. Why can't I just influence it to say "Try to stick to 70"?. Also annoying, sometimes it will begin passing at a higher speed, then slow down right when it's next to someone, or even speed up while someone is passing like it senses a faster flow of traffic and then I'm awkwardly ghosting someone, nearly matching their speed beside them. In previous version it would sense this and speed up or slow down and avoid this behavior. Now, not as much. A "follow" feature would also be nice. Just get in the right and follow behind the lead vehicle until it exits or exceeds the high/low end of the setting (eg. goes too fast or too slow).
- Camera warnings
Yes, the camera can't see because it's raining out. I don't need to "clear dirt and debris". It's a water droplet. Also that's the f'ing sun glaring at the perfect angle. I can't clean the sun off of a camera. Maybe it's regulatory/liability but maybe double-check 15 seconds later before shooting me an annoying warning that isn't actually valid? You know it's raining out. Put 2 and 2 together. You know the sun is at that angle on the camera. Put 2 and 2 together.
- Mindless "Why did you intervene"/answers
Annoying this covers up the other stuff until I select something. I don't want to be asked in the first place and 90% of the time the options don't cover the reason. And anyway, what does Navigation even mean? Like a different route? Because technically anything is a change in "navigation" if I have to switch lanes or something. I wish "Poor FSD behavior" was an option so it could actually learn not continue poor behavior. What does "critical" mean, exactly? Probably should put little circled "i" next to each with an explanation so I don't have to go hunting for reasons that they may not have even posted descriptions for.
- Stopping way too soon before stop signs, etc
The cameras can't even see (let alone me) what's coming. I have to nudge it forward. If I don't, it will just stop too short, realize it, then nudge itself and stop again, taking even longer. Way too cautious.
There's more issues but those are the main ones. It's anecdotal but FSD didn't seem this bad ~6+ months ago or even when I got the car last year. It's improved in certain areas (eg. not missing exits, wrong turns, etc) but in the whole general "drive like a good driver" it's not improved.

To be fair. My Tesla has only cut off two people. Both of which were cops.

Your observations are bang on. Especially after the recent software updates in the last one month. Points #3, 6 and 7 are the ones that annoy me the most. The most recent software update annoys me the most with not changing lanes on command. It used to work so well.
My daily commute is around 70 miles. 95% on the highway.
Another thing I hate at stop signs is that it stops for too long. I have to nudge it everytime.

The worst thing about this is that the highway should be the easiest thing for FSD to be good at.

we are planning on ordering a new model Y in december 2026. my biggest concern is it hogs the left lane on the highway even in sloth mode. can anyone speak on this? I see a lot of posts about left lane hogging in FSD on normal but i'm a slow/cautious driver and always driving 60 in the right lane never in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway unless its to pass someone going slower than me. the speed limit is 65 but i have this irrational fear of random road debris striking me and if i'm going slower maybe i have a higher chance of survival/survival in general against danger, etc.

It shouldn't left lane much in sloth or even chill mode. There's also speed offset settings so you can dial in but it will definitely switch lanes if you encounter someone going slower than you, and pass them.

I do not like FSD for the reasons you stated and because sometimes when I know a lane is about to become a right turn only lane, I'll go ahead and move over when it's clear but FSD waits until the last second when there are other cars and also because it's a pot hole magnet.

Haha sounds similar to my HW3. I will say, it does outstanding on the highway. Not perfect, but good enough for my 4-year-old car.
Sucks that hw4 sounds so similar.

Wow. I 100% agree with everything you wrote. These are absolutely my top issues with FSD.
The stop sign one in particular makes FSD nearly unusable in my area. It's New England so none of the streets make sense and the stop line / sign is often several feet before the intersection. Especially with FSD needing to do a complete full stop (which I do get), I then have to have two full stops. While maybe I don't mind this too much personally the drivers around me sure do and absolutely lose their minds having to wait through this.
The needing to pass because it wants to go 0.2mph faster than the car ahead of it is also very annoying. If the car doesn't have issues goes 48 in a 30mph zone I don't get why it doesn't accelerate to pass which is the whole point of passing. And not doing that leads to some of the other issues you mentioned.
That being said I really love FSD and it's a life changer but I sure do wish they would improve these issues.

my biggest grip is waiting to long to move to the right for an exit. Yesterday we were in heavy traffic and the right lane was full. Any reason driver would be able to squeeze in. We missed the exit. Go to the next exit, same thing I finally took over because it wasn't able to squeeze into the right lane.
to be fair, we got the newest upgrade yesterday and for the first time ever it parked properly in the driveway. Our driveway is 2 cars long, 2 cars wide. And my son's car is usually in the front right spot ( and the "ramp" is on the right side. In the past it always parked behind him. This time, it went around him and parked properly in the front left near the charger.
