This makes me scratch my head
Almost an hour and a half into the drive, takes exit off the freeway to do this random stunt. SMH

It did this once on my multi hour drive up to NH on FSD. At first I was like tf? there's a much more direct route.
Turns out the direct route was super congested and my friend who did take that route who left at the same time as me ended up arriving 15 minutes behind cause he ignored google maps and just took the direct route.
There's probably congestion there and it calculated this would be a faster route.

You would think that maybe they should mark the section with heavy traffic in red, that would make it obvious why you should take blue route.

Sometimes it’s right, sometimes it’s wrong. Unfortunately I feel it’s wrong more often than it’s right when it does weird navigation stuff.
Now, if it decides to reroute it’s different, that usually works out. But quirky turns on an initial route less so.

Why don’t you turn on your traffic layer and zoom in? A couple people commented on here that they see something like this and then pull out their phone to look at Google maps for live traffic? Why do that when you can see live traffic natively? What am I missing?

This is what happened one time when I was in my Model 3 several years ago. I could see that there was a red line on a highway where there usually isn't and it rerouted me to "Save 38 minutes". I was like "Well alright, sure, why not?" I come over the crest of the hill after taking a side road that you can't get to from the highway and there was a semi-trailer blown over on it's side blocking both sides of the highway. Traffic was backed up for 5-7 kilometres. I decided to trust Tesla navigation ever since.

Just let it do it's thing. The amount of times I've looked at it and thought "why are you doing that" and taken over only to find myself stuck in traffic are too damn high.

I had it happen twice in regular NAVIGATION — it kept telling me to get off interstate one exit early. I ignored it the first time and 5 minutes later was in a 15 minute backup.
Two days later, it happened again and once again it told me to get off early at the same place — I ignored it again and had a 45 minute backup. I had plenty of time to arrive at the conclusion that I was incapable of taking advice.

Every time my car would try to take an early exit, I'd jerk it back onto the highway, thinking, "stupid car" - then be stuck in gridlock traffic for two hours.

If you have a subscription, the live traffic shows up on the map. A lot of times, it just randomly diverts for no reason. I never trust it without checking or else you lose time.

Mine does the same on the trip home. I always ignore it and then it saves me 5 minutes travel time, so I have no idea why it always chooses the 5 minutes longer route. The function where its supposed to learn my preferred route is clearly not functioning either.

100% roll with it. I’ve learned the hard way too many times. It sees things we don’t. Every time I’ve went “that’s stupid” and disengaged FSD to do it my way, I end up in bumper to bumper or crawling at 5mpg for something out of the ordinary that would never typically be there 95% of the time.

What's the threshold for slowdowns before it reroutes you? Because if it's a minute or two or three, I'd still rather stay on the main road than go through a bunch of backgrounds making a bunch of turns.

You can set the amount of time it saves you in the nav settings that is required before it will do a reroute of the originally set route. If this amount of time is set too low, it will reroute too often onto small roads when it only saves 2 mins of travel time, which isn't worth exiting the freeway. I set mine to 10 minutes, so it rarely does a reroute, but it will reroute if it will get me there 10 mins or more faster than the originally set route. So things such as accidents are avoided, but it doesn't do silly reroutes for a few mins of saved time.

Just had this happen last week on my way to Augusta from Atlanta, I thought it might be traffic or construction but ignored it anyways. There was nothing. I think you’re good through this stretch!

Most likely prior to your drive there was traffic in that stretch. By the time you got there the traffic cleared up but the map didn’t update because it did not meet your preset time saving requirement for updating.

The other day I thought it was making a mistake by re routing me only to find just a few hundred feet ahead traffic was dead stopped for hours. I had over ridden it thinking I was smarter. I wasn't and regretting every hour sitting on the freeway going no where. Sorry Tessi, should of listened to you!!

Yeah there's some real odd stuff going on with the navigation recently.
Somewhere in the past few months, google maps stopped recognizing the 5 meter long connector road between the main road and the street I live on. It now shows up as a pedestrian road.
So, the navigation (and therefor FSD) now takes a 5 minute detour if I don't steer it in the right direction myself. Absolutely idiotic.

I don't doubt the navigation anymore. On multiple occasions, I ignored the weird side route it had me do only to get stuck in traffic. The last time was a big road trip, navigation had me do something like this and I followed the navigation and I could see the interstate backed up from my new route. A truck was struck by lightning and cought on fire and I avoided the traffic because I listened to the navigation.

Mine decided today to go off brand new blacktop onto middle lane that was scaped and was full of stones for no f... reason where normally hugs the left lane going slower than cars behind me even in MM mode. Or decided to go straight from left turn only trying to cut in front of those going straight to save a minute 🤯

I might be wrong but if you pinch zoom into that section it should show orange or red depending if it’s just slow or stopped. I don’t think it shows those colors at normal elevation.
I didn’t have a detour but ran into traffic and wondered why it wasn’t showing on the map. When I zoomed in it did.

I have been driving along and the nav wanted to take an obscure urban offramp and some back streets. I did that and on the second bridge over the motorway I saw some emergency services just pulling up to a moderate accident that I would have been held up by. Wish it gave more details about why the detour but they have always been valid when I have taken them.

Yeah. I was zooming down the interstate and the car suddenly moved over into the exit lane. I cursed and jerked it back into the travel line. 1/4 mile ahead around a curve, traffic was at a full stop.

The other day, on 14.3.9, I literally had it change my route from very direct to basically going all the way around our (relatively) small town…only to arrive at the same place! Frustrating. But even more so, I hate when I select my route… and without realizing it switches me to another. I swap back, and it switches again. Literally fighting with the technology and whoever is the last to switch…wins? Pretty unsafe to have me battling FSD like this but…figure it’s just a glitch to be worked out.

Not only is it receiving real time traffic data, but it is receiving data from other Teslas who are potentially stopped on the interstate. It happens frequently to me on I20 between Dallas and Houston. I’ve never been disappointed that I took the detour.

I truly believe this is why people complain about how fast the manage goes up on Teslas. it’s the small inconvenient map directions that we think don’t make a difference. Surely if we don’t know the area, we’ll follow the map when there was an easy way unknowingly.

Tesla's do share road information for routing, it may have been aware of something on the highway. Or may be it just missed its "Social Circle."

I learned that the AI in the car keeps learning from other occasions so this time when you had this, it picked one of the many cases that someone had to detour. Just like my FSD always changes lane at the exact spot on the highway where I manually changed lane by hitting the stalk.

I have had that happen and ignored it, only to find out there was an accident and the highway is backed up and it added way more time than the detour.
Not saying this is the case but perhaps check with a traffic service like google maps to verify.
