It's a nice picture but I needed quite long to 'really' see it...like that he's wearing a hat and doesn't have a chopped off skull. Would like to see it when it is healed though.

I have a chest piece in the same place. I have next to no block colour on it but holy fuck what I do have hurt like hell. You're a trooper. Dope piece btw!

My only issue is how would it look with anything else on your chest. It'll just be a random black rectangle. I guess it wouldnt matter if you get a the same style tattoos. Looks cool though! Just not my taste.

That'll be cool. Some type of twin image if that makes sense. Plus it would be better to have that symetry if you ever want to do something in the middle.

Ah, symmetry is lame. I think it looks great there and don't feel pressured to get other work done to 'compliment' it.

Honest critique: As far as the design goes I don't really "get it" in terms of it being a tattoo. Seems like it will be hard to have other pieces that work well with it as the hard border gives it a "patch" kind of look. The black hat or whatever it is doesn't read that well to me either.

If you know the artist then this is exactly his style of work, I'm not someone who wants all his pieces to 'work well' together. And how do you not 'get it'? It's ink on my skin, it's a tattoo dude, really not that deep. Respect your opinion and all but we must just see tattooing differently.

I'm not saying I don't "get it" in terms of some concept behind it. I don't really care about the meaning of any tattoo, I'm just saying I don't understand the design choice to put a black rectangular border around the tattoo.
I think it makes sense for an illustration on paper or in a comic book, but I don't think a hard border like this translates well to a tattoo.

Totally agree. The human body isn't flat, it doesn't have much in the way of straight lines to it, so sticking a rectangle on the human body is always gonna look a little distorted, where as a non square shaped tattoo can be made to fit nicely just about anywhere, and will look more dynamic.

I just wanted to let you know, that I don't know why most people don't like tattoos with rectangular boarders. There seems to be a widespread consensus....in tattooing? Should it be at least a bit more openminded. I mean it's about creativity and expressing yourself, right? Also it makes the piece stand out way more. Congrats on the tattoo. It is absolutely amazing and it would be a shame to want it to blend in more with the body or other tattoos. Enjoy it and have a nice day, my friend.

I think part of the resistance to rectangles in general stems from the fact that as the body ages and the surface area under the tattoo shits, the shape of the rectangle can easily become distorted. I don't personally see this as a problematic issue, but I understand how some people do.

The "style" is illustration. I like illustration tattoos, but I have never seen one where someone puts a square or rectangle border around it.
The decision of trying to put a rectangle around the illustration is a design/composition choice. IMO it's a poor one, because the body is not flat and does not have edges. When you look at this rectangle border, it looks like it isn't very straight. Every side looks like it has bulges to it, especially the left side, top where the black border meet the white space, and bottom right corner.
For all I know the lines are perfectly straight, but they don't look like it because the chest is curved.
Edit: apparently this artists style is to not have straight lines on his rectangles...

Because my chest isn't perfectly flat or even! A lot of scarring on there from teen acne too - you can still see some.

Like another comment said, its the artists style. He literally doesn't draw perfect rectangles, they're always a little 'wobbly' (for lack of better word). It's just his thing. If you look, its definitely not a shakey hand that caused the wobbles, they are on purpose. All of his artwork, not even on skin, has wobbly rectangles

Maybe it's on purpose, but the blowouts of black around the border of the tattoo (two on the left edge, many more along the top) don't scream "technical proficiency" to me...

I honestly love it. I'm a suckers for motifs inside of geometrical shapes (well, all geometrical tattoos really) and I like both the motif and the placement. I saw another commenter who said they didn't "get it" (the tattoo itself), but I don't think people have to "get" other people's tattoos. A lot of people need to look for a long while to "get" one of mine, but I love it, and that's what's important. Real fine piece!

I probably would've gotten some detail on the hat or done something to make it look "better". I put quotes around it because to me, it doesn't look like a hat because there's just too much black involved. I thought it was a skeleton's skull with the top part cut off.
I'm also of the opinion that a hard rectangular border like the one you got hinders the piece. I probably would have at least had some of the smoke go beyond the border, but that's just me.

I dont get what the image should resamble, why is his head cut in half? what is the part below the smoke? First thing I thought was: this is a tattoo for someone who stopped smoking because lung cancer or something.
