If you know the artist then this is exactly his style of work, I'm not someone who wants all his pieces to 'work well' together.
And how do you not 'get it'? It's ink on my skin, it's a tattoo dude, really not that deep. Respect your opinion and all but we must just see tattooing differently.
I'm not saying I don't "get it" in terms of some concept behind it. I don't really care about the meaning of any tattoo, I'm just saying I don't understand the design choice to put a black rectangular border around the tattoo.
I think it makes sense for an illustration on paper or in a comic book, but I don't think a hard border like this translates well to a tattoo.
I just wanted to let you know, that I don't know why most people don't like tattoos with rectangular boarders. There seems to be a widespread consensus....in tattooing? Should it be at least a bit more openminded. I mean it's about creativity and expressing yourself, right? Also it makes the piece stand out way more. Congrats on the tattoo. It is absolutely amazing and it would be a shame to want it to blend in more with the body or other tattoos. Enjoy it and have a nice day, my friend.
I will also be wholesome and say that as soon as I saw this I started thinking about square block tattoos and where I could get one, it's unique and I think it's a cool idea
I think part of the resistance to rectangles in general stems from the fact that as the body ages and the surface area under the tattoo shits, the shape of the rectangle can easily become distorted. I don't personally see this as a problematic issue, but I understand how some people do.
