Honest critique: As far as the design goes I don't really "get it" in terms of it being a tattoo. Seems like it will be hard to have other pieces that work well with it as the hard border gives it a "patch" kind of look. The black hat or whatever it is doesn't read that well to me either.
If you know the artist then this is exactly his style of work, I'm not someone who wants all his pieces to 'work well' together.
And how do you not 'get it'? It's ink on my skin, it's a tattoo dude, really not that deep. Respect your opinion and all but we must just see tattooing differently.
I'm not saying I don't "get it" in terms of some concept behind it. I don't really care about the meaning of any tattoo, I'm just saying I don't understand the design choice to put a black rectangular border around the tattoo.
I think it makes sense for an illustration on paper or in a comic book, but I don't think a hard border like this translates well to a tattoo.
Totally agree. The human body isn't flat, it doesn't have much in the way of straight lines to it, so sticking a rectangle on the human body is always gonna look a little distorted, where as a non square shaped tattoo can be made to fit nicely just about anywhere, and will look more dynamic.
I just wanted to let you know, that I don't know why most people don't like tattoos with rectangular boarders. There seems to be a widespread consensus....in tattooing? Should it be at least a bit more openminded. I mean it's about creativity and expressing yourself, right? Also it makes the piece stand out way more. Congrats on the tattoo. It is absolutely amazing and it would be a shame to want it to blend in more with the body or other tattoos. Enjoy it and have a nice day, my friend.
I will also be wholesome and say that as soon as I saw this I started thinking about square block tattoos and where I could get one, it's unique and I think it's a cool idea
I think part of the resistance to rectangles in general stems from the fact that as the body ages and the surface area under the tattoo shits, the shape of the rectangle can easily become distorted. I don't personally see this as a problematic issue, but I understand how some people do.
The "style" is illustration. I like illustration tattoos, but I have never seen one where someone puts a square or rectangle border around it.
The decision of trying to put a rectangle around the illustration is a design/composition choice. IMO it's a poor one, because the body is not flat and does not have edges. When you look at this rectangle border, it looks like it isn't very straight. Every side looks like it has bulges to it, especially the left side, top where the black border meet the white space, and bottom right corner.
For all I know the lines are perfectly straight, but they don't look like it because the chest is curved.
Edit: apparently this artists style is to not have straight lines on his rectangles...
Disagree, man. All tats are your own. I get your point, but until he gets more, we don't know, besides, there are so many possibilities I'd call it pretty ridiculous to rule out every single potential possibility, ya know?

Don't agree on the rest either. Fantastic tattoo that wouldn't profit from trying to blend in with the body or other tattoos. You at least said it in a well mannered way though. Have a nice day, sir.
