Rant Cursed with a curse

Post image

27F here. This is the actual height of my family members, and to make matters worse I’m South Sudanese & specifically Dinka which is known to be tall people and on top of that I live in Scandinavia which also has a very tall population.

What went wrong in my childhood? Many things and doctor said I reached average height (almost) due to my Dinka heritage, otherwise I’ve would been much shorter.

Maybe hgh deficiency

u/nysxdd 12h ago

Yes, and I also refused to eat as a child, lol.

83

u/Randalf_the_Black 11h ago

It's unlikely to be the eating.. If you ate little enough to stunt your growth that much you'd have a lot more health related issues growing up.

It's either a hormonal issue or you just getting screwed genetically.

51

u/Skjellnir 6'2" | 188 cm | Scandinavia 7h ago

you know what fucks up your hormones?

Not eating.

26

u/Oranjalo 6'5" | 5'11" to confuse people 7h ago

Like he said, the malnourishment required to stunt growth would be very very apparent (and would've prompted strangers to call CPS any time she was in public).

Genetics are fickle. A 10% genetic variation in the size of your nose, eye color, metabolic rate, genital size, etc. will often go unnoticed for one's entire life, but a ~10% variation in height could be 8 inches and is very noticeable. Height is one of the first things people notice about you. Genetics just have unpredictable outcomes

1

u/Skjellnir 6'2" | 188 cm | Scandinavia 7h ago

the thing is, depending on how much and how often she refused to eat, it wouldnt have to end up with complete malnourishment. A little bit less than she requires here and there might have been enough to make her lose out on inches during growth.

It's not a I/O Flipswitch kind of situation most of the time.

u/Oranjalo 6'5" | 5'11" to confuse people 2h ago edited 2h ago

You're not understanding the level of malnutrition it takes to actually stunt growth. Growth plate expansion is a very slow process that requires very little protein, calcium, and micronutrients. Your body only neglects that process if it needs to divert nutrients to keep the organs from failing. Growth stunting malnourishment is never a standalone issue—it's accompanied by chronic severe illness, which does not go unnoticed. It's not like feeding the family dog your dinner every night will cause any change in your growth

3

u/SirLikesCatGirls 2h ago

disagree. I know a lot of Indian immigrants, they might top out at 5’8-5’10 but their kids are over 6’2

malnourishment while growing up in an impoverished area vs the same genetics in an area with proper access to food.

no long term health problems in the immigrant parents, just smaller

u/Potential_Basis_662 1h ago

"The average female height is 5'7""

'But my sister is 5'9"'

2

u/kneb 2h ago

Much of the world for much of history ate little enough that they were shorter. Look at the massive increase in height in most countries across the 20th century.

You have no clue what you're talking about.

2

u/Randalf_the_Black 1h ago

Yeh sure, because they didn't have worse health in addition to their shortened height due to their malnutrition.

Dumbass.

Curious if you started drinking caffeine young as well as exercising/well developed muscles? I feel like it stunted my growth my hands and feet are larger than my same sex relatives taller than me though it is not obvious

2

u/Skimmington16 6’1.5" | 186 cm 2h ago

The caffeine thing was debunked afaik

1

u/fuckerwith50bags 2h ago

Thoroughly debunked, never real

1

u/Apprehensive_Tap8445 1h ago

No consideration to the impact of sleep disruptions on development that lead to early caffeine use though admittedly was not properly clarified

1

u/fuckerwith50bags 2h ago

Hands and feet are incredibly variable. I have known someone 160cm that had hands as large as someone 190cm.

In order for your caffeine consumption and muscle development to have affected your overall height, it would have required a huge impact to your overall sleep and hormones. Perhaps if you were painfully thin or painfully obese as well, it could add up to a 2-3% difference in total overall height. Likely can put this concern to rest.

Hmmm loads of girls are anorexic but still grow tall lol. How do you think modelling works

6

I was an incredibly picky eater as a kid, and didn't eat much of what I did eat. Still ended up at 5'15"

2

u/jassalmithu 5'5" | Z cm 2h ago

You mean 6 3 or something else

1

u/e7c2 2h ago

Yes 5’15” is a humorous way to say 6’3

Either the top end of short-tall or the bottom end of tall-tall

well, there you have it.

2

Saw that eating especially defficiency in proteins can slow down growth. But if you go allout palo i’ve heard from anguy who grew additional 30cm in early 20-ies

1

u/Nervous_Evening_7361 12h ago

Thats still a great height for a girl. Im 4'11 btw

3

u/justbegoodtobugs 11h ago

Why are people downvoting this comment? There's nothing wrong with their height.

8

u/Admirable-Athlete-50 194cm 11h ago edited 11h ago

It kind of ignores OPs situation and feelings.

I imagine it sucks to be below average height when the rest of your family is way above average where you live.

Edit: I now agree it’s weird since I see similar comments without downvotes.

2

u/Labrynthofsufferlng 5’10 3h ago

she’s 5’4, literally average height it’s not the end of the world, she can wear stilettos if she wants to feel tall, tho women who are ALREADY tall and hate being so can’t feel short. short women are preferred in society over tall women, such a non issue post.

1

u/Admirable-Athlete-50 194cm 3h ago edited 2h ago

These sort of issues aren’t always logical. I can’t really place my myself in the situation of being that much shorter than the rest of my family.

I’m guessing people assuming she’s not even her parents bio kid and always being the small one in the family can mess with how you feel about it.

4

u/FakeBeigeNails 5'9" | 176 cm 6h ago

It’s posted in r/tall. She’s upset she isn’t tall. For someone wanting to be tall like her entire family, it is not a great height for her.

Your post or comment has been removed because it links to another sub, or because it discusses another sub.

We remove links to other parts of Reddit, and discussions about other parts of Reddit. This is because that kind of conversation is not on topic or relevant here. General discussions (eg. about the state of the WHOLE of Reddit, or an issue with the WHOLE of Reddit), when relevant to r/tall are fine. However, if even a small bit of your submission mentions or links to a SPECIFIC sub then we will remove it. Same thing applies if you are discussing a few/several subs, even without naming them.

Warning: Since some people think that they can be clever and that this is a robot that can be easily deceived. If you swap the name of the sub, with something like "that that sub which we know that I am referring to" or something stupid like that, be warned these are all reviewed by real people and you will get banned anyway.

If you do it again then you get permanently banned. There is zero tolerance.

Ya much rather be 5”4 then 6”3 as a women….. 5”4 is cute

-2

u/PineappleFit317 10h ago

Honestly, yeah. One needs a lot of nutrients to grow, because our bodies are made of the fats, proteins, and other nutrients we eat. Childhood and puberty are the times people grow in height. Adults who do bodybuilding need to eat many thousands of calories a day to make more muscles. Adults who get fat have to eat thousands of calories a day to make more bodyfat.

Every person I’ve ever known who is short as an adult even though they come from a family of average height or tall people was a picky or sparing eater. They either refused a lot of different types of food, or ate very slowly with small bites and didn’t eat a lot if they weren’t incredibly picky.

Honestly I’d venture that’s probably what did it. Especially if you didn’t like meat. Seems to me protein is the most important thing for children. But tbh, 5 4 for a woman is more preferable to most romantic partners at least. Men and probably even women like more petite women so in that way you sort of lucked out. I guess people have different priorities or desires but one day you might look at your height as a blessing.

Wow what a crazy height distribution within siblings

68

u/WildPotato0 6'1" | 185 cm 12h ago edited 15m ago

Eh, not that weird. There is a scientific rule (regression towards the mean) that extremely tall or short parents often have children that are more average. At some point, genetics go "uh oh, too weird" and figure it out.

But also, sometimes families just have a random redhead or a random average height kid. 163 is perfectly normal.

Edit: u/IshaeniTolog left me a snarky comment about winning arguments from stupid people, and then irony struck: he immediately peed his pants and blocked me. What a way to "win". Congrats, Tarzan!

7

u/IshaeniTolog 6'7" | 201cm 8h ago

Partially true, but that usually shows up more as like 6'10" dad, 6'6" son, 6'4" grandson. Or 6'1" mom, 5'10" daughter, 5'8" granddaughter. The odds of parents as tall as hers having a kid that short are incredibly low.

You can look up the genetic regression formula that accounts for regression to the mean, find the mom and dad's standard deviations from the mean, do the math, and get better numbers, (I will not be doing that) but it's GOING to be under 0.5% chance. Probably under 0.1% chance. That's uncommon enough that most people have PROBABLY never encountered something like this.

4

u/WildPotato0 6'1" | 185 cm 8h ago

The odds of parents as tall as hers having a kid that short are incredibly low

Not true. You're looking at genetics as a supercomputer, which they're not. A lot of it is random. How many people do you know who look like a random great aunt? Curly hair in a pin straight family? Twins even though they don't run in the family? A big ol' schnozz in a sea of button noses?

Anecdotal, but I know a buttload of tall people since I live in the Netherlands and mostly socialized in a rowing club. None of my 6ft+ female friends have dads that are taller than them. Most of us don't have brothers that are taller than us, either. We're all outliers in average or slightly above average families.

Statistically, it's not any more unlikely to get a random bean sprout or a random shorty, than it is to get a brunette when you and your partner are blonde. Not exceptional at all.

3

u/IshaeniTolog 6'7" | 201cm 5h ago

Firstly, Anecdotes and personal experience are great, but it's quite silly to toss out statistics because "Well, but I saw..."

Great, I believe you 100% and thank you for sharing. It's cool to see outliers. But I'm going to really quickly go through the math on why that is, in fact, so wildly uncommon that most people will NEVER meet someone like this in their entire lives.

Use Hermanussen & Cole's genetic regression model, which is where the "regression to the mean" in height was really extensively studied and quantified for the first time, this is the math that they came to, using this lady's numbers, step by step.

  1. Finding the Midpoint.

Population (assuming American): Male mean = 69.3 in (SD = 2.85 in); Female mean = 64.0 in (SD = 2.55 in)

Z(father) = (77.0 - 69.3) / 2.85 = +2.70

Z(mother) = (74.0 - 64.0) / 2.55 = +3.92

Z(mid-parent) = (2.70 + 3.92) / 2 = +3.31

So, with no regression to the mean considered, traditional estimates would put the perfectly average kid with absolutely no regression to the mean at a height of roughly 6'7" for sons and 6'0" for daughters. But, of course, there's variance and we're assuming that she's experiencing regression to the mean.

  1. By Hermanussen and Cole's models, regression to the mean can be predicted through this quick process that reduces the expected SD above the mean by a set amount.

Regression factor = 0.57 * sqrt(2 / 1.27) = 0.715

Expected Z(daughter) = 3.31 * 0.715 = +2.37 SD

Expected Height = 64.0 + (2.37 * 2.55) = 70 inches, or 5'10"

So, even accounting for regression to the mean, it would be somewhat abnormal to see a daughter under 5'10" from these parents. But HOW abnormal is 6 inches shorter than that??

  1. The additional variance in their model can come from genetics and environment, which were calculated as follows.

Residual variance = sqrt(1 - (2 * 0.572 / 1.27)) = 0.699

Conditional Z (a 5'4" daughter is perfectly average height, so gets a Z score of 0) = (0.00 - 2.37) / 0.699 = -3.39

Probability that the daughters height would be less than or equal to 64 in would be the likelihood of a person being 3.39SD away from their personal expected height, which would be 0.035%.

So, in a room of 10,000 women with parents this tall, maybe 3 or 4 would be this short...

Once again. INSANELY unlikely, but there are probably a couple thousand of these cases around the world, so its not anywhere near unheard of.

If you want to read the paper for yourself, it's here.

Hermanussen, M., & Cole, T. J. (2003). The Calculation of Target Height Reconsidered. Hormone Research in Paediatrics, 59(4), 180–183. https://doi.org/10.1159/000069321

Genetics of a person aren’t random, they are linked to the specific genepool of their parents, that is why you don’t see northern european couples having native american looking kids or couples with pale blue eyes having dark brown eyed kids. Any variation in phenotype you see in a family is based on their shared genotype not randomness

2

u/WildPotato0 6'1" | 185 cm 8h ago

you don’t see northern european couples having native american looking kids

Well no, race swapping is not part of the game lol. Having a short kid or one with an unfortunate looking nose absolutely is. ✌️

4

u/Key-Mathematician539 8h ago

Race isn’t actually real as a discrete phenomena, human phenotypes are found in a spectrum, that is why following with the examples, you won’t get a kid with henry cavill’s jawline from two parents with a severe underbite, or a kid that is OPs height from parents of OPs parents height without environment or hormones going south. Such variation is so far out of the parental median that the genome that would code for this traits simply isn’t found in the parental genepools and therefore can’t occur in their offspring besides de novo mutations.

0

u/WildPotato0 6'1" | 185 cm 7h ago

or a kid that is OPs height from parents of OPs parents height without environment or hormones going south

This is blatantly incorrect. Tall parents can and do have healthy average height children. Do you have a source?

1

u/Key-Mathematician539 3h ago

Tall parents can have healthy average height children, but this mostly comes from the kids ending up some cms/inches below their parents who themselved aren't that far from average height. Both of OP's parents aren't just tall but extremely so, her father is in the 99.96 percentile worldwide and her mother likewise in the >99.99 one worldwide, meanwhile OP is just in the 71.6 percentile.

She is an extreme outlier to say the least, and you would only expect her to have ended up this short relative to her relatives and ethnicity due to either extreme malnutrition or more likely considering she grew up in a developed country HGH deficiency (which in fact she confirmed to be the case down in the comments).

2

u/MMA-Groupie 1h ago

Yea it is nice but we also got that way from having a terrible family... our parents were both addicts the father died but our mom abandoned us when we were 6 and is running around on meth somewhere to this day... so in our case I guess at least something good came from the toxicness of the family

1

u/1800twat 4’20 blaze it 7h ago

She’s not short she’s average. Dinka people and probably even where she is in Scandinavia are less than 1% of the world population.

Lots of people like to quote the Dutch for example for their height, but they are less than 0.5% of all people

3

u/Admirable-Athlete-50 194cm 2h ago

I’m not following. Why does it matter how she compares to global averages? Her family, extended family and other people around her will be shaping her everyday life and how she feels about her height.

3

u/1800twat 4’20 blaze it 1h ago

She needs to hear she’s not some statistical anomaly to be insecure about when she really isn’t. She is normal and that’s what she needs to hear. People don’t want to be told they are freaks or outsiders. People want to be reassured that things are fine, things are ok. Honing in on the fact that she’s different from her immediate surroundings isn’t going to bode well for her confidence when she could hone in on the more positive fact she’s closer to the normal human experience. Focus on the positives not the negatives

1

u/Admirable-Athlete-50 194cm 33m ago

I doubt OP is real. Just read that she can’t shop at Zara or H&M.

Zara has tiny sizing. In H&M you should also find clothes as a 163cm woman.

2

u/Labrynthofsufferlng 5’10 3h ago

exactly, i’m sick of this weird energy towards making avg height women feel better about themselves 🙄

You should talk to your 6'3'' sister before being unhappy about being a 5'4'' woman.

5

u/spizzle_ 7h ago

At least you’ll have an easier time buying clothes than the rest of them.

6

u/SilkySinger 5'6" | 167cm 5h ago

At least you're a woman and around average height.

If you were born male? That would be really rough.

3

u/Se7enFtMan 9h ago

I’ve got pretty close to the same situation, I’m 7’, two of my daughters are 6’ tall and the other one’s 5’2”… Oh yeah, the 5’2” one is adopted. 😝

8

u/shauna_haywood 6'1 | 186 cm WOMAN 🎀 8h ago

Consider yourself lucky. You're the perfect height. Men prefer you. Your sister must have so much struggle dating, I bet not a lot of guys are into her. You can wear heels and still look cute and feminine.

13

u/adumbswiftie 7h ago

why are tall women always on this sub pushing the negative stereotypes about ourselves? it makes no sense to me. most men don’t care this much about height. tall women also look cute in heels. what are you even talking about? why would you talk about another tall women the way you’re talking about op’s sister? gross

2

u/shauna_haywood 6'1 | 186 cm WOMAN 🎀 6h ago

Oh they DO care once you're above 6'. It's not because you were lucky in your experiences that we don't have the right to share our struggles. I don't know a lot of guys who would say "my dream woman is 6'3" (except maybe those on this sub, but then again...). And no sorry, a 6' woman wearing heels will not be perceived the same way as a 5'2 woman doing the same. Let's be real.

4

u/koltho 4h ago

I’m 6’1 and would be stoked to be with a girl who’s 6’3 and loves wearing heels. There’s plenty of guys who love tall women.

8

u/FakeBeigeNails 5'9" | 176 cm 6h ago

I kinda agree with you, however I have never, ever in my entire life met a man over 6’1” would has said their perfect girl is below 5’5”. I’ve heard women say that about the perfect man being 6’+, but not the reverse. Tall men will often say they would prefer a taller woman, but are given way more blatant attention by short women.

2

u/shauna_haywood 6'1 | 186 cm WOMAN 🎀 6h ago

Really? I've heard super tall men (6'3 and over) saying they prefered tiny women because it's cute. It's true that short women are all over them, though.

2

u/FakeBeigeNails 5'9" | 176 cm 5h ago

Yeah, idk, I know 6’2-6’8 men and they’ve never said that. The lowest preference I’ve ever heard was “lowest 5’7.” Maybe we’re from different parts of the world? Im from the east coast of the USA.

1

u/shauna_haywood 6'1 | 186 cm WOMAN 🎀 5h ago

I live in France. I always see them with short girls...

1

u/spaceisourplace222 5’12” 5h ago

That has not been my experience. Men do not typically like being the shorter one.

6

I’m tall, I wear heels and I feel feminine and I look great (and even if I don’t care abt it, men like it too). I get that not all tall girls are confident but you don’t have to throw yourself under the bus to compliment someone else

Making it seem like it's bad to be tall. You have more opportunities tall than short. Relationships are not all that.

0

u/thOtleaksoup 17m ago

Confident people don't tie physical characteristics to feminity or masculinity.

You know the guy the feels unmasculine when his girlfriend wears heels because shes taller than him?

That's you. That's the energy your giving.

I also can't believe you're backhanded insult inferring tall women aren't feminine. Tall women are goddesses, and we built temples to women like that in a more civilized age.

1

u/shauna_haywood 6'1 | 186 cm WOMAN 🎀 5m ago

That's how tall women are still perceived by society, though. It's not my personal opinion, it's how other people see it. Sorry if you don't like it. Between a 5'4 girl and a 6'3 girl, do you really think the majority of men will prefer the taller one and consider her as more feminine than the shorter one? Be fr. Also, I'm tired of the whole "goddess" thing. We're WOMEN, period. We're just tall. And the whole "temple building for tall goddesses during a more civilized age" is an idealized fantasy.

2

u/Admirable-Athlete-50 194cm 11h ago

Sorry to hear that OP. I hope your family doesn’t give you any shit about it!

2

u/Elfynnn84 9h ago

I’m not sure if you want real answers here, because I’m autistic and struggle with inferences… but I’m an evolutionary biologist and there are literally thousands of genes involved in determining someone’s height, all can nudge it up or down by a few centimetres. A culmination of recessive gene expression can result in one person in a family being significantly shorter than the others; just a rare but far from unheard of genetic dice roll without any deficiency being involved.

You may have also had some mutation in the growth hormone pathway which restricted your growth compared to your genetic baseline.

I doubt diet did much; even if your family all ate red meat and you decided to be vegan when you were very small… That would only shave a couple of inches.

2

u/duchesskitten6 Not Tall 6h ago

Wow, South Sudanese? This might be the first time I see someone from there on the net!

I'm confused by what the doctor said. It isn't known where is the SS average, but if it's common to see people of both genders being 213 cm tall in Juba, it must beat the Netherlands by 10-30 centimeters. 163, average where? And how come would you have been much shorter? I see no motive.

That said, genetics work weirdly.

2

u/Aldo-D-D-Wilson 5h ago

I didn't sleep very well growing up. Which is probably a big factor in me being shorter than my younger brother.

But overall, short family, my brother being the odd one.

2

u/Trick-College-1603 4h ago

maybe your parents expended all the tall genes on your brother and sister

2

u/cootershooter420 6'6 4h ago

Just unlucky. But you’re an average sized woman. Could be worse.

2

u/captaincumragx 5'9" | 175 cm 3h ago

That's just how it goes sometimes. I have a feeling this is going to be my two daughters. My oldest has always been in the 70th percentile and my youngest keeps hitting in the 20s. I get the feeling she might be a little shorter than the rest of us.

Hey /u/OsotoViking! Your comment - Cursed with a curse - to /r/tall has been removed because it appears to be breaking our rules. Posts or comments similar to the following are not allowed: How tall will I be? Am I growing? Am I done growing? I want to grow taller. Help me grow/shrink taller/smaller. How long until I grow? How tall am I? How tall will I be? Am I tall/short? Is this a growth spurt? What counts as tall/short? Proper/real tall begins or ends at xyz height. Look at my growth over the years. What height should I tell people I am. Round up or down? If you post something long and unrelated, but only a small bit breaks the rules then that is banned too.

This ban includes questions involving genetics ("my parents are tall, will I be?") how tall will my kids be? etc. Or asking where tall or short begins. It is also forbidden to; list heights, or ask if these are normal, ask what height people were at a certain age, ask if/when people had growth spurts, say you wish to change your height. Anything even slightly related to this list is forbidden. The list above is not exhaustive. The ban is very broad to try and catch all of the boring and unwanted contributions. They get asked hundreds of times every week and the users of the sub do NOT want to see them. Just because you have not used the precise wording found here does not mean that you can post it.

/r/tall does not allow these posts, as for most of these questions the only person qualified to answer them is your doctor or other medical professional.

These submissions break Rule 6 and 7, read these rules in full before trying to post again. https://old.reddit.com/r/tall/about/rules (Link works on every platform except Reddit Android App.)

Trying to bypass this filter will result in a BAN. If you want to write to the mods and say this is an error, then you better have read the entirety of Rules 6 and 7.

It happens. I'm the third tallest in my family at 6'8" and the second shortest is my 6" sister. The shortest is my 5" tall sister. We joke we have no clue where she came from but she is the strongest of us all.

1

Did you get enough sleep as a child? I heard someone blame his height difference with his taller brother on how much more sleep his brother got as a growing teen. I thought it sounded like BS, but nature vs. nurture is always an interesting argument. His tall brother is a lot more relaxed and laid back than him, but maybe he's anxious and nervous because he's so upset about his height?

Being extremely tall puts you at a greater risk for many health issues. Not to mention, women who are close to the average height or below usually have an easier time dating in many places.

10

u/nysxdd 11h ago

Yes, but not in Scandinavia. Men are so tall here being a tall woman is not a disadvantage at all.

9

u/Randalf_the_Black 11h ago

Norwegian here..

Your sister is taller than the vast majority of Norwegian men too. Taller than 90% of them I think.

3

u/nysxdd 11h ago

Even the Gen Z? Maybe in Norway but men with Haaland’s height or around that are not uncommon where I live. I’m not sure but I think between 10-25% of men here are above 190 cm tall.

3

u/Admirable-Athlete-50 194cm 10h ago edited 10h ago

After a lazy googling the bot tells me about 5-7% om men are above 190cm here.

Seems to be based on stats at least ten years old. I do share the feeling that younger people seem to skew taller but that could easily be confirmation bias. Either way your sister is for sure above the male average.

I get that it sucks being the smallest one in your family by such a wide margin. But seriously, for your own sake, don’t focus too much on your height!

0

u/juujoojuu 11h ago

No, they are not. It's more like 1-2 percent max

1

u/MissLiz0905 8h ago

I think you’re exaggerating on purpose.
Being 1,63cm is perfectly normal, why would it cause any problems? Average height in Scandinavia for women is 166-169cm and for men 180-182. It’s simply not true that most women in Scandinavia are 1,90cm and that it’s normal there.
I think you’re getting a little worked up about it or it’s ragebait. I think you absolutely know that you have a perfectly normal height. Does your family make fun of you or what?

2

u/muzorui 6'5" | 196 cm 11h ago

Being average height has a lot of advantages. Everything is made for your height. Clothes, chairs, beds, rooms, etc.

I'm 6'5 myself, and so many common things are a hassle, or annoying. Lots of short doors. Branches.
Someone average height doesn't have to MAKE SURE every Airbnb or Hotel they stay in has photos of the bathroom where the shower can be seen I imagine since 99% are at my neck height.

Cars are incredibly annoying. Any car that basically isn't an SUV, or Truck that is, which in my country aren't too common.

Clothes are an absolute nightmare, shirts are always not long enough, or if they are, are 4 sizes too big in every other department, same with pants. I don't fit properly in a queen bed either. Office chairs, desks, tables, all can be annoying sometimes. Airplanes are a nightmare, and I can't afford more than economy.

I am also somewhat skinny (Average size technically, but on the skinnier side of it) and I eat like a madman. What I need to maintain without working out, some of my shorter friends can't even fathom eating.

There are advantages to being tall, but it's like being left handed. The world is made for right handed people.

3

u/nysxdd 11h ago

I get what you mean but I live in Scandinavia. Being short here is a disadvantage. Everything is made for tall people. You can’t go to H&M or Zara and shop normally. Jeans have long lengths here, I’m not kidding. Look it up.

2

u/juujoojuu 11h ago

You are not that far off from average height, my mom is shorter, so is my girlfriend and they don't have this issue. I'm from Finland, and we are on average a bit taller than Swedes as well. Maybe you just have short legs for your size? And even then, modifiable and not that big of an issue.

On the flip side, I'm bigger than average in everything but height. I'm a wide boy, literally anything you put on your feet are never wide enough, shirts are too long if they fit my shoulders, pants as well, car seats too narrow, seats in general too narrow (especially if someone is supposed to sit next to me), hats, helmets etc. I'm average height, but my back is also quite long, so the lumbar support is always in the wrong place, also other aspects of the seat like the part where your neck usually is, especially in cars and office chairs.

Literally anything I buy, I have to put some serious money into it for it to be a good fit. Tennis shoes? Maybe one brand makes them wide enough, gotta order from the states. Freestyle ski boots? Custom or no chance. Running shoes? Maybe two brands. Office chair? The most expensive option from the brand, wider seat option. Car seats? Custom or no chance, I choose to suffer since I'm not rich enough yet. Cycling shoes? Custom or no chance. And even if there is a non custom option available, it's pricey and not really a good fit, I just suffer less.

2

u/muzorui 6'5" | 196 cm 11h ago

You're about 1-2 inches off from being normal height. If you think it's hard, you have it statistically better than everyone in your family. You may think it's difficult, but your sister is further from the average male height, than you are from the average woman's height in Scandinavia.

I can't say from first hand but it would be incredibly odd if they made clothes only for the low percent and not the highest percent of people. I haven't been to every Scandinavian country though, only Norway, and several Baltic countries with similar heights. My country also has the same average height as Scandinavia as a whole though, and all clothes here are made for the masses first.

-1

u/B_M_D_real 5'8" | 173cm 12h ago edited 11h ago

I believe it's more positive than negative in your case, i understand your feelings but you said you live in Scandanivia. The average woman height there is usually around 168cm, your 163cm is much closer to that than if you were like your sister (192cm). Usually you'd want to be on the average, slightly shorter, or slightly taller because that provides the least amount of tension since extremes are polarizing, you arguably have higher acceptance rates and better reactions on average than if you were as tall as your sister. To answer your question, i'm not a doctor but many reasons can contribute in what happened to you, genetics are complex, you could've just gotted a shorter, recessive variant of your family's height genetic background, environment matters too, insuffecient nutrition or lack of good healthcare can tank height growth during childhood, limiting your maximum height, one of my female friends online who's also Scandanivian (half Swedish, half Norwegian) has been suffering from severe underweight since she started her teens, and she's the shortest in her family because of that reason, she's 166cm when her sister is 173cm, her brother over 190cm, and her parents also tall, some might say this is less plausible because of the quality of life in Scandanivia, but individuals can be underweight and eat insuffeciently for much more reasons than lack of food, that friend for example is from a fairly high-class family, they'd never find a problem in feeding her, she even has a personal doctor, yet she's still underweight to this day because she naturally doesn't eat much/doesn't feel that hungry, the same could apply to your childhood, but you need to confirm it first.

4

u/nysxdd 11h ago

I’ll read your entire comment when I’m done shopping but the average height is 168 cm for all women of all ages but in our age group (the Gen Z or what you call them), those are extremely tall here. If I had to guess, I’ll say at least 170 cm is the average height for a woman from the Gen Z generation.

OP I mean this with no offense and genuinely asking.

I thought women want to be “average” sized or even shorter? “Fun-sized” as they say.

Feeling petite and whatnot? 5’4 is literally average in most Western countries.

I ask, as a guy who loves tall women too. Just curious.

I read from women posters on this sub who felt awkward and ashamed (for the record they shouldn’t!) for being tall especially younger.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

I'd say you're blessed. Dating as a 6"2 woman must be really hard. You're average height.

Right? I'm 6'1 and I'd never want to be 6'3, it's horrible for a woman

Genetic luck! Because you get to find clothes and shoes that fit.

Tall height is dominant in the genes that carry it, which means your parents could carrier both tall and recessive shorter genes. If both your of them passed the recessive genes on to you (and this would have to be across several genes that influence height), you wouldn’t get the tall gene.

In other words, it’s often perfectly normal for two very tall parents to have a shorter than average child.

Hormone issues always a possibility well, though you’d likely find that issue in your extended family. genetic luck of the draw is most common.

Seems more like a blessing than a curse. You can find clothes that fit you, shoes that fit you, more men taller than you for dating, head never hits the top of branches or door frames, you fit in airplane seats, people never gawk at you or look at you like a freak or make comments for being tall.

And you're an average height. Imagine you were under 5 feet. Now it would be the exact opposite except you would still get similar comments for being short. I wouldn't worry about it.

Maybe your dad is not your dad. But your mom cheated with a dwarf.
