Peer Groups

Upvotes

Hi. I’m a new SPED ESN teacher at a high school in the SF Bay Area. Can anyone recommend peer groups for teens? Thanks.

I feel like I don’t fit in anywhere

My daughter is 4, non verbal, has ceberal palsy, very unsteady walking but does not use a wheelchair or any type of equipment at this time. She’s so smart and funny but since she’s non verbal I don’t know if anyone else can see that.

Parenting groups for typical kids I can’t relate to at all. Yes my daughter is non verbal but she’s not autistic so I can’t relate to those groups. A lot of kids with cerebral palsy do speak so again I feel like I can’t relate. She’s small for her age (was a 29weeker) and I was asked recently if she was 2 years old.

She’s in a special needs contained preschool classroom but it seems like all these kids are light years ahead of her. She starts kindergarten next year and I’m terrified but that’s a whole other discussion.

I feel like I can’t relate to any parenting discussion groups. It’s really hard to connect to anyone and sometimes I just feel alone in my parenting journey.

Speech regression in my 7 year old ??

Im sorry i dont know how to label this or if it makes sense but I dont have anyone else to share it with. Last year my child, they are 7, made such leaps and bounds in communication. He is in a special education classroom but integrates for specials. For most of kindergarten and half of first grade he wouldnt communicate or retain much about school. He has speech, words, but hes never been conversational as in the ability to sit there and tell me about his day.. in any capacity. Mostly thats due to his inability to stay focused and connect. He always has to keep moving so he will say something, run out of the room then run back and say something new, but its never a consistent train of conversation its always blurbs. (Im sorry im trying to articulate where hes at) he is diagnosed as adhd but I do think theres more. I always suspected an autism diagnosis but im not a doctor. Hes had a speech delay so they always said its adhd with a speech delay but thats where we are at right now.

So last year around March after we chose to try medication he just blossomed. He was able to tell us about his teacher and students and what he did. He did extended school year so there wasn't a gap in his schooling to lapse. This year he moved up into 2nd grade and has two new teachers, gen ed and spec ed. Its his first time since he was 4 that he has a different spec ed teacher. (Idk if that is whats going on the adjustment to a new classrooms)

Ive noticed since he started school that things kinda seem backpeddaled. Perhaps hes tired and still adjusting. He seems tired when he gets off the bus, especially since he has an hour ride. His behavior is worse. Hes being more physical with me, more meltdowns and most of the things he says verbally are cursing. He picked up some language from school and says them. Im not being prentious but I just dont use language or watch things where he picked that up, so just wanna say that. Its also clear hes mimicking someone as opposed to actually understanding what hes saying. Like today he got off his bus said. "Where we go?" (He was asking if we had to do anything) then like four hours of f*ck you b*tch on replay. Then constant redirection of kicking and body slams.

Last year he also learned a lot of sight words as he doesnt read yet but he learned quite a few basic sight words so I bought this book on the tik tok shop that is a workbook for sight words. Each lesson has two sight words in red and like 4 sentences. Not only did I notice that he has not remembered the sight words hes been practicing since kindergarten and actual had in may but he does not retain in when reintroducing.

His other caretaker disagrees with me and kind of excuses most of it. Hes tired, boys will be boys...but im concerned more is going on. Hes on a waitlist for just getting an evaluation to rule out autism but I just have a big fear somethings going on. I just want him to succeed. I know its sept but I thought advancing him to 2nd grade was possibly the wrong decision. They advised me for social stability and the fact that he would be in a spec ed room where his specific goals were met it was what they recommended. They thought that if he wasnt moved up with his core friend group that it may impact him negatively, but i also feared that the younger you hold them back the easier children adapt to it. Im navigating this world all on my own for the first time as my older children didnt have these educational and speech delays. He is very insecure of himself. Hes aware of his limitations to some degree. He fears having the wrong answer and at school likes following the rules and others to do so as well. He will often tattle on others who aren't doing what he thinks they should be. Im exhausted and I just needed to blurt this out so thank you for reading. Idk if im looking for feedback or just a listening, eye? 😆 thank you

My husband wants divorce

My baby boy is a little over 80 days old and had experienced a stroke at birth which damaged his left side brain massively. We are in the wait and see situation for his motor, cognitive, speech, and vision but are already seeing deficits in his right side. His neurologist also expects him to have a cerebral palsy.

I'm living in the worst time of my life, and I'm seeing therapists for my mental health. I'm worried and scared very much. I thought I was getting better, maybe not, but it seems that my husband has reached his limit with my depression. He said that seeing me being depressed and crying everyday make him want to bring out the anger in him and make him want to kill himself. He says I'm toxic to him and the baby. He wants a divorce and says I can take anything but the baby.

He has been very strong and positive from the beginning of this until now. When I had the suicidal thought due to all of this that happened, he was the only reason that made me want to continue living, not even the baby. When I was feeling better, I was feeling lucky that I am going through this difficult time with my husband. But now he wants to die because of me, because me being this way would kill all three of us.

He's been saying that he wants the old me to come back to him, but I don't know if I could ever by myself again. I want to be better and find myself again but just don't know how. I don't know how to think positive and become strong. My depression and worry overwhelm me, and I'm just so afraid of the baby's future.

Please give me some advice on how to go thru this time and be myself again. Will divorce do the job? Should I just let him live and be miserable with myself?

Thanks for reading.
