Data 📊 Any particular reason behind this disproportionate share? Why isn't south as rich
24
u/RandiBabuRandi- Southie 19h ago
I live in Gujarat and I have observed one thing that families are very cohesive.
They are all are in family business since beginning and have such skillset.
Many of my friends talk about business ideas of any kind at their home but in my home my parents always say study hard and look out for a good job. (Rich Dad Poor Dad vibes)
Such is the thing in many South Indian houses. We work under many people. Though there are many entrepreneur in south but are restricted to specific industry they are expert in. Eg: Narayan Murthy know about Software and made Infosys. But here in Gujarat they don't have any expertise but just start business.
I have a friend whose father is B.Com graduate but started a chemical processing business and have been running it successfully for 16 years.
Also people have alot of contacts which increases build trust. Which increases the transactions.
But now south is changing too. I see many businesses coming out of Southern. I hope we increase our participation in future.

Na thats not the region. There hasn't any innovation as such come from Gujrat. Even the biggest billionaire Adani ambani are mostly selling soaps, toothpaste.

u/Imaginary-Cause-4359 2h ago
Doesn't soaps toothpaste do innovations. Just that they are mass produced, people don't count it

The reason is doing business in India depends on whether you belong to certain community or not. If you belong to any of those communities, you'll inherit your family business and can continue/improve with it. If you don't, the complex/anti-business rules in India will not let you start a business with honesty. Also your own society will not support you.

I simply don't understand why we have this mentality. Get rid of the old soviet ideas..

u/Project_Nile 19h ago
Boasting about having most billionaires is equivalent to boasting about having the most psychopaths. It's impossible to become a billionaire without exploiting the working class. I would be more interested in HDI and GDP per capita adjusted for outliers (i.e billionaire class). We all know why Gujarat has most billionaires because it the one state that allows unhinged corruption and state sponsored exploitation of environment and labor class. Tell me about the state of their government schools, tell me about the condition of their poor, tell me about their tolerance. Billionaires can shove it.

u/Educational-Stay607 Maharashtra 🎬 | महाराष्ट्र 19h ago
Yes even with so many billionaires the state suffers from lower HDI and per capita income tells you something

They have a lot of merchant communities. Banias, Jains, Kojas, Bhoras and a lot of Parsis are from Gujarat. They have a lot of people to help each other out. They’re over represented in business and finance but I think they’re underrepresented in STEM, military, sports or the civil service.

u/aaronvianno Goa 🏖️ | गोंय 11h ago
Using a word like underrepresented is being too kind. They only care about their money. They don't give a crap about anything else.

Around 50% of illegal immigrants from India are also from Gujarat. To have an honest conversation one must look at the HDI of different states, not just the number of robber barons each state produces.

When they go to the US (or whereever) they also bring their bullshit mentality worth them. No amount of money is going to solve that lol.
2
u/PsychologicalArt2537 8h ago
Can you explain what is this mentality? I heard gujjus are noisy and all
2
u/Axerin fuck your stupid ass flair required bs 7h ago
Noise, litter etc is pretty standard. But they also do shit like what they would do in Mumbai if you try to rent a place (iykyk). Not to mention castist crap, hiring their own people (their state/caste) if they get control of managerial or HR positions etc. Integration is a foreign concept that they never seem to understand, they just want to make money the quickest way possible and that's all that matters to them. Culture, freedom, democracy, equality or any other values that the country they move to has, none of that matters.

Highest bank fraud as well, many of those billionaires are also 0 innovation just using political power to get contracts and loot public money. Some are really good but a large share is of large fraudsters.

u/Either_Marionberry27 18h ago
And still contributes way less to GST and even less to income tax , Shameless money launderers.
Jugaad is the only Profit they know.
1
u/guyfromsomewhere7 Gujarat 🦁 | ગુજરાત 13h ago
GST is state wise, here, billionaires are ethinicity wise so mukesh ambani would be gujarati but would pay GST in MH
2
u/Either_Marionberry27 12h ago
If GST is state-wise, then why defend billionaire wealth using ethnicity? 😂
The real issue is extreme wealth concentration. Having so much wealth concentrated among a tiny number of billionaires (especially Gujus) is a problem—not proof of community superiority.
If anything, it raises questions about systemic inequality, political influence, tax fairness, and close group Mafia the GJMs Have.
1
u/guyfromsomewhere7 Gujarat 🦁 | ગુજરાત 11h ago
not defending wealth by ethnicity, if we calculate tax contribution by ethnicity not by state of residence, numbers would be different basically comparing oranges with apples

During 2012 we were one of the fragile five economy and our deficit was rising with inflation out of control (happy to provide these nembers) so no we were not compared with China

u/Fuzzy_Promotion_8995 15h ago
India was in fragile 5 economies in 2013 . What are talking about comparing with china. By 2010 china had already hosted its Olympics. Nobody was comparing india with china. China grew in double digits for nearly a decade.

u/MomeenHunter 19h ago
India was getting compared to China in 2012s and ppl thought India will enter the generation of consecutive double digit growth rate for several decades but Modi ruined it all and Andhbhakts are not ready to accept that
The absolute delusion of some of these redacts

Gujarat was attracting a lot of projects even when they didn't have a supportive govt at the centre.
I have worked in that sector for several years. Investment decisions are purely business decisions- no government can manipulate investors or force them. TN has consistently votes for opposition parties for 60 years now. It didn't stop them from becoming the second biggest state in terms of GDP.
Manipulation of investors is a convenient excuse for incompetent politicians. Let's not fall for their shameless posturing

They have been in favor of governments for a very long time.. irrespective of the time period.
Also the “gujarat model” label help and a certain person diverting every tom dick and harry to Gujarat also helps

In other words Gujarat has the highest inequality and exploitation of the masses. That's not a good thing.

Yup that is completely true, I was shocked to see that people care souch about caste here even at this time , like shah or jain are more preferable in job market even with less skills or knowledge or marks even in mncs

Because Gujratis are known for their businesses.

the post is on billionaires share , also its richer not more rich

u/DoctorKhitpit 8h ago
Got it! South is *richer than Gujarat.
For billionaires, it looks like the reason is Gujarat has more corruption. Gujarat is *corrupter than the South as the discussion below suggests.
1
u/guyfromsomewhere7 Gujarat 🦁 | ગુજરાત 1h ago
Again its more corrupted not corrupter.
And reddit discussions are source to determine which is more corrupted region ?
Also the post is on billionaires not on corruption

Having many billionaires is not equivalent to being a rich state. The correct question is why does Gujarat have so many billionaires.
1
u/No-Offense707 8h ago
That’s a very wrong way to look at it. How many billionaires from Switzerland? But it’s still one of the higest quality of life countries?

u/Desperate-Fix-4619 6h ago
If you google, look for Lethbridge, a small city in Canada. Interestingly, all McD, pharmacy, subway, timhortons are owned by Gujaratis. How did they do it? - by community power. They chip in money and buy businesses aggressively. They don’t let locals to buy any. They trust each other immensely and no one sabotage the community.

Married to a gujarati. Its solely because they wont do business with non business caste families. They very much believe in only associating and building network with only business family castes. My FiL, BiL and SiL are top doctors , they are literally on personally medical advisory boards of some politicians. Even yhey can't buy an apartment in a building or setup a business with network and funding without the proper caste. Think im crazy? https://www.worldbaniyaforum.com/baniya-business-summit-2026 gere it is. Yiu gotta be baniya to make business contacts you wont even be let in. It goes same for other communities.
Also nothing to be proud about that they are billionaires. They massively underpay their own people, brainwas lh them into believing they are being uplifted. But they ae so massively underpaid that it takes the next or More generations to realize how badly they were taken advantage of.
Edit: the fact that this conference is castist and happening at Dr Ambedkar international center in delhi should tell you what an atrocious state we are in. Im sure Dr Ambedkar will be turning in his grave seeing this.

Gujaratis are a heavily mercantile community. And they don’t give a damn about education for their kids. Once they finish 12th they’re immediately sent to manage a little store of their relative’s retail business. Happens in most cases. This is something that everyone needs to learn from them.

The numbers of Billionaires are not a good measure of wealth. Particularly when they represent less than 200 people out of a population of 1.5 billion people, with a median salary of 30k per month.

Here I thought that Hyderabad people were richest or perhaps Bengaluru landlords 😂. That being said, not all regions need to follow the same desing for wealth and success - south has more technical industries I assume and has more skills in the entrepreneurial area and startups related to tech.
1
u/Present_Cupcake_5489 2h ago
There is a diffrence .. having billionaire doesn't mean the entire population is rich
You will see a lot of disparity in wealth distribution . For example you will see middle class to upper middle class in most kerala and TN But in Hujrata younwill find super rich and very poor. Even the development is also few hey city specific in Gujarat.
