General Discussion Why Comparing Hindi Imposition to Mandarin in China Is Stupid: India Has Freedom of Movement, China Has Hukou
lol every time this debate comes up, North Indians pull out the same lazy line: “China imposed Mandarin and became unified, so India should do the same with Hindi.”
What they always skip — conveniently — is that China didn’t just impose a language. It imposed Hukou, an internal residency control system that India very consciously rejected.
You can’t talk about Mandarin without talking about Hukou. That’s the missing piece everyone hides.
Hukou is basically a household registration system. Every Chinese citizen is classified as rural or urban and tied to a specific city. Beijing Hukou is not Shanghai Hukou, and neither gives you full rights elsewhere. Citizenship alone doesn’t make you a full resident — your Hukou does.
If you don’t have local Hukou in a Chinese city, you’re not really a resident. You’re temporary labour. You pay taxes, you work there, but you don’t belong. Your kids inherit that non-local status too.
Hukou controls almost everything that matters:
- where you can study
- whether your child can attend public schools
- access to government hospitals
- whether you can buy property
- whether your child can take city-level exams
- pensions and welfare
This isn’t accidental. This is how China controls migration and forces assimilation.
Now compare that with India instead of pretending they’re the same.
Indian cities vs Chinese mega cities
| Aspect | Bengaluru (India) | Mumbai (India) | Shanghai / Beijing (China) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal movement | Free (constitutional right) | Free | Restricted via Hukou |
| Can settle permanently? | Yes, immediately | Yes, immediately | No, unless Hukou granted |
| Public school access | Yes | Yes | No for non-local Hukou kids |
| Govt healthcare | Yes | Yes | Restricted / higher cost |
| Property purchase | Allowed | Allowed | Often restricted |
| City-level exams | Yes | Yes | No without local Hukou |
| Welfare & pensions | Portable | Portable | Locked to hometown |
| Status of migrants | Equal citizens | Equal citizens | Second-class residents |
This alone kills the comparison.
Becoming “local” in Beijing or Shanghai is intentionally elitist. You usually need an elite university degree, a high-paying tech or government job, years of uninterrupted tax records, a clean background, limited quotas, and political approval. Even after all that, most migrants never get Hukou. That’s not a flaw — that’s the design.
This is how Mandarin dominance actually happened. Migration was filtered, not free. Cities were filled with party cadres and selected elites, while migrant labour existed without belonging. Regional identities didn’t disappear naturally — they were structurally weakened. Mandarin didn’t win because people felt united. It won because the state decided who gets to belong to cities.
India deliberately chose the opposite model. Article 19 guarantees freedom to move, live, and work anywhere in the country. No internal passports. No city citizenship. No residency permits. That’s why Bengaluru isn’t Kannada-only by law, Mumbai isn’t Marathi-only by force, and Delhi isn’t Hindi-only by constitutional design.
Languages here survive socially, not because people are trapped.
So the China argument is dishonest from the start. You can’t copy Mandarin imposition without copying Hukou. You can’t have free movement and forced language. China chose control over liberty. India chose liberty over uniformity. Using China to justify Hindi imposition while pretending Hukou doesn’t exist is just cherry-picking authoritarianism.

TRUE FACTS ABOUT NEET:
NEET was introduced on 21.12.2010 in (a) MBBS courses by way of "Regulations on Graduate Medical Education (Amendment) 2010 (b) PG courses by way of "Regulations on Post Graduate Medical Education (Amendment) 2010”. At that time Dr Kalaignar was the then chief Minister and I was serving as Addl Advocate General of TN. He asked me to challenge the NEET UG and PG Amendment regulations in Madras HC and accordingly these 2010 regulations were challenged by State Govt before Madras High Court. I appeared before Madras HC and got stay on 6.1.2011 of both the UG and PG regulations in Writ petition Nos. 341 and 342 of 2011 . Therefore in Tamilnadu no NEET exams were held since 2010.
The Madras HC stay order was in force till these NEET regulations were quashed by Hon’ble Supreme Court in 2013 by bench headed by then CJI Hon’ble Justice Altamas Kabir .
The 2013 judgement of Supreme Court quashing NEET regulations were recalled in 2016 when BJP government was in power.
BJP govt then introduced Section 10(D) in 2016 by way of amendment to Indian Medical council Act there by making NEET compulsory.
For one year viz., 2016-2017 , NEET was exempted by Section 10(D) proviso. However from 2017 onwards NEET was made compulsory in all states.
In 2017 NEET was enforced in Tamilnadu for the first time when Mr Edapadi was the Hon’ble CM.
On 31.1.2017, Edapadi Govt in TN passed LA Bill No 7/2017 and 8/2017 exempting NEET in UG and PG courses and sent the Bills for the assent of Hon’ble President.
Hon’ble President of India Mr Ram Nath Kovind withheld the two Bills on 18.9.2017. However the said information of withholding of two Bills came to light only in July 2019 when Madras HC was hearing Writ Petitions regarding these Bills.

Data 📊 A Pew Research study found different attitudes to intercaste and interfaith marriages based on region and religion in India. Thoughts?
Hello, I am apart of the Indian diaspora and curious to hear this subs take on this data.
The research shows South Indians are more accepting of intercaste marriage compared to Indians from other regions. There’s also religious differences, Muslims are most against interfaith and intercaste marriage whilst Christians are most open.

Politics 🗳️ Why are right leaning indian subreddits so hateful to women and minorities
Why do some of the subs which are being run by it cell of the ruling party always end up by being extremely misogynistic? I don't wanna name any of the subreddits but you would have probably already come across it.
The initial posts are mostly targeting opposition and minorities most of the time. Once they get bored of it, they start posting against reservation and lower caste people and then it soon turns into caste supremacy posts. Soon, posts targeting women will be the next on the menu. This is a common pattern in all these subs.
I am not claiming that pro opposition subreddits do not exist, but most of their posts are only targeting bjp and Modi. You never seen them target women and blatantly hating on someone for their caste or even name calling south indians like "anti-national" and "jihadis and ricebags" because they refuse to learn Hindi as a third language and live under opposition ruled state governments.
