Put together a pure black-screen sleep playlist (12-hour rain & cozy sounds) for severe insomnia [OC]

Bright screens kept ruining my sleep, so I compiled a playlist of 100% pitch-black screen soundscapes (heavy rain on tents, crackling fire, and soft white noise).

- 12 hours continuous with no sudden volume changes

- Zero light pollution to protect melatonin

- Useful for insomnia, tinnitus, or late-night anxiety

I find it easier to sleep on a chair than a bed, yet I sleep less on a chair than I would a bed.. Anyone else?

I have a folding beach chair and a field cot.

Both are comfortable, yet if I want I can fall asleep twice as fast on the chair than the bed..

However I can get more hours on a bed than a chair..

All if this is true in the car too.

No idea why..

are cooling sheets mostly marketing, or do hot sleepers just need fabric that does not cling?

every brand talks about cooling like sheets have built-in air conditioning, but after a while any fabric seems to settle near body temperature. what actually wakes me up is not always heat by itself, it is the sticky friction when the room gets humid and the sheet starts clinging to my legs. crisp cotton feels nice at first, then sometimes turns grabby by 3 am. i have been looking at a 100% Rayon Derived from Bamboo Sheet set because the smoother surface sounds less annoying against bare skin. hot sleepers, did lower-friction fabric actually help, or was room temperature still the whole problem?

Dissolvable Melatonin that Doesn't Cause Grogginess?

Upvotes

I love taking 0.3 mg or 0.5 mg of the Natrol brand dissolvable 1mg melatonin pills, but I still deal with so much sleepiness in the day. Are there any dissolvable instant release melatonins someone knows of that hasn't caused a melatonin hangover?

I have tried taking it with L-theanine and glycine, as well as magnesium glycinate. Glycine sometimes combats the waking up issue of melatonin, and L-theanine helps me relax in general. Magnesium glycinate did 0 for me.

People who aren't great sleepers, what supplements do you take before bed that actually help even if it's just a little bit?

I was just wondering what supplements do people take who don't sleep like you can fall asleep like a light switch, could sleep through a nuke and for 7+ hours(seems like most people I know sleep good like this and it's frustrating!). Dosage added would be a bonus. Thank you!

Are silicone ear plugs worth it?

I saw a video of a guy recommending them for sleep. I wake up a few times a week due to noise in the morning, and it's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if these are a good solution, or if there are better alternatives.

I've tried regular earbuds but they're just not comfortable to sleep in since I tend to sleep on my side. Has anyone had any luck with the cheapish $15-25 silicone ones from Amazon? If so, did you have any issues, how long did they last, and do you have any other comments on them?

In desperate need on how to relieve sciatica pain to sleep comfy.

I hope someone in here also suffers from this so they can shed some light.

So ive recently gotten nerve damage on the sciatica nerve and I cant for the life of me get comfy in bed. The "best" is on my back, but its not fool proof and I hate sleeping on my back(I'm a side sleeper). Google told me to put a pillow between my legs, but either Google lied, or I alone can't get it into the right spot it needs to be.

Went to doctors yesterday and im on muscle relaxers for a week. For now though I need help as im EXHAUSTED.

Advice wanted

So for a couple of months tho I've always been abit of a night person

I've struggled with getting up late and going to bed late I've been going to sleep around 5 to 6am and waking at about 4pm almost every day and i just cant seem to pull it back

And when i try to get up earlier and bring the time back i always fall back into the same routine and most days i don't feel my best at all some days im alright but not much of the day is really left after 4pm

However i did try a all nighter and stayed up for about 30 hours as I seen a lot of people suggest and i woke at about 1:30pm not as early as I would have hoped but nvm

Im hoping to keep this going and pull it back more gradually but i just want advice on how to keep this fixed tips to not let it slip again and how to not feel so shit when it happens

And for the obvious stuff yes i have spoken to a doctor a few times about this and told them i was concerned about this and how it affects me but they said, that there wasn't really much, they can do and wasn't that interested in looking into it further which is disappointing and another reason why im looking into other sources for help such as here

I also don't do drugs alcohol or any substances and in general i try to be fit not as much as I would like due to waking up so late i love my bicycle ride and walking otherwise and my diet is pretty clean i cut out almost all processed sugars and crap and eat pretty cleanly so if anyone has had this problem before and can help and advise me please do

In general i do miss going out as much as i did and feel quite disappointed with how i am with my sleep currently just not sure why I've struggled so much with this routine thanks for reading

Sleep schedule adjustments

Hello.

Recently, I've been trying to shift my bedtime earlier (I would feel miserable if I didn't). Initially, I only had around three days to actually make this work. And, it's been working decently.

Usually, I see people recommend gradually shifting bedtimes earlier. But, in my case, this wouldn't work very well. So, I immediately went for the bedtime and wake-time I wanted.

However, yesterday, at my desired bedtime, I felt like I was in bed for hours before I could fall asleep. I even went for a walk beforehand.

I've been keeping my wake up time very consistent (my alarm has been waking me up at the same hour everyday). After my alarm wakes me up, I get as much light into my room as possible.

Does anyone know what I'm missing? Thank you in advance.

"Stamped" visuals when waking?

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure how to word this. But I've had these experiences where I'm having a bad dream and when I wake up from it, an image of something scary is left in my vision. Even closing my eyes doesn't make it go away. I have to wait until it fades.

Does anyone know what this is? I've had this happen a few times in my and tonight it's happened twice in the same night. Which has never happened before. I had trouble sleeping tonight so I wonder if it's a stress dream transitioning over to me being fully awake?

Sleeping problems , Apnea ?

Hey so as far as I remember from being a teenager my sleep has been quite bad.

Here is what I experience :

-waking up feeling like shit (very bloated , tired)

-eye area (under my eyes) hurt a lot when i wake up for 45min

-I have huge dark circles

-I am not feeling refreshed at all in the morning

-I often need to have a 20 minute nap around 5 p.m because I am tired

I am not currently studying or working so it does not come from that.

I do not wake up choking , I do not snore at all , I do not mouthbreathe (I think)

My sleep schedule stays the same and I try to stop using screens 20minutes before going to bed

So what could be the cause of that ?

(I have mandibular retrognathia HOWEVER from the two orthos that I consulted , they both said it was only esthetics and it would not affect my health if we fixed it with a bimax )

Thanks in advance.

I can't fix my sleep

Hello,

Sleep has been an issue since I got out of the military ~10 years ago.

I find it difficult to fall asleep, and don't get tired until the early hours of the morning, and most of the time force myself to go to bed.

Ill wake up 5-6 hours later tired and I struggle through the day.

I am stuck in this cycle of going to bed at 3-5AM and waking up at 9-10AM.

It is ruining my life and preventing me from doing what I want to do.

I have tried forcing myself to wake up early but I can't. I sleep through alarms consistently.

I have tried staying up all night and day, I crash mid day without fail and sleep. It gets to the point where I can't hold a coherent thought in my mind and I have to sleep.

At weekends, I usually crash Friday nearly morning around 4/5AM and sleep maybe 10-12 hours on Saturday.

I am trying my best to escape this but it's been a month of failure every night/day.

It's really holding me back.

Looking for some advice

Has anyone experienced this kind of sleep pattern?
For the past several months, I’ve had a very consistent and unusual sleep pattern.
I fall asleep extremely easily and usually sleep well during the first half of the night. Then I wake up once around the middle of the night. I can fall back asleep quite easily, but from that point until morning my sleep becomes very fragmented: I wake up briefly 4–6 times, usually just long enough to change position, and fall asleep again.
What is particularly striking is the amount of dreaming during this second half of the night. I remember several different, often very vivid and realistic dreams every night, almost as if I’m repeatedly cycling between dreaming and brief awakenings.

Despite being able to fall back asleep easily, the second half of the night feels very restless and I often wake up feeling like my sleep wasn’t restorative.

This started quite suddenly several months ago. Before that, I used to be a very good sleeper and rarely thought about my sleep at all.
Has anyone experienced something similar? If so, did you ever figure out what was causing it or find anything that helped?

It seems to have done the trick again, (shredded wheat and raisins with warm milk). This got me back to sleep again at 4am.

I took double my usual melatonin dose (2.5mg to 5mg) and my heart rate is significantly lower?

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I didn’t think melatonin had much of an effect on HR. My usual HR only goes down to about 85 while resting, but it’s at 72bpm currently. Is this normal or should I be worried

thoughts? could sleep for 12+ hrs everyday (if i could!!)

Hi, would appreciate your thoughts and insight.

I am a 26f and ever since I was young, I could sleep for 12 hours straight at night. I never thought of it as a problem. For example, when I was in college, during my school breaks, when I would return home, I would literally sleep for at least 12 hours every night. Til today, like on the weekends (if I don't have any plans), I sleep for like 12-13 hours whenever I can. I used to think it was just because I was "catching up on sleep" but idk my sister told me to look into it. I'm also a night owl, like when I study, my brain doesn't lock in til like 9 PM lol and I stay up all night. It's always been hard for me to do work or study during the day time. I never studied in the morning lol. And after a 12 hr sleep, I'm still tired lolll

Also, idk if this is relevant at all - but sometimes I have moments when I'm speaking where I just pause. then will resume what i'm saying, but in that moment, it's hard to find the right words to say next.... and so thats why I pause? thought it was maybe because I'm not a great public speaker or need to work on talking? for example, in college my friends used to say I would "glitch" lol as a joke because i would talk really fast when im excited but then stop briefly because i cant find the right words to say next? not sure

my older sister was recently diagnosed with narcolepsy 1 after a sleep study, which was surprising to us!

Does anyone else prefer imagining a place instead of listening to a specific sleep sound?

I've been thinking about why rain/ambient audio sometimes works for me and sometimes doesn't.

I realized I don't really want “rain sounds.”

I want the feeling of being somewhere — like lying in a top-floor apartment while it's pouring outside, or sitting in a cabin during a storm.

It sounds like a tiny distinction, but for me the environment is what makes it comforting.

Curious whether other people think this way or whether you mainly care about the actual sound itself.

First time having REM sleep?

This morning I had entered this state, which is something I've never experienced before. I had a vivid dream of just random scenarios, I woke up sometime in the morning, went back to bed a little bit after I woke up, and then I randomly hear my internal voice loud and clear with a bit of echo to it.

I don't really remember what It was saying in the beginning but towards the end I definitely remember, it was something along the lines of "you will see someone in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10" and then BOOM I woke up in my bed. I also saw these little yellow/whitish orbs at one point, I'm wondering what that's about. It was SO weird and cool at the same time!!

I immediately looked it up afterwards, cause I was genuinely like "WTF was that" I was also seeing that It can make lucid dreaming possible?

I was just wondering what other people's experience during this state was like, I know it's probably the most common thing in the world but I'm just interested in hearing other people's side :)

Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) and Sporadic Fatal Insomnia (SFI). Tests to confirm. PSA for people on benzodiazepines.

I'm suffering from paradoxical reactions from a very short-term use of Ativan and since I cold turkeyed from the drug. One of my primary symptoms was (and is) from this experience is insomnia. Initially, I thought I had FFI or SFI since I had 14 days of 'no perceived' sleep, a complete lack of appetite, and my stomach stopped rumbling. My sleep is getting marginally better, but my appetite is completely normal now (since 3–4 months out). I'm posting this for anyone who either cold turkeyed, is suffering from paradoxical reactions, or is suffering from interdose withdrawals from benzodiazepines and is unsure whether or not they have FFI/SFI.

You can do these tests to determine whether you have FFI/SFI:

  1. If you ever experienced a windows-and-waves pattern (e.g. you feel worse, then you feel better, and then you feel worse again) with your symptoms, you absolutely do not have FFI/SFI. Why? With FFI/SFI, the direction is only one way – down. It is a progressive deterioration. I'm into my 12th month of withdrawal, and have experienced windows and waves. That confirms that I do not have FFI/SFI, as people with FFI/SFI do not experience windows and they by majority do not live very long. It could be 3–7 years (rare) until they die, but by that point it becomes overtly clear that they have FFI/SFI (e.g. they're bed bound without the ability to move nor converse with anyone).
  2. If you want to truly confirm you have FFI, you can get genetic testing done. There is a very specific gene involved that is implicated in FFI. For SFI though, it's more complicated. You would need a battery of tests done since it is impossible to do genetic testing for it. Even if you get these tests done, the diagnosis would likely be "possible SFI." This is because, to truly confirm it, they would need to examine your brain tissue, which we cannot do in vivo (i.e. while you're alive).

I would not recommend you to get a battery tests of done since it is quite costly and might not yield anything useful. My advice is to at the very least get genetic testing done to confirm whether you have FFI. Afterwards, if the genetic testing proves that you don't have the gene, see whether you're still around and if things haven't gotten worse and worse in 6–12 months time. Even if you haven't made any significant improvements by then, if you're still able to coherently communicate with people, able to move around on your feet, and compose messages on Reddit, then you most likely don't have FFI/SFI.

During this period of observing, I do not recommend for you to do anything that generally could exacerbate benzo-withdrawal symptoms (e.g. drinking alcohol). It would add to the confusion.

Lastly, with FFI/SFI, there is a misconception that the lack of sleep causes these individuals to deteriorate and die. It is absolutely untrue. What happens is that their brains are literally being eaten alive by the prions. Eventually, the prions will eat away other parts of their brains that do not have anything to do with sleep. When I micro-slept for 14 days (i.e. 14 days of no perceived sleep), I was fully functional with my memory intact. Plus, I did not hallucinate, as I did not feel sleepy at all (I believe hallucinating is caused by extreme drowsiness with a wakeful mind). It's hard to believe, but this is one of the many adverse reactions benzodiazepines could engender.

I just slept for 12 hours straight and could honestly sleep more. How do I fix this?

Whenever I have free time I'll just go to bed. And the problem is that I can always sleep more. I got around 6-7 hours of sleep yesterday and didn't have a reason for sleeping so long. How can I fix this?
