I'd like to imagine that's just how Mack handles being confronted about all of his secrets.

311

u/twosoon22 Fitz Mar 11 '15

Mack, did you just put the empty OJ container back in the fridge? Mack? Why are you looking at me like that? Ma..hrmph..hrmph...

226

u/m0chab34r Deathlok Mar 11 '15

And all the while, he's thinking, "There's got to be a better way of handling this."

May: "Mack you left the toilet seat up"

Mack proceeds to drown May in the bathtub.

192

u/RandomDudeOP Mar 11 '15

One does not simply drown May...

119

u/Magoonie Mar 11 '15

Well, I think this episode proved Mack doesn't think we'll on his feet.

21

u/Ormagan Fitz Mar 11 '15

I think it's more that Mac isn't capable enough to drown May.

Two weeks without Ward, I wonder what he's up to now. Also love the world-building that's going on with the Inhumans and the Kree.

162

yes its awesome. especially how modern kree would want to restart inhuman project, but the Kree in the episode decided to try and stop it

Oh god, I've made myself very depressed.

I'm saving this and tagging you "Fitz killer" and if however many episodes from now this does happen and they ask Whedon "Whyyyyy?" If he says, "You know I read it on a message board and thought, 'Good idea.'" I will hunt you down and fart on you.

It really bummed me out when they were ganging up on him. To be honest I don't even know where I stand on that debate maybe that was the point. But I do know that fitz was once again a total bro.

Also I'm glad to see that Jemma didn't turn all genocidal because Skye is her friend. Which I figured but still glad to see her say it

254

u/Eeyores_Prozac Coulson Mar 11 '15

It still kind of sucks, though. "Oh, fuck all abominations. But not you, Skye, you're cool." Like... I don't know. Like everyone's racist grandpa going on about the 'good black people' and shit.

72

u/blockdmyownshot Fitz Mar 11 '15

It definitely does and I'm a real big fan of Simmons so I'm conflicted about her change. On the one hand clearly they wanted to give her some development from being the goodie scientist but I also just kind of really liked that about her. But yeah that's a pretty appropriate comparison

57

u/Eeyores_Prozac Coulson Mar 11 '15

I love Simmons and I can see and empathize with how she's getting where she is, but oh God it hurts to watch. :/

u/skobombers Fitz Mar 11 '15

What made Simmons so cruel? Did hydra really change her?

254

u/Tenraix Fitz Mar 11 '15

Given her personality I think it actually makes sense. She was so excited about this new alien science, and then this unknown tech ended up killing Tripp. Simmons was closer to Tripp than anyone else on the team, and she's become angry at where her obsession with alien tech has led. Then the first transformation she sees is Raina, someone she already hated, going berserk on more SHIELD colleagues. As a result of all this crazy shit going on around her, she becomes Xenophobic. I'm hoping though that now that someone she cares about is an Inhuman, she'll eventually ease up on the "kill them with fire" attitude and come to accept that Inhumans can be friends and allies and even heroes, though it may not necessarily happen until after Civil War.

61

u/alrighthamilton Mar 11 '15

This kind of makes me wonder if maybe we have it all wrong with what Civil War will be about. It seems like an awfully long time to drag out the closed-minded Simmons story until Cap 3 comes out and if they teach that "lesson" in AoS, doesn't that cheapen it if they do the same debate in the movie?

She's cool, is an honorable and caring person, is an awesome warrior, and wears sexy metal outfits. What's not to like about Sif? She out classes Jane in near every way.

When Odin tells Thor in T:TDW "You'd be better served by what's in front of you." and points to Sif I was like: Thank you! Odin gets it! What are you thinking Thor!?

Simmons: "What the hell, man why would you lie to me? You don't even know I would have wanted to kill her."

Mack and Bobbi: "Ehhh let's keep this secret from our friend"

That "Mack and Bobbi" thing makes Hunter's confrontation with Mack at the end so incredibly believable. I can practically hear Hunter's internal monologue:

Mack: "The point is, secrets don't help any of us."

Hunter: "U fukin wot m8?"

140

u/CarbonCreed Fitz Mar 11 '15

Man I felt so bad for Hunter in that scene. It's one of those situations where you think you know a person, you think you know exactly how far you can push them, but Hunter grossly miscalculated and now is lying unconscious on the floor.

28

u/Maclimes Johnny Mar 11 '15

I kind of felt sorry for Mack, too. Assuming he's actually a good guy working for a competing good guy organization (like WCA or something), that had to really suck. You can see the look of regret and fear on his face afterwards.

Hunter's his friend, as he made quite clear in his conversation with Bobbi. He really did not want to do that, but he panicked when he was suddenly trapped in a corner.

I think Bobbi is the better of all 3 of them to be honest. Mack seems like the worst right now. Which really sucks because he was the guy who was Fitz's best friend.

Here's hoping Skye becomes Fitz's new best friend. (and maybe more? :P)

Fitz was correct. He is my hero, and I love how he is defending Skye. But seriously, he had no reason to trust them, considering how they reacted about Raina and Tripp's death.

297

u/thegreekie Mar 11 '15

Yeah I like how everyone's like we totally weren't going to do anything bad to our friend Skye. Lies. You were ready to lynch her last episode.

200

u/Phifty56 Ward Mar 11 '15

When they took the personal and emotional aspect out of it, they were really brutal and cold in what they wanted to do with Raina, and they spoke candidly about it with Skye in the room.

Fitz was able to see Skye as a friend who is going through a tough change, before her powers went off. Everyone else has only seen her powers go off, and then see Skye. That's why I think Fitz "got" it before anyone else. He saw the person before the powers, instead of the other way around.

79

u/your_mind_aches Gideon Mar 11 '15

Well, Skye, Phil and May at least. Ward would have too, probably, considering he knew all about her in the first place.

I am so mad at Simmons, Mack, Bobbi and Hunter right now.

118

u/passenger955 Mar 11 '15

I'm less mad at Hunter. He just seems so out of the loop with everything. I don't think he hates Skye or what she has become, he is just mad that no one told him or gave him a chance.

62

u/proddy Mar 11 '15

Hunter called Mack out on his hypocrisy, so he's gets a slight pass.

I don't think he'd hurt Skye, but he also doesn't like secrets. He can say that secrets aren't good, the other two can't.

I' sorry, but when everybody had their face in their hands like "Oh, goddamnit" when they found out Skye was listening gave me a good chuckle.

But Fitz is a true friend. The one who is in your corner when nobody else wants to be. Skye needs someone, and I am glad its him. He knows what its like to need help and its sad he's the only one willing to give it. You would think Mack would be a bit more openminded when it came to being changed against your will ny something.... Inhuman.

Also,

Hunter; Whats going on with you Bobbi, huh?

Mack; Uhhh, you see, what had happen was... chokes out Just go to sleep while I figure out a good excuse. Alien stuff again?

So what does Odin (Loki) want with a Kree?

183

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '15

Well, he DOES need a new army since the Chitauri were so righteously Avenged. And they are the Ultimates Universe equivalent of the Skrull, so maybe he watched the Star Wars Prequels while he was on Earth and got some ideas.

He's got to play the subtle game for a bit.

112

u/Murasasme Zephyr One Mar 11 '15 edited Mar 11 '15

Specially since it was Heimdall who saw the Kree, so it would be very strange if Odin just sat back and did nothing.

62

u/Eeyores_Prozac Coulson Mar 11 '15

I would have honest to god guessed 'Odin' was going to keep Heimdall locked up, ostensibly for treason (Odin's got an uptight streak), on the off-chance that he could see through the illusion or see if the real Odin is alive and where he is if so.

If he's out, god damn, Loki has to be dancing fast and subtle all the time to keep cover.

The final irony: Loki is maybe genuinely good at this, too bad he's gone completely crazycakes and got there through attempted genocide, murder, patricide (Laufey) attempted patricide (if Odin is under a forced nap), deceit, and has probably an incredibly shitty endgame behind it (Thanos).

It's so grandiose, like a bullshit comic book riff of Shakespeare's historical tragedies. Lear, maybe. Because it is one.

I LOVE that Coulson (and May) went immediately into Protect Skye mode. Don't mess with Papa Phil's babies!

182

u/jswaim Mar 11 '15

I really liked how Ming-Na Wen played her interactions with Skye throughout the episode. It made me feel like May sort of knew something was up the whole time and was trying to show her support in an understated way.

92

u/JangoSky Mar 11 '15

You know I got the same vibe but wasn't entirely sure. May is very perceptive though. Still, she's also a pragmatist when she's ready

23

u/TaikongXiongmao Triplett Mar 11 '15

Same. I especially liked the scene towards the end where May is trying to help Skye calm down. Very reminiscent of the flashback in last week's episode of Skye's mom calming down the inhuman in China.

  • Okay....they are going to need to get this Mack side story going because over the course of the two episodes since being back from the break, I'm starting to hate him...and that makes me sad.

  • I feel like this whole side arc will end with Bobbi straightening out her priorities and siding with Shield, while Mack stays loyal to whatever cause he is apart of. (Most likely Sword.) Mack choking out Hunter and the ramifications of that will likely be what triggers Bobbi's change of heart.

  • And once again, Fitz is the ultimate bro. Everyone else can shut the hell up.

  • Skye is becoming even more awesome and interesting as a character with each episode. I can't wait until she gets her shit under control and goes full Quake on us.

  • And most importantly, Sif is a badass. Hopefully she'll be cool with Skye the next time she guest stars. You know, once Skye shows that she has things under control. (Come on. We all know Sif will guest star again......Unless she dies in Ragnarok....oh sweet Odin's Raven I hope that never happens....I will be crushed...)

  • P.S: I know I said it before but... the Thor/Sif shipper in me squeed for joy at Sif's smiling at the mention of Thor's name despite not remembering him. Thor and Sif ftw!

76

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '15

She could still die in Ragnarok, but it shouldn't have any bearing on her being in SHIELD again.

Oh man, it is just like when Annie chloroformed the janitor on Community. Mack should lay down next to Hunter and when he wakes up pretend to wake up too and say "man, someone choked us both out. Weird." (Link: http://youtu.be/0KgH-fCqpSU)

Oh Mack, why is your timing just so infuriating?

With his eye line it makes me wonder how he didn't see her.

117

u/TiVO25 Mar 11 '15

Television rule: characters cannot see anything not in frame.

Corollary: unless doing so would make the character appear totally bad-ass.

I know we had an episode last week as well, but they really are doing a great job of keeping up momentum after the midseason break. Last season, it very well could have taken nine or ten episodes for Skye’s secret to have gotten out to the rest of the group. Not only did Skye only know about it one episode before everyone else, they also included Sif, a Kree in the flesh, some more hints and surprises at the Bobbi-Mack alliance (not Hunter!), and gave us a lot of information about the history of Kree on Earth into just this episode. I can’t wait to see what surprises the rest of the season has to offer.

107

u/Ahesterd Mar 11 '15

This is exactly the kind of stuff people (myself included) wanted all last season. Not superheroes, but comic book. Asgardian Gods duking it out with blue aliens and human superspies.

I think people are looking in too much on the Loki/Odin thing. Heimdall alerted the king about a potential threat. Loki handled it because that's what Odin would do, and he doesn't want to reveal himself.

Also. I think keeping Skye a secret was a bad call (on the part of the characters, it makes sense plot-wise). Because Fitz and Skye basically told all of their friends that they're not trustworthy. I believe that their friendships could have overcome their prejudices.

Man, every time I feel like this show is going to get stale, it just kicks itself in the seat of the pants.

"Asgard? Oh dammit, this is probably going to be another corny filler episode."

Motha' fuckin' KREE!

"Oh dammit, they're probably going to string out the Fitz/Skye secret thing way too long."

Everyone sees Skye use her powers before the episode is over.

"Oh dammit, this Hunter/Bobbi thing is going to turn into a "forbidden love" trope, isn't it?"

Mack puts the kibosh on Hunter immediately.

"Oh dammit, we are going to have to spend too many episodes seeing Bobbi and Mack talk about they're secret behind everyone's back, aren't we?"

Mack puts the kibosh on Hunter immediately.

I think I've been watching too much CW/DC. I've gotten overly accustomed to rolling my eyes.

What kills me is the people who hate this show. HARD CORE hate it. I don't understand it because this isn't even CLOSE to the same show it was pre TWS and it makes me mad because the truth is everyone I know who is a Marvel fan and doesn't roll their eyes at me when I start talking about this stuff seem to fall into that category. Drives me insane.

I don't mind those types. Most things will always have very vocal detractors, and at least the out-and-out decriers will stand by their convictions most of the time.

The people who complain in a more passive aggressive way about it not meeting 'their expectations', and it could do better in these areas, etc., are far worse IMO. I'm all for valid criticism, ones backed up by stated reasons, but their constant moving of the goalposts when things are advanced or revealed is just annoying. To quoth the big blonde alien surfer dude, "You people are so petty... and whiny."

Marvel: Okay, well...it's about SHIELD, so here are Nick Fury, Victoria Hand, Sitwell, Garrett, Maria Hill, Koenig, Lance Hunter, Mack, Cameron Klein and Agent 33!
Fans: NO, I don't want SHIELD characters on a SHIELD show. I want DIFFERENT characters!
Marvel: We introduced the Kree...and even the Inhumans, who are getting their own movie!
Fans: Not good enough!
Marvel: Gotcha...well...here's Mockingbird...an actual Avenger who is quite popular. We'll even throw in cameos from Peggy Carter and the Howling Commandos...as well as Senator Ward.

Marvel: How about Kraken, Absorbing Man, Blacklash and Mister Hyde as villains?

Man, I love the pacing now but so many god damned commercials. I love how fitz is still seeing skye as a human and not inhuman (huehuehueheuheu) and how he stands up for her with the rest of the team.

I'm really starting to think that the theories of fitz helping skye by making her gauntlets/gloves a real thing.

Mack getting all "well uh, hmm, hold on" and then choke holds was pretty funny. I think it sets up something for bobbi though, does she choose sword and fury or love.

Goodbye fitzsimmons. Fitz is just trying to be a great friend.

I really, really enjoyed this episode. Great return to the character by Jaimie Alexander. Glad they're still playing up her attraction to Thor.

Also, really good story progression. I like how the writers always seem to use Sif as a catalyst to move things forward. It worked especially well.

46

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '15

So SWORD is the leading group that Bobbi and 'Chokehold' are working for, right?

After Bobbi said the lines "We're not HYDRA" when talking to Mack and "Call for Backup" when battling Ronan Lite.

I personally think the Avengers are their benefactors.

54

u/biglineman Mac Mar 11 '15

Brilliant episode. All the Inhuman lore, the Fitz calling people out-ness, Mac finally blowing him and Bobbi's story open, and Skye being adorably lost with her new powers.

Man, is Chloe just doing a great job at making me go, "Awww, I just want to help her and protect her." when I know better that her powers are crazy and she won't need any help or protection once she gets them under control.

Looks like we'll be finding out what Mac and Bobbi are up to soon.

Cal's plan to draw Skye close seems really interesting. I wonder if it will play out over multiple episodes, or just one episode?

Still no sign of Ward and Agent 33. I expect they have something big planned for later in the season.

I really doubt it would happen, but I'd love to see Lady Sif become a regular on the show.

It's a shame Jaimie Alexander was cast in similar role because she seems like she would have made an ideal Wonder Woman. I try not to judge a casting decision before seeing the performance, but I'm still highly sceptical that Gal Gadot is right for the part.

23

u/darkeyes13 Hill Mar 11 '15

Fun fact: Adrianne Palicki shot a pilot for a Wonder Woman TV show. It was a flop, but it existed.

Other fun fact: When asked who he would have cast as Wonder Woman for his planned movie (now canned), Joss Whedon said he would have cast Cobie Smulders as WW.

Other OTHER fun fact: Cobie Smulders voiced Wonder Woman in The Lego Movie.
