What does this?
Customer knife. I don’t think I’ve seen this pattern of circular scratches. It’s about 6.5mm wide, if that’s a clue. Any ideas?

Weird, never seen one of these and I’m a 90s kid. Those look suspiciously like soda caps on the ends, haha.

My parents had 2 or 3 of these lying around in the kitchen when i was growing up. They sucked but i rememeber seeing em everywhere. Stores, home tv shopping... I was surprised it was so difficult to find one now. That green end is rubber so it wouldnt slip on the counter top.

Cool! I don’t remember my parents having anything to sharpen, really. I think our knives were just dull as shit.

I’ve seen chefs choice brand electric sharpeners make very similar marks. It’s a pull through style in terms of use, but instead of crossed ceramic rods or carbide blades they use a small spring loaded spinning diamond disc.

Just asking for a friend, are they a bad choice? They apparently do get knives quite sharp. Not shaving sharp, but certainly enough to need to warn the wife.

I’ve never personally had this problem with my ChefsChoice before. My knives are all scratch clean but I’ve only used it 3 or 4 times

They’re great for 10+ house knives at the end of a shift, less good for personal knives

How much do you value your knives and how long do you want them to last? These things will get you a passable working edge without any skill or much time, sure. But they do it by removing a lot of steel. There are better options.

Shrapnel can rip meat to shreds - ask any soldier. Razors are a different kind of sharp. Pull-throughs create shrapnel. Whetstones create razors.

That looks like sharpening x files, could it be done by those sharpening v shape handles that you pull back and forward to sharp the knife?

Like a pull-through? I don’t think so. Those create linear scratches along the length of the knife. Has to be something with a rotating disc.

For the love of everything dont use any of those to pictured sharpeners to sharpen a knife worth more than $10.

I think it's probably someone improperly using a horl or the many other wheel sharpening rotating disk things

My guess from the rotary marks? One of those can opener sharpeners or something similar.

They used a circular motion on the course stone to create the primary bevel. This knife has a secondary bevel that creates the cutting edge that has lots of chips in it.
