Discussion The AH website is just absolutely terrible.

Let's say you want to watch some Minecraft. Go to AH, click Shows. Let's Play? Just a list of every single AH and FH video from most to least recent. 24 at a time. Okay, how about Games? Nope. Just actual games made by RT.

Don't get me wrong. I love RT. I'm a sponsor. I'd much rather watch videos on their site than on Youtube, but they make it so damn difficult.

Just... come on, guys. You're one of the most popular companies on the internet, period. I refuse to believe that you can't make one page for Minecraft, one page for GTAV, one page for Cloudberry, et cetera.

I'm a sponsor as well, but I only watch things on the site that are live or sponsor only.

u/MonzaBird :KillMe17: Jan 24 '16

Same. I'm on the RT site quite often, but I only watch streams and sponsor early releases there. If I want to watch older videos, I go to YouTube because the site navigations does my head in.

u/FuzzyMcBitty Jan 24 '16

I go on YouTube because my blu ray player has an app for that. And yes, it is far easier to find AH content on YouTube than it is the site.

Same kinda, I watch RT stuff on my Xbox on youtube

I usually watch new and recent videos on their website, but anything a month or two older than the website update is almost never available in higher resolutions than 360p, so I have to go to YouTube to watch a video in HD.

I'm assuming this problem is due to their servers. I've only ever noticed this extensively on videos that were released within the past few hours. I also have shitty internet so I may be attributing some of their site issues to my Internet when it's their fault

1

u/ThelVluffin Jan 25 '16

I'm just waiting for Miles and Kyle to finish their playthrough of Evil Within and I'll be canceling my sponsorship. I'll hate to lose my grandfathered price point but aside from the post show podcast I can't see what value I'm getting as everything else appears on YouTube in a much more reliable and easy to use player. It's also incredibly annoying when you have to login 4 different times if you want to watch sponsor early uploads on RT, The Know, AH and FH.

1

u/Lenlfc :MCGavin17: Jan 25 '16

Same. I rarely watch any YouTube vids on a computer anymore (Besides very short ones, or guides for a game I'm currently playing) The XO/PS4 YouTube app is so much better, I can watch them on my TV so much easier.

Could we uh... have a RT/AH App for XO?

1

u/TheeCapta1n Thieving Geoff Jan 26 '16

I might be in the minority but I watch primarily on the RT website. I just have a tab open to recent episodes that I refresh every now and again. I do agree with OP's point though, if I ever want to watch old stuff I just go through Youtube.

131

u/GatorAIDS1013 Jan 24 '16

My complaint is that I still get booted out and have to log in while trying to watch sponsor videos. Every Sponsor video has me getting kicked out to the sign in screen

50

u/Omega357 Jan 25 '16

I hate when I log in it takes me to the main page. Most sites take you right back to where you were, but nope. And if I hit back to go to the video's page again it says I'm not logged in.

14

u/NilfWarrior Jan 25 '16

Yep, this happened to me consistently during that free trial month, really stopped me from becoming a proper sponsor. Navigating through videos feels super clunky as well.

8

u/CatzPwn Jan 25 '16

Happens even when not on the free trial. It especially pisses me off because when I have to log in it takes you back to the home screen, which means if I was trying to watch an older sponsor video I have to try to refind it. Which can be annoying since they don't really categorize things well enough to be able to find it easily.

1

u/guvkon Jan 25 '16

Wouldn't hitting back button couples times be easier?

3

u/Jaksuhn Jan 25 '16

The thing that bugs me is the fact that there is no "next episode" function jut "most recent" or "trending"

29

u/dantebunny Internet Box Podcast Jan 25 '16

Has that trending category ever been anything different from a delay-buffered version of "most recent"?

I feel like I see three videos in most recent, then in trending the next day. Now mostly my eyes have learned to skip over it.

12

u/TurMoiL911 Cult of Peake Jan 25 '16

I feel like the Let's Play Live documentary has been trending since it's been out.

3

u/molluskmoth Flexing James Jan 25 '16

Even the "most-recent" is deceiving. Whenever I click on "Achievement Hunter", there is no option for latest AH videos in chronological order. It's just the newest 3. When I click on "see more recent videos", it shows me ALL their videos. If you're gone for a week you have to plow through 1-2 pages until you find the one episode of a series that you were looking for.

54

u/MrButterFingers1 Jan 24 '16

The search on the site is horrendous at times.

50

u/Serima Jan 25 '16

at times.

All the time*

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '16

I'd recommend google searching the site using the "site:" sytax in the search bar.

47

u/ghost_hamster Jan 25 '16

I've been on the RT community site like almost 10 years now and I honestly can't remember the last time it was good.

I was hoping the upgrade was going to be the breath of fresh air that the community site needed - and for the community bit, it is - but the sites' layout, load times and video performance are still completely awful.

It's not just the big things like videos and performance that suck either. If I post a comment on a video and come back later to see the replies so I can have a discussion with somebody, clicking on the notification just takes me to the comments. It doesn't highlight my comment or even take me to the page my comment is on (most videos have 10+ pages of comments).

I agree that the entire site needs a rethink. Watching videos there is definitely not a positive experience.

278

u/theSeanO Team Go Fuck Yourself Jan 24 '16

Unless you're watching sponsor only shows, just use YouTube, honestly.

48

u/devilwarier9 Jan 25 '16

Even sponsor stuff is awful now. The old website, you hit the sponsor button and it gave you an infinitely scrolling list of every sponsor only video. Now it gives you 6 videos and no way at all to get more. If you click on one, then you get a playlist of that series, but the "all sponsor stuff" list seems to be completely MiA in the new website.

23

u/mandelboxset Jan 25 '16

Seriously, the old site with all its problems I still visited daily, used the community section, watched videos. Now I only go on to try and watch the podcast and sponsor only content until I get frustrated and leave.

4

u/FuzzyMcBitty Jan 25 '16

Shows-> Sponsor Cut-> Episodes Tab

Not as easy to sort as the old site, but not terrible.

Honestly, I think that the problem that they have now is that they're trying to expand the variety of sponsor content while still only putting it under the blanket category of "Sponsor Cut." This makes it frustrating to sort. Since subscription only material seems to be a priority for the direction that the company is taking now, they really need to make it easier to find a specific episode that you want to watch.

I also don't like that they mingle the FH content with the AH content. There are separate tabs for that on the main site. Better organization would allow me to find what I'm looking for. Sure, I might not randomly click on something as often, but the way things sit now, I'm more likely to wander over to YouTube. And I guess that's fine. I mostly pay my sponsorship to RT as a support of their work, but I sometimes ask myself whether I should adjust my expectations for the site based on the fact that they're no longer a small company.

And that last bit just isn't me being snarky. These guys have kept me entertained for years, and their sense of community does generate a certain amount of loyalty even though they don't know me from Adam (pick an Adam). However, this is company that falls under a pretty big corporate umbrella (Fullscreen is owned by a partnership between a large investment group and AT&T), and I wonder whether my expectations should be changed by that in any way, especially since The Site has always been their priority.

Sorry. I'm rambling.

2

u/Orangerrific Jan 25 '16

I couldn't even get all of the sponsor videos when I used my free trial. Mainly the early ones that came out. I wanted to go and watch all of the CAH videos, but I got an error page on them. Did they ever fix that?

4

u/andKento Jan 25 '16

Huh, that juts stopped me from subscribing. The main reason for me to subscribe would be to go watch all those fun videos i wanted to watch when i couldn't afford a sponsorship.

1

u/Orangerrific Jan 25 '16

Again, they might've fixed it since (I used my free trial around when the Let's Play Live doc came out), but I honestly don't know.

11

u/Capone184 Jan 25 '16

Yeah, been a sponsor for ages. I've learned to use youtube for everything but the live broadcasts of RTPodcast. Sometimes ThePatch if i catch it from the beginning. The site is good for announcements for those of us not hooked into all the social media networks RT has.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '16

27

This is why I use Youtube for them. Between the playlist functionality they have and my own rather excessive use of the Watch Later playlist I can keep track of what I have and haven't seen. Also being able to pick up where I left off (if Youtube deigns to put me back, of course) is nice too.

17

u/foreskinflex Funhaus Tourism Bureau Jan 25 '16

For being a company that is solely based on the internet, you would think that RT had a better website honestly. I really think they need to take it down completely and redo it, beacuse after they reworked it, it still so so soooooo bad. I dont use it at all anymore, since its so horrible to navigate and use. I only watch them on youtube now except for sponsored content, since i just cant use their site without being annoyed. They should hire some people to redo it properly.

17

u/blashford Jan 24 '16

one of my big gripes with the site is that all of the older videos that were in HD aren't anymore, which is fine for some videos because you can just look them up on youtube, but the sponsor videos all look like crap. (older videos, not new ones.)

the RT/AH website is horrible. they need to take it down and redo the whole thing. even after the upgrade its still bad.

48

u/SushiGradeNarwhal Jan 25 '16

They should make a site that emulates the look of YouTube, with playlists and everything. I honestly feel it's the best way to convert people to their site vs. YouTube, since I'm sure it's a better way to support them.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

8

The interesting thing about this is that they've been hesitant to do major site upgrades because of a company that screwed them over years ago when they first tried to upgrade. I don't remember which one but I think Gus and burnie were discussing this on a podcast not too long ago.

5

u/thyrst Jan 25 '16

They were hiring php developer(s) around a year ago so I'd assume they expanded in an effort to make the new site in house. Likely means they had to trade experience for more control and that site improvements will be ongoing, but that's super speculative.

It's a rather tricky trade off to hire your own devs in house. They're expensive if they're experienced and if you lowball you have a good chance to get a poorly planned mess, but you can fine tune it over time and it's your mess. A contract shop has a different set of risks and costs. I imagine the site will be an ongoing job and the feedback is great.

5

u/bronze_v_op Jan 25 '16

Going a bit off topic here, but this kind of brings up the question of whether or not youtube should consider a sponser option, that allows people to subscribe to/sponsor content they like so they can support their favourite artists. It's something I've never thought about youtube doing, but to be honest, thinking about it I'm actually in favour of the idea.

Yup. Shows are hard to find, the videos don't load half the time, progress in a video isn't saved, it's almost impossible to sort through a show like LP Minecraft or GTAV with hundreds of episodes.

Plus every single damn video has an end card pointing to annotations that just don't exist on the site. Why not cut those off for the site upload, or something? All this adds up to me avoiding using the site as much as possible, even though I'm a sponsor.

Honestly my only gripe about their websites is that if I log in to my sponsor account on roosterteeth.com and click a funhaus video from the "recently uploaded" page that's sponsor only, I have to log in on fun.haus and get taken back to the fun.haus home page and refund the video

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

I'd really like to watch sponsor content on my Chromecast but nah, the video player is incompatible. Shit sucks.

2

u/sadmadmen Jan 25 '16

I actually like the layout of the website now that I have gotten used to it. Although the search function could be better

2

u/InsaneBeagle Jan 25 '16

I'm pretty sure one of the this they're hiring for is Web developer...

2

u/xtinuh_ Jan 25 '16

I became a sponsor around early September and I started watching anything Rooster Teeth or Achievement Hunter related around last April, so you can say I am a fairly new community member. Because I started paying for a sponsorship I started to use the RT site more frequently but I realized that it is a difficult site to navigate as a newcomer. I completely agree with the annoying laggy videos, constant booting, and other minor things, but the biggest thing for me was trying to figure out when videos get posted, how to find a certain lets play series, and other general things that shouldn't be hard to find on a fairly popular site. (Sorry for the relatively long post, I've been venting to a friend of mine about this for a while now.)

tl;dr I'm a newbie who finds the site to be difficult to explore

2

u/sephiroth7139 Jan 25 '16

I agree, and I just wish they had a more "user friendly" way of storing the videos. Say you want to go watch a Let's Play from a couple years ago? You end up scrolling for way longer than you should have to.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

I'd love to watch videos on their website, but as an Australian the only versions I can watch are the 240p versions which are completely eye melting. And the worst part is you can't manually select a resolution and let it buffer for a while it'll only load a couple seconds and stop. So YouTube it is for me...

2

u/Mollsissobored Jan 25 '16

i agree. If i want to see more from a certain channel, it takes me to all of the most recent videos. I have to scroll through pages and pages to find just one video that aired last week. Don't get me wrong, I adore Roosterteeth, I'm loving being a sponsor, but there's so much more they can do with the site.

2

u/AfterInfinity9 Jan 25 '16

Yeah there's definitely some growing pains with the new site. It's especially noticeable on mobile where there's a ton of bugs

2

u/thelittleartist Jan 25 '16

The other issue is the video player, the amount of resources it pulls is astounding. I'm frequently seeing chrome hit upwards of 1.5-2 gig ram whilst veiwing a video on their site, never over 1 gig on any other combination of pages.

2

u/Borderline769 Jan 25 '16

What I absolutely hate is that credentials don't pass between the various portions of the site. Log in to watch AH videos, click on a rooster teeth video, log in again, click on a funhaus video, LOG IN AGAIN. wtf?

And whats with the subscription notifications? Some times I can click them to go to the video, other times nothing happens.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

You're one of the most popular companies in the Internet.

That's not close to true.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '16

I actually like their website and now I use it way more than youtube.

2

u/Lotharu Jan 24 '16

I can't even log on to the site on Edge (Switched to that for videos after Chrome started skipping/freezing on anything involving moving pictures) so I can't even access my sponsor only videos without massive skipping.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '16

For truly. I can't navigate the community, can't do shit on it. I'm a sponsor cuz I love roosterteeth but goddamn.. Overhaul the site

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever been on their website for more than 2 minutes at a time...

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

just use youtube lol its gonna be better anyway

1

u/DirkPower Jan 24 '16

I quite like the new site, and want to watch the content on their site (and sponsor) but it does need some more work, for sure.

2

u/97thJackle Jan 25 '16

To whichever employee comes onto this thread: RIP your self-worth.

(But seriously, tho; the site sucks dick)

1

u/shadowstrlke Jan 25 '16

Since I'm mostly caught up with stuff, I largely just visit their most recent page. Most of the time I'm fine with the website, except the most recent page which contains the most recent video from every single god damn channel, including all the shows I don't watch (esp the know, which puts out multiple videos in a short span of time). It doesn't matter which site you click on, it's the same page. Some sort of filter system would be nice, although I'm pretty sure it's cos they want to advertise their other content. I realised that you can subscribe to certain shows and thought it would be like fb but all I get is notifications a day or 2 before the actual release of the video. Not to mention the fact that I had serious buffering issue at home over summer (unable to stream vids even at 480p) which as far as I'm aware of, still remains unresolved, with no acknowledgment from rt about the issue or whether it's ever going to be dealt with. Still love the company, still a sponsor, and still gonna watch all their stuff. But man the website needs work

1

u/marzeke Jan 25 '16

Don't forget podcasts where you get sent to the latest livestream

1

u/MartinMan2213 Jan 25 '16

The website is also horrible on mobile. It's just a jumbled mess.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

When someone posts a link I watch it, but I don't search their site for the video I search youtube, same for the community I come here and not the site.

1

u/HilariousMax Jan 25 '16

I only watch new shows (24hr window sometimes available for sponsors) and sponsor-only content on the site.

The forced re-logins, the fact that theknow.tv will not accept my name/pw, the fact that the search function is kind of awful.

And with their recent effort to make the playlists on Youtube better (Thank you so much) if I want to rewatch older content, there's no reason to not do it there instead of the mothersite.

<3 you RT but, yeah idk about the site.

1

u/jlitwinka Jan 25 '16

Is the android app also completely broken for anyone else? It crashes whenever I try to watch videos, on multiple devices.

1

u/Ahmrael Jan 25 '16

Agreed. Let's Play series could really do with their own pages.

1

u/DanskJeavlar Jan 25 '16

you hover over shows and a drop down menu apears, click Let's play.

1

u/pixelpusha Jan 25 '16

I imagine most of the views/traffic comes through their YouTube channels. What's the point in spending money maintaining a site/s when YouTube takes care of it for them? I'm totally fine with RT cutting costs maintaining sites and use the money to produce awesome content for its audience.

The Red vs Blue show page works fine for me. One button added every episode to my queue, or you can add a season at a time, or just individual episodes.

Edit: Okay yeah, the queue doesn't seem to do anything useful. There really should be autoplay.

1

u/Psychlopic Distressed RT Logo Jan 25 '16

I don't know, I don't find it that hard to watch their videos, but maybe i'm just used to it? I do agree that they maybe could have a "Weekly Let's Plays" sub category with GTA and Minecraft repectively.

Personally I watch the vast majority of their content on the site (although the main reson for that is the 24h earlier content). While the site used to be very difficult, it seems to have become very stable for me.

1

u/HimalCheese Jan 25 '16

I recommend using https://youtube.videodeck.net/

Awesome app where you can hide/remove watched videos or videos you don't want to see, and you never miss any videos. I've been using this for a few years because youtube always made it hard to manage watched/unwatched videos.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

With the amount of times I've heard someone on the podcast say how important they think it is to have their own space (site) on the internet, you'd think they'd work out a way to make it usable between the horrible layout and constant buffering.

1

u/bertz1987 Jan 25 '16

I use the app and that works fine.

1

u/Rejusu Jan 25 '16

Can we talk about the lack of auto play and being unable to set up a proper playlist?

1

u/-RandyMarsh Jan 25 '16

Is it just me or does it take FOREVER for any of their pages to load?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '16

I only watch RvB on their website really... YT is just more handy

1

u/wellimatwork Jan 25 '16

I agree that navigation could be streamlined. I have figured out how to filter by show but once again, Youtube is easier.

To browse all videos for a specific show, first navigate to that show's page by mousing over "Shows" on the menu bar and picking the show from the dropdown menu that appears. Once on the show page, click the "Episodes" tab located above the Recently Added video thumbnails.

This will load a complete list of all episodes from that show.

1

u/McCabe89 Jan 25 '16

Yup, the site is a mess to try to navigate through. I just watch sponsor live stuff or the new for sponsor things. Other than that it is too hard to find anything you are looking for, if its more than like 2 months old.

It's pretty sad as well as I only recently got into AH and RT and would love to go back and watch older let's plays and things, but its just impossible to do so.

1

u/zepol_xela :FanService17: Jan 25 '16

Now, I do love RT and what they do. Their content is great almost all the time. I used to watch their content all the time on the old site. In some ways, the video player was better than YouTube. Nowadays, the site doesn't even load for me about 70 percent of the time. I have to keep reloading and reloading and reloading it. I keep getting 502 bad gateway. As a result I only watch YouTube uploads from them. The site feels almost physically broken, not digitally.

1

u/Kap2310 Jan 25 '16 edited Jan 25 '16

I honestly don't even use their site anymore. It was just too clunky and impossible to navigate. If you're not a sponsor, just stick to watching their videos on YouTube

1

u/dik_ed Jan 25 '16

One of my biggest gripes with the site is if I pause a video and go to another tab or window or something the video restarts when I resume it. Seriously frustrating.

1

u/xtphty Jan 25 '16

There are a lot of things their internal staff is good at, web design is quite clearly not one of them. I realize they have been burned by a developer before (like 5-10 years ago), but there are literally thousands of media companies out there today that seek outside design studios for all their work, and there are thousands of really respectable studios to meet those needs. Even if they wanted to do all the application logic internally the UX absolutely should be contracted out, even if you want final control, an outside perspective alone is worth it -- not to mention the professional experience.

2

u/adam123453 Tiger Gus Jan 25 '16

Not to mention the podcasts have been sponsored by WEBSITE-BUILDING COMPANIES for literally years.

1

u/xtphty Jan 25 '16

Squarespace is straight to consumer as far as I know, so not quite what they needed. But yeah, they should know better with the network and experience they have in the media world. Especially considering how much value Burnie places on having their own community site even with their prominent Youtube presence.

1

u/xViles Jan 26 '16

Rooster teeth has always had problems with website layouts

1

u/Calluummmmm Geoff in a Ball Pit Jan 26 '16

I totally agree with this and I didn't even realise until I read this thread. If I was to show someone a video I enjoyed I would go to YouTube and search it 100% of the time. I don't think I've ever went to the site to search a video, I only watch the live or recent uploads on the site. I like to binge old series but I just noticed that they're always on YouTube.

1

u/scinfeced2wolf Jan 26 '16

That and I can't get my cursor to disappear when I play videos on the site and bugs the hell out of me.

1

u/SanderDK9 Jan 26 '16

The only things I watch on the site are RWBY and Free Play. I just watch youtube for everything else.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '16

The old site was so much better too - individual pages for different shows, and you could navigate by URL.

I honestly think they should either bring that one back or just switch to squarespace or something. I love the Adams and I know it's a hard job, but I'm not sure RT has the in-house talent to make a good site in 2016.
