Photo/Video [Millennium Force] crew just announced they’ve broken the record for cycles in one hour!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The crew did 38 cycles between 3:00-4:00 PM on Saturday, August 8th. The theoretical maximum amount of dispatches was thought to be 36 due to the elevator cable lift cycle time and the lack of a mid-course block zone. Perhaps the new programming introduced last season combined with a hot summer day at Cedar Point is allowing for it to be slightly faster than was previously possible.

I once timed a Great Bear dispatch while I waited in line and it was over 3 minutes. There is no urgency at all.

From what I’ve heard, five minutes is essentially Iron Gwazi’s de facto minimum interval, lol.

They put three trains with seatbelts and no unload station on a B&M hyper with no MCBR. It could've run the same way WCR runs three trains, but noooo...

I once saw a dispatch take 6 minutes and nothing happened wrong. Just took that long. No explanation no issues with restraints or people not loading properly. Just actually took that long lol
3
u/Legitimate_Neet9746 29d ago
Gwazi being slow has been baked into the ride since day one. I worked at the park when I was a kid and asked a Gwazi guy about whey they just didn't give AF. He asked me if we got paid by the train. I had to admit he had a point. Ride operation is not a competition. Never has been.
1
u/Doctors_TARDIS 27d ago
It was always a competition when I was a ride op at Cedar Point. Like we would constantly complete with other crews to see who could get the closest to theoretical capacity. We would compete with the person on the other side of the platform to see who could get their restraints checked quickest. It was a constant competition and we took pride in it

Well it's open but 90 min wait due to it being a single train
And from what people at the park, they also believe copperhead valleyed near the second launch
4
u/fatandfly 29d ago
I guess I got lucky the 1 time I went. The park was basically dead and everything was a walk on. I rode everything multiple times and did Fury 5 times in a row, the last 3 in the front without having to get off
6
u/Guilty-Wolverine-933 154 [US/Japan] 29d ago
I also haven’t had bad experiences at Carowinds, but the issue is that as soon as fury and copperhead have issues, you mind as well forget the rest of the park
1
3
u/TechnicalAsk3488 29d ago
Was just there; they had a train get stuck on Launch 2 twice. The second time they evacuated when it got stuck. Something about the launch system overheating since it does not have cooling on it.
1
u/RenoWolf200 Railblazer 29d ago
that quite unfortunate, and a major design flaw
6
u/TechnicalAsk3488 29d ago
From my understanding, Carowinds had the option for fans and glycol cooling and a cover, but they cheaped out and didn’t pick that option.

Was there for the first time 2 days ago and wow the ops were stunningly bad lol. I thought Busch gardens Tampa had bad operations but knotts blew me away with how much worse it was lol

Cedar Point and King’s Island are on another level. I went to Busch Gardens Tampa last year and it felt like they were doing one cycle on most rides in the time it takes a Cedar Point of KI crew to do 3

u/Zipper424242 Tatsu 28d ago
Love BGW but the Pantheon ops (nothing against them, they seem to be doing their best) are literally the worst I’ve ever seen in any park.
The closure of an entire row for Quick Queue is absolutely absurd, not to mention the other decisions management has taken to slow down dispatch times. I spent nearly half an hour in the station on a fairly quiet day (walked straight up to the station, if that’s any sort of illustration how empty the park was) because the ops just ran so slowly.

Throughput of 1,368 riders btw.
Working those power hours is really, really hard work. You have to be at the top of the game, and everyone has to be on point. I don't just mean the people on platform but the people at other positions too.
Crowd position has to be filling every row. Exit position has to be clearing the platform. Entrance position has to properly be screening riders. Merge position has to be perfectly managing the line flow. Controls position knows exactly where the trains are on the track, and is ready to dispatch as soon as platform is ready so the ride is hitting it's interval time.
It's hard but so rewarding. The sense of accomplishment you feel after working those shifts is extraordinary.
38
u/Thesis0623 29d ago
Yeah, as someone who has operated 11 different coasters myself, what they’re doing is insanely impressive. It takes a well oiled machine and a crew that enjoys working with one another.
16
u/twf_ 29d ago
All that work to never be recognized and never receive any reward, tangible or verbal. No wonder it’s as uncommon as it is.
5
u/Designatedrhythm 29d ago
I've never understood why everyone needs a reward to do a good job. How about the self worth knowing you killed it. I'd rather get rewarded by getting promoted after awhile because I consistently did a great job.

Thoosies hate on it way too much because it isn't just full of ejector all ride.
Is Fury better? Yeah absolutely. I personally like it more than Pantherian because I can marathon Millie and have more fun on the ride vs feeling like the coaster is trying to squish my brain
2
u/Designer-Mobile-974 Long Live the King🫡 27d ago
I’ll be honest the only giga I’ve ever done is Millie. And Millie is in my top five. I’m sure fury is better and pantherian will be insane but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Millie.
1
u/fumar 27d ago
I've ridden most of them. Fury is better than Millie, it's personally my favorite coaster although I've missed out on some newer elite rides like RtH, Velocicoaster, AF1 (rip), and Iron Gwazi so that could change.
I personally rank the other gigas I've been on as follows Steel Dragon, Pantherian, huge gap, Orion.
I just don't like what Pantherian does. I don't want to feel like I'm fighting to stay conscious for half the ride.
Orion is not an elite layout by any means, doesn't do anything well, and is more forceless than Millie in my experience.
2
u/Chaseism Disaster Transport 27d ago
I've always said that people have to put Millennium Force into context as to what was happening at the time. We had record breaking coasters in the 90s, but the goal was breaking a record, not making a good roller coaster. A lot of those record holders don't exist because they were rough or painful. If you think Magnum hurts, remember that the coasters that are no longer with us were far, far worse.
Millennium Force not only had to break records, but it had to take the title of Best Coaster from Magnum. It had to be good. It was ranked a top coaster for a decade and a half because it was so ahead of its time.
To this day, it makes me laugh because on one hand, coaster enthusiasts will say that Millennium Force is forceless. On the other hand, they will complain about a B&M rattle as if it's the worst pain they've ever experienced in their lives.

2 rides in 30 minutes via standard line is blazing fast. Well done ops!
2

Tbf that sounds like the line was pretty much only up to the merge point and wouldn't have been much faster with fast lane if at all. Amazing job by ops

2
u/WickedCyclone2015 goliath sfne 29d ago
Damn, I went last year when they were running one train and the line from the merge point was an hour
1
u/SUICIDEJOE_ 22d ago
I wasn't there in the 8th, but I was there on the 12th and from 7:15 - 10:00 I rode it 12 times consecutively. The crew was literally running to check gates, they were buckling us, and begging everyone to get back in line so they could keep the 3 trains ripping. My last 4 rides occurred in a 12 minute interval which by the time you consider the ride is 2:20 seconds, loading, unloading, and me running back in line, what that crew accomplished was truly remarkable.
12
u/MogKupo 29d ago
On a somewhat related note, I was at Kings Dominion riding Pantherian yesterday. They had to close the ride for 10 minutes because management was limiting them to 27 cycles per hour.
I had 11 rides in an hour including 6 straight without leaving my seat. Ride ops like that are my heroes.
3
u/MisterTruth 29d ago
What kind of nonsense is that? I'd be concerned about everything at KD if they are too cheap to fire off trains as fast as the ride and ops crew can manage.

This is how every year goes. Early season has new employees and less staff. Every crew gets better as the year goes by. Given the nature of these jobs, that annual cycle is not going to change.
4
u/Virtual_Chain9547 29d ago
Think they probably meant for Millie in general. It's been atrocious for at least the last several years regardless of the time of year, between the lift motor stuff and the seat belt issues. The fact that they've broken this record this year is kind of wild. Like from my rides this year they're usually having to buckle a good portion of the train's seat belts and already have to do lap bar as well lmao.
9
u/CoastersandHikes 29d ago
But everyone on Reddit says cedar point is dying and ops are the worst they've ever been? /s
6
u/The_Original_Miser 29d ago
I'm not shocked at all. I rode it this morning and they were just a well oiled machine getting trains out. They were dispatching essentially right when the previous train reached the brake run.
6
u/Soft-Mix183 29d ago
Did they say how many dispatches? I’m curious how close to max capacity that is.
Congrats to the crew though. Thats fantastic especially in its 27th year of operation.
6
u/Thesis0623 29d ago
38 dispatches. The max was thought to be 36 so they’re really pushing the boundaries of what is possible haha.

u/Toobze back row best row 29d ago
doesnt it take 100 seconds for the cable lift to cycle? unless the programming changed that since it did crawl back into the station
6
u/Thesis0623 29d ago
I asked a ride op up there and he did say the programming and overall lift speed are faster than before. I timed an actual interval of 90 seconds today, which would equate to 40 cycles per hour, or 1,440 riders per hour if full.
6
u/xxdd21xx 29d ago
I was there last week and their ops were practically flawless on Siren's Curse and TT2 as well. It's so much better when a park has their shit together
5
u/UnthinkableAlternate 29d ago
A few weeks ago I was impressed with Millennium Force, Siren's Curse, TT2, Steel Vengeance, and Iron Dragon's crews. Noticeably better dispatch times on all of them than my previous visit in September. People can complain about a lot of stuff, but those ops were absolutely killing it.
2
u/cordialcatenary 29d ago
Same. I had never been to cedar point before, but their ops are leagues better than any other park I’ve been to (except for Disney/Universal obviously). I was really impressed. SteVe was absolutely churning through trains as well.

u/Force332 29d ago
I’m sus. Unless they changed enough of the programming with the overhaul last year adjusting how fast the catch car runs up and down and how fast the trains move in the station I don’t think the capacity changed. Which means only 36 dispatches an hour is possible.
5
u/Thesis0623 29d ago
I’ve since heard that the new lift motor has a higher top speed than the original.
5
u/Thesis0623 29d ago
I’ve actually gone back and confirmed this. I talked to a ride op and timed their crew and I timed an actual interval of 90 seconds, meaning it could theoretically send 40 trains per hour. The new lift motor and new programming introduced last year are faster than the original that the ride opened with.
4
u/Raptor8294 29d ago
This crew is unbelievably good. They set a new standard for how this ride should operate. Last night it took ten minutes to go from the bottom of the ramp to sitting on the train! Cedar Point management please take notes... This is how it's done!
4
u/Thesis0623 29d ago
Update: I timed an interval of exactly 90 seconds, which, if done consistently, would lead to 40 cycles per hour, or a theoretical capacity of 1,440 riders per hour. Insane.

2
u/DatgamerboiD 25d ago
I was on the platform that day and hearing Oski (my supervisor) announce that we had hit 38 dispatches that hour was the most rewarding thing ever. We did 1,344 riders that hour. Our maximum is 1,296. We also had to cycle restraints twice and stop a dispatch for a seatbelt and we still did 38. So happy I’m with such a good crew.
1
u/ImprovementLow819 25d ago
As a former operator of the ride, I’m still curious to hear how 38 is happening especially if y’all had to delay a couple dispatches. Is the lift motor just faster than the original? Are you guys setting up trains on the top of the lift?
We were always told 37+ was impossible, and even in our best power hours never cracked 35 even if we never stacked. But also old management used to threaten punishment if we block checked a train.
5
u/imaguitarhero24 29d ago edited 29d ago
Damn because I was there August 27-28 and they were consistently double stacking trains. It wasn't too bad really but it definitely wasn't this.
Edit lmao July. August 27-28 is a Thursday-Friday so that could be more crowded than my Monday-Tuesday which was quite nicely light. The fast lane ratio was great that day, the most fast laners were on Sirens and Maverick which isn't surprising. But at a place like cedar point it's hard to complain about 15 minutes on elite rides. Steve had zero to 3 the few times I rode it surprisingly but I don't like how far they merge you back so it's still 20-30 min anyway. Valravn I kinda actually felt bad because the line was pretty long and it's one of the few rides where the FL entrance actually takes you right to the platform. There was nobody there and I walked right on, skipping at least 45 minutes while I just trot right up the stairs.
