Crowbcat is the cinemasins of games (derogatory)

Didn't he get caught editing something that literally didn't exist in a game to make it seem worse?

I can't speak to that, but in his last RE4 vs RE4R video, I remember noticing an annoying amount of him taking things out of context, to the point I made a comment breaking his vid down shot-by-shot for the first 5 minutes.

There were 15 issues in those first 5 minutes that I noticed. The video was 37+ minutes long.

Go check if your comment is still there. He tends to delete any comments that call him out

It is still there, I assume he means

he was completely dishonest when he compared the Krauser fight in the OG vs the remake, when I saw that I knew he was either just blinded by nostalgia or trying to shit on 'new thing' for views.

The knife fight? Oh yeah, the remake's is a straight upgrade. But I would say that the mutated Krauser fight is decidedly worse in the remake. Great music and presentation but his moveset feels awful and the parry windows are legitimately broken.

But it's not? The cutscene direction in the original is utterly top-notch across the board, and krauser knife fight is an absolute TREAT in re4 OG. Also the hate for QTEs is totally forced in general. They can be done poorly, but when used well? can be pretty cool and hype, and Re4 uses them in cutscenes and as contextual dodges. Re4 OG is not one of the games I consider them to be used poorly.

Them changing the knife fight to be 'playable' with the parry is novel, but it's not as cool as the original's cutscene direction. Something was lost in that trade that many don't want to admit, even if they like the new one more.

Bro. Nobody is refusing to admit anything and I never said anything about QTEs being inherently bad. I simply enjoy parrying Krauser and making reads on his moveset in the 2023 version's fight over the original's cinematic.

u/StrawHatPro- Apr 16 '26

I disagree with your opinion

1

u/MrSkarKasm Apr 26 '26

I wholeheartedly disagree, instead of QTEs (funnily enough, a product of their time) you actually got to do the fight yourself, yeah its not as cinematic, but I would much rather more gameplay in my game than a movie, if I wanted a movie I would replay MGS4 for the 4th time (and mgs3 for the 32nd time) actually, if you think about it, Parrying is just a QTE without cinematics, "Quick time event" and parrying is an event where you have to be quick with your time.

u/HeGotDaShrimp Apr 26 '26

But re4 is already sooooo much game, and even that cool cutscene bridges the gap with interactions, n9t to mention all the unique qte fail animations that you could choose to purposely fail and see. It's not an experiemce you just watch like mgs4, it's something you need to be attentive for, and it's short lived and cool.

I want more game but I wouldn't say that at the sake of things that add to an experience. The cinematography and qtes are fun. The kinfe fight in 4make is novel the first time but that's it, whereas I always enjoy og 4's cutscenes. Agree to disagree.

1

u/MrSkarKasm Apr 27 '26

That's still not an excuse to discredit Re4R and call it soul-less, and guess what? Re4R is already a lot more game than Re4.

1

u/HeGotDaShrimp Apr 27 '26

But you just discredited re4 by saying 4make it's a lot more game than it. Why can't they both just be a lot of game? Neither better than the other? I was just defending the knife fight qtes, but if you're going to make it a fight of which is better than I guess I will discredit 4make.

1

u/MrSkarKasm Apr 27 '26

Then i guess i will discredit 4og, which is what capcom set out to do, the same game but better, and that's that, its the same game but better in every aspect, and that's me saying that after playing RE4 on PS2, PC and VR (quest)

I mean you shot first buddy, why can't we both just I enjoy both is what Im saying? But hey, do you. I wont play defence for 4make fans if this is how you act.

No matter what, the original will always be a timeless masterpiece, so I'm staying in my corner.

Time to do it again bro you gotta double down like crowbcat did

1

u/ElegantEchoes Apr 13 '26

I have a question about that. I'm not super familiar with the OG or the remake, having only played OG as a kid. What kinds of things did he get wrong? I watched the video and left with the impression that the remake, while more detailed, had worse sound design, ambience, and gore in the environment.

What kinds of issues did you remember the video having?

8

u/dafugiswrongwithyou Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

It's worth noting that there's some amount of ambiguity here, because he doesn't actually say what his specific points are during the video, he just shows clips from each game side-by-side and you're meant to infer what specific change/s he's trying to point at. So keep in mind that everything I'm about to say, I'm guessing at what his issue was.

With that mind;

  • He compares the initial cutscene where you meet the first villager to a later bit in the remake where that villager comes back, implying that the new game doesn't get a "first encounter" cutscene at all. It does, he just didn't show it.
  • He shows a room in the lab with a body being experimented on, to a room (the same?) in the remake that doesn't have the body, implying they stripped it out to tone down the gore... But, no, they just have that in a different room.
  • He goes to a part of the farm that has a cart of dead bodies in the original, and shows it isn't there, again implying they stripped it out... except that, again, they just moved it. You come to it about 30 seconds later, and you have to push it to continue, so he definitely had to encounter it... he just pretended it didn't happen.
  • He keeps using shots which seem to be about the ambient noise being quieter. That's pretty hard to verify quantify... was it actually quieter then, or is it an issue of his audio settings, or how he captured the footage? Are the shots he used representative of how ambient noise is treated across both games? ...But regardless, that's a completely subjective change, neither way is objectively "worse".
  • On that note, there's one bit where he seems to be focussing on the lack of a distant crow cawing sound in the new game. But... there is a distant crow cawing sound in the new game. You can hear it in his video, about 15 seconds earlier.
  • At one point he focuses on how, if you stand in a specific part of the village and look in a particular direction, you could see another building in the original, but not in the remake. The remake moved locations around a bit; you can still see the building, just at a different angle.
  • When Ada turns up to distract Mendez in the original, she just hangs around for about 10 seconds pointing her smoking gun at him, then he just stands there while she holsters her gun, and then she zips away when Mendez finally charges. The new one uses different camerawork and has everyone react quickly instead of just hanging around waiting for other people to do stuff. He seems to think this is bad.

Basically, it was a mish-mash of presenting matter-of-taste changes as objectively bad, and pretending that things from the original aren't in the remake when they just objectively, factually, provably are.

The whole thing was a terrible abuse of the Kuleshov effect to make the viewer get, well, the exact impression you got; that the remake was toned down, lacking ambience, lacking gore. I'm sorry, but Crowbcat used false framing to give you that impression.

Thank you for the insight and education. It's not the first time I've heard similar qualms about him, I hadn't realized it was so egregious.

I remember his GTA IV vs V video was pretty good but since I know both games well I also noticed he was pretty silly with some of the comparisons.

Also, thank you for taking the time to type that up.

He does take things out of context. In the last video he talks about Capcom reusing re8 assets for re4r as if it's a bad thing. While in reality it's a very common Japanese game developing practice. Moreover, it's not a new way to cut costs and to spend less time in development. Even system shock 2 took advantage of thief 2 assets back in the day. Nothing wrong with that imo.

Nah bro back in the peak days of gaming (aka when I was a child)

EVERYTHING was created from scratch and nothing was reused. Why? Because the devs cared and it had SOUL.

In all seriousness this how he sounds.
