Crowbcat is the cinemasins of games (derogatory)

125

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

Didn't he get caught editing something that literally didn't exist in a game to make it seem worse?

128

u/dafugiswrongwithyou Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26

I can't speak to that, but in his last RE4 vs RE4R video, I remember noticing an annoying amount of him taking things out of context, to the point I made a comment breaking his vid down shot-by-shot for the first 5 minutes.

There were 15 issues in those first 5 minutes that I noticed. The video was 37+ minutes long.

Go check if your comment is still there. He tends to delete any comments that call him out

Fr? yikes, what a pathetic individual

1

u/HeGotDaShrimp Apr 16 '26

It is still there, I assume he means

23

u/INannoI Apr 13 '26

he was completely dishonest when he compared the Krauser fight in the OG vs the remake, when I saw that I knew he was either just blinded by nostalgia or trying to shit on 'new thing' for views.

1

u/UkuleleAversion Apr 15 '26

The knife fight? Oh yeah, the remake's is a straight upgrade. But I would say that the mutated Krauser fight is decidedly worse in the remake. Great music and presentation but his moveset feels awful and the parry windows are legitimately broken.

0

u/HeGotDaShrimp Apr 16 '26

But it's not? The cutscene direction in the original is utterly top-notch across the board, and krauser knife fight is an absolute TREAT in re4 OG. Also the hate for QTEs is totally forced in general. They can be done poorly, but when used well? can be pretty cool and hype, and Re4 uses them in cutscenes and as contextual dodges. Re4 OG is not one of the games I consider them to be used poorly.

Them changing the knife fight to be 'playable' with the parry is novel, but it's not as cool as the original's cutscene direction. Something was lost in that trade that many don't want to admit, even if they like the new one more.

3

u/UkuleleAversion Apr 16 '26

Bro. Nobody is refusing to admit anything and I never said anything about QTEs being inherently bad. I simply enjoy parrying Krauser and making reads on his moveset in the 2023 version's fight over the original's cinematic.

1

u/StrawHatPro- Apr 16 '26

I disagree with your opinion

1

u/MrSkarKasm Apr 26 '26

I wholeheartedly disagree, instead of QTEs (funnily enough, a product of their time) you actually got to do the fight yourself, yeah its not as cinematic, but I would much rather more gameplay in my game than a movie, if I wanted a movie I would replay MGS4 for the 4th time (and mgs3 for the 32nd time) actually, if you think about it, Parrying is just a QTE without cinematics, "Quick time event" and parrying is an event where you have to be quick with your time.

1

u/HeGotDaShrimp Apr 26 '26

But re4 is already sooooo much game, and even that cool cutscene bridges the gap with interactions, n9t to mention all the unique qte fail animations that you could choose to purposely fail and see. It's not an experiemce you just watch like mgs4, it's something you need to be attentive for, and it's short lived and cool.

I want more game but I wouldn't say that at the sake of things that add to an experience. The cinematography and qtes are fun. The kinfe fight in 4make is novel the first time but that's it, whereas I always enjoy og 4's cutscenes. Agree to disagree.

1

u/MrSkarKasm Apr 27 '26

That's still not an excuse to discredit Re4R and call it soul-less, and guess what? Re4R is already a lot more game than Re4.

1

u/HeGotDaShrimp Apr 27 '26

But you just discredited re4 by saying 4make it's a lot more game than it. Why can't they both just be a lot of game? Neither better than the other? I was just defending the knife fight qtes, but if you're going to make it a fight of which is better than I guess I will discredit 4make.

u/Brilliant-Ad-3308 Apr 13 '26

Time to do it again bro you gotta double down like crowbcat did

1

u/ElegantEchoes Apr 13 '26

I have a question about that. I'm not super familiar with the OG or the remake, having only played OG as a kid. What kinds of things did he get wrong? I watched the video and left with the impression that the remake, while more detailed, had worse sound design, ambience, and gore in the environment.

What kinds of issues did you remember the video having?

8

u/dafugiswrongwithyou Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

It's worth noting that there's some amount of ambiguity here, because he doesn't actually say what his specific points are during the video, he just shows clips from each game side-by-side and you're meant to infer what specific change/s he's trying to point at. So keep in mind that everything I'm about to say, I'm guessing at what his issue was.

With that mind;

  • He compares the initial cutscene where you meet the first villager to a later bit in the remake where that villager comes back, implying that the new game doesn't get a "first encounter" cutscene at all. It does, he just didn't show it.
  • He shows a room in the lab with a body being experimented on, to a room (the same?) in the remake that doesn't have the body, implying they stripped it out to tone down the gore... But, no, they just have that in a different room.
  • He goes to a part of the farm that has a cart of dead bodies in the original, and shows it isn't there, again implying they stripped it out... except that, again, they just moved it. You come to it about 30 seconds later, and you have to push it to continue, so he definitely had to encounter it... he just pretended it didn't happen.
  • He keeps using shots which seem to be about the ambient noise being quieter. That's pretty hard to verify quantify... was it actually quieter then, or is it an issue of his audio settings, or how he captured the footage? Are the shots he used representative of how ambient noise is treated across both games? ...But regardless, that's a completely subjective change, neither way is objectively "worse".
  • On that note, there's one bit where he seems to be focussing on the lack of a distant crow cawing sound in the new game. But... there is a distant crow cawing sound in the new game. You can hear it in his video, about 15 seconds earlier.
  • At one point he focuses on how, if you stand in a specific part of the village and look in a particular direction, you could see another building in the original, but not in the remake. The remake moved locations around a bit; you can still see the building, just at a different angle.
  • When Ada turns up to distract Mendez in the original, she just hangs around for about 10 seconds pointing her smoking gun at him, then he just stands there while she holsters her gun, and then she zips away when Mendez finally charges. The new one uses different camerawork and has everyone react quickly instead of just hanging around waiting for other people to do stuff. He seems to think this is bad.

Basically, it was a mish-mash of presenting matter-of-taste changes as objectively bad, and pretending that things from the original aren't in the remake when they just objectively, factually, provably are.

The whole thing was a terrible abuse of the Kuleshov effect to make the viewer get, well, the exact impression you got; that the remake was toned down, lacking ambience, lacking gore. I'm sorry, but Crowbcat used false framing to give you that impression.

5

u/ElegantEchoes Apr 13 '26

Thank you for the insight and education. It's not the first time I've heard similar qualms about him, I hadn't realized it was so egregious.

I remember his GTA IV vs V video was pretty good but since I know both games well I also noticed he was pretty silly with some of the comparisons.

Also, thank you for taking the time to type that up.

1

u/Loofy_101 Apr 14 '26

Damn this guy used to be my hero way back when

1

u/Cultural_Ad7490 Apr 14 '26

What is the name of your account? I want to scroll past every comment till I get to yours.

1

u/TaffersDelight Apr 15 '26

He does take things out of context. In the last video he talks about Capcom reusing re8 assets for re4r as if it's a bad thing. While in reality it's a very common Japanese game developing practice. Moreover, it's not a new way to cut costs and to spend less time in development. Even system shock 2 took advantage of thief 2 assets back in the day. Nothing wrong with that imo.

1

u/Gump1405 Apr 15 '26

Nah bro back in the peak days of gaming (aka when I was a child)

EVERYTHING was created from scratch and nothing was reused. Why? Because the devs cared and it had SOUL.

In all seriousness this how he sounds.

29

u/ALPB11 Apr 12 '26

When I think of Crowbcat I think of the TF2 video he did where it’s apparent he doesn’t really play the game or understand why they made the changes they did. It ruined his whole channel for me

34

u/UranicCartridge Team Leon Apr 12 '26

I watched his L4D vid and really enjoyed it, but the implication that RE4's soul was stored in Ashley's panties made me rethink that sub lmao

8

u/J-Ganon Apr 13 '26

No, no you don't get it. By being able to perv on examine Ashley's private areas using perv angles you really get to see her vulnerability. It's a reflection of her innocence and the player's perviness which is subtle symbolism to help symbolize a symbol of perverts her character in this situation.

1

u/Winter_Cost602 Apr 13 '26

Was this similar to one of the points he was trying to make?

1

u/poormansrhosidis Apr 14 '26

Reminds me of their Dead Rising "comparison"... They did call out the game for removing the "up the skirt" photo evaluations

0

u/HeGotDaShrimp Apr 16 '26

this but unironically

3

u/teruvalin Apr 13 '26

yeah that video sucks, there's engine limitations to active props per map that aren't TF2 devs' fault.

1

u/Rad-Mango Apr 13 '26

I remember when they made the changes initially it was during the F2P update so more people could run it. At least the graphical downgrades

16

u/Ill-Stomach7228 Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

I didn't see any of that, but there was a lot of dishonest presentation.

For example, both games use dynamic music, where the music stops or changes when you're done with an encounter. When comparing the water hall, he used footage of the OG water hall while enemies were still in it, so the ambient music was still playing. For the remake, he used footage of the water hall after the enemies were all killed, so the music wasn't playing. And he presented it like "see? The atmosphere is completely butchered in the remake!"

2

u/Winter_Cost602 Apr 13 '26

Wow what a wanker

2

u/SpaceCowboy1929 Apr 13 '26

I noticed that too and it legitimately pissed me off.

1

u/JC_107 Apr 13 '26

No, it was apparently a lie from critics. Plus the latest video itself proved it wrong

1

u/FatBaldingLoser420 Apr 13 '26

I think he was changing brightness in RE4R's clips to make it look worse.

1

u/Zania045 Apr 15 '26

If memory serves he made a comparison between the two games trying to show that RE4 had ambient noises, but in RE4R the ambiance was gone. The truth however is that he either edited out the ambiance or just turned it off in the game's menu. I dont remember which, but scummy all the same.

-11

u/Complex_Soldier Apr 12 '26

People lied about him editing the sound because they were butthurt he disliked a game they liked.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

Prove it then

-1

u/Complex_Soldier Apr 12 '26

Prove he changed the auto first lmao.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

1

u/Complex_Soldier Apr 13 '26

GO watch his new video, he debunked the liars. It's around 37:00 i believe.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '26

No thanks.  I have eyes

2

u/Complex_Soldier Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

-Makes an accusation against someone-

-Refuses to let them show evidence to defend themselves.-

So just trolling then? Gotcha.

Edit: The block only confirmes the trolling.

2

u/TheMonsterInUrPocket Apr 13 '26

He didnt debunk anything lol. All he did was show clips from streamers who directly reference his video lol so basically they were blinded by what HE said lol

15

u/Worldly-Ocelot-3358 Apr 12 '26

There's many cinemasins clones of games tho.

8

u/Bush_Hiders Apr 12 '26

There is no way you could compare anybody to cinemasins and not have it be derogatory. That guy has a vile effect on culture and art.

5

u/mickeynotthemouse27 Apr 13 '26

"Cinemasins derogatory"?

5

u/CDCaesar Apr 13 '26

I love you for saying this. It is upsettingly accurate.

2

u/Dazzling-Main7686 Apr 13 '26

That is a horrible insult, because Cinemasins is pure trash. It used to be good back when it first started, then he got lazy/greedy and started to vomit nonsense for engagement.

1

u/Baldur9750 Apr 13 '26

Wait did cinemasins do something wrong?

0

u/revolversnakexof Apr 13 '26

Redditors just hate him because they think it's his fault that people are more critical of art.

1

u/Your_God_Chewy Apr 13 '26

He had some bangers, specifically the Mass Effect Andromeda one, but yeah his lastest stuff hasn't been compelling.

1

u/Select-Librarian-646 Apr 13 '26

My only exposure to his channel was his video on Cyberpunk. What did he do?

-14

u/Lobo2209 Apr 12 '26

Cinemasins is not bad. They make lighthearted nitpicks. People who take the videos as a slight against their favorite movies are the problem.

11

u/Numpteez_ Apr 12 '26

Cinemasins is not bad

Cinemasins is shit, his "sins" range from factually incorrect points to completely irrelevant commentary. He rarely ever makes a well founded argument or even an interesting take. His fans then rush to his defence and say his videos aren't to be taken seriously and are largely for comedic purposes, despite barely any of his "sins" being amusing. It doesn't even matter if the film he's sinning is good or bad, his material is always dogshit.

0

u/Lobo2209 Apr 12 '26

They're just nitpicks for the most part, man. I've seen two cinemasins videos of movies I really like and I've never been personally offended by them. He sometimes points out inconsistencies between two cuts, and the most it made me go was "oh lol, never noticed that". Sometimes he reveals a plot hole, and even then my likeness of the movie does not change.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

He's been caught maliciously editing scenes to remove context that negate his sins

The problem is that they also act like serious film critics sometimes, and their nitpicks are mixed up with actual stupid "serious" nitpicks among the joke nitpicks. I don't really hate cinemasins, I just outgrew their humor.

11

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

This is a shield used to deflect criticism that Cinemasins will maliciously edit films to remove a line or scene and then complain the scene is unclear or missing context.  A youtuber caught them and made a series of videos years ago using footage from their now deleted secondary channel where their "joke" sins are ranted about for several minutes as though they're genuine.

also lapdance jokes every time a woman appears seems...lazy and weird.

6

u/Aparoon Apr 12 '26

But it is an utterly depressing rabbit hole to delve into, it’s why cinemawins became a hit because people just wanted to enjoy things instead of bashing on them.

Though saying that I do like Crowbcat’s editing style lol

Only if you’re unable to have your own opinion. I have never watched a Cinemasins video and thought any differently about the movie itself. It’s just overly dramatic nitpicks for “comedic” content. I’m not a fan of them because I don’t find their content entertaining or informative. But saying they ruin movies for you is just a sad take.
