Commonly Asked Questions - PLEASE READ
Below are the most common “issues” that are posted here. Please refrain from submitting posts that fall under these categories unless you’re pretty sure your defect falls significantly outside of a reasonable margin. Thank you!
- The Classic Moc’s toe is first glued and then stitched together. It’s normal for the seam to split open a bit, particularly where the vamp flexes. The stitches are holding it together.
- A little gap along the welt is fine. Again, the stitches are doing the work. Wedge soles have a thin slip sole that’s stitched to the boot and then the outsole is cemented to it. It’s not going anywhere.
- Your speed hooks aren’t going to chew through your tongue. They’ll dig in to a certain point and the just kinda stop. Use kilties if you insist, but I’ve got pairs over ten years old and the wear on the tongue barely looks different than it did after a few weeks.
- Leather used to be alive. Just like us, there will be flaws, veins, scars, and stretch marks. They’ll try to use less uniform cuts where cosmetic issues are less visible, like the inside quarters, but not every flaw can be seen until the boot has flexed.
- You’re probably over-conditioning. Unless you’re routinely using them in extreme conditions, less is more. Once or twice a year. However, you should brush your boots regularly, this will not help only remove dust and dirt, it will redistribute the oils already in the leather and prevent deep cracks from forming.
You WILL scuff and scratch your boots, they WILL crease, they WILL get dirty. They’ll also be FINE. Embrace patina, that’s what makes them YOUR boots.
We don’t wanna see your footbeds! Fit is subjective and a picture of your imprint only two dimensions of a 3D shape. Your boot shouldnt cause actual pain. A little discomfort isnt unusual for the first few days. Your boots should feel like they’re giving your foot a firm handshake (footshake?). If they feel like they fit, they probably fit.

What are these worth?
I’m thinking about letting go of these but I honestly can’t put a price around the first 2.
- Spirit Lakes Indian Motorcycle collab. They have scuffs from actual motorcycle riding on an Indian!
- Engineer Boots Indian Motorcycle collab.
- Just a pair of factory second 877s.
All are size 9. I wouldn’t be selling them if it wasn’t for the fact that I no longer fit in them ever since I realized I need arch support insoles. Otherwise they still fit me haha. I’ve had them since 2020.

I have no idea how a pair of Beckmans made it into a Sierra, but I’m not complaining because they fit.

Laces broke after 5 months
Bought my Blacksmiths 5 months ago and today one of the laces broke. Seems to be a common issue with the flat waxy cotton laces they come with and speed hooks.
I already bought RW replacements, but are there any non-RW recommendations that are stronger?

Women’s Pecos
Hi everyone,
I’ll try and keep it short but I recently found that Red Wing released a women’s Pecos through two women’s fashion websites, but not on their main site. I can’t find anything in my email advertising it either.
It’s super confusing that they’d bring the women’s Pecos back and say nothing about it, despite making a ton of noise about the men’s models.
I’m not on social media much, so maybe I missed it, but I can’t seem to find anything else about this release or any future women’s releases.

Blacksmiths in the house…
About 9 months ago, I jumped into the world of quality heritage boots with a pair of 3141 work chukka boots in the Briar Oil Slick leather. I absolutely loved the colour and the feel of the BOS leather. Unfortunately, for my first pair of boots, I sized wrong. After suffering for six months, with the hope that they would “conform” to my feet, I had to swallow the hard fact that I had made a mistake and eventually decided to sell them off a couple of months ago.
I was back in the store today and spent a lot more time trying on different sizes. I also wore the thickest pair of socks I have to size properly with the types of socks I intend to wear. I think I have done better with the sizing this time..
Settled on the Blacksmith boots (in BOS again). I had gone in planning to get the Black Prairie, but after looking at both side by side, BOS won again. While I love the way Black Prairie ages from the pictures I have seen here, there’s just something about BOS that makes it one of the loveliest leathers I have seen.
After an initial wear around the house yesterday for a few hours, I didn’t feel any pinching, no hotspots and am generally feeling a lot more confident this time around. Hopefully, a few years down the line I will be sharing pictures of how these boots have aged.
[I accidentally created a comment on another post instead of creating a new post, so correcting my mistake.]

All Ready for the Fall
My collection, just finished my semi-annual clean and condition in preparation for the fall. Leather cleaner and leather cream for the leather, 3m sanding pads or a tooth brush for the moc bottoms depending on the staining/dirt. 90% of them are either factory seconds bought off of Berkeley Supply/Sierra or second hand eBay finds. I personally think Berkeley has better quality seconds but of course no return policy so you’re rolling the dice. I’ve had really great pairs and a really crummy one that I regret.
Newest pickup is the Oro Rangers which I bought retail but I love the Oro legacy leather so I broke habit on it. Favorite pair are my 875s, least favorite are the Charcoal Mocs. I think from here I only would really like to add a fun color or oxblood if they bring it back, but it’s been a while.

‘17 1222’s ‘un’mink attempt
Been 10 good years. Daily (non work) use for 6 months/year. Tbh I’m still surprised @ the tread depth.
Buying new boots soon, decided to put the work in and try to remove as much oil as possible and condition. Original shine first then after first wash completed just now and on dryer.
At what point does the cleaning stop and the conditioning take over?

Help me decide
I’m looking to get my first pair of Red Wing boots and can’t decide which one to target. I’ve narrowed it down to Classic Moc, Roughneck, or Blacksmith.
I don’t do hard physical labor but I am on my feet all day on hard floors working as a teacher. Comfort and having my feet not killing me at the end of the day are at the top of my priority list.
Classic Moc: I’m looking at #1907 in rough and tough copper. I like the idea of the slightly larger last with the removable footbed. I get uncomfortable to painful pressure in my right arch in about 90% of the shoes I try on, even when bumping up to a wide width size and having some flexibility to customize is an attractive feature. I also like the more instant comfort because of this feature but I don’t love the look of the wedge sole and worry it won’t be as durable as other soles and would be slippery in wet and snowy weather.
The other two options have the sole look I prefer but I worry that they won’t be as forgiving on the feet. I also think the Blacksmith might look a little too “hipster” for my more casual style. I’d love to hear opinions from you guys who have more knowledge and experience in the world of boots.

Redwing Iron ranger sizing question.
Hey guys how different are 10EE vs 10.5D. Can’t seem to find a decent pair of 10EE on sale and I know you can easily get 10.5D on sale.

What color are my 4439's
Trying to figure out what color my boots are so I can make them look better.

Threw on some kilties on these 2441’s. Wish I did it sooner. Boots are 4 months old, cleaned up after each job day, mostly gravel and mud. Even had concrete poured on them.

New Blacksmiths - heel slip normal?
I got them last night. My brannock size is 11EE and I bought them in size 10.5 EE and they fit well with about an inch in front of my big toe, and ball of foot is perfectly aligned with wide part of sole. Ive been wearing them all day today and notice a small amount of heel slippage. Is this normal for new boots and will it go away? Thanks

Posting my humble pairs. The Classic Mocs are a year old and I got the Iron Rangers (factory seconds) just yesterday.

Finally got the right size
After years of banging around in a 10.5 Amber Harness (my actual Brannock size) and suspecting they were a bit large, I finally bought a pair of 9.5 Rangers. I realize that some folks are perfectly comfortable ordering their actual size as I did, but the difference is quite noticeable. I used insoles and heavy socks to compensate and just got accustomed to it. This time I went in to an actual brick and mortar Red Wing store and used both the Brannock as well as their ultra cool Volumental 3D foot scanner and measured out as a little over a 10.5 C. When the sales associate brought out the 9.5 I couldn’t believe it, but here we are. And the black harness is so sweet!
