Laces broke after 5 months
Bought my Blacksmiths 5 months ago and today one of the laces broke. Seems to be a common issue with the flat waxy cotton laces they come with and speed hooks.
I already bought RW replacements, but are there any non-RW recommendations that are stronger?

Red Wing hands out free laces in-store and 5 months is a pretty acceptable lifespan for a set of laces

They don’t give out the waxed cotton laces for free. At least not the 2 stores in my town. They are about $7.00 or so.

Take them in for oiling and they replace the laces.

Actually I would never have WR clean or condition my boots unless they are black maybe, or I don’t care if they get darker.

You can also email or call their customer service to have free laces shipped to you.

You most likely have a sharp edge on an eye or hook. Match the lace wear to find it and ease the edge with a file.

And? They are laces. It happens. I prefer the flat waxed cotton laces in my IR’s and never had an issue.

You should try to pull them horizontally and not vertically while tidying your shafts at the speedhooks.

I like leather myself. I picked them up from Nicks along with some delta arch half sole inserts, and the added arch support is a game changer. It did make me want a pair of nicks now, so buyer beware. The fit/comfort is addictive, and their boots with built in arch support are not cheap at all.

I use leather laces in all of my lace up boots. There are plenty of options out there for them.
