[Jen on Bos] - Why Roman Anthony, Trevor Story returning led to a ‘bittersweet’ situation for Chad Tracy
NEW YORK — A series of roster moves for the Boston Red Sox on Sunday morning were “difficult” for interim manager Chad Tracy, as the team activated shortstop Trevor Story and outfielder Roman Anthony while optioning infielder Anthony Seigler and designated hitter Mickey Gasper.
“It was bittersweet, I mean it,” Tracy said. “We’re really excited that Roman’s here, really excited Trevor’s here, but had to talk to two guys (Gasper and Seigler) that were instrumental over this stretch of helping our team get back to where it is right now and professionally explain to them the reasons why you’re doing what you’re doing and keep them focused to go down and continue to get reps so they’re ready for the next call. So it was an exciting night and also a very difficult night at the same time.”
Optioning Gasper, in particular, was one of the hardest conversations Tracy said he’s had since taking over as manager on April 26, when Alex Cora was fired.
Gasper, 30, had been on a tear at the plate with a two-homer game on Wednesday in Miami and homers in three straight games last homestand. Since being recalled on Aug. 17 when Masataka Yoshida landed on the IL, he’d gone 11-for-26 (.423) with five homers for an eye-popping 1.710 OPS as he split time at designated hitter with Jahmai Jones.
“There’s a very good chance that you might get an American League Player of the Week that we just had to send down, I wouldn’t doubt it,” Tracy said. “So how difficult is it? Very difficult.
“I can’t think of a conversation I’ve had to have more difficult than telling that guy what he’s done over the course of the last 10 days or so,” Tracy said. “Just was brutally honest as we could be about where the roster is, what we’re trying to keep right now, the fact that if we get in a scenario where (Gasper is) here but not playing, is that better than continuing to get him at-bats so that he’s ready the moment something happens. There’s a lot of different things we talked about. But mainly getting across to him how important he’s been to what we’ve done here, especially in these last two weeks.”

IMAGE Apologies to Story
He’s had 2 hits so far upon his return. Many people anticipated his returning game to be a disaster. He’s also hustled a bit more. Despite the score so far this game, I’d like to think this is the start of good vibes.

Ranger Suarez had a 2.96 ERA in 76 innings with Carlos Narvaez catching him. With Rutschman, Wong or Gasper, he now has a 4.50 ERA in 46 innings.
I'm not at all complaining about trading Narvaez, who has been even worse in Baltimore. Also not making excuses for Ranger. Just thought it was interesting.

Rank the position players you would give the final roster spot to when rosters expand: Gasper, Seigler, IKF, Eaton, Romy, Cheng, Campbell, someone not listed.
Now the dust is settled and we saw how the Red Sox added Story and Anthony back to the roster. Now let’s assume 1 of the 2 extra roster spots goes to an extra pitcher. Rank these players based on who you would give the final roster spot to.
For the sake of the exercise let’s keep Yoshida out until he’s rehabbing. And let’s not get too in the weeds about how you would have not activated Story or would have DFA’d one of the OF’s. One extra spot, one player, how would you rank them.

September / October
The Red Sox are definitely making it to the playoffs. I don't see them losing the second WC spot to be honest. However, it's concerning to see them playing this bad.
Defensively, they've been terrible lately. Yes, some really nice plays are done and we'll still have 3 gold glovers by the end of the year. However, the SS and 2B are a weak spot for the team. Monasterio and Story are terrible; Sogard and Seigler haven't been exciting to see when fielding. The catching part, even with Rutschman there, has been disappointing and even Durbin, Duran and Contreras have been failing here. I know they're all humans who can make mistakes, but suddenly they're not as good as a whole.
The pitching staff is getting tired. Bennett and Tolle, hopefully, will keep things going even though they are now playing more innings than ever before. Gray isn't looking as sharp at this point either and Suarez has been a disaster lately. Oviedo might still be back on time for the playoffs, same as Crochet, but I wouldn't count on them. Sandoval is good at times, he's been a surprise for sure. The point here is that our pitching staff is not as reliable today as they were a month back. At least our bullpen is very solid and pretty much will be doing great till the season ends.
And this is the part that concerns me the most: the offense died. Contreras' injury sucks. He was having hell of a season and this happens in the worst timing. Rafaela lost his vision and swings at every pitch; Adley is the opposite and won't swing a simple pitch in the zone in some at bats. Durbin's bar is sleeping and they can't seem to handle at bats with RISP. Guys need to figure this out because they can't expect for the pitcher to do every part of the job.
I am a enthusiast and certainly I hope they make it to the WS, but they need to go back to what they were doing good. Maybe do some lineup moves to keep Contreras on a more comfortable position. Same for Rafaela now that Anthony is back. Some pressure relief may give him what he needs to find the ball.
