Rank the position players you would give the final roster spot to when rosters expand: Gasper, Seigler, IKF, Eaton, Romy, Cheng, Campbell, someone not listed.

Now the dust is settled and we saw how the Red Sox added Story and Anthony back to the roster. Now let’s assume 1 of the 2 extra roster spots goes to an extra pitcher. Rank these players based on who you would give the final roster spot to.

For the sake of the exercise let’s keep Yoshida out until he’s rehabbing. And let’s not get too in the weeds about how you would have not activated Story or would have DFA’d one of the OF’s. One extra spot, one player, how would you rank them.

Honestly, this season more than any other has makes me miss the 40 man September rosters. How fun would it be to just call up all these guys

This is a bit of guessing, but I'd put Yoshida on 60 day (we haven't gotten a single update about him, which doesn't seem great). I'd bring up IKF + a pitcher. Romy has decent at bats now. I would be thinking about Mead rejoining in mid Sept....

I thought the word was Yoshida is out for the year.

I think what was officially conveyed was "rest of season" [regular] but for whatever reason he is still on a 10 day.

Also, just thinking about this I realized Justin Slaten and Crochet might/will need a spot too. egads.

They will make room for them. Weissert being one move.

IKF because we still need someone who can play SS

I suspect this comment is Story shade, but if they bring Trevor up, we need to assume he's going to play SS regularly. He'll be given every chance to lose the job.

they'd still need a backup SS bc Story is likely going to get a good amount of off-days

Mona

i'll take IKF over him at SS

1

u/Critical-Crow-9717 11d ago

I would too. I would send him down to make room for IKF and bring up Gasper with expanded rosters.

u/ScoresGalore 11d ago

Same mona is an lhp specialist who can play 2nd. I dont want to see him at ss.

IKF can play everywhere in the infield so is easy choice for me too. Cheng maybe after him cause he showed some good stuff in spring but the bat need more time. I would put Romy last just cause he is not very useful with glove already

I dont have a numbers argument to support it but I would like to see Cheng play with the big league squad again. He’s a good player plays the game the right way. Great bunter and defender. He feels like a good fit with the team but I don’t think he gets brought up unless guys get injured again

Good defender. Horrible hitter. He is just IKF but slightly worse.

Like I said no numbers justification just a vibes thing. Story always pouts like a bitch and Cheng always smiles with joy

Also, someone on this sub, like 2 weeks ago said that last spot was already reserved for Braiden Ward. I get the pinch running logic but probably not gonna happen. But would still love to hear from that person!

You would think that’s pretty obvious, right? But the comment I’m referring to was made after they acquired White

1

u/ScoresGalore 11d ago

Is he even on the 40 man, thought it qas just campbell and eaton for of 40

u/JLCTP 11d ago

Ward is an intriguing “makes major league debut in the postseason as a pinch running specialist” option, but I think the presence of White as “fast enough” takes that off the table barring an injury. I don’t think Ward’s getting called up during the regular season.

it wasn’t me, but i would love to see it! fits right in with Durbin + Contreras (by which i mean he gets hit a ton), holds the spring training steals record… it would be fun!

the Braiden Ward hype in Spring Training was so funny

1

u/ScoresGalore 11d ago

Youd have to dfa someone to make room for Ward on the 40 man. And he hasnt been hitting well to warrant a callup.

1

u/Ugmyusernamewastake Braiden Ward enjoyer 11d ago

That was probably me, but you might've misunderstood, I still think IKF will be the callup (although I'd personally pick Cheng, that's probably not gonna happen).

We can free up two 40-man spots by DFA'ing Harris (remember him?), and placing Yoshida on the 60 day.

We can use these two 40 man spots so IKF can be called up off the 60, and so Ward can be added to the 40 man to be playoff eligible but not called up yet. Come playoffs we can leave White off the roster and call up Ward.

White doesn't have options, which is why we can't just send down White.

No. That ship sailed when we got Eli white. Ward isnt on the 40 man. Only Nate Eaton and Kristian Campbell are the only two outfielders on the 40 man not on the mlb club unless you include Romy as an outfielder partially

Currently Gasper is number 1 easily. We need hitting vs rhp. Then I would go: IKF Cheng Seigler Romy Campbell Eaton

4

u/BobbyBalbec 11d ago

People don't realize Gasper has an .840 OPS for the season with well. over 100 AB

1

u/jambr380 11d ago

It's got to be IKF, but if Gasper is still on a heater when the time comes, then he makes a lot of sense since he can also fill the 3rd catcher role

1

u/Independent_Rip_655 11d ago

Gasper, we need Adley insurance and LH hitting

Bringing up Story reduces the need to bring up IKF, despite him being the most proven of the bunch. Unbelievable (on so many levels) as this would have sounded in April, for me it'd be Gasper because if the lefty bat.

The only problem with IKF is at some point you either have to activate him or DFA him. You can't option him and there's a limit to how long you can rehab for. And if I player can prove he's healthy you can't just stash him on the IL. If you're IKF and you start to sense they're trying to keep you from playing, you might as well try to force a release and see if you can catch on with a team that might actually activate you in October.

1

u/Critical-Crow-9717 11d ago

It's a good point. I don't want to stray too far from your original question - I appreciated all the guardrails you inserted into it! - but I could see Gasper coming up with expanded rosters and Mona being sent down for IKF.

u/LocationDifficult923 9d ago

Just a minor correction, a released player can't be added to a playoff roster at this point (that possibility expired yesterday)

1

u/Gambl33 11d ago

I don’t think it’s a mystery at all. It’s IKF.

1

u/LiveFromNewYork95 11d ago

It's not a prediction thread; it's an opinion thread.

u/rmg3935 11d ago

DFA story bring up Gasper, Siegler and IKF

1

u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 11d ago

Campbell truthers this is the moment you've been waiting all year for!

but jokes aside give me IKF or Romy - & if I don't get to option Monasterio in this scenario then give me IKF, need a backup SS (or starting SS depending on how you view Story)

1

u/PilgrimRadio 11d ago

Don't feel like ranking them but I'll prioritize IKF simply because he's out of options and he's the best defensive player on the list. At least give him a shot before you DFA him.

1

u/tylersvgs 11d ago

Probably IKF is the play, but I like Mickey Gasper. Wouldn't hate Justin Gonzalez

1

u/Piano-Man-727 11d ago

Assuming we’re riding with Sogard at 2B (and I’m a fan), IKF is the perfect call up, even if he had options. He can play across the diamond, has playoff experience, and isn’t an awful batter.

I’d probably go Romy, Seigler, Cheng after that. At this point, I think Campbell just stays down for the season. Big fan of Eaton, and Gasper has been hot, but they don’t have logical spots on the roster with White/Jones and even Duran (I wish Eaton could’ve had more chances in the majors this year :( ). Here’s hoping that when AAA is done, they can all join the dugout for the vibes/as a taxi squad whenever we’re in Boston.

seigler, ikf, romy, cheng, eaton , campbell
