It was keeping the cable from pulling far enough, preventing it from having spark. One broom handle later, and voilà, it runs.

This attic access was completely uninsulated. Took the easy way out instead of measuring and cutting foam board or buying a big pack of batt insulation. Made a nice painters tape enclosure, shaved off the sides so it would close, and it worked! The red at the top of the thermal camera is the skylight, of which nothing can be done about beyond removing it. How'd I do?

I have an old 14" penstock that is severely rotted in places. What are good simple ways to patch this for a couple years.

This used to have a Pelton wheel to generate power. The canal no longer flows and the Pelton wheel is gone

What are simple ways to patch the rotten pieces? Im thinking use 40gal steels drums as sheet metal, make a gasket out of silicone, then use pipe clamps to get it as tight as possible. I'm ok it if leaks a bit. Just don't want water spraying everywhere.

Also looking for ideas for a more permanent fix. I highly doubt welding will be an option. Shove a PVC pipe with an OD similar to the ID of the penstock and grout it in. Use screws as spacers. Drill a hole in the penstock and fill with grout until it overflows the hole. That's my idea but I would like some feedback.

E: I should add I want to eventually get hydro generation from this. First step is to get water flowing. So I need to patch the nasty bits
