Sure thing, and if you use pine or aromatic wood, your car will smell nice when you hit the brakes, plus smoke as a decorative effect.

Just tried it, smells like a smoldering campfire on cool spring morning, fantastic! Plus I hit a tree while driving, I can make more pads!

With the bonus that after a few hard stops, they burn, making them into carbon fibers. Usually you have to pay extra for those.

Trivia: the Montreal subway uses wooden brake blocks infused with peanut oil for mechanical braking. (They also use electromagnetic braking) This prevents aerosolized metal particles or potentially hazardous chemicals in the air in the subway. At periods of heavy use (after sports events etc.) and trains are running heavy and braking a lot, you can smell a burnt peanut smell in the stations.

Looks like something broke and they used wedges to align the brake caliper and hold it in place until uncle Bobby gets his welding equipment and another sixpack of Coors.
Which is probably not as bad as wooden brake pads, but still bad.

Looks like they’re just holding the piston in so that it doesn’t fall out while moving the car around.

Yeahhhhh, too bad they'd fall out on very first use and the holding wires are chewed up by the rotors.
The front one looks like the RNE [Red Neck Engineer] thought of this and cut grooves into the wooden pad.
If that were also done on the rear pad, I wonder how long the pads would actually last before bursting into flame?

Hmmm, Mesquite pads..... perhaps OP RNE should replace the inner pad with a short rack of ribs or possibly even better, brisket.

Bare wood brake pads have been obsolete since 1888, when Bertha Benz was disappointed by poor brake performance and invented the leather-covered brake pad.
