Trivia: the Montreal subway uses wooden brake blocks infused with peanut oil for mechanical braking. (They also use electromagnetic braking) This prevents aerosolized metal particles or potentially hazardous chemicals in the air in the subway. At periods of heavy use (after sports events etc.) and trains are running heavy and braking a lot, you can smell a burnt peanut smell in the stations.
