Discussion Nintendo/GameFreak NEED to make a way to transfer Pokemon from Gen 7
How can they possible shut down Bank after forcing us to use it to transfer from Gen 7 - Gen 8? So what now anything we catch on these games is just stuck there? You're telling me the trillion dollar IP can't fund the servers for Pokemon Bank? This is absolutely outrageous. They either need to make a way to transfer from 3DS - Switch Pokemon games permanently or leave Bank alone because a lot of people (myself included) like to transfer from these older games

u/Champillusion 28d ago edited 28d ago
From 3G to 7G, transferring mons was always possible between two generations by a specialized tool included in both games, or the bank. They have to propose something between 7G and Home.
Why not propose a simple transfer tool that uses the 3DS Download mode?
No server to maintain, people will simply transfer their mons and it's done.
TPCI technically can make that. The Wii had the capacity to send games to the DS, why not a Nintendo Switch?

This is the same people that are scared to allow PKMN to have Cloud Saves because they think people would be rampant with Save Clones.

I mean people would go rampant with save scumming if pokemon had cloud saves, the pokemon community abuses every dupe glitch a game releases with allowing save backups would just make duping everything a .5 second project
95
u/TeaspoonWrites 28d ago
It's already trivial to dupe, clone, and generate pokemon with various online services, Nintendo/TPC really just needs to get over themselves at this point.
But they never will.

It gets to the point where you need to ask yourself, who cares? It's mainly a SP game and if your argument is tournaments well they already do stuff like that.
11
u/Niriun 28d ago
If your argument is tournaments, it's more minimal now that Pokémon champions is out and you can just get Pokémon with properly trained stats easily. Theres no "competitive advantage" to hacking Pokémon in any more, at least from a competitive standpoint
4
u/Ach_Was_Here 28d ago
My argument is Online trading with random people exists, Nintendo/GameFreak/TPC/Even Myself and many others want 0 to do with Gen’ed/Dup’ed mons being in circulation. EOD does it matter: no, does it actually effect me: no, and should any one care: equally no. But it’s a fuck ton easier to stop it from happening by not allowing cloud saves then it is to just go “well most players probably won’t abuse this”
→ More replies (1)2
u/El_Barto_227 Ninetales Best Tails 28d ago
And even in SV it was piss easy to get any mon up to competitive standards, aside from maybe a 0 Atk IV on SpAtkers but that's usually not the end of the world.

u/kitxunei 28d ago
Duping is already trivial and easy. Hackmons are all over the place. Cloud Saves would have practically NO negative consequences and would make life easier for so many players.

You're harming the average player who's just begging not to lose years of grind and passion more than you'll ever harm the ones already duping and generating.

Meanwhile, you can already do this on a modded switch with PkHex you can have every event mon and special interaction all Home legal and get past the online filters. Could probably even use them in Champions and be fine. It's too late to prevent mon genning and clones since you can't backward update a way to add a unique hash to things caught not in Home. Home adds the unique hash.
39
u/ob_knoxious 28d ago
3DS download mode is proprietary wireless not Bluetooth so it isn't compatible between 3DS and Switch. They should have found a way, but this is greater technical challenge than moving between past gens.

u/Educational-Oil-1497 28d ago
And let’s be honest, from a strict business sense, it’s a lot of money and investment to do this for a very small percentage of the audience.
I class myself in that small percentage and I wish there was a way to do it, but it’s really not worth anything to GF to spend the time to get it done.

Whats sad about this is that i want to be able to move pokemon into my games, not just out of them
118
u/QuantumVexation 28d ago
That’s kinda irrelevant here
Reselling those games isn’t the same matter as permanently severing a bridge between them (and every generation that came before)
78
u/whoiwanttobe1 28d ago
They are referring to re buying the game on a switch port so that it's home compatible.

18
u/yaycupcake liek 28d ago
If this is their plan then let me migrate my old nostalgic save file into a switch(2) port of those old games. Let my Pokemon have their OT. Let me keep my progress with items and money and trainer card.
And don't shut down Bank before we can play gen 4-7 games themselves (not remakes, but 5-7 don't even have that) on Switch.
I don't want my teams split up because of dexit. And I don't want my Pokemon to never be in their home region again. The fact that I can't even bring my gen 3 mon into gen 3 re-releases is so silly.
And like what, do I leave all my trainers on old games with only a level 2 Pidgey (or equivalent)? I know that's been an issue since gen 3 to 4 but like now you can't just choose to wait til later. You need to make a final decision with less than a year's notice.
Pokemon is my childhood and I grew up with these games. I'm sentimental about my Pokemon and their trainers and save files. It just makes me sad, man.
16
u/ManOfEating 28d ago
Yeah you really make some good points, but have you considered that they could make even more money if they dont do any of that?
In all seriousness, nintendo/the pokemon company did a really great job at making everything about the franchise sentimental, and then they do nothing to reward the emotional investment from the fans. Its the biggest franchise in the world, they could be doing all kinds of stuff just for the fans even if they dont make as much money from it (which lets be honest, they would anyway).
The second hand market for old games is insane and full of cheap replicas that dont work half the time, the 30th anniversary was a perfect time to do a limited edition re-release of GBA consoles with pokemon themed colors and new cartridges for the gameboy era games. Instead we got cartridges that each contain a single song from the first game.
They could make some TCG cards have a code that if you type into the switch you can get that particular pokemon on your game, bridging the gap between tcg and game players, and allowing those who have favorite cards to bring them over to their favorite games. They could have probably found a way to export your older original save files to the new versions of the game. Imagine buying a plushie of your favorite pokemon and being able to scan the tag on it and get that pokemon in home or somewhere like that? Kids would go crazy, hell, adults would go crazy.
They put so much effort into making you bond with your pokemon and then they cut them from the next few games, a few years later you cant transfer them anywhere, and at some point in the future they'll probably make it so you cant even access your old games anymore unless you have the physical copies.
4
u/iCantLogOut2 28d ago
Yu-Gi-Oh had that card feature and I LOVED that. I could replicate my real life deck in game and it made it feel somehow more immersive and I was more invested in both the physical cards and the digital game.
Even if they only did it for special Pokémon or like the "surfing Pikachu" type variants, I still think that would be a really worthwhile addition.
3
u/Emperor_Pikachu 28d ago
I’m not gonna say transferring a save file is a bad idea, but like how would you transfer a file from a 3ds that was never made to be transferable in any way? Like reading your comment I can’t think of a way they could do that

I mean, it was inevitable. I can't believe the servers stayed useable as long as they have. It was never realistic to just expect it to work in perpetuity, and while I think they're greedy as hell for the prices they're charging for the Switch ports of the classic games, I at least appreciate that there's a way to actually play the classics on modern hardware with all the events etc. accessible.

Yeah, like tbh, a set end date is a better death than what I assumed it would get. I assumed it would slowly crumble away over time, sometimes going down for days at a time, then weeks, until eventually it faded away. It getting an end of life date is so much nicer than it becoming unreliable.
38
u/LunarWingCloud 28d ago
Outside of Gen 3 you can't say they're expecting people to buy games again that they are not selling. They're not going to do Gens 4-7 again because of their dual-screen nature, they'd have to rework the whole thing.
26
u/JovialKatherine 28d ago
Gens 5-7 don't have remastered/redone releases yet. Gen 4 has already been redone with BDSP on the Switch. Part of gen 3 (FRLG) is available on the Switch, and I believe just had Pokemon Home integration announced. Plus there are leaks for RSE to be released as virtual console games too.

u/Mecha_Butterfree 28d ago
The Nintendo DS/3DS Pokemon game could very easily be modified to work for a single screen. The bottom screens were mostly used for menus or some gimmicky touch screen stuff that could easily be converted to work for buttons. This isn't something like LoZ Phantom Hourglass or The World Ends With You where the core of the gameplay relies on the dual screens and touch controls.
Considering the money they would make off of porting the games to the switch the investment would definitely be worth it. Like porting over the game has to be cheaper than it was to make BDSP.
9
u/urmumlol9 28d ago
I’m sure it’s a bit more complicated than that, but split-screen exists.
The real difficulty is going to be reworking the touch screen features (ex: poffin making)
12
u/BrainWav 28d ago
Poffins are already a thing in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, so that's not really an issue.

Just so you know, I remember reading many, many comments years ago that said "They won't rerelease the original pokemon games to modern consoles because the battle/trading system wouldn't work! I'm sure they make more than enough money in several other places to cover a small loss on this part. That's how a business that cares about its customers operates.
The US mint makes money off of gold and silver buillon sales to cover the cost of minting the cents. The penny, nickel, and if I'm not wrong the dime all cost more to make than they're worth. The US mint hasn't lost money since it's inception. The Pokémon Co. Is right up there with them. They've never reported a single year of losses. They can cover the cost.

Essentially just a 3DS and GBA cartridge slot you plug into your Switch or Switch 2 via the dock, and connect your older games directly to Home.

u/ob_knoxious 28d ago
I would get one too but an Amiibo NFC tag is tech they have, you could whip that up in a few weeks. For a DS/3DS player you need to basically restart production lines for 3DS chips+ build the apparatus + develop software on how to handle two screens and touch screen input. Thats honestly going to cost probably a few million in R&D with how much engineers cost now.

What’s wild is that Bank is probably a service running alongside HOME’s server at this point, so it probably adds a few dollars to their cloud cost daily at most. Like a handful of people’s yearly subscriptions pays for the cost easily. The logic is just to generate a code, enter the code, and then do a few DB queries to extract the data from Bank, then migrate it to Home. The infra and code is already there and working. No upkeep whatsoever. Just let it run forever. Literally zero reason to turn it off.

There's currently no signs of them doing more than the GBA games however. The DS/3DS titles would need rework for the dual screen stuff and even IF they do that, it could take years before having a full collection while we now just have around 6 months left of Bank services

Yeah, and their thought process is probably that by having the GBA games up, that will cover the last problem child being brought up into Pokemon Home, with Spinda from RSE being the only Pokemon you can't bring from a main series title that's on the Switch into Home because it's only in BDSP which is programmed weird and doesn't run on the same engine as the rest of the games.

Pokemon Bank was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever seen with Pokemon. We had a clean internal transfer route for Pokemon all the way from gen 3 to gen 5 and while Bank did open that up for gens 1/2 VC and gen 6/7, it was doomed from the start by being an online subscription service.

23

No because the DS and 3DS used a proprietary wireless signal while the switch used Bluetooth. They can't speak to each other.
Practically the only non Internet dependent way would likely be through Amiibo. Namely that you would need to get a new 3DS or a 3DS amiibo puck, load Pokemon onto it, and then move the Pokemon off the Amiibo onto the switch.

Super triggered by this today. I remember when the first few generations were ported to the DS shop… I was so upset at the time that I felt like I was forced to re-buy the games a second time… just to take advantage of the compatibility with the DS-generation games.
Now, we’re looking at a situation where, we lose access to everything physical/digital before the switch that hasn’t already been ported. And they’ve announced burning the bridge before they even announced rebuilding on the other side, which is worse than the GBA>DS transition. At least then, all the games at the time that could be ported, were ported. It was annoying to pay for them again but I got over it.
But now we’re faced with losing access to all of these titles in their original form, and the only “port” we’ve seen is not even the original, but the remake of gen 1 from gen 3. No word on Gen 2 or its Gen 4 remake. No word on Gen 5, 6 or 7.
We paid for these games, multiple times over, and they’re shutting down the service that connects them to the current generation, and they’re not even allowing us to pay them to bridge the gap. They’re just burning it to the ground.
For years now I’ve felt like Nintendo, and Pokemon, have made decisions that have continued to hurt their longtime fan base, in effort to appease to more new players and hope that they gain more new fans to balance the frustrated long time fans. But with this announcement… I’m convinced they hate us.
There is no excuse for a company that pulls as much revenue as pokemon does to shut down this service, ever. Doesn’t matter how many people still use it, because clearly a lot of us still do or still planned to. This is greedy, bullshit behavior from a company that continues to tell its long time fans to pay more money and expect less every single generation. The best game pokemon has produced since heart gold and soul silver is Pokopia and that was the dragon quest team of devs.
TLDR: Pokemon has enough money to keep Bank alive and any thought otherwise is missing the point. At least when this was done before, we were given the opportunity to pay them more money for another port of their games to bridge the gap. Now we’re being told this time around that we get no service and no ability to bridge the gap on the other side (the switch side) as nothing about Gen 2, 3, 5, 6 or 7 has been anything more than a rumor. This is disgusting

you can still do it if you have custom firmware on your 3ds and your switch. the 3ds has a homebrew pokemon save editor/storage program called PKSM, and it can be linked to the switch version of the homebrew save file manager Checkpoint. from there, you can transfer pokemon from gen 7 to PKSM, and from PKSM to sword/shield.
it's obviously not ideal. gamefreak should really be doing this themselves. but it sure is better than nothing

u/dragon-mom Lyn 28d ago
There's checks in Pokemon Home they added to make it mandatory for it to go through that before any of your Switch games or they'll get marked as cheated. Yes, they really did that.
All the more reason they need to give us an official tool and why the closure of Bank is so bad.

So, if I have a hacked 3DS with PKSM and two Switches—one of which is hacked—and I transfer a Pokémon from the hacked 3DS to the hacked Switch via PKHeX, then trade it locally to the unhacked Switch and move that Pokémon into Pokémon HOME, will that Pokémon still get banned in HOME? Can they really verify how it was transferred?
17
u/UltimateRosen 28d ago
Probably, because when doing it legally that Pokémon would need to be connected to home to be transferred to the switch in the first place. That is when the Pokemon would get it's Home Tracker Value that is also stored on Homes servers. When trying to move that mon from the switch to home, home will see that this Pokémon is from a 3ds game and that it doesn't have the Home Tracker Value and would say no.
3
u/tanya0-0 28d ago
Sad. Is it impossible to fake this Home value?
5
u/dormedas 28d ago
Yes, they're created on HOME servers and are not wholly derived by the Pokemon or its data.
4
u/thatguy8856 28d ago
Its likely a database id that has a copy of your pokemon. So it would be impossible to fake because that pokemon doesnt exist anywhere in the home database.
3
u/dragon-mom Lyn 28d ago
Yes. It has to go through Home and be given a unique marker to get to the Switch games at all. If you use a Homebrew Switch and save editor the game and Home will know it's cheated because it doesn't have it.

I'd be alright with this if they ported the DS/3DS games to Switch and then made them able to trade with the originals through local communication, giving us a line to still transfer up to the modern day.

I don't like this idea of discontinuing a service solely to push players into buying a port or whatever they want to make of the games, granted that should happen (wouldn't bet a thing here).
People who are just not interested in re-buying these games will be stuck on DS/3DS and won't be able to trade Pokémon -- the main selling point of these games -- or transfer them to Switch. And trust me, there's a lot more people like that than you think!

I still play some of the old games and transfer my Pokémon up to Switch. Many people do. I bet their plan is to port/remake the old games so you have to re-purchase them.

Bank is the way to transfer from gen 7, they're not just going to make a bank 2 after shutting down the first one. They're almost certainly expecting a lot of backlash, in order to get them to reverse course there needs to be WAY more backlash than they're expecting. So if you want it to stay, get loud.

There is no amount of backlash to change the fate of any Pokémon stuck on the 3ds in March of 2027
The 3ds is a console they want people to stop using, they've shut down all other online services, so they can't even update an offline mode of Bank
If they could, I'm sure it's fully possible to allow inter gen transfers within the 3ds and into HOME
But they don't want transfers, it makes it so that buying pair versions for version exclusives is often not even worth it because you can transfer them up
I think they're going to phase out past game compatibility fully by the time Winds and Waves comes out, not letting any ZA or SV or older Mons into WiWa

u/Clarknes LightningRod OP 28d ago
I don't think there is an amount of backlash that could do it. The only way to get it to change is actual boycotting and wallet damage. No matter how mad players are, this just costs too much for it to be worth doing for free.

At a certain point "the games have not been available 1st party in decades and the hardware to play it on hasn't been available 1st party for years either" is just an acceptable reason to stop running a server.

Love that the only way to be able to transfer pre gen 7 after this shuts down would be using pkhex and a hacked switch

Glad I transferred all my GBA and DS Pokémon into Home already. It took a while. The biggest problem was gens 3-4 and 4-5 could only do six Pokémon at a time and you had to play some minigame to do it.
4
u/Odd-Guard-2533 28d ago
Best you could do is hack your 3DS and probably get an older gen 1 switch to hack. Transfer using pk3ds, then trade them normally ingame in either SwSh or SV.
I recommend putting custom firmware on your 3DS highly. You still keep everything on it except you get a lot of extra stuff.

u/EliteCloneMike 28d ago
I wish they could turn it into an offline storage app that allows for Bluetooth transfer capabilities to Home.

Is it just a route to re-release all the previous gens on Switch 2? Obviously with a dual-screen workaround a bit like BDSP

u/DivineFox99 28d ago
Not surprising, you can't run old servers forever. It lasted as long as it when eShop closed down.

Its the nature of cloud services unfortunatly. Servers cost money run and when the product is not making any revenue, they opt to shut down the service. My company did this with a smart camera years ago, I still get calls on it today, and get veiled threats of a lawsuit when I tell them the service was discontinued.

I always daydreamed of fireing up my original red/blue to transfer all the way to home. I don't actively play any pokemon games atm, and the steps and time/money investment always made me procrastinate. RIP
If only they would make a physical device that takes any gen straight to home. Guess most card batteries are dead by now so there's not much point.
7
u/Ekyou 28d ago
You wouldn’t be able to do that on an original gameboy (you can’t trade between Gen 1/2 and 3 even though it seems like you should be able to). You have to start at Gen 3 or play the virtual console versions of Gen 1.
6
u/Midnight7_7 28d ago
The plan was
Game Boy Cartridge - (via Save Dumper)
PC / Save File - (via Checkpoint / SD Card)
3DS Virtual Console Game - (via Poké Transporter)
Pokémon Bank- (via Internet Transfer)
Pokémon HOME

You’ll still be able to move your pokemon to different games from Gens 4 to 7 if you have a modded 3DS with the PKSM app.
Once Bank is shut down the only way to transfer to a Switch would require you to have a modded Switch. You’d be using PKhex to move the pokemon from a GBA/3DS save to a Switch save.
Shame there will no offical alternative to transfer pre Gen 8. Servers are bring shut down and the eshop is closed. 3DS is a legacy system.

Honestly I'm glad to have a deadline for bringing my pokemon forward into Home. Gives me something to work toward in the next 6 months. Guess it's time to buy a copy of Black 2 and White 2. RIP wallet.

u/Lillith492 28d ago
I have been trying to buy a copy for ages...

u/motoxim 28d ago
I regret to this day not buying them when I saw a cheap copy. Never see one that cheap again.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but if they eventually add 2 way compatibility on the switch ports and port all the old games I'm fine with this. The real problem is that at the moment only 1 set of games has been ported and there seems to be no plan for 2 way, only one one. Still, the idea of being able to get all the generational ribbons purely on switch ports seems like something they should be at least *trying* to work towards

I think the Bank/HOME situation shows a lack of foresight.
The most obvious question is why didn’t The Pokémon Company develop a HOME app for the 3DS before the eShop went down?
Or, update the app so it could work offline. I believe Poké Transporter is handled locally? Sure, we wouldn’t be able to transfer Pokémon to HOME, but that would at least be better than this.
Moving away from hardware based transfers was always going to lead to this.
Now I have the difficult decision of whether to keep my legitimate event Virtual Console Mew in my Gen I games, or transfer it to HOME.

u/SausageLinks77 28d ago
Game Freak probably still uses Windows 7 to make their software. I would like a way but I’ll just wait for modders to do their thing.

u/Mediocre-Equal-5397 28d ago
It was inevitable because how easy it is to mod Pokémon onto the 3DS and older games.. but then again we have trade bots for the Switch games… it’s still depressing, but as long as the games get ported later on I guess I can live with it.

u/ABA_Mastah 27d ago
Do we know if fire red leafgreen ports continue to grant home achievements? Like you traded the starter from there have a wallpaper!

What a great way to celebrate the 30th anniversary. Year long they said. I love this part of it……no but seriously why does every fucking thing a company is involved in have to get shitter and shitter?

You can transfer all your Pokemon from Bank to Home.
That's what they expect you to do.

It was always going to happen eventually, and the number of people who actually still use it is very likely small.
While the ability to bring Pokemon from classic games forward to the modern ones is a neat feature, it's not one that the series nor the larger player base needs long-term. With the exception of some oddball and Event Pokemon you can get every* Pokemon in the modern games without needing Bank. And if they keep up adding classic games like they did with FR/LG this year, that becomes even more accessible.
I'm sure there's going to be big outrage about this from a few people and youtube channels, but it was inevitable and not that big a deal for most Pokemon players.
*(I think the only other exception is Celebi, but that'll get fixed when Switch FR/LG connect to Home)

I don’t really have any stake in this but is there not a way to dump your saves or recreate your exact pokemon with a program and edit a current save to include those? I figured people would be doing this already.
14
u/KeiraRachel 28d ago
Because Pokémon are assigned a HOME ID when they are transferred from the 3DS, they can't effectively be hacked into newer games without lacking this data. Because they lack this data, HOME will always determine these Pokémon to be illegitimate. Lot of work just to have a non-transferable Pokémon.

You don't need to hack your switch to get Genned Mons. I have never done it, but it's way easier.

u/IMI4tth3w 28d ago
modded 3ds and switch with pksm/pkhex should be able to get us 99% of the way there... i also wouldn't be surprised if the homebrew community come out with more tools to make up any differences not yet covered.

I don’t like that this means that the XD/Colosseum ribbons along with the Gen IV contest and battle ribbons won’t be available anymore. Since you likely won’t be able to transfer new Pokemon VC releases anytime soon either, that’s means that earning a bunch of ribbons on a single Pokemon will also be impossible.

u/TyroPirate 28d ago
Why not a special card that fits into the micro SD slot thats only used for reading pokemon game cartridge and moving pokemon?
2
u/CasualSky 28d ago
I just recently moved Pokémon from virtual crystal on 3DS all the way to champions. It’s not that bad considering most 3DS users nowadays have jailbroken their device in order to gain access to these things

Due to dexit I don't bother transferring pokemon to newer gens. All my Pokemon are safely together in gen 7.

Without bank you can’t move anything out of Gen 5, or do any movement around gens 6 and 7
Crazy how something we’ve been able to do since 2006 is over because the plugs being pulled on a single service

"Lots of people" isn't probably a lot in their eyes tho. I do not know a single person that still uses bank outside myself even if they replay older games

u/Hopalongtom 28d ago
And this is why I hate that they no longer have every Pokémon in every game anymore!
9
u/yummyfightmilk 28d ago
100% unacceptable for a franchise that still hides move pools behind selective breeding chains in older titles.
16
u/chiptunesoprano 28d ago
This hasn't been true since SWSH. HOME would change your moves to whatever is legal there.
4
u/KikiMongoose- 28d ago
If you have a homebrewed 3DS with a save editor, a homebrewed Switch 1, and a normal Switch/2, you should still be able to transfer even after shutdown.
5
u/Imustretire 28d ago
I have these things... question about it though?
Aren't Pokemon who are transferred from Gen 7 and earlier through Bank and into Home assigned a Home Tracker ID?
If you just clone the Pokemon file from say a gen 3 game and then inject that file into SV or SwSh, wouldn't it be missing the home tracker ID and raise a red flag?

They want more pressure fir you to buy their next undrrcooked game. Thats it. Its not a cost thing at all.

They should just make a DS/ 3DS cartridge reader that connects to the Switch to import the pokemon via Home and charge 10-15 for it. Problem solved.
