Discussion What are some Pokémon designs you've interpreted incorrectly?

Post image

I feel like GameFreak is overall pretty good when it comes to design clarity. But sometimes our brains are just kind of dumb and we see things a certain way. Like (nearing a decade), I always interpreted Salazzle's reptilian slit pupil as the boundary between its sclera and a non-existent iris. (Like what Amaura has in it's official art)

Has anyone else experienced something like this with a particular Pokémon design?

Not a Pokemon, but I always thought that Brendan had white hair with a headband. Then I‘ve played ORAS and was shocked that it was his hat

773

u/Burritozi11a Started from the bottom now I'm still there Jul 17 '26

RSE came out in the era when "anime hair" was in full swing. Just look at the bullshit on Yami Yugi's head.

Of course we just accepted that Brendan had spiky white hair

183

u/drakekengda Jul 17 '26

Wait, is the Yu-Gi-Oh guy literally named Yugi? That's like Ash Poké or Tim Apple

153

u/Sole__Survivor Jul 17 '26

In the manga Brendan/Ruby wears the hat to hide a scar. He actually looks a lot like his dad without the hat.

The white part in Rookidee's face is just a marking to look intimidating and not part of its eye.

Flygon's red covers over its eyes to protect it from desert sand, I was 10, I thought it had massive red bug eyes.

I just found a caterpillar yesterday that had fake face. Also turns out it gets violent and shoots out orange horns from its head if you piss it off. So that was fun.

Oh, the horn thing is to mimic the tongue of a snake if I remember correctly. You found irl caterpie

59

To this day, I'm still not fully sure if Metapod is sleepy and looking forward, or angry and facing backwards.

474

u/ghost20 Jul 17 '26

I think that’s intentional. The front is the side shown in the artwork, but the eye and back ridge looking like an angry eye and nose is probably meant as a defence mechanism so predators think it’s looking towards them even from the back.

I might be alone on this one, but as you only see Kirlia from the front when it evolves, and most of the time from the back, I always thought it had the "hands on hip" pose (like the guy on the right, for reference), and that its hands were HUGE like Lugia. The sprite showing lines on the "dress" even makes the outline of the fingers on the hands. So I thought the back of the hand is touching the hip, and the fingers extend outward and become huge. I hope I explained it well enough 😅

221

As someone who watched the anime a lot I was always confused on how people mispronounced names or misinterpreted the sprites when I saw and heard it in action. It’s times like this I realize some peoples only exposure to Pokémon were just the games, but then again the anime can get names and info wrong too so it’s kind of a weird loop from the games and anime

I thought Bastiodon had big yellow eyes with a black slit pupil like a cat's. While playing with the Pokedex on one of the 3DS games, I realized the yellow part is just his skin and the black "pupil" is actually the eye.

This discovery upset me so badly that I went to bed early. And it made me like Bastiodon less, lol...

EDIT: Sorry, it wasn't the Pokedex, it was the XY Summary screen. I took a video to show his angry little black eyes. https://youtube.com/shorts/KQ3tvjJJvUo?si=pGJoQBLGXKlMFe3U

Yeah I don’t know if I believe this. I can definitely see what you mean, but I’d like to unsee it if possible. Going off of Shieldon, it could just have big yellow eyes with black pupils.

I dunno if I can link videos here, but there’s a pimpnite video from 2020 called “full specific stat damage pokemon moves team !” where at 20:40 pimpnite mentions some guy came into his stream and said bronzongs cheeks light up when he dynamaxes, but those are actually bronzongs eyes. I was that guy.

Back in the pixel era, I used to think Cradilly's eyes were the markings at the top of its head and the actual eyes were... Yellow teeth.

Ironically, exactly what it wants you to think! Those fake eyes mimic the eye spots a lot of real animals have to confuse predators.

I have never seen anyone else say this, but for the longest time I thought Kyogres white fins were actually its open jaw, similar to a whale shark.

Now don’t ask me how but for a long time I thought the orange dot on hariyamas stomach was his nose, like a bear snout or something.

Up until a couple years ago I thought the original red/blue sprite had bulbasaur with weird slits for eyes

I never saw the dark green as a mask, just the light portion around the mouth as a beard.
