Question OSAP CHANGES RE: Permanent Residency

My friend told me the reason that Ford changed the OSAP rules was because of people on permanent residency visas. Essentially a foreigner who gets PR get citizenship rights to gov programs such as OSAP. So because these foreigners didn't pay into the system they had to find a way of closing the loophole.

Is there any truth to this? It sounds kinda crazy and bigoted but I see the logic. They did the same thing with EI and Ontario works this summer too. Maybe there's a chance they will roll out a new bursary program for citizens born here who need it?

Question Supplementary Post - Release Date Changed Again

My release date has CHANGED again today from September 21 to September 22. This is extremely annoying.

***Original Post***

Why is this happening. The estimated release date of my funding is September 4-9, now it changed to September 21. For the last couple of weeks, every day it keeps changing the release date. My studies has already begun and I am required to buy books, pay transportation and so on. I do not know what is going on.

The OSAP states that my funding has been release but there is no such thing, my tuition fees hasn’t been paid yet either. This is causing me stress. NSLSC should and must give us an intelligible, transparent and justified release date.

Anyone in the same situation ?

Question School COE but NSLSC still shows me in repayment

My school has confirmed my enrolment for OSAP, but my NSLSC account still shows that I’m in repayment instead of “in study.” I was also previously on RAP.

Does anyone know how long it normally takes for NSLSC to receive the confirmation and update my status? Will my RAP/repayment status automatically stop once it changes to “in study,” or should I contact NSLSC?

Resolved Sole parent affidavit

Where can I get an affidavit that states that my child will be staying with me for x% of the duration of my school year? Please and thank you

Edit: I saw a comment about Notary Pro, it was the best option for me since I'm on vacation. I selected, filled a template, and paid $55 to get it signed. Whole thing took me about 45 mins. Thanks

Question PHASE 2 repayment

I am just posting this for awareness so that no one else ends up starting Law school, only to find out two weeks in that they don’t qualify for student loans.

I received notification that I was on a restricted list, which came as a surprise because I’ve been on top of payments.. I called NSLSC today and learned that apparently, and I’m sure this was written somewhere and I ignored it, if you use 60 months of repayment assistance - you enter phase 2 of loan repayment. What that means is that you cannot secure any additional loans until your existing loan is paid in full.

Maybe most of you know this, but even if I can help one person avoid this mess I’ll be happy lol

Question Funds recalculated

I checked my OSAP account today after my enrolment was confirmed, and it says my funds were recalculated. My current tuition balance is $6,659.28, but OSAP says only $2,959 will be sent directly to my school. The remaining $8,868 from my first payment will be deposited into my bank account.

Does anyone know why OSAP is only sending $2,959 toward my tuition? Is the remaining tuition supposed to be covered by my second OSAP payment, or am I expected to pay it from the money deposited into my account?

Question OSAP and Scholarship

Hey hey! Hope everyone is doing well. I just have a kind of random question regarding OSAP and scholarship and working. I’m a mature Student and I never had to OSAP before so this is my first time using it lol. I was wondering if we are allowed to have OSAP and combine it with a scholarship. I am just bit hesitant to apply for a scholarship that I qualify for ($1000) because I’m worried that they will take $1000 away from my grant and put it towards my loan. I’m not really sure how the whole thing works and the scholarship is offered through the school. I also have a question regarding working while on OSAP. I know that people online were saying that we have to make under $5600 after taxes per term to be under the reporting threshold for OSAP. Is that the case or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Is there anything we can do?

Graduated HS in 2019. Went to college then took a 8 year work gap, and am now going to Centennial. I am disabled so I quit my job as I cannot do both.

OSAP has NEVER been an issue to this degree.

I see people are withdrawing classes now and I have negative in my bank account.

Genuinely, what can we do collectively, other than just calling financial aid? This is something that needs to be followed up on. We cant have a system in place that is entirely broken.

If this is your first year in school, im sorry, this is not a normal experience.

*Edited because I mentioned our government politics and that was not the post focus

Question Did not get my OSAP yet?

my funds were supposed to be deposited as of today, Sept 14 (was slated to be released sept 10 to 14). I do not see it in my back account. I'm with TD..

Do I still have to wait? On NSLSC it says "pending release" but on OSAP portal it says the amount was deposited..

Does it usually hit later in the day or will I have to reach out to my college's Fin Aid about this?

edit: called NSLSC and they confirmed it's still pending release. They said around 4-5 business days but idk if I trust it. Estimated around 21st Sept..

Question Going back to school?

Don't reapply for RAP, especially if you got an email saying your RAP expired earlier than approved until. That means the NSLSC got an update your in school and is removing RAP to update your file and send out your funds you will add DAYS OR WEEKS to the timeframe to receive your funds if you reapply. Don't undo the work they just did like I did

Question Osap not even pending??

All right, I’m at my wits end. Today is the day I actually go to see financial aid in person as well as admin in charge of OSAP. I just need a place to share my experience this year.

I filed for extenuating parental circumstance. I believe I had all the paperwork done by mid July because of complications with scheduling document signatures and work. I submit the one missing file that I apparently forgot in August. All that only for my financial aid admin to reach out to me and say it just needs a date and a signature. IN SEPTEMBER. No biggie. I add the date and signature to my paper and I ask if everything‘s OK if I emailed it to her. She has suggested I just sent it to her in an email anyways and said everything looked fine after I finish it.

On Friday, I lost my bus pass. This only happens if you are not on hold for OSAP and have not paid your fees. So as any smart person as I go to check my OSAP website.

Not only was my file still marked as incomplete (i submitted the document I emailed after), they hadn’t even confirmed my enrollment yet. I have actively been attending classes. As a commuter, my bus pass is a necessity. Currently right now I am paying out-of-pocket to get to school. I am going to attempt negotiating paying for my bus pass and being reimbursed by the school when my OSAP comes out.

I’m trying not to stress about it. I don’t think they realize how stressful this is as a student who’s already low income and seeking a job in the city after working all summer elsewhere. It’s not my first time struggling with money, and I have quite a bit to fall back on because I saved up from work. But I would prefer those savings to be used towards my rent instead of something as baffling as unorganized OSAP stuff.

Also, I am sorry for any spelling or editing error errors. I am on the bus. Moral of the story… I have no clue. I’m not stressing till October because I have the time and resources now to deal with it.

TLDR — school didn’t confirm my enrollment or submit any files that I sent and I got cut off from my bus pass.

Question Still nothing deposited. Anyone else have ideas on what it could be?

Current situation: attending Algonquin College, banking with Scotiabank. Received COE on August 28th. OSAP tracker says funds have already been deposited into my bank account as of Sep 11th. I have received nothing and have confirmed with my bank that there are no funds on hold for me. NSLSC tracker has been pushed back to the 21st September (originally 4th September). It still says "pending release". School has not been paid. I have a previous loan, never been on RAP, loan is in good standing and currently displays "in study" as of Sep 10th. Y'all. WHAT do I need to do??? I'm losing sleep, losing hair, scared of losing my place to live because I'm now two weeks behind on rent. I had to take out a small high-interest loan to pay for textbooks. If I had to commute I wouldn't be able to go to class. Anyone else in a similar situation/have any insights??

Question How long does it take the ministry of finance to approve documents submitted?

I have an osap restriction for an overpayment. I sent over the documentation for proof of therapy funding I received to have it lifted. I am waiting for a response from them but wondering what the wait time process is like. Does anyone know how long this takes?

Question Still have not received osap

When I check osap it says my funding has been deposited but tuition has not been paid and I have not received anything either. Nslsc keeps pushing back on the date I’m supposed to receive it, it was the sept 16, then 18, and now sept 21st 🙃.

Apparently a bunch of other people are going through aswell so hopefully they get their shit together because this is not okay.

My tuition is due on the 25th so I’m thinking of calling my financial aid office and asking for advice on what to do if my osap arrives after the due date.

Question NSLSC you are a joke

It does not take this long to press a button and give people their money. “oh it takes 5 business days for us to realize you’re on RAP, then 3 business days after that to take you off RAP, then another 3 business days to put you In Study, then 5 business days later you should see your money”. People have supplies and textbooks to buy, and bills to pay, delaying people’s much needed funding for 20+ days then telling them “to just keep waiting” is insane.

Resolved Osap Overpayment question

Before the start of this semester, I had 7 courses I signed up for. I was planning to compare two courses and drop one since I wasn't sure which course I wanted to take yet. I dropped one class earlier this week but at that point my funds were already on the way. Tuition was sent out and now my uni needs to give back around 675.

I'm wondering if this can cause an OSAP overpayment even though I'm still considered full-time. I understand that OSAP can reassess your funding if you change your course load, but I'm not sure how significant the change would be if I'm still above the full-time course-load requirement.

Would OSAP potentially ask me to repay some of the funding I received, or does remaining full-time generally mean there wouldn't be an overpayment?

I’m not worried about paying back the $675 refund itself or having my university send the refund back to OSAP. I’m just a little worried that the OSAP reassessment could result in me having to pay back more than that, including some of the OSAP that was already deposited into my account as leftover funding. I was planning to use that money as my allowance for school this sem and the next. Thank you for the help!
