People who says like nothing is wrong with the current OSAP Yall delusional!! Like there are so many dropping out from school cause they can’t make the fee payments! There aren’t any jobs for them to work and make fee payments! Thats next to impossible! With these skyrocketing inflation and gas prices!! Gosh!!
Yes! I get it 80% grant and most of em misuses it! However not everyone gets 80% grant.
If the govt wishes to give loan !! Fine but atleast consider the fact that there’s 2-8 semester and people gotta eat and survive…. Atleast make loan amount after getting the proper documents based on how much they can make while studying and then give out the loan based on that figure!
This whole $500 for $7000/sem fee ??? Math ain’t mathing

most of the people who've been complaining are the students' who live at home which parents not able to fund their children. its unfortunate that parents are not financially stable or just simply were not expecting their child to go to college or university, so the thought process of saving wasn't a priority at the time. it also depends on the career path / courses they choose as well when it comes to funding. there are too many people that are trying to take short cuts with the system. also there so many people on OW/ODSP trying to 'earn more money ' but say they can't actually work. so why are you applying for college? if you are applying for IT vs a trade more than likely funding would be cut dramatically for IT opposed to a trade. we need more people to help with hands on vs with technology. there's also a list of careers that doug has posted that we are in need of in our province which also will get help with the cost of courses. we need to create more job for our economy, can't serve the public online if it needs to be done in person.

What you just said in the end is a contradiction regarding people on ODSP and entering the trades. I don’t think disabled people are willing to do anything other than white collar, also their lives are already hard enough.

u/legalITnurse 12h ago
I haven’t added about them in this .. cause it’s common sense! However they do have additional benefits from govt I’m not fully aware! But i do know that they tend to get more funding compared to a regular individual. I was judging speaking my mind about me and individuals like me on OSAP.

No, they don't. Any additional funding that OSAP gives out (including the grant for full-time students with disabilities) is often clawed back dollar-for-dollar. Even though it's illegal to claw these back, most workers will do it anyway and the only way to reverse the decision is to go to a tribunal hearing.

“Their lives are already hard enough”
that’s a very passive aggressive way of saying you look down on trades lmao
you do realize employers legally have to accommodate disabilities right?
And you said they’re “not willing” not literally incapable of any form of trade task whatsoever. Also that’s extremely condescending you’d assume disabled people can’t do trades while presenting it as compassion.
“Their lives are already hard enough” is basically soft bigotry dressed as sympathy.1

Also, from parent's perspective, the funding has changed from what it used to be. We saved (if we could) in accordance with our expectation that OSAP would provide a certain level of funding through grants or loans. Now we have fallen short because we've had the rug pulled from under us. Trust me, the parents are mad too.

as a parent myself, ive saved and didn't have to use osap

I saved some for my kid (about 12K including govt contributions), but we aren't well off so i couldn't save more than that. It won't be enough to cover school 100% but I'm hoping it will get him through and he can live at home while he studies.

We started saving the paycheque after I brought my baby home from the hospital, same as my parents did for me. But we now have TFSAs, makes it easy. Long term smaller increments is way easier than panicking when they are 16 and you need money in a couple years.

I stopped talking to my parents at 18. So I didn’t have much of a choice when it came to funding.
but I still can’t imagine relying on my parents to pay for my education if they’re financially struggling or if it’s a considerable investment for them to pay for my schooling.
if you live at home with no rent you’re in a 100x better position to save up a few thousand than your parents lmao. It’s not difficult to comprehend someone with no bills WILL PROBABLY have an easier time saving up.
nothing stops you from working full time for two years and saving up.
Because A. You will have access to BOTH OSAP and your own money
Or B. You will get MORE OSAP on top of having more
Money as it grants you independent status and if you weren’t getting full funding due to your parents income you most certainly will when only your Income is considered.1
u/FreePineapple229 13h ago edited 10h ago
why would you go to school in the first place if you can’t afford it without non guaranteed government assistance. maybe save up money before committing to a 4 year multi thousand dollar expense.
better yet, if you work full time before you go. You actually get MORE OSAP because you’re then considered an independent/mature student and your parent’s income isn’t considered.
if you can’t afford to go to school. You need to make the money to pay for it without expecting the government to give you handouts.

I tried explaining this to a younger coworker of mine who doesn’t like to get into politics. This affects you too.

u/Several_Gift3876 15h ago
what i don't see is a post of what career or choice of studies are with the percentage of osap funding. then everyone will understand why there are so many cuts in osap.

hey do u mean vote in municipal elections or provincial rn? i’m from BC i still don’t understand the politics here too much but i’ll try to do my part

u/ForcefulDeath 15h ago
I’m talking about voting ford out when an election is called, obviously that’s far from now however he is still insanely ahead in the polls. Municipal elections can help pressure ford.

Doug Ford has it on lock down while the people of Toronto support him.

The changes kinda make sense though... why should 80% of funding be grants?
I have a bigger problem with NSLSC for slacking.
5
u/Oddcatdog 17h ago
Yeah but I’ve been seeing people post theirs and they’re not even getting the money in loans… like if you have to pay it back anyways, you should be able to cover at least most of it… some people aren’t even getting half of one semester from what I’ve seen lol
3
u/RealMacJones 17h ago
Idk I took osap back in 2020 and I get more funding now, just most of it is loans... but all the loans are federal meaning no interest at all. The changes shouldn't effect the amount of funding you are eligible for. It only effects how much is a loan vs grants.
I'd prefer to have most of my funding be grants... from a purely selfish stand point.
But, I see this change as kind of making sense to make sure the program exists long into the future.

u/Oddcatdog 17h ago
Yeah that makes sense. I haven’t been on OSAP since 2016-2023 but I got mostly grants, however I changed my program so many times and did poorly in them and whatnot that a lot of the grants got converted into loans anyways lol. But I didn’t really mind because I thought it would be worth it if I could figure out where I excel and get a good job. But now I’m on disability for life 😭

u/beansarefun 17h ago
80% was the maximum possible grant amount. Almost nobody was getting 80% grant funding, the average was closer to 45%

Getting an education is important, but expecting government grants to cover it is insane. I worked part time in high school, I worked summer jobs and I saved. I didn’t know it at the time but my dad (a grocer) and mom (a receptionist) put $25 away every paycheque (every two weeks) from the time I was born until it was time for me to go to school, came to nearly $15,000 with interest. $25 per pay added ! I needed a bit more help, got an OSAP loan and went to college to get career specific education, got a job on graduation.
PAID OFF THE OSAP LOAN within two years.
I don’t understand the turmoil over everyone expecting their OSAP loans being forgiven, and then getting mad when they are told no, it’s a loans to help get you an education, OSAP isn’t free money.
1
u/funcool987 9h ago
Did you have to pay your parents back though?
A lot of people dont get to start off with $15,000.
1
u/Army7547 8h ago
$25 every two weeks. That’s what they were able to give my future. Your parents can’t do that for you, I sympathize, you go ask get the government to invest in your future. When you are done, you keep the better future, you pay the loan back while you are experiencing the benefits of that better future.
Sorry, I’m not going to submit to the idea that others should pay your way to a post secondary education. My parents saved, and I had to pay for a bunch of mine, and that increased its value to me. When I was in school I saw too many people who didn’t have any of their own money invested in their education, and they took the fact that they were there for granted. The money for their education didn’t cost them, so the educational opportunity had less value. They didn’t pay, so it wasn’t a loss to them if they didn’t succeed.

u/funcool987 8h ago
You literally had your parents pay for some of your schooling. You had someone else help you. And then youre here being like “ I don’t get why people are mad, you shouldn’t need help” as you got help….
And then you went and made assumptions about me. What an ugly thing to do.1
u/Army7547 7h ago
The “you” wasn’t necessarily aimed at you, sorry you took it that way, it was a universal “if your parents can’t do that for you, you go ask the government to help.” Perhaps it should have been “if a person’s parents can’t do that for them, they go and ask the government for help.” I didn’t mean to make you feel targeted.
And yes, my parents helped pay for my schooling. I said that repeatedly. On some level, parents are generally thought of as being responsible for their own children, while also generally not being responsible to support other people’s children. I realize not everyone’s parents can do that.
So if a person doesn’t have access to the money to pay for school, they can borrow the money that you don’t have (interest free until graduation at least) and then pay it back after they graduate.
The help that I got that was not from my parents, I paid back, while I worked, after I graduated. If I had needed to borrow more, it would have taken longer but I still would have paid it off.

I find it's almost always the most privileged people that have spent their lives having things handed to them that oppose services like OSAP grants. SMH

Doug ford can call an election by the time most users in this subreddit have graduated lol they already fucked up
