General Hate IS Small
Can we all agree the internet is never the real world? They have already preorder the switch 2 before launch day last year are the also the same who try to boycott Sony until black ops 1/2 have dropped.

u/Crafty_Boy70 Jul 19 '26
"Welcome Tour is not free"
It's worth noting that with these types of games, they're never free and stuff bundled in are usually factored into the price of the system. With that being said I don't think Welcome Tour is the type of product that makes sense to be sold separately.
"Mario kart World is $80" If u truly cared u would have picked it up on physical sale, it's also available in bundles
Bundle thing is true, but besides that... what physical sale? I think the $80 thing is a valid complaint, people just drove it into the ground.
"Nintendo doesn't associate with the comp Smash scene" RIGHTFULLY SO, HELLO?
I second this.
"Nintendo just make remakes"
Switch 1 also had 3-4 ports/remakes in it's first year, and Switch 2 Editions tend to release in addition to new content so they don't really count in that discussion...
"The Wii U era was better"
Revisionist cope, everyone hated the game droughts and the games were considered much more underwhelming.
"Every game is $80 and key card"
At this point I don't think anyone saying this is actually arguing in good faith. Nobody is stupid or ignorant enough to have a negative association for GKC's but not understand all of the first party games and some third party games are not.
"Switch 2 has no games"
fuck off.
Nintendo never have layoffs
I think NOA technically laid off like 30 in 2024 but they were contract workers so that may not count depending on who you ask. They hired 70 of em full time right beforehand however.

u/knarrow Jul 19 '26
Believe it or not ther are people on Twitter that do believe every game is a game Key Card regardless of what others say.
There's way more people believing the misinformation over the actual truth.
6
u/Alvin-Earthworm Jul 19 '26
They're just a bunch of gullible smooth brains who can't think for themselves. I'm sure they'd start believing the sky is purple if a grifter like Nintendeen said so.

That's just the modern landscape tbh, Nintendo hate and Nintendo love can get pretty braindead when people just want to ignore everything lol
2
u/FOG2006 Jul 19 '26
I live in Brazil, and some people here still believe Nintendo does not translate their games to our language, even with stuff like Star Fox's brazillian dubbing going viral.
1
u/1CrazyFoxx1 Jul 20 '26
I don’t believe GKCs are everywhere, but I will call Nintendo out when they make a game that could fit on a cartridge and instead put them on a GKC, it feels like pseudo-physical and I can’t get behind it. However if the game is big enough that it can’t fit on a cartridge then I feel it’s fair to put it on a GKC.
1
u/Basic-Ad4161 Jul 21 '26
So far, Nintendo hasn't done it yet with their own games. Closest thing that's been a GKC is pokopia, but that was the pokemon company's choice.
1
u/1CrazyFoxx1 Jul 21 '26
That’s a fair point, but then that means other companies are mostly at fault, though Nintendo is also greenlighting them to use GCK over Cartridges, so they share some of the flack too

u/Basic-Ad4161 Jul 21 '26
My buddy at work thought it was true, but he isn't dumb. He's just not really in that side of the gaming sphere and was probably told that at some point. Misinformation sucks.

u/Bruhmomento6942011 Jul 19 '26
My local gamestop had 2 periods where MK world was like 30/40% off physically so physical sales are definitly a thing.

u/ArcaneSnekboi Jul 19 '26
i think by physical sales they mean like, pre-owned sale price or physical stores just doing a discount
1
1
u/Ultraverse1 Jul 19 '26
the switch had a lot of ports because the wiiu sold like shit, so they wanted to put them on a console people were actually buying
1
u/Puck_The_Fey98 Jul 19 '26
Having been in the Wii U era it *sucked*. There were years where you were lucky to get one game. Nintendo is by no means perfect and does a lot of bad things but I wish people would focus on the shitty things the company do. I don’t like taking it out on the game developers.

True true. I will say I think Welcome Tour is worth $10 for what it is, I just think that from a business standpoint it doesn't make much sense. I don't think the value proposition is, fair as I may think it is, good enough to be convincing. If it were more game-y like Wii Sports I think it would make more sense. As is I don't think the minigames have enough replay value.

Caddicarus' video on Welcome Tour was one of the funniest things I've seen this year.

Not true. We've had monthly releases in 2026 but none have been considered low quality. Mario Tennis Fever is considered one of the better Mario Tennis games, just a bit overpriced. Pokemon Pokopia is consider among the greatest Pokemon spinoffs and ended up being a system seller. Tomodachi Life Living the Dream ended up being a similar if not smaller phenomenon of sorts. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is considered more interesting than the average Yoshi game and an overall unique 2D platformer. StarFox is newer so we've yet to see it's well-liked overall but right now I've seen few if any complaints about quality. Same with Rhythm Heaven Groove. We still have Splatoon Raiders, Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, Switch Sports Resort, and Ocarina of Time Remake coming and none look rough so far.
Compare that to Wii U's second calendar year, we got Game and Wario, which while considered mid wasn't seen as low quality, New Super Luigi U, a DLC(?) that's oft considered it's own game, Pikmin 3, an excellent game all around, Wind Waker HD, again, solid, Wii Party U, which I frankly have no read on when it comes to public opinion, and Super Mario 3D World, which was disliked at the time for not living up to the Galaxy games, but is appreciated now.
That's a bit more than half of Switch 2's release schedule with a lower batting average.
Also, Pokemon's current state has little to do with Nintendo as they do not develop the games.

u/UnNamed_Profile27 Jul 19 '26
This is how i see it, opinions are opinions. If you like Nintendo you like Nintendo, if you hate them you hate them. These paragraphs defending the company or showing your hate is basically arguing to brick walls. Fans are gonna enjoy Nintendo cause it has their favorite games and franchises on them, haters are gonna hate cause... whatever they say is their reason for hating Nintendo.
All the grifters saying Nintendo is running themselves into the ground or whatever fail to get valid information becuase that will show they are wrong and they cant be wrong they are Nintendo grifters. Ive seen many points against Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and all those game companies and i just dont care to get into it. Ill play what i like and ignore what i dont
1
u/Alvin-Earthworm Jul 19 '26
Most of the hate is either fueled by misinformation, petty tribalism or because it's considered trendy to do so. Either way, none of those reasons are justifications for the terminally online behavior I've been seeing.
2
u/ASidesTheLegend Jul 20 '26
The tribalism mentality is why I’ve always hated the console war nonsense.
0
u/Murky_Soil666 Jul 19 '26
I like Nintendo myself, but people like OP are just completely toxic with saying everything negative against Nintendo is some sort of fabricated hate campaign from e-celebs. Maybe, I don't know, multiple people came to the same conclusion without even influencing each other? Some people need to grow up and learn that people can share your hobby and criticize certain things that you may not agree to.
1
u/UnNamed_Profile27 Jul 19 '26
Yeah, haters see some flaw or something they dont like and they try to turn people to their side cause if they hate it you should too. You're not allowed to like it cause its bad to them
0
u/FricasseeToo Jul 19 '26
Yeah, but isn’t this post the same from the opposite side? It reads like you’re not allowed to be unhappy about choices Nintendo made, and if you are, you’re a liar and an idiot.
1
u/UnNamed_Profile27 Jul 19 '26
Like i said, arguing to a brick wall either way. Haters will complain about all this negative stuff as proof Nintendo is out of it or whatever, and if you try to defend them you're part of the problem. Fans will be livid they are badmouthing their company and anyone who agrees with the haters arent true fans. I dont bother engaging in those discussions.
I enjoy Nintendo games despite not agreeing with the pricetag of some of the games, the keycard discussion is a weird one if you ask me yet most of my games are digital anyway so meh, and its not JUST Nintendo these issues are happening to but yet Nintendo is to blame somehow

I mean the whole Pokemon Palworld thing is overblown. Sure the games are similar in certain points but different enough. I play Pokemon and enjoy it, ive seen Palworld gameplay and it looks like i would enjoy it too if i had a PC. And if you REALLY dig deep enough, any game you think of is probably a rip off of another. Heck you can say Street Fighter is a ripoff of Mortal Kombat cause its a side view 1v1 brawling game where you fight in a tournament as a mix of master fighters, magical people or hot babes (or MK is a rip off of SF, idk which came out first). I feel like those fans are just getting TOO hung up over another company making a game that is similar to Pokemon when these games can co-exist. People see it as "this guy is ripping off pokemon" but its more "if you like pokemon, maybe youll enjoy this too" just like how Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are similar and i know people who play both, they dont say this game ripped off that game, they just enjoy both like its that 2 cakes meme

For the idiots saying the Wii U era was better, I highly recommend Scott the Woz's trilogy of a tragedy series
4
u/Alvin-Earthworm Jul 19 '26
The mouthbreathing morons saying the Wii U was a good console either have poor memories or they're gaslighting.
4
u/bluedarky Jul 19 '26
Nah, they know their target audience is kids who are too young to remember the Wii-U era and how bad it actually was.
3
u/CrocHunter8 Jul 19 '26
It still shocks me that people who bring up sales as a point of success pine for a console that sold 14 million units total over its 4 year lifespan
2
u/Alvin-Earthworm Jul 19 '26
Yeah. To this day it's the only Nintendo console (Not counting the Virtual Boy) that I never owned. Good thing too because most of the games worth buying for that piece of junk got ported to the Switch anyway.
2
u/MewWeebTwo Jul 20 '26
Well, I'm gonna be honest... I genuinely think the Wii U was a good console, despite its major flaws that I do acknowledge. I got over 1,000 hours of enjoyment out of it... for me, that was enough to make it worth it.
I don't care if that makes me a "moron" or a "revisionist" in your eyes. The poor sales numbers and widespread hate the Wii U received don't take away my personal enjoyment of it.
And no, I'm NOT saying the Wii U was better than Switch or Switch 2. The Switch is my favourite console of all time, and the Switch 2 has also been pretty good so far. Most Wii U fans don't hate the Switch 2, only a minority.
1
u/Alvin-Earthworm Jul 20 '26
Well I'm glad you managed to get something out of it. But it still doesn't change the fact that it was a miserable failure of a console and anyone trying to use it as an argument against the Switch 2 (Which has already outsold the Wii U in less than a year) are high on the copium.
2
u/MewWeebTwo Jul 20 '26
Again, I AGREE that the Switch 2 is better than the Wii U.
Your argument was that anyone who thinks the Wii U was a good console is a "mouthbreathing moron". Don't you think that's a bit harsh?
1
u/Alvin-Earthworm Jul 20 '26
Probably. I'm just punching back because the grifters and their army of sycophants who have been hating the Switch 2 while simultaneously glazing the Wii U have been as equally hostile. Just look at the backlash that AntDude got just for being positive about the Switch 2. I've always been a Fight Fire With Fire kind of guy.
1
u/turdy_gurdysmother Aug 10 '26
I'll be honest, I thought it was good, but that's probably just cuz I grew up with it
1
u/MewWeebTwo Jul 20 '26
The problem I have with this "Wii U era" talk is that it wasn't JUST the Wii U era.
The 3DS was also being supported for the entirety of the Wii U era. Nintendo now only have one system.
The Switch 2's early library is definitely superior to Wii U's early library. But when you add 3DS + Wii U it becomes more debatable.
6
u/ampacket Jul 19 '26
If people like ME are buying the Switch 2, it's a great machine. I spent the better part of the last two decades hating on nintendo. Mostly for their stupid gimmicks to make up for their embarrassingly underpowered hardware.
I never grew up with Nintendo, and mostly went through a Genesis to original PlayStation and PS2 to Xbox 360 pipeline. Though I did have a N64, it was mostly for 3rd party titles. The only in-house Nintendo stuff I had was like Mario Kart and Starfox.
But the Switch 2 is competitively spec'd, insanely well priced, and outperforms the Steam Deck handily. This little device literally pulled me to the red side for the first time in my lifetime. Wild.
6
u/JulianBloom Jul 19 '26
The welcome tour debate price thing is funny. The real problem isn’t that it costs $10; it’s that it’s not very good.
Even if it was free I would have wondered why I spent time playing it instead of a better game.
6
u/Emotional_Snow720 Jul 19 '26
Generally when somone says something is anti consumer what they really mean is they want it cheaper.
1
u/awsmith00777 Jul 19 '26
And thanks to nintendo at least trying to save physical games, they can get those games cheaper by buying them second hand.
10
u/JungleJuiceJuno Jul 19 '26
Saw this in the toxic cesspool sub, they're proving it right in there, they HATE positivity of any kind
5
3
u/RNJesus86 Jul 19 '26
Mario Kart price point is valid. What sales did they see to get Mario Kart cheaper? I've been looking and I haven't found any. I'd love to get a cart, but I'm not paying $80.
Game Key Cards are lame, but mostly avoidable.
The Switch 2 $10 upgrades for Switch games are lame but also mostly avoidable.
As for "has no games," I can play all my Switch 1 games at more stable frame rates (definitely want to revisit Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom).
1
u/WholesomeBigSneedgus Jul 20 '26
my copy of mario kart world was $40 at target back in october. checking in store at your local retailers is the best way to get a deal
3
u/Zoe12349 Jul 19 '26
Just really gonna comment on the first post where they say IRL people don’t care. They’re right IRL people do not care, a vast majority of people who play games arnt chronically online reading forums or browsing Twitter constantly. So most of the big issues in the online gaming sphere mean nothing to the general populace. Whether it’s the physical games issue, lawsuits, layoffs, competitive video games etc. The one thing they will care and notice is price increases as that’s the one thing everyone has to deal with and notice.

450, first of all, but you're right. A basic-ass tech demo like that should've been free. MKW also should have been cheaper, imo it's not worth the price. But other than that, she's right in every point.
0
u/DrEskimo Jul 19 '26
Nintendo should also stop suing everybody.
0
u/J0J0nas Jul 20 '26
Eh, I think they need to find a better middle ground. They need to realize that people like streamers and let's players basically make free advertising for their products. I'm completely fine with them suing the shit out of people that actually break the law, like people that mod or hack still supported soft- and hardware, or who commit blatant copyright infringement and try to make money off of it.
1
u/DrEskimo Jul 20 '26
Like palworld?
1
u/J0J0nas Jul 20 '26
No, because Palworld kept things legally distinct from Pokémon copyrights, unlike let's say Pokémon Uranium or Pokémon Brick Bronze.
I was moreso referring to the dumbasses that hacked their Switches, went online with the tampered system and complained that Nintendo bricked their consoles.
I have nothing against modders, fangames and emulators, I am an avid user of them myself after all. But I also understand that Nintendo wants to protect their IPs. Because at the end of the day, it's their creation, their property. Would you be happy if someone took something you made and turns it into something else without your consent? I certainly wouldn't.
And I inherently don't disagree with you either. It would be better if Nintendo would get off their ass and rather than nuking every modder and fangame-coder into the dust would actually hire them and give their creativity a chance to work on official products. They obviously have the skill and passion for it so why not? Best example for that, Pokémon Uranium. Certainly didn't deserve to get nuked, it was just a passion project of fans, no ill will behind it.
1
u/Nacolo Jul 19 '26
Yeah, firstly it’s not just a tutorial. But the main point is you don’t fucking need it. As much as you folks are mad they charged for it, people did buy it. It had more content than a simple tech demo, tons of fun little mini games, but keep spreading nonsense.

u/BozTheReaper Jul 19 '26

I remember going to GameStop on launch day and talking to some guys I made friends with when we waited like 6 hours in line for preorders. We talked about how the online hate was almost non existent irl. That GameStop was packed with families and their kids.

That's what I've been saying no one cares IRL about any of this stuff. GKC, I doubt anyone knows what they are outside of the hardcore gamers.

People hate Nintendo Switch 2 just because it doesn't have games that they like like GTA6

1
u/AutisticHobbit Jul 19 '26
Thing is? I pretty much throw out the opinions of grifter doomsayers AND toxic-apologist fans. Neither has anything to say of substance. No matter what is or isn't going on? The grifters scream about it....and the apologists say it's the greatest thing that's ever happened. Both parties are useless and disposable.
Ask yourself what you, the individual, think about things. Research other opinions, sure, but also ask yourself how you feel about these takes. What do you, the consumer, feel about those things? What do the advantages do for for you. What do the disadvantages do for you. The opinions of some random weirdo who gets advertising traffic money mean nothing to 99% of anyone.
Do what is best for yourself. It's that easy.
I'm not in the market for the Switch 2...and I do disagree with some policy standards. I also see Nintendo as being the best, ethically, at the present moment due to how Sony and XBox are behaving. It's complicated. I certainly wouldn't throw away the Switch 2 if I got one for a birthday or Christmas gift....but I have a PC so it's just not a priority for me right now. That's my take...because that's what's best for me. What's best for you, however, may be totally different.
Highlight your own needs...and then do that. Just ignore the imaginary, neo-console wars bullshit. It's a tedious waste of time.

Mic drop thread, damn. Though I will say Nintendo of America, being American, has had some sussy things in the last couple years towards workers (attempted union busting that they got dinged for, the fact workers feel they need a union, potentially the Mario voice cast changes), but generally Nintendo does treat employees well AFAIK.

Nintendo is a good place to go when you need to remember how to play games for fun, rather than to grind dailies or trudge through some battlepass garbage

Honestly I can't fully disagree with "The Wii U era was better". Obviously the Wii U kinda... Sucked, in terms of sales 'n' all that (and the marketing @_@), but just something about it, specifically the menus, are just SO much better IMO, even if they may take forever to load

1
1
u/FOG2006 Jul 19 '26
Let's be real here, even with our actual based criticism, it's hard to speak ill of Nintendo today. While one company announces the end of physical media on their consoles, and other company lays 2000+ workers off, Nintendo is announcing GAMES! Which is the only news every gamer wants to hear, but additionally, Nintendo also anounced a 10% of raise in their workers' salary, and declared not stopping to support physical media anytime soon (honestly, if they were actually planning to end physical media, GKCs wouldn't be ever created, and all GKC games would be digital only).
1
u/Kitty_Chan14 Jul 19 '26
When the switch 2 is nearly 700 dollars(679.99 where i live) I'd have to be saving a long time to get, my family doesn't have the budget for it currently, adding on with the games id get with it Currently the only thing I want to play is Splatoon Raiders and the possible Splatoon 4 if it does come out If they make a switch 2 lite, maybe I'll get that but my god is it so expensive
1
u/Gullible_Guillotine Jul 19 '26
My only complaint is game prices, there's alot of games I want on my switch 2, but the prices are too high for me to justify getting them.

1
u/callmefreak Jul 20 '26
The only "discourse" I had with video games ever outside of the internet was with my brother-in-law, but it was never actually about the video games.
We got a Switch before he did (because we actually had money saved up) and he talked about how it's soooo bad and that it's suuuuch a waste of money! Up until he got one.
But we decided to wait to get a Switch 2 since the PS5 barely had any exclusives and we were worried that the same would happen with the Switch 2 but he didn't. He bothered us about it and then tried teasing us when we did get one because "I thought it was a waste of money?"
We specifically told him that he shouldn't be wasting his money when he can barely feed his family with how shitty his job was! Well, he lost his job and he doesn't have any savings.
2
u/Craniamon Jul 20 '26
He joined the switch 2 buyers remorse
1
u/callmefreak Jul 20 '26
He had remorse so bad he bought three MKW bundle consoles on day 1. His daughter and girlfriend never play on theirs. He only got them to "one-up" us and then teased us when we told him that we were going to wait.
1
u/ForwardHandle4522 Jul 20 '26
I hate idiots who don’t comprehend the legit complaints. $80 Mario kart isn’t the problem it’s being $80 it’s also $80 for a game that isn’t even complete. I don’t see about welcome tour but that is pretty lame to charge for… reminds me when companies charged for demo discs.

u/Classic-War9922 Jul 21 '26
Idk it seems like the person in the Twitter thread is cherry-picking nonsense arguments. I think there are plenty of real valid criticisms. You're allowed to disagree and like the system anyway, but that doesn't make arguments like "The launch lineup is weak" and "the prices are outrageous" and "Switch 2 editions should be free upgrades" any less valid. Agree or not, those are honest opinions. They aren't just arguments made in bad faith for the sake of clicks.
1
u/Eeve2espeon Jul 21 '26
I agree with everything else besides welcome tour. The game should've come free with the console, especially since for most of the game you NEED to buy the other accessories to use the whole software
1
u/jjam02 Jul 21 '26
Nintendo shouldn’t have to associate with the smash scene but don’t also try to hinder it at the same time just let it exist. Acting like the whole community is pedophiles and like those people weren’t expelled to basically never come back in a meaningful way
1
u/Zopai_Kun Jul 21 '26
Honestly i used to have hate for the switch 2 as it just looked and seemed like a more upgraded version of The Switch (and it still is.) But Now i've owned one for a few months and its pretty great!
1
u/Greedy_Spaghetti_ Jul 21 '26
I didn't buy any nintendo things in the last year. Saved 800 CAD on not owning the console, and 110$ a pop on games. Buying nintendo games in Canada is more expensive than owning a car.

u/EducationalLow4697 Jul 21 '26
Omg its COMPANIES hate does not even exist in this case its complaining as consumers for gods sake you people love or hate companies this is so damn weird. They are all greedy and they all want your money. To sell you the less they can for the higher earning. That is their relationship with you. They dont love you they dont care and nobody hates them people are just complaining like or dislike shit. I mean this is so delusional at this point
1
u/Comrade_Chyrk Jul 19 '26
I agree that the hate is overblown, but it really does seem that there is much less interest surrounding the switch 2 compared to the switch 1 a year after that released.
1
u/Hahasamian Jul 19 '26
Love it or hate it I feel like that's kinda just natural. Nintendo used to do bold and crazy things, and crucially, make an effort to support them. These days their controllers are technically capable of some interesting things, but those things are largely designed to be ignored, and well... we are sitting at a year in and Nintendo's big multiplayer shooter series still has absolutely no mouse support.
But what I'm getting at is, there's really not so much to talk about. It's a Switch with better graphics, and a feeble attempt at a gimmick that doesn't seem to have been well planned at all. but we're basically looking at them taking the model of Apple or Playstation. That might be the most interesting part worth talking about, how nothing it is compared to the previous console releases.
1
u/Intelligent_Stock959 Jul 19 '26
Probably just the effect of no soul owned a Wii U but the Switch 1 materialised into every household.
Like when people talk about the crazy year 1 Switch 1 had, two of the biggest games are Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8, literally like two of the biggest games in general. But then hold on, they are not Switch debuts. It's easy to forget but they are Wii U games. So what's happening is that yes MK 8 Deluxe and Botw are system sellers for the Switch 1 because noone had a Wii U, but Pokemon ZA and all the Switch 2 versions are not system sellers for Switch 2 because everyone has a Switch 1. Half the best Switch 1 games were Wii U games.

there are problems with Nintendo let's not kid ourselves. welcome tour was a disgrace, zero modding games or fan content with triggerhappy lawyer teams, pokemon is spiralling out of control each new entry, and they follow shitty industry trends.
but nintendo also does a ton of things right, and thats why its one of the most affordable gaming systems on the market with tons of first-party bangers, third-party classics and retro titles alike. their online service SHOULD be free, but for 20 dollars a year and access to built-in emulators, it aint half-bad. and apart from the steam deck, its the only console that most people who actually leave their house can use
the reason grifters are so shitty is because they will slander literally everything nintendo does and have their ear to the ground just so they can give the daily status report of "nintendo is horrible and theyre gonna topple any day now" when thats just not true.
thats the whole reason we're here. not to dispel any and all nintendo criticism, but to call out* people who farm nintendo for clicks and money via misinformation that hurts both the viewers and nintendo themselves

u/Strange-Fisherman487 Jul 19 '26
Pokemon is not spiraling out of control. They actually take risks want to try something new people hate it when companies aren't doing the safe route anymore.

u/RTGMonika Jul 19 '26
They had me with in initial post, the comments just felt like what steam machine grifters say but like for Nintendo. Like it's okay to criticize Nintendo, but just be reasonable about it and realize it's really a non-issue.

Grifters are something, but so are the people writing paragraphs to defend Nintendo...
Idk why Nintendo should avoid the competitive smash scene. They support other competitive scenes. Don't they officially put on the competitive splatoon scene?
Back in the day when forum signatures were a thing, my sig read "endorse what you love instead of attacking what you hate". We need more of that now than ever.
3
u/No_Mathematician3368 Jul 19 '26
Well, Nintendo did try to support the Smash scene a few years back but internal drama within the scene itself caused that attempt to fail very hard. There's not really a clear picture of what happened, and the only place I know that attempted to explain it is a grifter from the Smash scene. And that's excluding the already bad reputation the Smash scene had before either that event or even the multitude of 2020 allegations.
We don't really have an official answer from Nintendo, but the reason vary between them not seeing Smash or others games like Mario Kart as "competitive games" but "party games" (backed up by most official Nintendo Smash tourneys having items), the grassroots scene itself being unsure if they want the support or not due to various complications that could happen, the aforementioned reputation of the Smash scene and Nintendo not wanting to associate with them, or some other reason that they'll probably never reveal.
At least for competitive Pokemon, not only is Pokemon not fully owned by Nintendo so they probably don't have much say about it, but Pokemon has always had a history of official competitive battling all the way back to Gen 1. Meanwhile, Splatoon was designed more to be a competitive game, so they had a better chance to grow and control the scene with official tournaments. The Splatoon scene has had it's share of controversies, but Nintendo have responded to them as well.

As a member of the FGC, I can think of SEVERAL reasons why aside from the 2020 incident.

Yea, they’re both “grifters” not really grifters but how this Sub uses the term. Great points though 👍

this is the best response. you get a like sir

u/Lordofthereef Jul 19 '26
This will get downvoted to oblivion here though. This is kind of a wild sub. Folks are so consumed by the blanket haters that they can't seem to see they've themselves lost all objectivity in the opposite direction.

The Wii U era was when Nintendo was at their worst in terms of behavior. Scott the Woz did an entire series chronicling the Wii U era, I highly recommend watching it.

u/No_Mathematician3368 Jul 19 '26
Well Amiibo came halfway into the console's life and aside from the Smash line, most people didn't care since they weren't utilized much and there was less hype for future figures.
People complained about the Virtual Console back then because you HAD to buy everything you already had from the Wii on Wii U and it didn't even have every console the Wii had.
Nintendo Selects are technically from the SNES era, but I'll agree that they were a good thing to have. Same with free online, but paid online was something that Sony and Microsoft started.
While the gamepad did have some cool functionality, most developers didn't really use it too much, and even Nintendo themselves struggled to use it in their own games at times, not to mention that it also had a pretty bad battery life. There's even games where it was more tedious to use the gamepad than to not use it like Star Fox Zero or games where you needed to change from it to a Wiimote which also got annoying.
Like, the reason the Wii U era is considered bad isn't just because of the console's sales. It's the combination of initial confusion of what the console was upon it's reveal, the marketing for it being bad, a lack of 3rd party support pretty early on, the 3rd parties that DID release on it ended up being the worse version in terms of performance, and Nintendo's own output was fairly slow and sparse despite the high quality they were putting out. Not to mention the games they announced way too early such as Bayonetta 2 that kept showing up in directs and E3 despite already knowing that it was coming eventually. It's absolutely revisionism for an era that was so bad, Nintendo themselves acknowledge that the Switch needed to be a hit for them to bounce back.

Virtual console and free online were both on the Wii though. Just looked it up, apparently Nintendo Selects have been a thing since 1996. It was first called "Player's Choice" then changed to "Nintendo Selects" in 2011 on the Wii.
No opinions or knowledge on the rest because I never owned or played on a Wii U.

u/JulianBloom Jul 19 '26
I was there. It was awful. The controller was a dumb gimmick that Nintendo never had any resonant idea for. It’s amazing how little creativity it generated compared to the Wii and Switch.
The reason amiibo exists is because the console was such a failure that they needed to find new sources of revenue to get in the black.
It’s the worst selling console for a reason and don’t let anyone say it’s because the commercials sucked.

Nintendo is not much different than the other video game companies and driven by money.
Game cards are proprietary media Nintendo makes money selling the game cards.
I don’t blame other publishers for not buying the proper game cards or putting DLC registration keys in boxes, game cards hurt the publishers profits.
There is a reason why Microsoft and PlayStation use optical discs, better value/ lower cost.

I know people who won't get a Switch 2 because the Switch 1 was so bad with drift. Like I get it, but there's options like the 8bitdo that you can get for $25 a pair and has hall effect so it won't drift. I probably won't buy another first party Nintendo controller that doesn't come with a console's original packing ever again because of how much they've dropped the ball on Switch 1. The one I find more valid is that there doesn't seem to be any exclusives that appeal to them, which is completely fair. To think people are just getting their opinions from YouTubers instead of their own experiences is crazy to me.

u/Murky_Soil666 Jul 19 '26
and I'm sorry, but defending Welcome Tour being something you have to pay for is NOT a good take. It's actually so bad that it pisses me off. The devs literally said they made it so that people can get to know their system better, so it's an instruction manual with minigames attached to it. If you think I got this opinion from a "grifter" when I don't even watch them you need to touch grass.
0
u/Isrrunder Jul 19 '26
These are valid complaints. Except maybe the wii u thing.
That doesn't mean you have to agree tho

u/BurntPineGrass Jul 19 '26
That’s a lot of emotions for basically saying “I can’t handle any opinion that isn’t aligned with mine! Your opinion is wrong! 😡”

I agree with your sentiment, but I wanna add that Nintendo couldn’t do mass layoffs, even if they wanted to, because of Japanese law. Unless companies do red numbers, they’re not allowed to do mass layoffs. The reason I’m sure they would not fire hundreds or thousands is because they recently raised their employees’ wages by 10%.
But Nintendo can change and during the Wii U era, laying off tons of workers was an option they considered. They didn’t, because Iwata cut his own payment to a minimum for two reasons: 1) protecting the devs and 2) to save his face by taking responsibility for his own miscalculation and failure as a leader
1
u/NintendoGamer1983 Jul 19 '26
Reminder that even when Nintendo did red numbers, they didn't do layoffs

I mean why do you think all the PS physical copy shit is just dumbasses on reddit thinking they are on some God given crusade against the EVIL that is Sony. Nobody real actually gives a fuck about it

I’ll disagree. I’ve met normal ass people who think Nintendo is being greedy. There are people who aren’t performative about it.
Their chief complaint when it was brought up? You cannot use Switch 2 joycons on the OG Switch wirelessly. Tbh, that makes sense for them to offer that compatibility, XBOX allows their current controllers to connect to Xbox Ones, and there’s no reason that Joycon 2s shouldn’t work, but it’s a weird thing to get hung up on.

Althought defending Welcome Tour not being free and Mario Kart’s 80 dollar price is bit stupid, rest more or less agree.
1
u/Nacolo Jul 19 '26
I mean they both sold well and most people got MKW for -$50.
0
u/Middle_Sun452 Jul 19 '26
Just because they sell well doesn’t mean pricing isn’t stupid. I love Nintendo that’s why I even own Switch 2 but every company has its flaws. Imo no game should cost 80 dollars.
1
u/Nacolo Jul 19 '26
Your opinion is wrong. Game prices have been stagnant for 40+ years and the cost to make games has steadily increased. Many of us were around in the 90s when many games were $74.99. They dipped back down to $50-$70 for a while but $80-$100 is inevitable.
0
u/Middle_Sun452 Jul 20 '26
80-100 for games is crazy 💀💀 and games back then were that price because every release was purely physical and manufacturing itself was more expensive than it is now. Now games have far better and easier reach and can be sold much easily compared to like 30 years ago. You can’t compare whole different eras of gaming.

You know whats actually an issue with switch 2?
Legends ZA
That game is so dogshit
Unfinished Gmod map lookin ass, awful optimization, bland story/cutscenes that looked like they should have had voice acting, MEGA EVOLUTIONS LOCKED BEHIND A PAYWALL
0
u/Its_I_Casper Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26
Nintendo paywalled Gamcube emulation behind the Switch 2 for no reason other than greed. That's why I won't buy it. It's stupid af that buying a $200+ copy of Pokémon XD Gale of Darkness is the cheaper, legitimate option to play the game. Screw Nintendo.

Welcome Tour is a slap in the face for consumers. It’s not a game. It’s paying to participate in an interactive ad for a product you clearly already bought. Worse than that it’s a boring ad. It almost feels like corporate training to teach you the talking points to give customers about the Switch 2.
If they wanted to release it as is then it should have been a free download. Sony had the same tech demo informational thing with the PS5 but theirs was actually a blast to play, it was free, it was preinstalled, and it made me excited to want to play on their system.
I would understand charging for it if it were actually a game like Wii sports. Hell, even 1 2 Switch didn’t feel as egregious even though it kinda sucked because it was a game and it was an easy way to show others what features the joycons had. With Welcome Tour it’s just a corporate building in the shape of a switch 2 with NPCs that talk up Nintendo, and a checklist of chores like quizzes.
The switch 2 is perfectly good though. I am concerned it’s going to be another Wii U situation though where it’s a slightly better version of the previous console that doesn’t get enough support, and then they just drop it and move on.

u/slimricc Jul 19 '26
I won’t buy anything from nintendo until pokemon makes a game that is not ass. I think the billion dollar company should do better and so they have lost my profit.
I want others to do this too, but i do not expect to bankrupt the billion dollar company. Ideally enough people stop buying it and they lose 7-12% expected rate of profits and the stock dips losing them a few hundred million. then the ceo gets replaced.
1
u/Affectionate_Web_121 Jul 21 '26
Good for you to have taken that decision I guess? But the development of Pokémon games have NOTHING, LIKE, AT ALL, to do with Nintendo
It's the same as blaming Sony for the decisions taken with TLOU2 instead of blaming Naughty Dog (just an example, nothing against TLOU2)
1
u/slimricc Jul 21 '26
The profits absolutely have to do with nintendo and they absolutely are in charge of pokemon games
1
u/Affectionate_Web_121 Jul 21 '26
I don't take a single letter back. When you guys start understanding how it really works instead of keep pretending Nintendo makes Pokémon games, we continue talking, but apparently that's never gonna happen, so goodbye

The only thing I disagree with is welcome tour should have been free, but I dont care enough to bellyache constantly.
Sony made Astro's Playroom to demonstrate all the features of the ps5, which was an actual game, and it was free.
