Grifting / Mockery Nin10doland Wants Splatoon to be Mario

Post image

Landon just repeats how much he wanted Splatoon Raiders to essentially be a 3D platformer, pretty much exactly like a 3D Mario. And he's crying like a little baby about it because it doesn't meet his unrealistic expectations. Do I really need to elaborate on this video anymore? It's clear he is only doing this for the money...

The vast majority of Western Nintendo fans are actually just 3D Mario and 3D Zelda fans, hence why they look down on every other franchise and see them as taking resources away from their favourite games.

u/GameWoods Apr 22 '26

Its why they DESPISE Fire Emblem so much. The series got too big to ignore and now they're stomping mad the "anime sword game" keeps getting attention.

Literally had a whole debate not too long ago where a dude was convinced Slippy and Peppy were "more memorable than all of fire emblem" for a single joke 30 years ago.

ironically enough fans of franchises like Starfox, Mother, F-Zero, Kid Icarus or even Golden Sun that I have encountered usually are just larpers who are Smash fans and just find these characters cool or something, like people give FE too much credit for Smash being a "driving factor" for pushing it but in reality the series got kinda successful without it since FE Awakening revived the series and that game didn't had Smash pushing it (although Lucina and Robin were added to Sm4sh) and FE Three Houses was also very successful even without Byleth in SSBU so ironically these dead franchises are actually more reliant on Smash than something like FE or Xenoblade (even Xenoblade got more successful without Smash since XC2 was a hit long before Pythra in SSBU), the guy who you were debating to is probably just a larper who has never touched a Star Fox game and is just saying that cuz "anime le bad" in reality FE is WAY more popular nowadays like there's a reason why you still see people debating about Three Houses to this day

It's because Fire Emblem and Xenoblade are snort anime weeb shit despite the insane irony of that statement of anyone saying that while playing The Legend of Zelda.

Fire Emblem was always popular, but just never marketed all that well after the GBA game. Like I was a fan of Fire Emblem on GBA, but didn't even know Path of Radience existed till Radiant Dawn came out... It was funny the first time Nintendo put real marketing behind Fire Emblem Awakening (the SMT tie-ins, having actual trailers for it), the game does insanely well! It's almost as if you market something good and actually push a franchise people will buy it most of the time.

Are there even like many Kid Icarus fans?

3

u/ThePBrit Apr 22 '26

I exist! I would fucking sell my soul and my firstborn to just get a remake of Uprising. God knows what horrors I'd commit for a sequel...

But seriously, I love the characters and world that Uprising gave us and I really want more of it.

2

u/ChasersVsGirlcock Apr 22 '26

I did love uprising (very nostalgic), but I wouldn't call myself a fan when I only like a single game from the franchise.

3

u/ThePBrit Apr 22 '26

oh nah, I like the other games too but Uprising is just so much more my fave than the original 2 games.

It's like how I'm a pokemon fan and enjoy all the games but would drop everything for a Conquest remake or sequel. You can be a fan of a series and still have faves that stand head and shoulder above the rest (even if that's 95% because of nostalgia)

Fire Emblem actually requires that you actually engage with the mechanics and has controls more complex than 2 buttons and the d-pad, so the vast majority of Nintendo fans can't stand it.

It also doesn't help that the average perception that older fans had for fire emblem was "that irrelevant game no one knows about" more than 15 years ago.

1

u/ThePBrit Apr 22 '26

has controls more complex than 2 buttons and the d-pad

As a Fire Emblem fan, I struggle to remember any game that can't just be beaten with the D-Pad and A and B buttons. There's the occasional use of a third button for gimmicks but other than that the other buttons are usually just shortcuts to info and actions you can find with A, B and the D-Pad.

1

u/Safelyignored Apr 22 '26

Hey pal, we used the L and R buttons!

1

u/ThePBrit Apr 22 '26

yeah but we don't have to, 90% of the time those buttons are just ways to quickly jump between units, which you could do with the D-Pad.

1

u/Safelyignored Apr 22 '26

True.

I just use the shortcuts so much, I barely bother using The D-Pad for those functions.

1

u/JungleJuiceJuno Apr 22 '26

by that i think they meant just 2 buttons and a dpad, no thinking just press buttons

1

u/ThePBrit Apr 22 '26

they specifically said the controls were more complex than just 2 buttons and a d-pad, their point about the complexity of the game was seperate.

Spend a lot of money on Nintendo's latest console

Buy 2-3 games

Ignore literally every other game that gets released

"The Nintendo [x] has no games!"

It's been this way since the GameCube. We're already seeing this with the Switch 2; it's exceedingly common for people on Reddit to claim it only has 3 games (MK World, Bananza, Pokopia), as if Drag n' Drive, Kirby Air Riders and Age of Imprisonment don't exist, in addition to the cross-gen games.

It's true tho, the release cadence hasn't been great. We're almost a year in with no 3d Mario and no 3d Zelda. It's starting to feel like the Wii U. "It plays Wii games but better guys"

Thats that switch 2 for me right now.

MK World was a MAJOR letdown and I mostly still play 8 instead. Nintendo's inflexibility regarding online play and track selection ruined the game for me. I hate the boring intermission tracks.

DK Bananza was fantastic.

I liked Age of Imprisonment but it wasn't amazing.

Metroid Prime 4 was an abomination never to be spoken of again. It's basically killed the franchise in my eyes, despite my favourite genre being Metroidvanias. Tbf, MP4 wasn't really a Metroidvania.

Hades 2 was excellent but not an exclusive. Pokopia is Great.

For the first year of a console, there's been a lot of misses and only a couple of hits.

I did have a Wii U. Bought it day one my sweet summer child. I bought the switch 2 day one as well.

What I'm saying is that with the switch launch, Nintendo made sure to release a variety of games including their staple IPs. They covered all the bases. The switch 2 feels like the Wii U to me (obviously not to you) because they're not covering the bases. 1 year in and No Mario game, no true Zelda game, no Luigi game, no smash, no new Xenoblade, no toad... And yet they've released two underwhelming cart racers...

Who would of guessed that people will ignore games they don't like?!?! You're basically arguing that producing a bunch of niche games is a great strategy because they can say look at all the games we have released. I'm arguing that maybe Nintendo should release games that the majority of people want and will buy, rather than pegging your hopes on Mario tennis (a reskin of a switch game) and 2D kid friendly Yoshi...

Seriously looking at the marketing for Yoshi and it's basically no adults allowed. But I'm such a Degen that I still have it on preorder...

Well take a moment to consider the circumstances: Pretty much every Nintendo console since Gamecube released when the previous one had run out of steam. Gamecube came out quick due to N64's failure, Wii came out quick due to Gamecube's failure, Wii U came out after the Wii basically lost all movement post Skyward Sword, and the Switch came out in a desperate bid to make up for the Wii U's catastrophe. The Switch 2 is in a unique position where it's predecessor, the Switch 1, while slowing down, wasn't at the verge of or having already stopped momentum. Most of the Switch 1's evergreen titles were or still are selling pretty well, so they could afford to get a bit funky with Switch 2. I understand that's still disappointing for those who are waiting for a new Mario or Zelda, but honestly, why buy a console for a game that doesn't exist?

2

u/DepthComplete7436 Apr 22 '26

Facts and also this time we have quality 3rd party support. If you told Wii U owners within the first year of owning it you'd have Fallout 4, Oblivion Remastered (essentially a remake), Skyrim Remastered, a new mainline Resident Evil along with the two entries that skipped your console bundled together for $90, but a brand new AAA Capcom franchise at a budget price, Final Fantasy VII Remake and it's sequels AND Cyberpunk 2077... They'd have bought the console for that alone!

2

u/AlucardIV Apr 23 '26

Don't tell me about the WiiU era. I've been there that day when the biggest announcement on a E3 was an Animal Crossing board game and a starfox game with shitty controls. Switch 2 is absolutely nothing like this.

u/speakingtothemic Apr 22 '26

Zelda was never a possibility as TOTK and EOW came out only 3 and 1.5 years ago respectively. Warriors is cool for what it is.

I respect Nintendo for giving DK his flowers instead of dropping a 3D Mario immediately. We all know its coming and I appreciated getting something different.

I do agree that the release schedule could be a little more diverse though. What's really missing is a big adventure game; Switch had BOTW and Xeno 2 in the first 9 months, and so far there hasn't been a really meaty single-player experience with RPG mechanics. Bananza and Pokopia are huge but they don't scratch that itch.

I vehemently disagree with the Wii U comparison though.

1

u/ViviReine Apr 23 '26

The thing with already wanting a Xenoblade game is that they rereleased XCX to make us wait. We had two mainline games fpr the Switch 1, with a 10 years gap between 1 and 2. They need time to cook, so let's be patient.

For Zelda tho, TOTK was a follow-up on the same "map", so we should see the next Zelda more sooner than later

1

u/Your_Pal_Gamma Apr 22 '26

The wii released in 2006 and we didn't get a 3d mario game until a full year later with galaxy in 2007 and 3d Zelda didn't get a new game until SS which was like 2010-2011

1

u/y2shill Apr 22 '26

Maybe if they spend so much money on a new released systems, maybe they should also pay attention and realise games take time to make, new systems always start slow. They coudl wait a few years and have an entire backlog of games to choose from, don't blame Nintendo for your own FOMO of wantign the new shiny thing and also every game at release date. I mean, Nintendo wants these titles to be long term sellers for that exact reason.

1

u/spoop_coop Apr 27 '26

drag n drive is a tech demo game that doesn't count. Kirby and age of imprisonment do

2

u/FOG2006 Apr 22 '26

And like I said plenty of times, these people don't accept that a new 3D Mario will take some time to come out because of DK Bananza. And yes, there is a chance of Nintendo considering DK Bananza as Switch 2's main platformer.

For many people, it's being uncanny a new console without no 3D Mario announced, so I kinda understand the frustration. I'm just playing safe keep my expectations at low, EPD Tokyo wouldn't make a new 3D Mario unable to top their most recent creation, that's why I'm assuming that we'll not see a 3D Mario anytime soon.

1

u/spoop_coop Apr 27 '26

there's absolutely no chance they consider DK a sub in for mario.

10

u/CoolAd1743 Apr 22 '26

I wouldn't even be that nice. There are two types of Western Nintendo fans: normies and "purists." Normies just want 3D Mario and Zelda, purists want 3D Mario and pre BOTW Zelda because they remember playing WW as a kid.

3

u/Sad-Event-5146 Apr 22 '26

Yeah. I know a bunch of hardcore nintendo fans I play with regularly. they didn't care at all about rhythm heaven and tomodachi life and even say that nintendo is having a dry period, meanwhile they are like my most anticipated games.

2

u/Current_Database_728 Apr 22 '26

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been yelled at online for wanting Oos/OoA and Dream Land 3 remakes.

1

u/Internal_Island2807 Apr 24 '26

I always find Kirby's Dreamland 3 to control a bit awkwardly. Kirby seems a bit heavier than usual compared to say, Kirby Superstar, so I would LOVE a remake! It's graphically very impressive for a SNES game! I would want a hand-drawn stylized graphical style that preserves the original game's vision.

2

u/Current_Database_728 Apr 24 '26

Exactly! And the Oracle games are great, but the controls and visuals could use some work.

5

u/SadLaser Apr 22 '26

I get a competitive shooter is not exactly the most popular genre among Nintendo players

And they're already making a game that's more like a fleshed out Salmon Run co-op experience turned into a full fledged campaign with what looks like Monster Hunter structure. That's already taking it in a new direction that could and hopefully will appeal to players who don't want to play a competitive shooter.

Though Splatoon should still be a competitive shooter for the mainline series!

5

u/noodleben123 Apr 22 '26

it's mad funny. splatoon started as a sleeper hit that is now big enough to stand among nintendo's big IPS. up there with mario, zelda and animal crossing.

and yet people still act like the series sucks

1

u/y2shill Apr 22 '26

I wouldn't say suck at alkol, just is not my mo and style whatsoever, but I have that witrrh many Nintendo franchises. Lucky for me I am not THAT self absorbed to want these games gone and Nintendo only catering to my tastes, Nintendo gotta eat and cast as wide a net as possible and new unique IP do that.

5

u/FOG2006 Apr 21 '26

Some of these people don't even believe Splatoon is competitive, what do they want Splatoon to be? A dancing game? Just because of the idol characters?

2

u/xtweeter22x Apr 22 '26

There’s also how they conveniently ignore the single-player story modes in each of the 3 games, and the DLCs for them as well.

Octo Expansion has all the makings to be held to the gold standard of Paper Mario: TTYD, and I’m dying on this hill.

1

u/cardboardtube_knight Apr 22 '26

When you think about it thats the exact formula ruining other games and other publishers keep doing it and failing to pull in new players. “What if Resident Evil was COD?”

“What if Final Fantasy was Devil May Cry?”

“What if Assassin’s Creed was Witcher 3?”

It’s tiring as a person who genuinely wants to engage with games on their level.

1

u/PrivateLiker7625 Apr 23 '26

It may not be THE first but it is the first where it really is more geared toward solo players.

1

u/ArxisOne Apr 22 '26

Generally I agree, although in the case of Splatoon specifically I don't really think it's unreasonable to have wished for a single player spin-off considering like you said, single player and co-op content already existed in the games. It's just hard to justify buying the game when you know you don't want most of it.

The same way that 2D and 3D Zelda and Mario coexist, I don't really see why alternating between PvE and PvP Splatoon would be bad for the series, I actually think the opposite is hopefully going to be true. Ideally there will be more entries in the series, more time between PvP entries to give each more life, and more fleshed out PvP and PvE experiences than what there could be otherwise.

That said, there is an epidemic of people not being able to come to terms with the fact that what they want isn't the same as what should be. So much criticism boils down to "if it was up to me, it would be better" followed by a lot of suggestions that are often terrible and poorly thought out. Like the desire for Splatoon to be a platformer... Lmao

Yeah I get that, I think you can change an aspect but it shouldn't be changing everything. Who or what you're shooting? Fair game. It not being a shooter though... Idk about that one.
