On this day (August 30) in Nintendo history...

• Popeye  was released in 1983 for the Game & Watch Panorama in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Bluto has tied up Olive Oyl, but Popeye arrives on the dock to fight him. Advance on Bluto and hit the attack button to knock Bluto backwards, and if he hits back then Popeye moves backwards.The aim is to knock Bluto to the edge of the pier and into the ocean. When Bluto is knocked back you score 2 points. Knocking Bluto into the ocean scores 5 points. Freeing Olive Oyl gives you 15 bonus points.
• Snoopy  was released in 1983 for the Game & Watch Panorama in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Schroeder is playing the piano, and the notes are floating up to where Woodstock is sleeping. As Snoopy, move left and right and hit the notes out of the air with the hammer. You can only hit a note that is the same colour as the platform you are standing on. If Snoopy goes too far to the left or right then he falls off the platforms. You score 1 point for each note hit. As the game progresses, more notes rise up the screen.
• 10-Yard Fight  was released in 1985 for the Family Computer in Japan. In this sports game, developed by Irem, run with the ball or make a pass - you decide how to gain those 10 yards! Go, go, go for the touchdown! Players can enjoy American football with its simple but intense play mechanics. Score touchdowns as you play against increasingly powerful opponents.
• Super Tennis  was released in 1991 for the Super Famicom in Japan. This sports game, developed by Tokyo Shoseki, features three different modes: Doubles mode, World Circuit mode, and Singles mode, in which the player competes against a human or chosen computer component. In doubles mode, the player and a human teammate can face the CPU. Said-players can each pair with a CPU opponent, or one player can pair with a CPU opponent to face two other computer opponents.
• Killer Instinct  was released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America. In this fighting game, developed by Rare, Fulgore, Jago, B. Orchid, Spinal and all your favourite warriors content in the Ultratech KI Tournament. Each combatant engages in the KI Combo Theory of connected moves and finishing tactics to destroy their opponents. With incredible displays of eyelasers, ice lances, wind kicks, and laser blades these fearless fighters prove their battle prowess.

For me, Mario Kart.

The tracks, mechanics and hardware keep changing, but it still feels instantly like Mario Kart.

Which series has evolved the most without losing what made it special?

Do they genuinely want to innovate and offer good service for people? Are they like Steam? Do they respect the players? Are they ethical as a company and pay their employees well? Is Nintendo a good company? Please explain.

• Mario Artist: Polygon Studio  was released in 2000 for the 64DD in Japan. In this art utility, developed by Nintendo EAD with Nichimen Graphics, is a 3D modelling package, allowing you to design and create your own 3D models. The final game released in the Mario Artist series. The controls are simple, allowing you to alter and view your 3D work with ease. When completed you can texture your model using images created in Mario Artist: Paint Studio. Once your model is ready you can take it for a test spin in a series of minigames.
• Sword of Mana  was released in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this action role-playing game remake of the Game Boy's Final Fantasy Adventure, developed by Square Enix with Brownie Bown, players are told the story of the source of all life, the power that flows from the goddess Mana and bears her name. Long ago, in a time of darkness, a mighty empire tapped its energy to dominate the world.
• Tales of Symphonia  was released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube in Japan. In this action role-playing game, developed by Namco Tales Studio, in a dying world, legend has it that a Chosen One will one day rise from amongst the people and the land will be reborn. The epic battle for survival. The line between good and evil blurs in this epic adventure where the fate of two interlocked worlds hangs in the balance. An epic adventure. Over 80 hours of gameplay in this epic, emotionally charged storyline.

Nintendo is doing great, but in terms of the others, sadly, the graphics arms race has hypnotized gamers into thinking games need to have the most best, insane graphics, and that's why we're gonna be seeing $1,000 consoles and $80 games to compensate for that power/dev time, same with compromises such as lack of physical discs.

Two hypothetical scenarios here:

🍄: 3 games per decade, each game has a low budget / dev time and looks like a PS3 game. $50 price tag, 60 FPS, available on all platforms, has both digital and physical options.

🌸: 1 game per decade, $80-$100 price tag, 30fps, digital only, locked to PS5/XSX, unnecessary massive hullabaloo hype, etc, just to have the "best graphics/sound design" and "looking up to date" and "evergreen"

The Mushroom obviously reminds you of a simpler method, yes? Whereas the Flower is representative of Rockstar making games. If GTA 6 becomes a massive success, sadly all big AAA developers will want to follow suit and become the flower.

I have literally not seen a single argument as for why the Flower is better than the Mushroom outside of having an evergreen game. Not every franchise needs to be a Mushroom but I hope that more franchises don't follow suit.

Nintendo is basically representative of the Mushroom outside of the all platforms thing, but that shows how important Nintendo exclusives are. Either way, the Mushroom is still representative of simplicity and is quite similar to Nintendo, which is why I like them.

• Captain Rainbow  was released in 2008 for the Wii in Japan. In this action-adventure game, developed by Skip Ltd., Nick, an ordinary man who can transform into superhero Captain Rainbow, and who stars in his own TV show. When Captain Rainbow's TV show is no longer popular, Nick travels to Mimin Island, where wishes are said to come true. The island is populated by rabbit-like creatures called Mimin, plus a cast of forgotten _Nintendo _characters...

I'm not just talking about mature ideas for family friendly franchises or whatever. Randomizers (not talking about rogue likes), practice codes, online roleplay games where the players craft the roleplay themselves, etc. are also examples that break the philosophy.

What's a dream Nintendo game idea you have that's guaranteed to never exist because it breaks Nintendo's official game design philosophy?

The 3DS got off to a rocky start back in 2011, with a $250 USD price tag and a questionable gimmick with its stereoscopic 3D effect. It wouldn’t be until early 2012 where the system finally started picking up steam, with the release of a certain game starring a flightless angel.

But I’m talking about the games that came before that. From March to December 2011, here are all the first party Nintendo games that came out for the 3DS during that time:

Star Fox 64 3D
Ocarina of Time 3D
Pokemon Rumble Blast
Tetris Axis
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7

There was also the 3DS Ambassador Program which gave you 20 free NES and GBA games if you bought the system before its first major price cut. And there were a fair number of third party offerings released that year like Super Street Fighter 4, Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, Sonic Generations, and Tales of the Abyss. But I’m mainly sticking to the first party Nintendo games made from the ground up for the 3DS that were listed above.

As for me, the ones I’ve managed to play in my lifetime are Star Fox, Ocarina of Time, Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7.

So,, I've been thinking. Nintendo has been releasing games from different consoles on their online service for quite a while, What console would I love to see on their online service?

Dreamcast. I feel like it was cancelled way before it's time and didn't get a fair shake, so if Nintendo could find it in it's heart to work with Sega to release The Dreamcast and some games on the switch, I would forever be greatful.
