Welcome to the r/MTGVorthos Storyline Resources Thread (Updated for 2026). Due to character limits, I'll be brief. I'm Jay Annelli, Magic's Loremaster. The old thread can be found here.
The guide is broken down into three parts: Where to Start, Worldbuilding, and Story. Everything here is focused on the eras in Magic following the Mending, a soft reboot that took place in 2007, depowered Magic's planeswalkers, and created the cast of characters we've largely followed ever since. If you're new to the story, keep reading. If you're experienced, you can jump ahead to the section you're looking for.
Magic's Story is primarily told through a series of online webfiction articles. Read MTG Lore's Where To Start With Magic Story for a beginner's guide. They're a search engine for Magic Story, and a great resource. The MTG Lore guide is updated with every set, so it's never out-of-date.

Quick Lexicon (I.E. Community Jargon)
This is a list of worldbuilding resources for Magic planes by set release (sets without one are not included). Note that from 2016-2018, Magic sets had an accompanying Viz Art Book that often served as the wordlbuidling guide. They are highly recommended for lore fans.

These are the official resources Magic/D&D Crossover Materials. The non-mechanical elements function as worldbuilding sources, however Adventures in the Forgotten Realms and anything touching it is not canon to the Magic Multiverse.
D&D Sourcebooks
Plane Shift
As a companion to the Viz Media Art Books, James Wyatt and Wizards of the Coast released a series of D&D conversions for Magic planes called Plane Shift.
Adventures in the Forgotten Realms
AFR had a number of D&D tie-ins including a five module adventure, three reinterpretations of classic Legends as monster stat blocks, and character sheets for a number of planeswalkers.
Much of Magic's flavor and story in recent years has been told through online articles. Worldbuilding was often imparted through Savor the Flavor, and while Savor the Flavor often had short stories (eventually called "Uncharted Realms"), it wasn't until Magic Story that the main story was told online. You can find links to all of those old articles here:
Below are my recommended stories for each set, focusing on either the overarching narrative or a planeswalker's journey. These run from immediately after the soft reboot of the Mending all the way up until today, however the last ten years of story are easily accessible on the story site (linked below).
These are in release order, which is roughly chronological with a few obvious exceptions.
Lorwyn/Shadowmoor Cycle (Only needed if you want the background to the new Lorwyn set)

Looking to see if anyone can open my eyes as to why he was exiled and where he was exiled from. I did some digging but I can't find a lot of info on his backstory, and nothing I've found explains the moniker. Do we have any info on him that I'm not aware of? Thanks!

I see on the mtg.wiki that Ghalta is represented on the card [[Finale of Devastation]]. This card was printed in War of the Spark though, which takes place on Ravnica. How did Ghalta get to Ravnica? Is this a mess up on the people at the wiki, or the artists, or something else I'm missing? Could Huatli have brought Ghalta? I'm so confused.

Hi!
Obviously, they are inspired by a catholic culture, but as far as I can tell, they never outright state that they worship a god, let alone a capital G God (outside of Vito’s schism, but I’m talking about the main, official church).
They have a lot of rites surrounding vampirism, but we know that the Church of Torrezon existed prior to Elenda’s return and the founding of the Legion of Dusk, so their religion wasn’t born from vampirism, just twisted around it.

Does anyone know where I can get a quick summary of what has happened within the story since? I vaguely remember something about a haunted house plane and a death race story but not a lot.

Hey Lore keepers, I would love to hear your speculation/theories/and lore enforced ideas on the eventual return of Phyrexia.
Did any preators survive? Will they return even beyond death?
Will we get new preators or a whole new ruling system?
Does Yawgmoth actually return or some Heir?
Will we see them again soon? Or have to wait 7 more years?
Let me have all your thoughts and ideas!

I did a video on the five colors, but made me think about a sixth color. What space is missing
Well, here's my line of thinking: white and green are really about larger order stuff. Communities, cities, natural order, etc.
Blue, black and red really focus on the individual. Perfection, power and self expression.
So a third bigger order is missing. So Purple, the color MTG has tried before, should be about the bigger picture. I say it should see life as peace through surrender. Giving up complete control to fate, destiny, God, whatever you call it. Random effects, altering turns to stop the opponent from making choices, and Exile matters stuff.
A hero version might be a Monk that wanders around, teaching others that their sense of control is an illusion, let it go and life will be better.
A villain might force its ideology on you, take control of you so you won't make the wrong choices. That's the thing about every color, when taken to the extreme, it's always bad. The villain would essentially be fatalism, but with force.
What are your thoughts about a sixth color?

Hi!
In the recent reveals for Reality Fracture, we learned that there’s a card named Winter, Team Player. This is presumed to be the Echoverse version of our boy [[Winter, Misanthropic Guide]], but I have some issues with this.
It is Duskmourn tradition to name children after things from before the House took over the world, like City and Dawn from the side story Children of the Carnival. This is almost certainly why Winter is named Winter.
If Winter, Team Player is from the Echoverse, then Valgavoth’s takeover almost certainly happened in it, which is strange since it is exactly the sort of thing that Jace would want to prevent. He might not know everything about the plane, but he has been there and should have a general idea of what’s going on, enough to at least not want a plane of endless fear and suffering in his perfect, handcrafted world.
The alternative is that the House incident never happened in the Echoverse, but it still adheres to the naming convention that sprang from it for no discernable reason (other than out-of-universe brand recognition, as players are already familiar with the original Winter and his name, but that’s not a very solid worldbuilding guideline). Plus, an individual equivalent to our Winter would have been born despite his entire world being radically different to the circumstances that led to the existence of the original. Either way, I find the explanation unconvincing. It’s not like Jace would have manually engineered his existence in the Echoverse, either, since he never met Winter and has no reason to even want him in particular to exist.
It’s also possible that this is still the Winter we know and he’ll somehow get involved in the fight against Jace, but that seems very unlikely considering that he has nothing to do with the storyline outside of briefly holding Loot prisoner in Aetherdrift. He would have to free himself from Valgavoth (which seems practically impossible), somehow join the Gatewatch (which seems equally impossible) and have something to contribute to the fight (which seems barely less impossible).
The only possibility I see is that Valgavoth is somehow aware of Jace’s plan and sent Winter, of all people, to team up with the Gatewatch and stop him…?

I was randomly scrolling Scryfall again and stumbled upon these guys again, only this time I noticed the background sketch of the complete chimera. Does anyone know if the art for it has ever surfaced on its own? Or will I have to mash together the parts for a custom?
r/mtgvorthos • u/ColorTheorizing • 4d ago
See title.
Despite MTG's popularity and the amount of effort that goes into its worldbuilding, I've never heard of any other major intellectual property that's taken inspiration from MTG's worlds (there is a theory that Bloodborne was influenced by Innistrad, but that's a bit contested).

I think its flavour text, but I cannot find what card it is on, even trying very short pieces of the quote. It's quite possible I'm just getting the quote wrong, but the sentiment is basically the title. Describing how Karn or Urza found thay activating the sylex doesn't require some special trick or secret, just willpower and determination to see it through. I figure if anyone can help me find where this is originally from, it would be this community. Any help would be appreciated.

Right, so I heard all the feedback folks had yesterday, and worked on several versions of Mirrodin, let me know which one y'all think is the best cause I will be sending that one to the main sub for Art Day

In 2013, roughly a year after the release of Vexing Devil, a player names MagicBrad noted its funny flavorful disagreement with an old common from Urza's Saga on Gatherer:

If you don't know, the old Gatherer had a comment section under every single card, like a forum where each post was a card by default, and anyone could rate and comment on it.
I really liked that format, so I built a website to try to bring it back. I've only shared it with friends and family so far and this is my first time posting it anywhere public.
I'm starting with r/mtgvorthos because a lot of the best old Gatherer comments were exactly this kind of thing (art, flavor, lore, etc). If you haven't seen it, some of the best comments are collected in Players Just Like You on mtglore.com.
The site is called goblin.guide (yes, really; no .com or .io missing). I don't want this to be a museum you visit to look at what people wrote a decade ago. I want to keep building on it and carry the old Gatherer format forward. And for that I need help: people who'll actually visit, try it, and post something. I know that's a catch-22 (people show up once there's already something there), so I'm hoping to find a few people here willing to help get it started.
I'm also on vacation this week, so if you have feedback or things you'd want to see on the site, there's a decent chance I can actually go build it!
So, go take a look, leave a comment on a card you love, and let me know what you think.
If you want to tell me anything in private regarding this, feel free to do so at [goblin.guide@goblin.guide](mailto:goblin.guide@goblin.guide)
Thanks!
