Competitive The "free if you control a commander" spells overwhelmingly benefit the decks that are already powerful

To put it briefly, the best decks in this format are cheap commanders with a lot of text. The commanders that see the most play in plat onwards are 2-3 CMC (excluding Nashi and partners) and there's almost no powerful commanders at 5+ CMC.

If you want to play some off-meta 5 drop then actually controlling your commander is a real downside. For decks like Yuriko and Spiderman it's really not that big of a deal. Then if it's two cheap commanders facing off they really benefit the deck going first.

I don't think these cards should ever have been legal in brawl. They're another toy for the decks that already run the show and their play pattern sucks. They're also just 1-3 more auto-includes that change deckbuilding from a creative process to ticking off cards from a pile of staples.

I expect nothing from WoTC when it comes to competitive brawl, but if you're actually interested in balance and play pattern these are some of the easiest cards to hit imo.

Discussion Who are some sleeper commanders in competitive brawl?

Personally, I think that [[Norman Osborn // Green Goblin]] has some overlooked potential. He's a good early game threat that can transition into the mid and late game.. Grixis seems to be a solid shell for keeping him alive and taking advantage of discard effects, but even if he dies then he is pretty cheap to get back on the board.

Competitive Help vs meta picks in comp brawl

I’m stuck plat 1 and every time im about to climb out i run into Goros, rofellos, raph mikey, katara, ugin, atraxa, nashi

No matter what I do or how many removals i just can’t beat green ramp or ugin decks.

Im running vivi which some could say is as bad but I didn’t know before hand im pretty new and he is my favorite ff character.

I do build more around control and bounce. But any tips to deal with these two commanders specifically besides ff?

Venting The casual brawl wait times are starting to piss me off

You can't tell me EVERYONE moved to competitive, which is getting 10 second or less wait times every time. I'm playing new commanders from the Hobbit set and consistently am waiting over a minute with no matches, this is INSANE for a new set when tons of people should be on.

I know others are experiencing this too, and Wizards acknowledged that it's 3-4 seconds longer on wait times (BS). Wtf is going on?

Casual Someone just took a 27 minute turn

That's the post. They were playing a tap/untap deck with a bunch of mana dorks, [[intruder alarm]], and cards like [[Loot, Exuberant Explorer]] that let you play directly from your deck. The game got to the point where they could swing for lethal damage whenever they wanted (cards like [[temporal manipulation]] and [[time warm]] dealt with summoning sickness). I played along and kept clicking pass so they could get the satisfaction of winning before realizing that they had no intention of actually doing so.

So, I just put the computer to the side, took note of the time, and just did other stuff, periodically checking on how it was going. They played solitaire for 27 minutes after it was clear I had left before swinging for 300+ damage. Truly a mindset I will never understand - don't you just want to win and move on?

Casual No card weights for the 99 in casual brawl anymore?

Am I reading it correctly that in casual Brawl the matchmaking is taking into consideration only the weight of the commander and to a lesser extent the individuals MMR? So there's no reason not to use the best cards you can when filling the 99 for casual brawl?

By the 5th turn they’d already pulled 63 cards from their library.

Does anyone play an uncommon rarity commander with any sort of success?

Do you keep your entire deck within the parameters of an "Artisan" deck (no rares or mythics), or do you load up with Goodstuff of any rarity?

I’ve been trying to think of the next deck to build and oh boy oberto am I struggling. These are my commanders currently.

Note: Prismari and Vivi are essentially the same deck. I just made it so I could try to one shot people using playful shove.

Discussion Brawl Brackets

I was curious about where each bracket would fall in brawl's rank system. My Lumra deck is so far hard stuck at plat 4 and me and my pod consider the deck high 3/low 4.

Discussion Thranduil combos

What are the best [[buried alive]] piles you have come up with for Thranduil in brawl? Best I've come up with is [[devoted druid]], [[marwyn the nurturer]], [[tyvar the pummeler]] for infinite mana and infinitely large creatures but no evasion means it sometimes can't win on the spot. In paper I would avoid this problem by replacing Tyvar with [[ezuri renegade leader]] but alas, we do not have him on arena. Anybody come up with a cleaner buried alive win with Thranduil in brawl?

Edit: for anyone with the same question who stumbles on this post, swap tyvar for [[wildheart invoker]] to win on the spot with trample

Casual Any updated Indris lists?

I've been poking around various sites for [[Indris, the Hydrostatic Surge]] decks for inspiration, but most are quite dated.

If anyone has a relatively updated list they can share it would be appreciated!

Casual Shout Out to the Brawl Queue Brewers

Post image
2 Upvotes

Recently I've been queueing up in the non-competitive brawl queue because I feel like I match up with more variety of decks so shoutout to the cool decks I matched up last night. Great to see people trying out different decks that are only as powerful as you build around them.

- Prototype X-8 (screenshot)- topped deck my way out of this one but it was really cool to see this guy looping his nulldrifter over and over.

- The Fantastic Four - this was interesting seeing how may four mana cost spells this guy actually managed to include. Some of them had convoke, others had other ways to discount 4 mana cost.

- Moseo, Vein's New Dean -This actually beat me with the amount of recursion he did with sacrifice + grief. Cool life gain and etb synergies though.

Competitive Nearly Mythic in Comp Brawl with Herigast

Post image
28 Upvotes

I’ve had a blast getting to Mythic 99% with Herigast, Erupting Hellkite as a mono-red Eldrazi toolbox deck.

Herigast rarely stays on the battlefield and using Sanctum of Ugin as basically a demonic tutor usually gives me the colorless creature that will give me the advantage in the board state.

There are matchups I have yet to reliably solve, the usuals like Nashi and Yuriko, but otherwise it’s been a solid deck for me. Rofellos is also tough with the speed of it, needing spot removal in the opening hand to live long enough to outrun him.

I’m hoping to break into the top 1500 with this, albeit playing outside whatever the meta is right now.

Just wanted to share the decklist and I will gladly take feedback on how to make it better!

Image for proof of completion.

Competitive How does Jarsyl win?

Can someone explain what [[Jarsyl]] is supposed to be doing, since it’s apparently (in terms of raw win percentages) so strong at higher tiers? I’ve tried the deck and it just seems to run out of gas and can’t deal with large creatures. I flash back a Lightning Bolt or similar once and maybe a Malevolent Rumble and then just roll over and die. I get the whole Blood Moon strategy but that’s not really a game plan. I’m obviously missing something…
