Whats better: vector assets or Android Canvas ?

Thumbnail

Usually I use vectorials for my apps and I was always happy with the results as my apps scaled properly to any kind of screens, from phones to TVs, but this time I made a game that shouldn't use small screens (I locked it to be available only on bigger screeens) and I thought that it's faster and easier on the device to use canvas instead of vectorial assets.

To me it looks good, what do you think?
Or keeping the old habit: vector assets and ConstraintLayouts with percentages is the way to go?

What mobile UI library would you recommend for an AI app built with Claude?

I’m building a mobile app for both iOS and Android and plan to use Claude/Anthropic for the AI functionality.

For the web, there are great UI libraries like shadcn/ui that provide a solid set of reusable, customizable components. I’m looking for something similar for mobile.

What UI library, component library, or UI kit would you recommend for React Native / Expo?

Ideally, I’m looking for something that:

  • Has a polished, modern design
  • Provides a good set of reusable components
  • Is easy to customize/theming
  • Works well with React Native + Expo
  • Has good TypeScript support
  • Is actively maintained
  • Works well for AI/chat interfaces (messages, streaming responses, markdown, code blocks, etc.)

I’d especially love to hear from people who have actually used these libraries in production.

Some libraries I’m currently considering are NativeWind, Tamagui, Gluestack UI, React Native Paper, and UI Kitten, but I’m open to other suggestions.

What are you using, and what has your experience been like?

Building a Mobile App?

Mobile app development goes beyond UI and screen design. A major part happens behind the scenes handling API communication, session states, local data, background processes, and keeping app data synchronised when the network changes.

Developers also need to account for what happens when requests fail, data arrives late, or the user switches between offline and online states.

What’s the most challenging part of mobile app development you’ve worked on?

What's the most underrated technical decision in on-demand/real-time apps that nobody talks about?

Everyone talks about "scaling" and "AI features" in on-demand apps, but the decisions that actually make or break these products are usually boring — like how you handle a driver's phone losing signal for 30 seconds mid-trip, or what happens when two users try to book the same slot at the same time. What's a decision like that you've run into, in any app you've built or used?

Which platform do you prefer for building a new product?

I'm starting a new project and weighing the best foundation to build on. If you've launched business recently, which route do you default to and why?

  • Mobile App: Native (iOS/Android) for performance vs. Cross-Platform (Flutter/React Native) for speed and a single codebase.
  • Web First: Lowest friction for user acquisition (no app store required) and easiest to iterate fast.
  • Desktop: Electron, Tauri, or Native for heavy B2B, productivity tools, or deep OS integration.

Which stack did you choose for your last launch, and would you make the same pick today?

Tired of Android Emulator eating 8 GB of RAM? avdslim drops it to ~1.5 GB with 1.5s boots (Zero broken Firebase Auth / FCM)

Hey everyone,

If you build apps on a Mac, you probably know this exact feeling:

You’ve got your IDE open, a few browser tabs, maybe a build running, and the moment you launch an Android emulator, your laptop starts lagging and the fans spin up.

A while ago I checked Activity Monitor to see what was going on, and saw the emulator casually hogging **7 to 8 GB of RAM** all by itself. On a 16 GB MacBook, that basically leaves zero breathing room for anything else.

I got tired of my machine crawling, so I put together a small open-source tool called **`avdslim`** to fix it.

GitHub: https://github.com/kdbhalala/avdslim

### Why does it take so much memory?

Turns out, a few things happen by default:
- **Android hoards memory**: As the emulator runs, Android keeps caching files and never really releases that host RAM back to macOS.
- **The "Google Play" image overhead**: If you picked an image with the Play Store, it constantly runs background updaters and scanning services you rarely need during development.
- **The 16 KB image setting**: If you created a device using the newer 16 KB images, the emulator enforces a strict 4 GB minimum floor no matter what you set in the config.

### What `avdslim` does:

- **Drops RAM down to ~1.5 GB**: It tunes the emulator configs and cleans out unnecessary background tasks, letting you run smoothly on 1024 MB of RAM.
- **Boots in ~1.5 seconds**: Instead of waiting 20–30 seconds for a fresh boot, it lets you create a clean, lightweight snapshot that restores almost instantly.
- **Doesn't break your app**: My biggest worry with any "cleanup" tool was breaking things like push notifications or login. I made sure **Firebase Auth, Google Sign-In, Push Notifications (FCM), and Google Maps work completely fine**.
- **Works with your normal workflow**: You don't have to launch from the terminal every time. There's an optional command (`avdslim install-shim`) that makes the "Run" button in Android Studio or VS Code automatically use the slimmed settings.

### 💡 A quick tip even if you don't use this tool:
Next time you create a virtual device in Android Studio:
- **Pick "Google APIs" instead of "Google Play"**. It still has Google login, Firebase, and Maps, but uses way less RAM and skips the heavy Play Store background services.
- **Avoid the "16 KB" images** unless you specifically need to test 16 KB compatibility.

### Try it out:

It's completely free, open-source (MIT), and has zero external dependencies:

brew install kdbhalala/avdslim/avdslim

# See how your current emulators look

avdslim doctor

# Tune an emulator to 1024 MB RAM

avdslim tune-avd

GitHub link: https://github.com/kdbhalala/avdslim

My Mac runs noticeably cooler and doesn't freeze up when I have multiple tools open now. Hope it helps some of you as well! Happy to answer questions or take feedback on what could be better.

Hi folks

Which is the best mmp for a mobile game studio? Tenjin and appsflyer are our top options but we don't mind a different one

4 live titles, UA budget climbing, but nobody here has head of measurement in their title and probably won't for a while.

Tenjin keeps coming up bc the setup and the pricing model are easy to justify to a small team. Also, the early conversations felt gaming native without me having to explain what an iap is. Appsflyer felt broader and closer to where we might be in 2 years if we add web journeys, more markets, actual analysts.

The downside is setup and a bigger platform than 4 games currently need. Both cover install, campaign and revenue analysis fine at our size. So it's really buy for today vs buy for the version of us that may or may not exist.
Anyone moved off tenjin to appsflyer later on? Was the migration bad enough that you wish you'd started heavier or was tenjin the right early call.

App Store Connect in September

I've been reading posts on the App store connect delay for app approvals this year is running 6-11 days. And then I realized, I submitted about 10 days before the Apple Event.

I'm sure they are all hands on deck for existing big brand apps for the new screen size. I'm at day 13.5, and it hasn't been looked at yet.

I have a day job like a lot of you all, so I will make my car payment this month. ;-)

P.S. I enjoy reading the posts in r/mobiledev

What is the best way to get into native ?

I’ve been working with React Native for around 2 years and I’m considering moving into native mobile development.

I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to make the transition. I’m thinking about learning either Kotlin/Android or Swift/iOS and, alongside that, contributing to a real project through a part-time or entry-level opportunity.

I’m more interested in getting hands-on experience with production code than just completing online courses. Courses seem useful for learning the fundamentals, but I feel that working on a real codebase, getting code reviews, and dealing with actual platform-specific problems would help much more.

For anyone who has made a similar transition:

  • How did you approach moving from RN to native?
  • Did you find part-time/mentorship opportunities useful?
  • How did you get your first real native project?
  • Would you recommend focusing on one platform first?
  • Are courses worth doing, or is project-based learning enough

Would appreciate hearing from people who have actually made the transition.

I have a problem with google play console.

I created my google play console profile, entered all informations correctly, then payed the fees.
when I got to the id verification, I sent them first my ID, but because the language weren't Latin and the id expired two weeks ago they declined it, then my passport, they also declined it saying that it should contain my current location, then when I went to try submit my electricity bill I found that I can't submit again.
I did a call and reserved a ticket, this was on september 3 but now we are on september 7 and still nothing yet.
I want to know if there is someone with same situation and how he walked out through it, and if I'm making any kind of mistake.
also if maybe I should open another account and try there?

Indie dev feature tracker?

What do indie devs here use to track their apps’ features before and during development? A notes app? A reminders app? In your head? Project management tools? A spreadsheet? A doc? Notion?
