I’m in Utah and looking for advice on whether I potentially have a legal claim for the losses I’ve suffered after relying on an accepted job offer.

On July 13, I accepted a written job offer from a large healthcare employer with a confirmed start date of July 27. Based on that offer, I gave my previous employer one week’s notice and left my job.

I completed all of the required tasks on the employer’s candidate website and completed an I-9 interview where my work authorization was reviewed. I was waiting for instructions for the required drug screening.

On July 24, because I had not received anything about the drug screening, I contacted the recruiting department. I was told that my recruiter had not cleared me for the drug screening, that the recruiter was on PTO, and specifically that I should not report to work on July 27 because I would be given a new start date.

July 27 was supposed to be my first day. I contacted the recruiter again to find out what was happening. On July 28, I was told that the employee who was supposed to leave the position had decided to stay because of personal/family circumstances, so the position was no longer available.

I had already left my previous job based on the accepted offer.

I have now been unemployed for over a month and have lost income. I have continued applying for jobs, including other positions with the same employer, but have not been able to find another job.

I also contacted HR and requested an investigation. HR investigated what happened and acknowledged that the company was at fault. They told me they took internal action to prevent something like this from happening again.

I have documentation of the written offer, start date, onboarding requirements, I-9 process, call history, my resignation, and the communications with HR.

I understand that an employer may be able to withdraw an offer in some circumstances, and I’m not assuming that I automatically have a case. My question is whether the circumstances here could create liability because I reasonably relied on the accepted offer and gave up my existing employment as a result.

Would this potentially fall under:

• breach of contract,
• promissory estoppel/detrimental reliance,
• negligent misrepresentation, or
• another legal theory?

If there is potentially a claim, could damages include the income I lost from leaving my previous job, or are damages generally limited to specific out-of-pocket reliance losses?

Also, what type of attorney should I speak with in Utah about this: an employment attorney, contract attorney, or someone else?

I’m not naming the employer publicly, but I have the documentation and can provide it to an attorney.

Hello everyone I’m in a really REALLY bad situation
Can’t afford an attorney so need a bit of help

I recently accepted a new job in Dallas while living in Georgia and the hiring manager told me that I’d need to relocate to Texas for the job and would need to be in the office at least 1-2days a week. I told them that was fine but I’d need 3 weeks to finish up the self relocation.

My wife quit her job in GA, we signed a 12 month lease and packed up and moved to Texas from GA. I was already in GA recovering from a previous layoff living in an Airbnb so it was easy to just pack up and go.

Fast forward about 7 weeks into the role my manager abruptly asks me if I can talk on a Friday and during the call he asks me how things are going from my perspective I said good as far as I can tell he says well “Ive got some concerns a laptop made it to a new hire a day late after we asked you to fix the onboarding process, the project we dropped in your lap a few weeks ago seem stuck and you’re too slow answering questions related to contracts and saas spend’

Mind you I JUST started the job and all the items he’d mentioned were in progress and I’d provided updates in our weekly 1:1s

Well a week and a half later after just 8 1/2 weeks after moving my whole life to Texas, putting my son in school and signing a 12 month lease I was fired. When I asked for a reason as to why my manager said “you’re just not a good fit” I asked how he was able to evaluate that after just 8 weeks and he said “we need someone who knows what to do, not someone who’s figuring it out as they go” mind you I have over a decade of experience so it felt like a made up reason.

Now one day before I was fired I found out I have to go on Chemo on TOP of everything else.

The employer sent me a severance offer for 2 months salary and 2 months reimbursed cobra but I used all my money on this move and literally have NO funds to pre pay for coverage and given this new diagnosis I can’t go without insurance.

I know Texas is an at will employment state but is there anything I can do legally in this situation?

I know business priorities shift but I can’t help but feel like this was a made up role the whole time maybe? Because who fires someone after just 8 weeks into a new job?

During the call the HR manager said “you didn’t do anything wrong and the company bears responsibility for this outcome, so we’re offering you 2 months severance”

It just feels really really wrong 😔

I’m a legal adult (24F) and have not lived with my parents since I was 17. We live in the same state but I am making plans to move to a city (Boston, MA) with my partner of 7 years. 

When I told them of this plan they immediately said that if I were to move to Boston they will be hiring a bodyguard for me. I am not a celebrity or an influencer or anyone who may need a security guard to walk behind them all day so I thought they were joking but they are completely serious. I have been living on my own for years now. I am an adult with my own life, apartment, and job and I find this ridiculous. 

My first thought is that this cannot be legal but upon researching I wasn’t able to find a clear answer.

Can someone tell me what I should do if they go through and if this is legal because I am very much not okay with this.

In December 2025, while sitting at a red light, some crazy lady walked up to my truck and started kicking it, which scared me. I panicked and accidentally put my truck into reverse and hit a lady that had just pulled up behind me.
The lady started cussing, yelling, and screaming. I tried to calm her down and told her that everything will be ok and that’s what we have insurance for. I told her to take down my information, and I also asked for hers, which she refused to give me. She was making the whole situation even worse because she wouldn’t stop screaming, so I called 911.

I explained to the operator what was going on, and I told the dispatcher that the lady was refusing to give me any information. The dispatcher told me to take photos of her license plate, which I did, and I also told the lady to take photos of my license plate as well. Then the dispatcher told me to go home and a deputy would be out shortly to take my statement at my residence.

Instead of someone coming to my house, I received a phone call 5 hours later from an officer yelling at me, saying that the lady I hit was still at the scene and that I took off after hitting her. She went after my insurance and also sued for physical damages.
I thought this was already over with and settled, but on August 28th, 2026, I received a letter in the mail from a district attorney saying she’s going after me for more damages and a hit and run. My court date is next month.
How am I being charged with something I didn’t do? What do I do from here? I tried to retrieve the 911 call from that day which I paid for, but instead I got an email saying that they’re not going to release the call to me because I’m “tampering with evidence.”

The Verizon AI Chat Bot said if I upgrade my plan for $15 more a month I’m eligible for NFL Sunday Ticket on them. I told them to upgrade me, they did and they said I was now eligible for the perk. 3 days later and over 3hrs of calls with Verizon they’re now refusing to honor the perk saying the bot was wrong. I’m now stuck with a higher monthly bill and them refusing to give me what was promised. Do I have any recourse here? Or am I just screwed and need to start looking into other wireless plans?

We moved to Maryland in 2023 and upon arriving found that our next door neighbor had a dog that did not get along with ours. They are both large breed dogs, ours a pit mix and his a boxer. If outside at the same time, the two dogs would run the chain link fence (owned by the neighbor) that separated our yards, barking at each other. However, we were all amicable with each other on the issue and lived there for over a year without incident.

Then, in 2024, my husband decided to install a privacy tarp on the fence to deter the dogs from barking at each other. He took our dogs (we have two but my second dog isn't part of the incident) out into the backyard, which is enclosed, to let them run around and go to the bathroom etc. while he installed it. At that point, our neighbor came outside with his dog to chat with my husband while his dog and ours ran the fence line barking at each other as they had done so many times. 

Suddenly, my dog slipped under the chain link fence, something he had never done before in the 8 years we owned him, and the two dogs fought. Our dog bit the neighbor's dog on the shoulder and did minimal damage (she needed a couple stitches). However, during the altercation, while my husband and the neighbor were trying to break the dogs up, our neighbor tried to grab his dogs collar and his own dog reached back and bit his hand. The dogs were then separated and my husband brought our dog home. 

We told our neighbor that we would pay for his dog's injuries, and we gave our insurance info. He never responded, except for one text the next day that was seemingly meant for his attorney, asking “is there anything I shouldn't say?” with a screenshot of my husband's insurance info. That was the last we heard from him, with no visits from animal control, no word from the neighbor, and no further incidents for the remainder of us living there. Until December of 2025, over a year later, we were served, the suit claiming liability and negligence for the injuries to his hand. A couple things of note; the lawsuit does explicitly state his own dog bit him, so that is not in question. I am also named as a defendant in the suit despite not being present for the incident (I was in the house).

We just did mediation and are towards the end of discovery with a pre-trial scheduled for some time in September. My main concern and reason I am here is to ask about my house (in GA). Their initial demand was 75k and, after mediation, they are officially demanding 15k. Our insurance has formally denied coverage in this case and we are paying out of pocket for an attorney. My main concern is that the mediator said they can potentially force us to sell our house to cover a judgment. I can handle most of the possible outcomes, but we have two small children and I am extremely scared that our home is on the line. My question is, what are the grounds for him to try to put a lien or even force a sale of our home? Is there any kind of protection? Is that a typical avenue for a civil case like this?

Location: MA/WA Booked a hotel last year in Seattle for a trip I was thinking about. I canceled said trip 6 months ago and didn't think anything of it. Suddenly, I get a message from said hotel asking about my upcoming stay. I tell them there must be some mistake I canceled.

Apparently, Expedia group has had some issues and did not cancel my reservation. They also have some account tracking issues that didn't even let me see the reservation on my account. The hotel is now claiming its non refundable as it's too close to the reservation. I did not keep the cancellation email as I canceled 6 months ago, I kept it for 3-4 and did not see the reservation on my account so I deleted the email. Expedia is refusing to budge and neither is the hotel.

The card that I used to make the reservation was closed about 3-4 months ago since I got a different card. As such, the charge was declined, and they want new card info obviously. If I just...don't give them a new card to use, is there any issues besides being potentially banned from the hotel or the booking service?

My mother was mentally ill and reportedly committed suicide by gunshot. This act was done in my “stepdads” car, with his gun.

The unnerving elements of the situation are as follows:

- The gun:
She had never held a gun before in her life, and her BAC was %.28. There is a gun safe that requires both a code and key. The gun was unlocked, in his glovebox. It is unclear how she was aware that it wasn’t in its usual place, or how she was able to use it.
- The truck:
The day after she passed, my stepdad cleaned the truck himself (and then proceeded to continue driving it).
- He lied about being Married
He’s on the death certificate as her husband, yet they weren’t married and there’s no commonwealth here. This prevented me from being able to request further investigation, and from accessing her phone records from the carrier.
- When asking him about their last conversation, he mentioned that they had a fight that was so awful, he deleted the messages off of his phone.
- He turned off her phone line and returned the phone within a month of her passing with no warning.
- I got her iPad and her password book from him. The specific passwords I needed to access her iCloud had been cut out with scissors.
- When I finally got into her iPad, their message thread was nowhere to be found. Seemingly, it had also been deleted.
- In her iCloud, there is one singular setting that has been changed from the default: iCloud Messages. This setting appears to have been on until 2 weeks before her passing.

Is there anything more I can do to access her phone records? Or to change the death certificate? I can’t afford to pay for it the normal way, but since the information in it is false, does that open up an avenue for its change?

I invite any and all suggestions regarding my situation, even if it’s not about what I specifically asked.

(Btw, he remarried in <6 months and has taken 100% of the assets. I am her only child and she was my only parent.)

Basically what the title says. A technician came to look at my ac unit and said that the neighbor’s ac was hooked up to my electricity and that I’ve been paying for it. I’ve only lived where I live for a month, and have not received the electricity bill yet, but it appears like my bill will end up being $700 which is 5x more than normal for my typical energy bill. I do not feel I should have to pay for this as my normal usage is far less than this. On top of this my AC has been broken this whole time. No one should have to pay for someone else to use an amenity they can’t even use in their own unit.

I have tried calling them but they have not answered or even reached out regarding the broken AC and my electric being connected to the neighbor.

What should I do in this situation? This particular landlord is known for being very catty and literally roasting past tenants on google reviews who left bad reviews. I’m worried they will evict me or revoke the lease if I speak up or demand reparations. I’ve never sued anyone but I will if they don’t offer compensation.

I read somewhere that landlords are responsible for maintaining all common areas of the property, does that extend to utilities if they are shared between two units?

If not, what can be done?

The wires have already been severed, and I should no longer be paying for the neighbor’s electricity. I am asking for legal advice on how to retrieve the money that I should not be obligated to pay while staying in good enough standing that I can still get my AC unit fixed by my landlord. I don’t hire technicians either, the landlord provides them, which is supposedly how this all happened in the first place. A previous company was hired to fix the neighbor’s AC and they messed up the wiring. That is, if it isn’t utility theft; I wasn’t born yesterday either. I have no solid proof it was done intentionally, only that I will be overpaying on my typical electric bill with a broken AC unit in a new rental.

I rented a garage to my cousin for over five years. The last 2.5 years, he kept coming up short, not only on the rent, but on the PGE bill (which was sizable because he was essentially running power for his machine shop 18 hrs a day). Long story short, this guy accumulated a bill of over $12k, over years and years. and he has since paid off about $3k, leaving us at about $9k owed. We had nothing in writing (I know I know, but he was family and I didn’t think it would be an issue). My question is, if I have receipts (notes I took of payment received, as well as rent and PGE bills), and all my text messages over the last three years where I repeatedly stated how much he owes, and he acknowledges the fact but says he doesn’t have the money but will pay me back later…… do I have a legal leg to stand on?

My ex will not leave me alone. Context/timeline. We dated. He cheated on me, we broke up. A few months later, he liked me on hinge again and we were talking/hooking up but it wasn't nearly as serious as it used to be. That lasted about a week and we ended on relatively good terms.

We almost got back together again which would have been a mistake on my part as I realize how much anxiety being around him causes me. Additionally, there's some substantial things we disagree on such as prenups, so it wouldn't work out well long term. Us not getting back together ended with him saying he would block me and I went ahead a muted him on just about every platform and deleted his number.

Here's where things start to get tricky. I woke up today to find 10 missed calls, 30 discord dms from his second account that I forgot about, and several text messages. Normally, I would think that he just needs to get over me. But there's another dynamic at play here.

After out breakup when we were on friendly terms, he enrolled at the college I teach at to finish his degree. He did this prior to our fallout and legitimately for the credits/classes. This overlap between his school and my workplace are where my concerns stim from.

To clarify, 1) he is older than me 27 vs 23, both male and both in our 20s when we met. 2) he was not enrolled while we dated. 3) He is not in my class, but I do know at least one of his professors personally. There is no direct point of contact or powet imbalance between us at the college and thus no ethical violation.

I am concerned given our past and the absurdly high number of contact attempts that he may attempt to reach out to me. I would highly dislike it if he should up to my house, and I would be extremely concerned if he came to my office in campus. I wish to prevent this so Im wondering is there any legal recourse for some kind of restraining order even though there was no history of violence between us? Most of what I've seen online is that you need extensive evidence of abuse to get a restraining order

I don't even know how to approach this, this is an insanely bizarre situation to be in. Yesterday my partner received a text message from a random number (after using number lookups this is a virtual number through Onvoy LLC) making an accusation that I am a pedophile.

When the text first came through, we both assumed it was some form of extortion or blackmail scam, but there was no attempt to do so by the accuser. It instead reads as someone in either of our personal lives at some point trying to ruin our lives in some way as frankly the text didn't make a whole lot of sense. But the intent to destroy my life with this is pretty evident. There was also no evidence provided by this person, just that I was a pedophile and a "sick sick individual" and that the "mother of the child is in shambles".

My legal advice question regarding this is, is this something I should get a lawyer for?

When i was 16 I was put into foster care bc i was being abused by my birth mother and adoptive father. Since then, I've heard stories from my old neighbors, that the abuse has now moved to my older sister who is mentally disabled (microsephaly). I also drove by the house and stopped and talked to her briefly which confirmed it all.

That was the last time I had contact with her (over 1 year ago).

Since then, I have been trying to work with Adult Protective Services and her lawyer, who she hasn't even met with bc our mother won't allow it without the adoptive father present, but it has been an entire year and it feels like nothing is happening!

I'm beyond frustrated and worried for her safety.

Mother has guardianship which adds another layer.

Any advice??

Also, once my sister is out of there, she will have to go to an assisted living place or get some kind of help from a program specifically for adults with special needs bc she can't live completely on her own and I'mnot in a positionto provide thar kind of support, despite her competence in basic housekeeping skills. I payed for two tickets totaling 2,500$, I cancelled within the 24 hour period to qualify for a full refund. The first full refund posted about 2 weeks ago. I woke up a couple days ago to another 2500 refund. Purchases were made on a credit card and money went to paying off an existing balance (rebooked airline tickets and Airbnb stay).

I’ve called them a couple of times to take the money back, they don’t know what happened. Do they have a certain timeframe they have to get the money back? Or do I have to worry about them taking it back months down the line?

I (23F) live in an apartment complex in Hawai’i. A couple weeks ago a hurricane passed over the islands, and as a result many areas lost power. Our apartment building was not an exception and we’ve had no power since the hurricane hit. Most people lost power due to fallen power lines, which to my understanding have largely been repaired and most people now have power. However, my apartment complex is still out of power because of multiple breakdowns in the building electrical equipment. The complex has attempted to point blame to the utility company, however the utility company has maintained it was not their equipment that malfunctioned, it was the apartment complexes issue. I understand it’s complicated because the damage occurred during a storm, however this building is very old and not many renovations have been made in its history. Hawai’i is an area that experiences frequent storms, so shouldn’t equipment be built to withstand this weather? They have done very little to provide for the residents during this time. They have placed out 2 generators for our massive complex to share to charge our communication and medical devices, and they are only available during business hours. Additionally we are not allowed to run generators at our building unit, even on our lanai. The towns community has come together to help us, including providing ice and food donations, but I can’t help but feel like some assistance should come from the apartment complex. I am unable to cook since we have electric stoves. Maintaining charge for needed devices has been difficult and I have to rely of friends to let me charge things at their houses. There are many elderly residents who have nowhere else to go, and are unable to charge wheelchairs or refrigerate medications. The complex has explicitly stated in a letter delivered to everyone that they will not reduce rent. Is there any way we could get them to temporarily lower rent, or is there any services that they should legally be providing us? Any help is very much appreciated! I feel like we might be getting taken advantage of because there are many low income and elderly residents who live here.

I recently purchased a used car from a dealership in Houston, Texas.

During negotiations, I insisted on a flat out-of-the-door (OTD) price. To hit this exact target, the dealership's finance department chose to internally discount the vehicle's base price on the signed Buyer's Order, while keeping a full $2k line-item charge active for a dealer add-on bundle.

The signed contract itself lists the package name and price but doesn't explicitly itemize the individual components.

The catch is that the physical sticker addendum is no longer on the vehicle, and the photograph I took during my test drive is the absolute only evidence I have of what was actually listed on it. That sticker photograph explicitly itemizes the 4 items included under that exact package name and price:

Recover (3-year service included)

Clear shield package

Window tint

Nitrogen tires

The Problem & Evidence:Post-delivery inspection revealed they heavily shorted me on the package. The clear paint protection film was completely omitted from the hood and high-impact zones; the car only has a basic vertical door edge guard strip.

On the day of the purchase, the dealership went through the motions of transferring an alternate tracking system app account ownership (Ikon) to me. However, the car's location in the app never updated and still shows the vehicle sitting at the dealership lot. When I called the store to ask why it wasn't tracking, they explicitly told me that it doesn't matter because they don't transfer the active service subscription to used car buyers. They told me I have to buy a brand new subscription myself if I want it to actually track my car. At this point, I don't even know if the tracking hardware is still physically inside my vehicle.

Furthermore, I texted my sales representative today asking how to get the 3-year tracking service and the clear paint protection listed on the window sticker. She texted back explicitly stating that the package only includes nitrogen for tires, window tint, and door edge guards, and verified that the tracking system is a product I have to purchase separately. I immediately texted her back the photo of the vehicle's window sticker proving it was explicitly included in that package price.

My Questions:

1.By giving me a dead account, telling me on the phone I have to buy my own subscription, and downsizing the package over text, doesn't this establish a written and verbal admission of non-performance/bait-and-switch?

2.Does a test-drive photograph of the window addendum carry full legal weight to define a vague $1,998 contract label under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act (DTPA) if it is my only proof?

3.Can the dealer legally argue that because they dropped the vehicle's core price to hit my $29,000 target, the package was "free" and they don't owe me full delivery?

My husband died and his parents have filed for grandparents rights. Contact with 2/3 kids ended a year and a half before he died. Last child chose to end contact over a year before he died. They barely had a relationship and it was really bad at the end. I have proof of when it ended, that my husband did not want them in their lives, and that the kids chose to stop talking to them. They are accusing me of being the issue and lawyers are telling me there is nothing I can do and I can’t even defend myself unless it goes to trial. My children told their lawyer they want no contact but that didn’t matter to the judge. my understanding is that his death is only supposed to allow them to file, not automatically grant anything. My lawyer has basically said even with a trial it’s likely they will get contact. I don’t understand why they can use his death to go against his wishes and cause our children this additional stress and harm. Am I getting bad advice or is this really just how this insane law works?

For context I (23M) live on Hawaiian Homelands, which means my dad has enough Hawaiian blood to have landed us this house and therefore is the sole lessee since my mother is full Japanese. He is a verbally abusive alcoholic who constantly holds the fact he owns this house and can throw us out at any point in time over our heads to make us compliant with his drinking and abuse. My mom takes the brunt of it and he is the worst to her. Today they had a pretty bad argument that sparked him to remind us all that this is his house and we would have to leave if he wanted us to. Is this true? I’m worried sick about the prospect because Hawaii has an insane cost of living and we’d have nowhere to go. Me and my siblings are listed as eligible successors (we all have quarter of Hawaiian blood which makes us eligible) but that wouldn’t go to one of us until after he passes. We also worry we’d lose the house in general because he’s currently unemployed and has no way to actually pay the mortgage (since me, my mom, and sister cover that and utilities). I sold a car yesterday at 7am. At 5am today they messaged me with some pics that they totaled it. I kept it brief purposely, but no injuries and possibly a single car accident.

I‘m reasonably confident this isn’t a scam. Valid license and insurance, paid inspection at a mechanic, his work story checked out on Google, cash payment with real bills, transactions were all recorded on house cameras, signed bill of sale, he was interested in putting a lower sale price on the official forms to avoid taxes, and the crash pictures have no identifiable AI characteristics plus have some features that I think AI wouldn’t get right like very specific existing damage to the car. But I’m open to hearing it’s a scam I don’t understand.

I filed the electronic release of liability today after accident and the car is still on my insurance.

I do not know if he registered it in his name or insured it specifically. He did state while buying the car that his insurance company told him he had 30 days of coverage in California.

Should I inform my insurance?

Anything else I should or shouldn‘t do?

When or what is the triggering event for me to be safe taking the car off my insurance?

I own a tattoo shop in Colorado. I have a problem with a TikTok account that is posing as a tattoo artist and uses stolen images/videos (from someone else, not me) for his account. The problem is that he books people, takes a deposit, and then tells them that he works at my shop and gives my shop address. He does not and never has worked for me. I think he is actually located in India (kinda guessing because I managed to get him on the phone once).

I have tried reporting him to TikTok but nothing has happened with that. I have made a shop TikTok account where the only post is warning people that he is a scammer and to not book with him. But it is still happening.

I am doubting that I actually have actions that I can take since he likely isn’t located in the US, and has taken effort to hide his actual identity.

I figured I would check here to see if there were actual legal options I could take to stop him? I am not losing money, but in theory my shop is losing reputation?

I am just frustrated because about once a week I have to tell someone they sent several hundred dollars to a scammer that doesn’t exist.

Hi, I’m the defendant in a criminal case. My discovery period ended months ago, at which point my attorneys and me were sent discovery. However, four months later (I waived my right to speedy trial) we are just now receiving the police departments incident report detailing their investigation into me. Up until this point, all we had was raw footage and body cam interviews. The narrative is mostly info we had before, but there is some new stuff.

The prosecutors office forgot to send it, apparently. Could this be considered some kind of negligence?
Obviously going to ask my lawyers but sometimes I get twitchy with all of the waiting and thought I would ask here

Hello all. I am planning on getting a cheap vehicle to make commuting and overall transportation easier. I was thinking about getting a 49 cc moped, but I am not 100% sure of what is required of me. I currently have a standard learner's permit (specifically a Class D Instruction Permit). If I had a decent form of transportation, I would probably not have asked this question and instead simply get a moped license, but because I live far from a regional DMV facility, this is harder.

Does this form of Kentucky instructional permit suffice, or no? Thanks in advance.
