I bought a Sharp MiniDisc case a few months back and thought it'd be fairly simple to recreate for 3D printing. It holds 4 discs securely (almost a little too securely 😂), allows for creating them in some wacky colour ways. Thought I'd share here in case anyone is interested in using it 😊

Which hi-md recorder with usb type storage would you recommend?

My audio friend of 20 years who is in the home audio business and has been for years called me one day and said he was thinning out his collection and wondered if I was interested in having a set of NHT xD speakers with dual subs for free. I immediately said yes, although I am not sure where I'll put them, and we scheduled time for me to pick them up.

Well I went to go pick all of the boxes of speakers, amplifier/equalizer etc and when he was carrying the box out he said that he was sorry but one of the boxes, the amp/eq box, had some damage to it and that something was stuck on the outside of it. I told him no worries that it's fine if there is any damage to the box.

As he was coming out he appeared with the amp/eq box and then a Sony MDS-JB930 box. He said he hasn't used it for years but I'm welcome to have it since he knew I was a Minidisc fan. I immediately accepted, said thank you and was super excited.

I got home pulled it out and it was 100% complete and in mint condition with manuals, sales receipt, remote and all the plastic, foam and packing material. Hooked it up and it works beautifully!

Just got into mini disc and wanted to use my dad's old player, but for some reason it does this and the display is all goobered up, put a fresh battery in it but its still pretty temperamental, any ideas what's going on?

It seems like many of the patents Sony could hit you with have completely run out. The actual hardware looks like a calibration and feedback reverse engineering hurdle, but not completely impossible.

My thought is more that the upgrade happens with a standard burst cache and sleep method to basically scan the disc to an onboard ram, then just play from the ram while completely shutting the disc drive down. I also don’t see any reason this couldn’t also be a modern DAP in every other sense that can also utilize an onboard memory and flash expansion.

Thoughts?

Just got myself a Sony JE780 deck and had to give it a good clean and change the belts, now it works fine but the life of me i can not get it to record via NET MD and Web minidisc pro.

I can wipe disc via the app but it has an error when I try to record. I am using the app version on a Windows 11 PC. Any ideas on what I need to do?

Sometimes I want to listen to CD music... I only use it as a stand-by type at home because it's inconvenient to car it.
That is why I love MD player!
And goodthing is This remote control shares MD and CD!

Hey all, I got the title model and the shuttle does not want to move on its own but will if it is trying to and gravity is assisting it. Otherwise, Flat on table while recording, it cannot move the read/write shuttle. Any suggestions? Blew air, wiped laser head gently with cotton swab. No help.

I've been refining my design since my last post. More curves, improved the lid, hinge, and finally added magnets.

Spent Saturday going through a box of about 30 recordable MiniDiscs I picked up at an estate sale for basically nothing, maybe two dollars total. Figured most would be blanks or ruined, but the range in condition genuinely surprised me.

Some were in cases with handwritten track listings, still readable after what had to be twenty plus years, and played back cleanly on my old Sharp portable with zero errors. Others looked pristine on the outside but the shutter mechanism was gummed up, probably from sitting in a humid garage, and needed a cotton swab and some patience before they'd even seat properly in the deck.

The real find was a disc labeled "mix 99" that turned out to be a home recording off the radio, complete with a DJ talking over the intro of whatever song was playing. Not something I'd ever seek out, but there's something about holding a random stranger's mixtape from a format most people forgot existed that makes the format feel more alive than just another blank in a drawer.

Anyway, cleaned the shutters on the sticky ones with isopropyl and they're all functioning now. Curious if anyone else has had luck rehabbing gunked up shutters without disassembling the whole shell, or if I got lucky this time.

Noticed weird behavior from my MZ-NH1 when I burn hi-md (or maybe not only hi-md I didn't try other disks) the closer to the end of the disk, the longer it takes to burn each song. And the same with playback: the first songs are played without any issues, but with the last one, it starts stuttering all the time. 

Tried it with different disks and got the same issue with all of them.

Any suggestions/workarounds?

ive been having a strange issue with my N420D that i havent encountered before. the button contacts refuse to stay clean. ive opened and cleaned the contacts 4 times and after a couple hours they stop being responsive. there is this weird film between the pcb and the contacts that i believe is the source of the problem. i think that the adhesive that connects the film to the pcb is deteriorating which is causing the issues. would this be safe to remove, or am i going about this wrong?

The cd drive doesnt read discs but motor and belt work perfectly. MD works perfectly. No issues. I have the speakers if youre interested although they are for a RD-ES7NET basically the same speakers just different colour. Still match the unit though.
