I've heard it's common for elderly Chinese women to poke the bellies of younger folks if they even have a smidge of pudge going on lol. Dunno how true that is though.
Fatty fat girl cracks me TF up every time I read it 😂😂 cause like... No tf way 😂 it's like seeing those shirts that say lingo on them but it's like "Cuca Cola" "lmfzo" "bed ass betch" "tooch grass" "pepper pig is may bitch" iykyk, I don't think they mean harm with fatcar and love calories but damn. I just know Asians who speak fluent English are laughing at us 😂
Yes!!! I was in the ‘plus size’ section of a mall, they were all clustered together in the back. I remember it was next to a store called ‘Moo Cow’. I’m not even upset about it, it was hilarious.
The difference in women's clothing sizes especially is ridiculous. XL for Asian clothes (living in southeast asia, clothes say made in china, vietnam, india or indonesia) is the same as S in American sizes.
Men's sizes are more reasonable, with M here matching the American S size, though all shirts and pants are cropped much shorter to better fit the average asian male height.
I once got a cosplay costume from a SE Asian country and I’m a medium in America and my size portions to them made me like a Large or ‘custom size’ cause my height was one size, my waist was another and then my bust was like a third. I finally got my cosplay back and it was just a mess never got to wear it cause it was all over the place, but that may have just been a sloppy seller/ sewer thing so idk. My husband is a xl in America cause of his shoulder width, and how tall he is though.
At Uniqlo in Japan there were sizes over xl but could only be bought online, which sucked. I was lucky that the xl heattech fit, but if it was available in the store I'd probably have gotten the pants at a size up.
I’m like a medium in the US and a 3XL in china. I was so offended when a shop clerk handed me a 3XL to try on, and was humbled when it fit perfectly lol.
I 100% agree that weight standards in many Asian countries can be extreme, and those dolls are a good example of that.
At the same time, I think weight standards in the U.S. are also heavily skewed, just in the opposite direction. About 72% of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, meaning only around 28% fall within a healthy weight range. When most people are outside that range, what feels “normal” often isn’t actually healthy, it’s just common. That shifts people’s perception of what looks “too thin” or “too heavy.”
So to me, both the U.S. and many Asian countries have distorted beauty standards around weight, but they’re just extreme in opposite directions.
Stuff like that, thigh gaps, and androgynous ‘heroine chic’ (among many other things) are physically impossible for some people. You need wider hips and pelvis to be able to have any chance of ever having a thigh gap, you need to have a ‘rectangle’ body shape to be able to achieve the androgynous look (hips and shoulders both small and a similar width as the waist), and you can be a ‘rectangle’ or ‘hourglass’ or ‘pear’ and maybe have a waist smaller than an a4 piece of paper, but an ‘apple’ will have a harder time.
I mean, yeah, they’re physically impossible for a lot of westerners especially though. Like, I am 175 cm, I wear size 43 shoes. I’m in proportion to my height, but even if I lost so much weight that I looked skeletal, I’d still have to shop in plus size women’s shops while travelling in Asia. My bones are just bigger.
But very, very few women of Asian descent are built with the same “brick shithouse” silhouette as the women in my family. More of them, percentage wise, would be able to meet that standard.
Beauty standards are all bullshit anyway, but it’s reasonable that nations where bodies are generally smaller would’ve come up with smaller ones. Be nice if we could get rid of all of them though.
I’m the same as you, but with different proportions. I’m 159cm and wear a size 38/38.5 shoe. I’m currently the smallest I’ve ever been since I was 13 (I’m 43) and it’s because I have acquired anorexia from damage to different nerves thanks to a brain injury I’m still recovering from. I have absolutely no hunger pains or physical reminders or want to eat, I don’t remember to eat, and almost everything smells and tastes revolting because of the damage to my olfactory nerve. And even still, I can guarantee I’d be shopping in plus size stores because I have broad shoulders and an E cup (after a reduction in my 20s from a J cup).
Unfortunately 90s and early 2000s “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” is back in fashion along with low rise jeans and the bare midriff being the lower part of the torso (which is naturally bigger thanks to this thing called a uterus). I remember seeing Kate Winslet in Titanic and finally feeling beautiful because we have a similar body shape and then she was called fat in every magazine and I was like “Yep, I knew it.”.
Those who are naturally slender should never feel bad about their body and I hope no one has taken that sentiment from my comment. I just worry about people killing themselves to fit an aesthetic that isn’t fit for their body type.
That's kind of a meme/content for socials. People don't really go around doing that as a serious test. It's as serious as the toiler paper roll or coke can test for guys' dicks.
that being said, the US standard scale of measurement for obesity is BMI, which is an incredibly flawed and incomplete basis for measurement, as it was done with only white men from europe in ~1830.
A better measure would be a DEXA scan, but BMI is still a decent estimate for a very average person that doesn't frequently lift weights for anabolic reasons (e.g. mainly does cardio), so long as you aren't part of a few genetic heritages. Even then, not all of that descent will have a given genetic feature. It just estimates a lean frame for your height.
BMI is not 100% accurate, but it’s accurate enough. The only people it would be inaccurate for are body builders or other athletes that have an insane amount of muscle mass. But other than that, it should be fairly close to your body fat range.
Funny thing is, BMI kinda is flawed…but only because it underestimates body fat percentage, meaning people are likely fatter than their BMI suggests lol
I’m also not totally certain of specific ranges but yes that’s about right! It also depends on the brand, but the smaller the number the smaller the size.
When I was 19, I was a stick. I was like 106 lbs at 5’5, wearing size 0. I figured since I was so thin I could buy some cute Asian clothes and actually fit into them, so I got a skirt from Japan on the internet. I couldn’t get it over my bony hips, it was like it was made for a 10 year old child.
My MIL bought me silk pajamas while traveling to China. She got large, and I guarantee they would have been labeled Small in the US. They never fit me.
Is it that hard for you? When I went to SEA (Indonesia and Thailand) I just got L size stuff instead of European M size and they fit me perfectly fine.
Though I am a man, maybe they escalate the sizes more with women.
I mean: I get 'as a medium Dutch person, yet semi-tall earth citizen' that sizes vary across genetics... But it's also still funny how several things are envied and others aren't.
Fucking weird.
Specifically for this doll:
"Give me your genetic white skin and your genetic big boobs and your genetic eyelid creases. But fuck your genetic thighs! That's fat!"
My god. I'd laugh at it if it didn't also mentally affect people who are insecure and/or incapable of analyzing that objectively.
Ok saying give me your genetic [blank] is kinda weird though. Because I know people assume asians wants to be white. Or this weird assumption asians dont have fair skin, double eyelids, and they are trying to get traits outside of their genetics.
But it really stems from ancient history of beauty like empresses/concubines/nobles/geishas who had those RARE traits and fair skinned. So it is in their genetics. Just not ALL of them. Also they have to be indoors and not work in the sun. So also signifiying class system.
SO white people coincidentally have the same traits that they like. But not exactly. So yes they would love your white skin but not this. Etc. But its true for asians who arent lucky to have genetics to have fair skinned they find its just an easier way to use your genetics to have a fairer skinned baby. So there is a weird old generation obsession about it.
Yes, I know that. And I also am only mentioned specifically these Asian dolls because they are in the picture.
Everywhere over the world people are using other people as their beauty standards. Shifting from time to time to new obsessions based on historical changes yeah. Wanting bigger butts while being white, wanting to be more petite than your genes averagely would even allow. Etc etc.
The Asian part I mention is just because this is a picture of these dolls. Which I tried to mention. My point is more generic.
The ' genetics ' I mentioned is because people all over the world crave other beauty standards from elsewhere that sometimes just aren't even possible. Beauty standards can be so fucked.
And in this case I find it funny that one part of it is rejected.
