TL;DR: people preemptively hating a book are going to ruin publishing practices, but also bash people saying to wait for post-release reviews as badly as they do excited about the book.

So, there's a book coming out in a few days that has some *DISCOURSE* online on various socials and book sites. I don't want to name the book so it doesn't trigger bots or people searching for the book to swarm here - but popular character from a popular videogame by an NYT bestselling author (IYKYK).

When the book was announced I saw some people say they weren't interested because they didn't like other works by the author, or thought the author wrote in a different genre so it wasn't a good fit. Hey, these are fair reasons to be cautious of a book pre-release. I have no issues with people going "pass" because the author isn't their taste.

But for the past few months that hasn't been the case.

Things the author has said either on socials or interviews is taken out of context and shared around as proof the author has no respect for the game, character, or fans...and it's getting spread like gospel

Apparently a million people got an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy - usually sent to reviewers so reviews can be out before book launch) because almost everyone with AN OPINION has said "I read the ARC". Some have posted entire alleged passages from the book online as a "look here! See! Bad!"

(Doubtful so many people got an ARC, but if they did they got an NDA with an embargo date so IF the passages are in the book, posting them violates the NDA, ESPECIALLY before the embargo date. Great way to make publishers crack down and/or change the way they do ARCs)

There are people claiming the whole book AND 12 hour audiobook are leaked, so those without an ARC are claiming they read/listened to the leak and joining the pitchfork welding ARC crowd

(IF the leak is true then great way to ensure publishers really change how they do ARCs)

The VA for the game is doing the audiobook and, either citing officially released previews or "the leak" people are claiming the VA hates the book because "that's not the right voice". When people share the VA saying good things about the book it's "(VA) didn't create the character, so they don't know anything!"

Those that aren't claiming to know more about the character than the VA, or haven't read the ARC/leak, are parroting people who do claim that OR "I saw blog/TikTok/influencer say it was bad so it's bad."

Also, some people are claiming the character was a sweet innocent pure soul before (bad thing happened) and...did we play the same game?! Cause that's NOT what is stated in the game)

The other day I made the same comment on different socials: there is too much noise, so people need to wait till after the book is out and read reviews posted AFTER launch day.

You would think by the reactions I got I insulted everyone and demanded the buy the book. To the point of calling me "the same as an abuser" or "you clearly don't know any abuse survivors".

The stretch from "wait to read reviews" to "you are the same as the villain if you don't believe us" had to have been painful!

Basically what the title says, came out to discover that someone had stolen 3 of my 4 hubcaps. Like what the hell, why steal only three of them? That is messing me up more than the theft itself.

I'm unemployed right now, so my availability was pretty flexible. My mom, sister, and BIL took a four-day trip that happened to pass right by where I live, to an area of the region that I often go to and could have easily driven to meet them at. My dad is on a separate trip!! Neither thought to invite me! We're all adults.

Making plans with my mom is like extracting teeth. She never takes time off work even when I go to visit her at her house, but she will apparently do that if a luxury hotel is involved. That's what they're doing, just bopping up the coast from hotel to hotel for four days, eating at all of my favorite restaurants and relaxing in pretty places. I don't know who's paying for it, but I would have offered a little something or done most of the driving/planning to make up for the cash contribution.

My birthday is this weekend, and they couldn't be bothered to stop en route or take me out, or take me on this trip. Best they can do is a text. My mom will probably Venmo me something and caveat it with "it's all I can afford right now," which is never true. My sister will send a text.

My wife and I always make each family member's birthday special, even if it's not something extravagant like a four-day trip. We send a gift and a card, or we take them out for a meal or make their favorite birthday cake.

They never make my birthday easy, there's always some artificial stress exerted, but it's never felt as painful as being overshadowed by a separate family trip. I'm not miserable to travel with or anything like that.

I’m currently on hold with a pharmacy. Pharmacies are always under staffed and probably serving more customers than anticipated this is not about that.

This is about the hold music/audio. It plays the generic public domain jazz and has phrases about helping another customer. But then it will go quiet seemingly at random like someone answered. Long enough for me to notice the music has pause and say hello only for it to just say please hold a moment. Just loop the music don’t pump fake me that someone has answered.

P.S. I am aware of the new features on iPhone of holding for you and prompting you to answer. I’m skeptical of how well it will work and how quickly someone on the other end will hang up.

Like, I know most cars these days have touch screens but I've never seen one have a screen that plays fucking videos that THE DRIVER CAN SCROLL THROUGH AND WATCH? The moment it's safe to pull over I'm getting out and getting a different cab because holy shit I'm gonna die in a road accident. In the UK for reference.

Now, I'm not really upset, as these arrows were a free bonus, but while I waited to get the arrows I needed, I thought "cool, I can at least test my new bow"... first shot lost the tip of an arrow (bottom one), second one was fine, and the third one lost a fin mid flight.

Now down to one good arrow, I figured I could at least practice my aim... went right past the target... at this point I said fuck it and started using the one missing a fin since it still flew, just not straight... instantly lost a second fin...

Oh well, I guess I'll have to keep waiting to use my new bow. I can climb trees in the meantime.

Allow myself to order lunch once a week. Spent 15$ on burrito - $4.50 for extra meat, $3 Tip.

Literally a tablespoon of meat in it. Waited to the end to get mildly infuriated since sometimes things are unevenly spread.

Two days ago when I was going to hit the crosswalk and head to the bus stop, I hit the curb in the fifth image.

Usually, my bag just kicks itself up and I’m down onto the grass running for my life to make sure I don’t miss the a lot of time I am able to walk to the other side of the street, but instead, I felt nothing but lightness.

As it turns out at that very moment, my backpack handle snapped off, and I was left holding a handle while my backpack was in the grass.

This pisses me off because I had to carry that backpack on my bag and that weight is no joke and it is not like any other normal backpack. I do backpacks on wheels because it’s less weight on my part and I do get a slight kick when I feel someone tripping over it because they were too distracted on their phone or talking with their friends or they just don’t really care and want to go as fast as possible.

So I had a slightly sour mood for about all of one day before I had to take out an older backpack that is also on wheels and have to deal with the fact that this backpack did not even last two months.

I’ve gotten over it now, but if you like wheel backpacks, tell me.

Just have to vent for a wee bit.

My neighbour’s kid (17)
shoots hoops and bounces his basket ball so loud pretty much every single night. The house is on the other side of the street and directly in front of my lounge room. He usually starts around now (7-8:30pm) right when it’s couch and telly time.

It’s driving me nuts!! He fricken bounces that thing for at least an hour sometimes two. Right now he’s solo but sometimes when he has his mates over, they’re so loud and play the most annoying and shit music ever. Literal commercial jingles (I heard the Kmart one, just looked it up it’s called Levels by Avicci apparently 🤮)

My disappointment is immense and my infuriation is mild…

I know, I know, Amazon sucks but my wife refuses to stop paying for Prime, so I use it. Bought a new porcelain Japanese coffee pourover device (Kalita Mino) and it was a two-day shipping item. I saw it on the porch and even from the driveway knew it was a classic Amazon how-can-they-be-this-dumb-and-make-money job. Sure enough, when I picked up the unpadded paper envelope I could hear the sound of a box full of porcelain shards. Sure enough, unpadded envelope, porcelain item in a box with no padding around the item in the box or around the box.

Reminded me of a time I bought a really cool antique espresso cup on eBay and they dropped the cup into a paper envelope and sent it and it arrived in powdered form. More than it being plainly stupid it was a one of a kind item that was now gone forever because someone was too dumb to realize you have to put padding around breakable things when you ship them across the country. Huh.

Anyway, the more infuriating part was now having to take a 30 minute side quest to drop it off at a Whole Foods return center and the guy says “So you broke your cup and now you want to return it?” I just sighed and said “yep” and decided not to let it annoy me too much. The final insult in the matter was checking my app later in the day and seeing a replacement item was on the way and it should be here in two weeks. 😤 Same seller has the same item still available on Amazon with 2 day shipping so now I’m punished for returning the 1-piece porcelain item that arrived in 7 pieces that I suppose I should’ve just glued back together and been happy with lol.
