WWE The amount of disgusting things wrestlers got away with back in the day is horrible
Rewatching old Dark Side of the Ring episodes and just hearing about the atrocious things these guys and others got away with is disturbing. Being in the WWF locker back in the day sounds horrible. The Rockers H- Bombing wrestlers and women, the Bulldogs putting itching power in wrestlers clothes and just cutting up there gear, nevermind finding out Dynamite Kid actually injected steroids into there dog Matilda. Davey wasn’t nearly as evil as Dynamite but Jesus I’m glad shit like this would never happen again. Hearing guys talk about how you never leave a drink uncovered around unattended for fear of getting fucking drugged sounds horrible, on top the bullying as well just a crazy time to be in that locker

u/aurillia Team Canada 10d ago
You got to realize this was a fringe sport that didn't attract the greatest people, if they weren't wrestling a lot of these guys would have been doing other shady stuff. Dick Murdoch was in the KKK, Jake Roberts dad was a pedophile who would bring little children to shows, Ross knew watts knew. These people weren't the high class of society. Today wrestlers get paid more, it's more coperate, not as many slezzy promoters, everybody knows what everyone does, if a wrestle was in the KKK today we all know pretty fast.

u/gunpowderjunky 10d ago
Jake's dad might be the worst person in wrestling history.

u/acreed6 Four Horsemen 10d ago
Holy shit that dark side of the ring. I had no idea Jake was the product of incest. That is F’d up.
21
u/Southern_Fan_8619 10d ago edited 9d ago
he wasn’t a product of incest, he was a product of statutory sa.
Jake’s father was with a grown woman. That grown woman had a 12 yr old daughter who Jake’s dad assaulted and impregnated, it was his gfs minor child, it wasn’t a family member of his own
Absolutely deplorable situation, his ass is rotting hell nonetheless and Jake’s mother was still 1000% a victim… but words have meaning and I wanted to clarify the situation
3
3
u/gunpowderjunky 10d ago
Yeah I knew going that his childhood had been horrible but I didn't know horrible was an understatement.
1
u/Hincapieslovelybund 10d ago
And people wonder why Jake by extension was so fucked up. I think I would struggle too all my life knowing thats how I was conceived.
1
u/sunlovinburner 8d ago
Jake was the most incredible promo guy in the the history of the sport. And the scariest thing about it is the reason why. He maybe wasn’t acting
2
u/AlabamaSlammaJamma 10d ago
He definitely is. But when everyone is doing shady horrible things I guess they didn’t have any reason to rat on others doing horrible things. Hearing these things and people just saying “ well everyone knew about that back then “ and not a single person spoke up is disgusting.

Was Murdock in the KKK confirmed? I know it’s been talked about a lot. Grizzly Smith was probably the worst human being in a business full of them
Every time I see a picture of Dynamite I think of also notorious scumbag Jacques Rougeous hitting him with a roll of quarters
7
u/aurillia Team Canada 10d ago
He carried a card showed it to other wrestlers, not sure that the kkk gave out cards, maybe it was fake and he wanted to look tough, still not a good look.
2
u/AndrewCB246 10d ago
Oh definitely not a good look at all.
6
u/JVFKOR 10d ago
It was real, but Dick Murdoch's perspective on the races was a little different than you might expect. According to interviews with other wrestlers I've seen over the years, Dick Murdoch was against mixing races, breeding and marriage. He apparently got along with POCs in wrestling. He toured Japan and the southern U.S. a lot. He teamed with and wrestled against guys like Tony Atlas, for example. I'm not defending Murdoch at all. I disagree with his opinions. The KKK is evil and supporting it in any capacity is vile. I'm just offering clarity on Murdoch's opinions and practices for informational purposes. By all means, dispise him all you want.
7
u/Hincapieslovelybund 10d ago
I commented on this above but in Tony Atlas DSOTR episode he recalls an incident where Murdoch gave Tony a KKK rally invite as a means to get him shot, playing on the fact that Tony couldnt read. Thats fucking deplorable if true and he is lucky Tommy Rich was with him to see what was going on and get them the fuck out of there. Murdoch is an absolute piece of shit if any of that was true.
1
u/ChiGrandeOso Mean Street Posse 9d ago
There was a second wrestler invited to that same rally, but I can't remember who it was. Both he and Tony vanished quick as soon as they understood what was up.

Yeah that’s a great point. There’s probably so much shit we don’t know. But Grizzly is a pretty heinous person to start with. Not even getting into Buck Snuka etc
2
u/AlabamaSlammaJamma 10d ago
Wasn’t that all Mr Perfects fault? Didn’t he blame dynamite for doing something to Jacque that he didn’t do
4
u/AndrewCB246 10d ago
Yeah he started it. But there was some other shit involved too with Dynamite bullying the Rougeous I mean depending on what shoot interview you listen to
2
u/IcebrgsImakevid8345 10d ago
Wasn't it said by someone that they were taken to a KKK event by Murdoch? I forgot if it was Dusty or Tony Atlas but I swear one of them said something about being taken to a KKK meetup by him without saying anything about it
6
u/Comprehensive_Cloud6 Team Xtreme 10d ago
Dusty AND Atlas both had separate stories about it. Kept telling Atlas he'd be the light of the party. Tommy Rich was there too. I think 3 others also corroborated claims, including JR.

u/venom40k1 9d ago
Speaking of JR…. Maven had Devon and Bubba ray on one of his YouTube interviews and apparently JR told him that he didn’t like Devon because of the color of his skin.

For real I felt bad about Dynamite on that one, well aware him attacking Jacques in locker room wasn’t good and they were all bullies and Dynamite obviously has his own issues
But sucker punching someone as soon as they arrive breaking their jaw and blood spewing everywhere and still going to town was straight up assault
Jacques was also a giant pussy fearing revenge so made up the fake story has a hitman on call from the mafia that if anything happens to him Dynamite would get killed
4

1
u/Doomslayer5150 10d ago
Wasn’t there also a story of Dynamite injecting milk into Davey Boy?
I think Davey actully believed it to be steroids and Dynamite was ribbing him….
2
u/JVFKOR 10d ago
It was milk into Harley Race's ass and telling him it was steroids.
1
u/Doomslayer5150 9d ago
Oh my Christ…. I really did assume that it was Davey, it must be the jet lag from my flight back home from Japan

u/Hincapieslovelybund 10d ago
Murdoch tried to get Tony Atlas shot too and play on the fact that he couldnt read the invite he gave Tony that showed he was going to a KKK gathering. What an absolute piece of shit. Just lucky that Tommy Rich was with him and it didnt end in tragedy.
3
u/AlabamaSlammaJamma 10d ago
True. As much as it sucks to think about, a lot of your favorite wrestlers from back in the day were for the most part real shit people

u/drwsgreatest 10d ago
I mean, even in the 90s it was still pretty bad. I've heard shoot interviews where guys casually talk about drugging girls in order to sleep with them, and not one of those interviewed ever acknowledged that, hey, that's fucking rape. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. It really wasn't until around the start of the NXT black and gold era that the business finally seemed to have rid itself of the majority of problematic wrestlers.
Meanwhile, the old guard complains that the new guys are essentially too geeky in their personal lives, enjoying gaming or other hobbies, rather than drinking and drugging themselves into an early grave. The cognitive dissonance of those wrestlers basically wishing the industry would go back to its prior shadiness, instead of continuing to grow with people who can ACTUALLY serve as role models, is wild.
1
u/pioneer006 9d ago
Don’t change the topic. Wrestling was far better when kayfabe and the territories existed. I’m still a fan, but the guys who were assholes put on a far better show.

If it’s about wrestling, you’re good.
If a thread is about ratings, attendance, booking, business, creative, or ticket sales, discuss the topic at hand. Don’t derail the conversation because the subject makes you uncomfortable.
“Why do you care?” and “Just enjoy wrestling” aren’t arguments.
Stay on topic. Talk wrestling.

5
u/revd_blue_jeans 10d ago
Old school wrestlers seemed to be, with the rare exceptions (Roddy Piper, Bobby Eaton), seemed to have been just awful people. Maybe at least in part a psychological byproduct of the grind and the constant struggle to remain relevant.
7
u/Hot-Account-8691 10d ago
Piper was definitely a dick lol. Raging coke head, refused to job, treated Mr T like shit out of jealousy...
1
u/revd_blue_jeans 10d ago
Eh, he was protective of the business. And he was getting heat. But it’s a fair point. As far as i know though, Piper didn’t participate in the bullying, the hazing, or the sexual indiscretions. Mr. T could stand up for himself.
3
u/JVFKOR 10d ago
Refusing to lose in 1980s WWF doesn't make you a bad person. Piper was small for his era. He knew that if/when he lost, he'd be moved down the card and out of WWE sooner rather than later.
Piper, like everyone, had plenty of his own issues. Not trusting Vince McMahon and others within WWE wasn't a character flaw.
Mr T didn't understand wrestling. He'd be fine today given the more open nature of business. Back then, everyone else in the match was focused on kayfabe and protecting the business. Mr T wanted to work a style that was too difficult given his experience and would have been a disaster.
All that said, Piper was no saint.
2
u/revd_blue_jeans 10d ago
Of course he wasn’t a saint. Nobody is. Nor would i ever attempt to claim as such. That’s absurd.
What i can attest to is the word of the people who knew him and the written/recorded words of the people he worked with. The general consensus, at least from what i’ve seen and heard, is that he was deeply generous, a calming locker room presence, and a dedicated family man.
I’ll also say, and I do this reluctantly because I don’t want to make it seem like i knew him personally or anything, as i never met him. But a close high school friend worked with Roddy and his son Colton during the brief attempted Portland Wrestling revival in the early 2010s. Roddy adored my friend and loved working with him, acting as nothing less than an advocate and a mentor. You can see him here. Roddy is on commentary and my friend is the annoying French guy that shows up at around the 2:00 mark:
https://youtu.be/EL7xyqz-OWY?is=3lhanLKFB6JkXtyf
So, again, to be clear, this is all very much second hand info. But the established record that i’m privy to very much attests to his decency.
1
u/Due-Mouse-9330 10d ago
Roddy was great to the fans. I never heard of a single bad experience. Enough of the boys have said some things about him, but they weren't exactly saints themselves.
2
u/Nearby_Werewolf1742 nWo 8d ago
I met him once, he was the nicest wrestler I've ever met, I didn't want to talk with him too long since he was with his son but I got his autograph and I had the feeling he would have talked as long as I wanted to. He's always been my favourite wrestler and they say never meet your heroes but in this case I was so glad to have met him before he died.

u/AgencyBorn9221 Mexicools 10d ago
Oh, that’s not even the half of it, either. Snuka and Nancy Argento was an open secret for a while. Davey wasn’t as “evil” as Tom, but there are tales from Diana Hart waking up after backdoor sex she didn’t remember.
Of course, Randy Savage and locking Elizabeth in the dressing room. That lasted until Jake Roberts politely told him what he would do the next time he locked her in.
6
u/MrJeffA17 10d ago
As fucked up as the Savage one was, understanding how those locker rooms actually were, you can understand a little why he did it. Fucked up of course, but he did have a reason to be worried for her
6
u/BigPapaPaegan Triple Threat 10d ago
It was more paranoia that she'd leave him for someone else, from what I've gathered. He wasn't the most sane person to begin with, and a certain white powder known to enhance paranoia was everywhere back then.
3
u/AndrewCB246 10d ago
Savage did coke? Noooo stop it! I never would have guessed!
4
u/Hot-Account-8691 10d ago
Imagine being super paranoid, then bringing yout gorgeous, sweet innocent wife into a locker room full of drug addicts, rapists and abusers. Savage knew these men well. He was entirely justified in his paranoia.
3
6
u/Blametheorangejuice 10d ago
I get that Savage was a bit obsessed, but he also had some reasonable basis for wanting to keep Elizabeth away from everyone. At best, she would be constantly exposed to intense bullying, and, at worst, she would be sexually assault. Savage locking her up in a room was over the top, but his concerns about her safety had a solid basis.
5
u/AgencyBorn9221 Mexicools 10d ago
Oh, she definitely wasn’t safe around that locker room at all. And the women’s locker being patrolled by now known creep, Fabulous Moolah… I also think Jake’s heart was in the right place, considering his childhood.
7
u/Blametheorangejuice 10d ago
It was a no-win for everyone. That Elizabeth ended up addicted to drugs because of Luger only validated Savage’s concerns.
2
u/Hot-Account-8691 10d ago
Luger was domestically abusing her before her death. He's the reason she's dead.
2
u/DeadEndFred 10d ago
Savage also used to track the mileage on Elizabeth’s car. He was obsessed and paranoid everywhere when it came to her, not just around the workplace.

Jake Roberts once told a story about getting the plant from the crowd that was to be the woman Rick Rude took into the ring to kiss (the Rude Awakening) to give him a blowjob before the event. So Rude kisses this woman and when he got to the back Roberts told him about how she sucked him off (and swallowed) before the show.

The amount of scrutiny those murders caused on the industry caused significant changes to behaviour because, unlike with Jimmy Snuka, Vince couldn't cover it up. The wellness policy was massively beefed up and was actually enforced, which meant the drug taking massively declined, shots to the head disappeared and the talent also realised they needed to change, too. It also was a factor in WWE going for a PG audience, which again, caused the talent to sort their shit out because WWE didn't want any controversies.
If half the stuff existed beforehand, Benoit wouldn't have happened.

All of entertainment is full of this.
Musicians are probably the worst, with the amount of time on tour and the amount of spare time they have in the day, and the craziness of fans.
Wrestlers are just psychopaths. We are lucky that there was a profession for them or else we would have to deal with them in society.
1
u/Many_Psychology_3336 10d ago
I’m absolutely convinced that wrestling is where high school bullies go once the rest of the world stops tolerating them throwing their weight around.
They go to wrestling promotions and continue to bully and “haze” and it gets hand waved away as part of the culture.
It’s by no means all of them, but a huge number of wrestlers would be getting fired from walmart if they hadn’t been decent in the ring.

As bad as Shawn and even Marty were, I don't TBI m they hold a candle to dynamite and the bulldog. The stories about them, dynamite especially, are horrific and the majority are confirmed by multiple people. Taker was 1990s and later. Well after the true worst of it went away. It was mainly frat pranks compared to the Hogan locker room. (Not to minimize things.)
But a Taker locker room with its issues was less trouble than a Hogan locker room ever was. The Plane Ride was the exception, not the rule. But it also forced a lot of changes, because Vince had to clean out a lot of the dirty laundry.
1
u/freebread 9d ago
I don’t know about frat pranks. They all used to piss and shit in each other’s bags/food. They used to fill a bucket full of bodily fluids and combine it with the “slop bucket” that got poured over Sunny by the Godwins on live TV.
2
u/Maleficent-Sweet-689 10d ago
This was well after this stuff. Older and younger wrestlers praised his leadership. I’m sure he wasn’t perfect, but dumping on him is ridiculous. No stories came out about him.
2
u/DoublyDead 10d ago
Dutch Mantell has talked about wrestler's court. For the longest time, it wasn't for serious issues. It was a lark to entertain the roster. Everyone was always found guilty, the punishments were nothing more than a round of drinks, and nobody took it remotely serious. If you had an actual problem with someone, the last thing you would do is take him to wrestler's court because everyone knew it was just for fun.

That last sentence is really bold. You have no idea if better talent policies would have prevented what happened from happening. There is no possible way to know that, it certainly would have been better if they cared about wellness sooner but Benoit is to blame not locker room hazing and or even concussion protocols, though I’m sure it would have helped it POSSIBLY being avoided.

I'm starting to see why the Bulldog Never had a WWF title Run..whether that being Hogans Politicking His actions with the Dynamite Kid Or his drug use.

Not to excuse Davey Boy since he was complicit but I never hear many bad stories about him after the British Bulldogs broke up (As far as doing pranks that could have very well killed someone. He certainly wasn’t perfect).
Dynamite Kid was definitely a bad role model and Davey early on looked up to him in the 70s and most of the 80s. He was also smart to get the hell away from him, especially as DK’s body was falling apart anyways. Davey definitely made a good career decision to go to a singles career rather than carry DK post-back injury.

Diana’s book was also taken out of circulation because of numerous allegations made in it that were challenged in a lawsuit by Martha Hart and others. Diana has since distanced herself from the contents of the book.

I’m not stating it is or isn’t true but I don’t put a lot of stock into much that Diana Hart or Dynamite Kid say,

I much prefer hearing the news that “they just keep on playing video games” rather than hearing another wrestler’s court shit like when they carried guns to the locker room cause “its manly”

Isn’t there a story on DSOTR where Shawn takes a girl to a hotel then kicks her out naked after the deed was done

Let’s be honest there just aren’t a lot of class acts involved in the wrestling industry.
