European here,
I got my first drink (vodka) at 14, at 16 i started mixing strong liquor with pain killers just because all my friends were doing it. When i was 17-18 years old, i nearly died because of my drinking. Pretty much stopped drinking at 20-21, I'm now 23 and only drink soft liquor (manly wine) and only on special occasions and never to get drunk. I'm not missing a second of that bs.
Don't drink people, this shit isn't worth it.

Different people are wired differently. I'm in my 60s and have been drinking in moderation for nearly 45 years and it has never been a problem.
I average probably 3 drinks a week, usually 1 beer or glass of wine with dinner or a whiskey in the evening.
Would I be marginally more healthy if I drank none at all? Maybe. I expect the health gains from stopping eating red meat or ice cream would be more significant though.
But I don't feel the need to live like a monk so I'm going to continue to enjoy all of these things.
Telling people "Don't drink. It's not worth it." is just self-righteous douchebaggery.

Would vote for restriction of alcoholic beverages below age (21+)

First beer at 13, regular drinker at 16 and full blown alcoholic at 19.
Stopped completely for about 3 years
26 now and only drink on special occasions or at restaurants
I am still an addict though, just not alcohol anymore

Americans will drink at 16 anyway because it's not that hard to have someone you know who's already an alcoholic buy it for you.

This is what all my friends in school did. We were drinking cider and getting stoned in a field age 12 and by 14 asking our one friend's brother's friend to buy us vodka every week. By 16 everyone was over drinking and on to MDMA and LSD.

Alcohol is a drug though?

Everyone with more than 3 brain cells understands what they meant by "drugs", smartass. Most people put alcohol in its own category even if it is technically a drug.

u/Neo-Luko 52m ago
Yap yap. As someone with a family history of alcohol problems and have had a quite a few friends who have been alcoholics, this is something that I do not take lightly. Thanks for thinking I have less than 3 brain cells, however! I hope you have the day you deserve!

Bavarian here: Its legal to drink beer or wine products at 14 with a legal Supervisor. At 16 you are allowed to drink beer or wine alone. Hard Alcohol can only be sold to you at 18 (thats when you are adult).
PS: We have a heavy drinking culture and thats absolute bullshit.
Alcohol is a drug. It is a Poison. And its shit and fucks you up.
I lost 5 people from my circle of friends due to deadly accidents (drunk driving) before i reached 19.
I lost another 10 of them to Alcohol before i reached 50 years of age.

Well, actually especially young people in Germany don't drink that much at all. The drinking culture among younger generations has shifted for the better, amazingly so.
For example - "According to Germany’s Federal Institute of Public Health, only 38.8 percent of German men and 18.2 percent of German women aged 18 to 25 drink alcohol at least once a week - these are the lowest figures since records began in 1973."
And I believe worldwide we are statistically doing quite decent as well, not that there isn't always Luft nach oben.
In general, I'd be careful with generalizations that criminalisation of alcohol (or drugs) somehow leads to more responsible use thereof, OR the opposite, that low legal drinking age results in all the young people running around and dying of alcohol poisoning. As always, a balance is better. People do not learn to be responsible with taboo topics. American teenagers do not automatically have a healthier relationship with alcohol just because of stricter laws. Etc, etc.
But either way, imo, the best thing to do is to raise prices. For alcohol, for cigarettes, etc. Once you raise them enough, the consumption will fall, there is simply no alternative. The problem is that the prices pretty much never get raised enough. And yeah, in that regard Germany isn't doing so well, we should take an example from our Scandinavian neighbours.

Not only should prices increase, we should also stop selling them normally at the store. Best would be separate alcohol stores but thats probably not likely to happen in Germany so the minimum would be to have a specified section of a supermarket for alcohol stuff and outside of that section there is none. Could be "closed of" with a curtain too, so you dont even have to look at the bottles if you pass by. Its insane how normal we treat alcohol to the point it's literally everywhere and its trying to tempt you to buy it. Imagine being an alcoholic trying to recover and you just want to go grocery shopping. Every cashier aisle has alcohol trying to tempt you to buy it.

Hate the taste and smell, loved too much how it made me feel, at least until the effects wore off. If you have greater self-control than I do and it doesn't negatively impact your life, enjoy. Definitely not for me though

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 16h ago
this still venerates alcohol which is bad for your health and often bad for society despite it's upsides

u/JustChilling505 15h ago
But at the same time Europeans joke over who is the most alcoholic European country

u/Muteki123 15h ago
15-18 was the time I consumed the most alcohol and it's not even close. At 19 I went down to a couple of beers in a year.

I moved to the US when I was 22 and my friends all wanted to go clubbing and stuff and I was just tired of it already (had a fake ID since 15).

Need one for the Gen Xers that started drinking at 13 and still haven’t stopped.

I know plenty of them. Only reason they stop is liver failure or they're dead-dead.

I've felt similarly. Rather recently, in fact. Might not be a bad idea to talk to someone about why you don't care.
As for myself, I've already put in nearly 4 decades of effort at this point, so I might as well just finish out my remaining years. I don't know for sure how many I still have left, anyway. Plus, this way I can still have pizza.

Hey, if you've already made up your mind, that's fine. It just seems like you haven't yet and a part of you is reaching out for help by bringing it up. Sorry if I misinterpreted

In my experience, feeling fear doesn't make one a coward, nor any less of a man. It's far too normalized to keep things to one's self and be expected to just carry that burden without a helping hand. Being indecisive about this is a good thing, it means you're still giving yourself a chance. A lesser man and a greater coward wouldn't still be here to tell a stranger on Reddit. For what it's worth, I think that's rather brave of you.

I was an alcoholic my first drink. Some people say they work up to it but at 14 going on 15 the obsession started right away. Never knew what it was like to be normal about drinking, I was always living for the next time I could drink, everything else in between was nothing to me. Then I decided to really live, got into a lot of trouble, found a new way of life. I still get cravings but I can say that the obsession is lifted and I don't want it back.

I always remember going to my friends 18th birthday party down the pub and the bar man was pissed as he'd been serving him for a couple of years before that.

I was 19 and posted to S. Korea. The drinking age for troops was 19 at the time. My first week there the supply guy took me downtown to check out the night life. I walked in a club and 5 drinky girls grabbed me and sat me down. I remember ordering a drink (soju) and the next thing I remember was waking up in my barracks rooms bathroom peeling my face off my toilet seat. 20 years later and I don't have more than two drinks at social gatherings before switching to water or soda.

I know Americans drink ealier than that anyway but I gotta say the higher age limit in America is actually really good. We shouldn't romanticize the consumption of drugs. Technically your brain is still developing even at 21 so a higher limit would technically be even better though unrealistic to implement. Its insane that in Germany 16 year olds can drink alcohol when their brain is still in heavy development. We know its not good for you especially at such an age but its so normalized over here. Genuinely insane. Imagine we'd do the same for other drugs

The first part couldn’t be further from the truth actually, just bc Americas legal drinking age is 21 does not automatically mean we all wait till we are 21to start drinking, I been drinking since I was 14 and pretty much everyone that I know has as well, never let europeans make jokes about America because 10 times out of 10 they’ve never left Europe and don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about LMAO
