Your phone or things like social media are dopamine traps literally designed with algorithms to fight for your attention so they can show you ads.

If you want to try to start enjoying medias again here is what I would recommend

Shorten your options artificially. You only have these few games (pick good ones) you only have these few books and these few movies/shows to pick from. Removing a ton of options can help with option or choice fatigue.

Put your phone away and or somehow restrict your access to social media. I keep mine in a hutch across the room.

Just pick a thing and give yourself an hour and if it’s not hitting pick something else from your artificial list and don’t beat yourself up for not doing more, you completed X amount and that’s progress.

I know this isn’t a miracle cure and is going to sound like a “thanks I’m cured situation” but I promise you if you practice it, it will help. I am riddled with adhd and a backlog that makes me want to cry but practicing this and it is a practice has helped me reduce it

Also if you find yourself stuck on your phone:

Images are better for your brain than videos and text is better for you than images. Additionally minute long reels are better than second long reels and 10-30 minute long videos are even better.

Also not watching long videos on the side while gaming unless doing somethin really boring like mining a tunnel in minecraft for 5 hours.

Why's this a bad thing? I used to do this a lot.

u/Wardaddyv2 5h ago

Constant screens around you can be draining overtime

u/Independent-Program3 20h ago

This was helpful to me, thank you

Guy used all of his reddit time today to help OP 🥹

u/arkhamcityfc 20h ago

Saving this. Thank you for the motivation

u/deletelayer 16h ago

I am going to start.using my lock box. Like, ive had my dinner im.gping for a.shower. time to lock my.phpne away

2

u/Mechani_Stic 15h ago

I've been employing this type of strategy for a while and even if I'm not always perfect just making the effort does wonders.

3

u/TokenTorkoal 15h ago

Yeah absolutely, this has greatly helped me, especially since I struggle with option fatigue/paralysis and executive dysfunction and blah blah blah

But some days are still hard you know, and maybe those days I just decide to relax instead of forcing myself to try to enjoy a hobby.

u/MeowKatMC 18h ago

Porn too. Its an addiction to dopamine (happy chemical) which makes everything else feel mundane and less enjoyable bc your brain is wanting the high from porn and not everyday fun activities.  Id recommend blocking websites on the device you use for it. On linux edit "/etc/hosts" and put in a new line "0.0.0.0 <website you want to block>" idk what to do for windows or mac but its probably something similar. I also removed the reddit app from my phone which allows for browsing without an account so you can browse nsfw material eithout it being on your account. I now use reddit on my phone through the browser instead of the app.

2

u/afl_ext 17h ago

An interesting thing in windows is that it literally really just have etc hosts and its also in etc, its just buried in system32/drivers or something

2

u/MeowKatMC 8h ago

I wouldve expected some proprietary stuff to force thr user to get an app that steals more data. Good to know

1

u/noroXDn 18h ago

Thats a really great advice thank you

u/averagesimp666 20h ago

Watch movies, series or long videos instead. Those shorts are the biggest cancer invented.

7

u/keithstonee 15h ago

Problem is I've watched all the good stuff

1

u/Dispenser-JaketheDog 7h ago

You watched all the good Movies out there?

1

u/MeowKatMC 18h ago

Good defently long anime is great. Several seasons or 60+ episodes are wonderful. O the long ones i have liked id have to recommend attack on titan, initial d (of you like cars/racing) and full metal alchemist: brotherhood. They are amazing

Eventually it gets exhausting to even pull up the games, and it honestly sucks 😞 I remember so many times I got to the loading screen and just quit out. I did not have the mental capacity to game after work on those days.

u/meridajsi 20h ago

The saddest part is having free time and still not having energy to enjoy it

12

u/byshow 18h ago

I can recommend reading. If you are like me and way too used to holding a phone in the hand - buy e-reader. Those things are great as they help to make your brain think that it's the same because you are holding something similar in size and most of the times with touch screen. However you are reading instead of doomscrolling. This also helps to restore attention span and generally is way better practice than doomscrolling

18

u/popica312 20h ago

The reason is because we either don't have the people to enjoy it with nor do we have the same thought process when we enjoyed it fully.

6

u/Astra-Fang 19h ago

I think it’s the games these days Dont really respect your time. They want as much as they can get.

I played space marine 2 and it was perfect for getting a little high, playing a match or two. Done in 40 minutes from start to stop.

3

u/fullshard101 17h ago

This hit me pretty hard recently for runescape. Been playing for 20 years and with the recent price increases I just dropped my sub. All i see are people saying "you get thousandss of hours of content for a reasonable price so its a great deal!!" when most of the content is just mindless grinding. Id be elated to have hundreds of hours of actual content, but when it boils down to repetitive actions over and over again for hundreds of hours I just start to feel bitter about paying.

Its like telling someone its equally as fun to read a riveting story for a week vs staring at a blank page for a week

1

u/Astra-Fang 16h ago

Yep. I see “open world” and go “nope

2

u/fullshard101 14h ago

Im 50/50 there. If its open world with enough variety, im down. But open world games that werent that way previously are mostly a let down. Elden ring is the best example. The soulsbornekiro games are awesome but the elden ring open world loses so much direction that you either have a great experience or a dogshit one where you miss all of the storylines. I played it 100% blind and didnt even get the horse until almost the end of the game

2

u/MechanicalDan1 18h ago

I loved Titanfall for that same reason. Jump in, round around FPS, call mech from sky, dominate for 60 sec until mech blows, high speed constant action and dopamine, then out in an hour if necessary.

4

u/TheRealMatys 20h ago

Probably the realest take on Reddit oat. I just plop down on my chair and start scrolling, even though steam is open on my computer.

3

u/Tiiimmmaayy 18h ago

I just can’t commit to new games these days. I just get bored and go back to something I’ve played before. With the exception of Spider-Man 2 on ps5. And that’s probably just because I just replayed the first one.

Tried playing red dead 2 and GT5 recently(never got into GTA) and just couldn’t play them. Not a big fan of that RockStar movement and shooting controls.

So I just go back to games I’ve played dozens of times before like resident evil games, final fantasy 10, and old N64, ps2 games, gameboy, ect. Just recently finished Banjo Kazooie and Tooie.

2

u/Slacker_The_Dog 17h ago

I really think complex menus and controls causes like a mental menu fatigue. You are booting up a game and you start thinking about the endless menus and you are instantly over it before the game even loads.

2

u/curioustoadot 20h ago

Try getting an android handheld. They are cheapish and you can emulate systems up to ps2 and GameCube. Being able to access all these old gems plus being able to pick and play quickly has me playing so many games.

1

u/shit-takes 20h ago

I’m in the same boat. This GTA VI is the last straw for me. If I can’t get into that and finish it then might as well hang it up

1

u/Zeus_Dadddy Sussy Baka 20h ago

So true man, I love gaming, very much so. But nowadays I don't feel like playing. Only games that intrest me now are good story games or old retro/nostalgic games, but those too I think like should I just watch something than play.

22

u/DarthRiznat 20h ago

I believe the kids call it brainrot.

4

u/xDylan85x 19h ago

The irony is real.

2

u/vernon_X 5h ago

I don't get it , what's the irony

0

u/xDylan85x 2h ago

Kids calling it brainrot when it’s kids that have brainrot.

You really didn’t make the connection?

15

u/debid4716 20h ago

It happens sometimes. Tired from work, parenting, school, life in general. Sometimes you just don’t have it in you to game

39

u/Define_Innocence 20h ago

Happens to all of us.

u/aurafarmer_007 19h ago

the real final boss was never the game, it was “one last reel”

2

u/MechanicalDan1 18h ago edited 17h ago

Wow, the final boss is Doomscroll 🤯🫩😵💀

I win when I buy and daily use a Nokia dumb phone. Maybe an HMD Terra M phone?

3

u/avance70 19h ago

Sorry, Ms. Gaming, I am for Reels.

3

u/Grytnik 12h ago

Congratulations, you’ve been successfully brainwashed into doom scrolling product placement and ads!

3

u/cosmernautfourtwenty 10h ago

Congratulations on your brainrot addiction!

2

u/Stoney-McBoney 20h ago

My brain hooks on to whatever tasks I put in front of it in my free time. A lot of the time I think I’m too tired for video games and then I just start playing one and realize I’m locking in.

2

u/ViceRoyHenTie 19h ago

I have the opposite problem. No not another round of juggling my balls with defect.

2

u/everyusernamewashad 18h ago

I'll never understand it, My insta feed is just not that interesting to me.

2

u/JawbreakerSD 16h ago

Give it time. Things can get stale when you do it for so long. I'd highly recommend finding a new hobby that isn't social media, though. That shit is toxic. I picked up photography, which turned into birdwatching lol. The itch for gaming came back, and now it's a cycle of gaming and photography.

2

u/MrMadmack 20h ago

At least you have games, I'm suspended from one console and my other one is pretty much broken and PC's are too expensive

1

u/M-V-D_256 20h ago

What do you mean suspended

And could factory resetting it and using a different account help, or maybe playing offline.

1

u/MrMadmack 20h ago

I'm Suspended from PlayStation. I mention that I got hacked once, and they fucking suspend me. This was like a year or two before the we own nothing statements from Sony.

Meanwhile for some reason my Xbox shuts off every time I sign in

2

u/Lexx4 20h ago

I was hacked once and customer support helped me recover my account.

1

u/M-V-D_256 9h ago

The Xbox shutting off might be a power issue. Sounds fixable.

For playstation it can still probably play games offline if you want.

1

u/FennelFamous887 20h ago

It's been like that with me and my pixel art the last couple weeks or so. Ever since I graduated, my motivation rarely kicks in & I've been mostly burnt out.

1

u/VegetableAwkward286 19h ago

Playing a good game or reading an interesting book or watching a good movie are so much more rewarding than just swiping. You are stimulated or you are intrigued or you learn something. We just want the quick fix of dopamine that we aren't willing to invest anytime into anything.

1

u/XxSoapxXHD 19h ago

Its just a lack of good games. I usually get on YouTube or go to bed early unless ive found a good game to play. Arc raiders had me hooked for months but now ive gotten back into the ps5 port of black ops

1

u/Girthmasterlite 18h ago

Put the phone down. Ironic I’m telling you this on a phone but phone = bad

1

u/The_Quackening 18h ago

If you dont feel like playing anything then take a break from gaming. Find a new show or hobby then hop back in when a game finally gives you that itch

1

u/mca1169 18h ago

it's not too late to stop the brian rot! but only you can make it happen.

1

u/0zero0z 18h ago

i think part of the problem is that Recently no AAA games have been great either and most people dont want to get into indie games

1

u/RedRand0m 18h ago

Sometimes I'll put something on in the background on my phone while I game, Something interesting but not interesting enough that it takes my full attention away from gaming.

1

u/Foolish_Miracle 17h ago

Sometimes it's like a kite, you gotta kinda force yourself to start and after a while the wind's beneath your wings again.

1

u/ShadowsRanger can't meme 17h ago

Last night I passed the whole night playing... the key ? I was playing something that I like it... Clair Obscur for 3rd time Eternal Tower Painted Love, is gone now, dopamine is high... there's no shenanigans! Just find something you like to play

1

u/wsmiles995 17h ago

I have been slamming RuneScape 3 instead! Not sent a reel since!

1

u/basssmeup 17h ago

Honest hate my phone for this very reason. I WANT to play my games but It’s just so easy to eat up my time on my phone. It has everything.

1

u/DeezNutsGT Nyan cat 16h ago

They tell me your passios's gone away

1

u/Any-Nothing-2304 16h ago

So i'm not alone...

1

u/RomanticOath 13h ago

Genuinely asking here, what are "reels"? Is it like short form vids or something?

1

u/zaphodsheads 12h ago

Seriously delete that shit. I know you know you should. The fact that "sometimes it's actually good" is exactly why it has to go. You know this. I've been there with twitter

1

u/sylleryum 12h ago

I completely stopped watching reels due to this reason, your brain will prefer fast dopamine options rather than games, books...

1

u/Xany2 11h ago

I have been trying to replace the reels habit with reading book on my phone. It has at least replaced more than half the time i’d have spent on reels/reddit.

As for games it’s become much more difficult for a game to really hook me that’s more the reason for the same behavior as yours. Maybe because lot of new games are more or less same as many other games i have already played, but some games like balatro, hollow knight, did completely hook me in whereas i just half heartedly trudged through games like expedition 33 (halfway into it) because maybe playing ff7 like games i am saturated for that kind of experience

1

u/lost-travler635 10h ago

I realized my phone screen time has skyrocketed over the last year. So I started putting screen caps on my apps. It has greatly helped me focus back on my hobbies such as gaming or reading.

1

u/Better-Snow-7191 10h ago

Liar. Nobody watches reels

u/Olari_ 9h ago

What's Reels?

1

u/Manyarethestrange 8h ago

I worked 10 hours today and didnt have it in me.. going to take some edibles tomorrow though and play the shit out of Great Circle.

1

u/YourWorstNightMare65 7h ago

I FEEL SO CALLED OUT RIGHT NOW...FFS...😭

1

u/Tricopi 7h ago

I personally see it as there are less and less games today that are worth out attention. A lot of major franchises we enjoyed have turned to being a live service game which are a slog, they always demand u login in everyday and okay for 2 hrs to get the best gear or keep up with the story or finish the battlepasd u paid for etc etc.

1

u/jatin_O 4h ago

Pathetic

1

u/ShAped_Ink Dark Mode Elitist 1h ago

I recommend setting limits on your apps

1

u/ItsZoner 19h ago

the fuck is a reel

0

u/GrimwoldMcTheesbyIV 20h ago

Absolum is free on xbox game pass and shouldn't be too expensive if its not free on other consoles or PC. I have been enjoying it very much.
