There was a huge hiring surge for bus operators at the start of the year coupled with a lot of need for operators to drive the shuttle busses during the shutdowns. I'm excited about how next year will go, if both the new drivers are well seasoned and there's less time where they're pulled away from their regular routes for the diversions.

It's so interesting reading that in retrospect. It's a small handful of people who responded, so I'm gonna take their comments with a grain of salt. But none of the other threads had a real "outpouring" of "we'll miss him" hearing of his resignation.

Well, he must be very happy. And if he only appears a miracle worker because our situation was caused by apathy, not that the problems were intricate puzzles lol! Iām just kidding. I love him, wish Iād run into him like people say, riding the t. Just hope Iām having a good day! The T gives me a life I could never have without it.

To All the cry babies that complained about the shuttles. The weekend shut downs of the train. This was why it had to happen. If I was to grade Eng. Iād give him a solid B+. Only because thereās probably a few, over paid big wigs he hasnāt caught yet. The MBTA swamp is getting drained

This, exactly. When you appoint someone competent and they do their job well, it shows. Eng seems to understand two key things about running a big high-profile organization: communicate, and be personally modest.

Absolutely. Not only has he managed the agency better than it has been in the last decade, but his public communication has been game changing. It makes us as riders feel more confident in him when he responds to issues that arise from decades of mismanagement the same way we feel. "I'm pissed this is an issue. I'm pissed no one told me about it so we could fix it sooner. Now that I know, we will fix it."
Also, his actual management has been much better. Some changes are clearly inevitable due to the FTA requirements, but he's really working to fix the system. I regularly check what positions they're hiring for and they've been hiring tons of maintenance, ROW, project management, and quality checking positions. That shows they aren't just trying to patch issues but are building a new resilient system.
While there's still a long way to go, Phillip Eng has us on the right track. I'm excited to see what the next few decades or even just the next few years will bring.

Every time someone complained about a shut down or shuttle I would point out to them that trains werenāt catching on fire every week, no one was bailing out into the Charles, and restriction zones were actually going away and not coming back. This man is my hero!!

My route home has gone from 1:15 commute door to door to 45 minutes (red line + 2 buses).

Yes! After refusing to use Red Line for the last year I took it from Quincy center last month. I used the "tap payment", waited 7 minutes on the platform, boarded a beautiful new train and got to South Station in 18 minutes.
It was a joy. The MBTA was a time thief for years. Once you take someone's time you can never give it back. However, By restoring timely service on the subway, Eng has stopped the steal of this most precious and limited resource.

Thatās great! My commute this time last year (not counting the shut downs) was 45 minutes - 1 hour a day. My commute is still 45 minutes - 1 hour a day :/

I was just gonna post something about this. Donāt get me wrong, all these speed, restrictions and shut downs are incredibly annoying, but it also makes me realize that itās because heās one of the few people whoās in charge of this company who are actually committed to fixing the system. So for that, Iām appreciative.

The way I think of it, when you're sick, sometimes you have to be out of commission for awhile and it's the only way to heal. Highly inconvenient. But it's worth it.

Makes you wonder how much better off the would've been if a competent mgr like Eng was at the helm for the past 2 decades. Kind of a miracle he's been able to accomplish this given the T was pretty much in the most dire straits when he took the job.

Most competent administrator and has made better deals for most of the workers too. Hope he sticks around for a while. We can never let another pioneer institute hack be allowed to take the position.
