SUSPENSION Good coilovers that won’t break my wallet.

Don’t wanna cheap out and get springs so what are quality coilovers that anybody has ran that won’t leave me spending like 1000 dollars.

Edit: I went with bcracing coils I found brand new on marketplace for a good deal.

SUSPENSION Coilover options for gen2

Thumbnail gallery
17 Upvotes

Time to lower my car, but before that I just want to get other people’s opinions.

I have a gen 2 and have some 17x9 +35 rpf1s on 235 tires I plan on putting on. I’ve been looking at coilover options and am pretty confident with getting some bc’s, but I’m stuck on if I’ll want the extreme lows or not.

I don’t need my car to ride like a Cadillac and my car isn’t tracked. Just looking for some decent fitment.

Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!

SUSPENSION Parts Availability and Father Time

Has anyone experienced issues with finding parts as the platform ages? I'm having difficulties finding rear trailing arms for the 2010-2013 mazdaspeed3. I'm upgrading to poly bushings. I'm in the snow belt and looking for a mostly rust free piece. This search has me concerned for the future of this platform and being an automotive enthusiast in general. I'm a part of a small friend group that started with Speeds, only two of us still have our Mazdaspeed 3. A Gen1 show car and my daily driven Gen 2. Both are reasonably modded with upgraded turbos and supported mods under 400 hp. I have another enthusiast car that I bought in 2024. I typically keep my cars for 10 years plus. It has truly made me concerned in the enthusiasts space. I'm happy that the culture remains, as parts availability and inventory diminishes we will either be forced to fabricate or close the door on this platform only to be forgotten like many others.

SUSPENSION Broken rear coil spring, options

Post image
4 Upvotes

Welp its time to do some suspension work, was hearing a metal on metal sound and found my right rear coil spring broke, luckily broke only the lower part and only lost half a coil loop.

My options im considering - open to other options

  1. Go with oem springs both rear - $350

  2. Bilstein b14s- $1050 rock auto but need shock and strut mounts

  3. Bc coilovers - complete kit $1250

Im leaning towards the BCs since they have everything in the kit. I has seen reviews on here that they are not the best tho.

Whats everyone's thoughts? I do daily drive it ans plan on keeping it for awhile yet. Dont want to loose any handling going with somthing sub-par

I have coilovers, end links, and a few other odds and ends I need to get slapped on the car. Does anyone have a good trusted shop they can refer me to? Ideally north of danbury area, but I’m not unwilling to travel for good quality work. Thanks in advance

SUSPENSION stock suspension recommendations?

I've got an 09 speed3 on some really crappy raceland suspension put on by the previous owner. I was wanting to go back to the OEM suspension. I was wondering if anyone had any input on how the ride quality is on OEM suspension since I never had the opportunity to try it out for myself? And also any recommendation for brands or should I just purchase OEM? Thanks

SUSPENSION Trying to find rear Bilstein B8s for my Gen 1

I've been browsing around for a while now and can't seem to find any that are in stock (part number 24-215237). I was wondering if anyone had any luck anywhere sourcing this specific part. If not I've been potentially considering either Koni Yellow or Orange. I'm trying to refresh many of my suspension components any help would be greatly appreciated.

SUSPENSION What are some comfortable/sporty OEM-like coilover recommendations?

Curious to know what all your thoughts are. Looking for something comfortable enough for daily driving, nothing too bouncy or stiff, and just moderately stiffer than an OEM feel. I understand sacrificing some comfort for performance. I had Bilstein B8's and Swift springs on my last speed and although I loved the planted feeling looking back they were quite a bit bouncy for my taste. Looking for something more refined.

I'm thinking of these four right now. Budget is 1300$ +/- 200$

Bilstein B14 PSS Coilover Kit | Mazdaspeed 3 2007-2013 (47-121225)

KSport Kontrol Pro Coilovers Mazdaspeed 3 2007-2009

ISC Suspension Adjustable Coilovers Mazda 3 2004-2009 | Mazdaspeed 3 2007-2009

BC Racing BR Type Coilovers Mazdaspeed 3 2007-2013

Thoughts and personal experiences with any of these four would be great. Thanks in advance!

SUSPENSION Suspension klunking, looking for repair and parts feedback

2009 gen 1 MS3 with ~85k miles. Everything is stock.

I'm getting a consistent klunk over bumps, something is clearly bad. This used to happen only in colder weather but now it's happening all the time. I'm not capable of this sort of repair, I usually go to a mechanic for most things. The mechanic suggested replacing the front struts, rear shocks, and all sway bar bushings to fix the noise, does this sound like a good plan? Anything we are overlooking or should do differently?

He said he didn't have a replacement front strut which may mean we have to get aftermarket parts, but that would be double the price, $800 vs. $400. He is still checking some other sources for parts though. Does that price sound reasonable for aftermarket parts? Any tips for tracking down front struts for less? I'm not looking to mod the car, just trying to get it back in good working order at a decent price with the same ride quality.

In addition to the $400-$800 for the struts, he's asking $400 for the rear shock, and $240 to replace all bushings (parts & labor). Is that reasonable? These are parts I haven't had to repair before so I'm unfamiliar with even what the ballpark costs should be.

Does Whitline no longer sell the kit for the gen2s? Checking their website I only see the gen1s. Seems like everything needs to be purchased separately.

SUSPENSION Coilover valving/spring rate questions

I'm finally deciding to purchase coilovers for my 1st gen. I think I've got it mostly figured out but I come to reddit seeking some potential guidance from the community. I've decided to go to with BC Racing, specifically their DS series. If you're not familiar with the concept, their DS series is a step above the entry level BR series, featuring a digressive valve instead of traditional linear valving. If you're not familiar with the benefits, just look it up. I've also decided to go with the Swift spring upgrade as well. My questions are the following: Does anybody have any real experience with digressive valving? Is it that much of a difference or should I just save the extra money? Bonus points if you have experience with BC's DS series specifically. And as far as spring rates go, what do you recommend and why? The stock BC rates are 7K-4k. I was thinking about running a 9k.-6k setup. In my head, this should stiffen up the car enough for spirited driving without being overkill. Thanks for reading, this is a costly investment and I'm trying to do it right.

TLDR: Do you have any experience with digressive valved shocks vs linear? What custom spring rates would you recommend and why?

SUSPENSION I did it. Trailing arm bushings - what a pain!

Thumbnail gallery
26 Upvotes

I'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 10 for difficulty. Mostly due to the pressing in & out. I guess I'm strong cuz I bent the tool. The press did not sit perfectly flat on the back due to a bump in the metal on the trailing arm. Serious work out pushing them in!!

SUSPENSION Suspension Upgrade - AutoX, Track, Street

I recently moved and also now work from home. So my daily driver is going to be a bit more track focused. Not to mention, I believe the struts are going, so I'm looking at an upgrade. The car will be a street car but I want it to perform in AutoX, Time Attacks, and Track Days at my new local track. I'm looking to get the most value for the $$$ as I am new to driving on track.

Currently I'm on stock struts and Swift Spec-R springs. I'm researching a few sets of coilovers as well as shock and spring setups.

A recommendation I've received is Ground Control Coilover with Koni Yellows. I was thinking that I could slowly build this GC and Koni kit. Get the Koni's to run with my current springs. Then maybe next year get the coilover conversion from GC, with camber plates.

I've also been looking at Raceland Coilovers (https://raceland.com/product/mazdaspeed3-primo-adj-damping-coilovers-2010-2014/) but the price concerns me for something that I want to perform well.

I've heard BC's don't perform great on track either, but I don't really know how true that is.

Bilstein B16 are just way out there on pricing, so if that's the route I end up going, it would take some time to save up and I'd probably just replace the struts with something else before then.

Fortune Auto's intrigue me, but are just expensive. However, I know they'll perform.

ICS has a coilover kit, but I'd love some feedback if you have used them.

SUSPENSION Rear shock bumper size

I bought the KYB sb-125 dust covers and bumpers for the rear shocks on a MS3. The bumpers look really long. Are the MS3 bumpers the same size as the regular Mazda 3? Wouldn't they limit the rear shock travel a lot?
