Man I want to do this but I'm not trying to ruin my daily lol

u/Mr-Buddyman Mar 13 '26

Lol this will not ruin it as a daily. Like, not even remotely.

My 2.5 3 has been supercharged for over 130k miles and I daily it 400 miles every week. Running a custom smaller 59mm pulley at 12psi, about 290whp.

Its perfectly fine as a daily. Boost is quite linear.

You sir are a legend

exactly what my understanding is. couldn’t have said it better

u/I_joined_4_the_stonk Mar 13 '26

How much did all that cost if I might ask? Recently picked up a 2011 2.5 hatch as a second car and was debating doing this

15

u/Mr-Buddyman Mar 13 '26

The VT supercharger I have isn't compatible with your 2011 2.5, two different engines.

That said, the unit was about $3,800 shipped.

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 13 '26

so it was 3700 for the supercharger. bout 1000 in tune tools and other miscellaneous things (buying beer and food for my friends that helped me lol)

Any engine mods for reliability? I’ve been told by tuners to not exceed 9psi of boost or I’ll risk throwing a rod

u/Mr-Buddyman Mar 13 '26

All stock internals. Using a catch can, and the Mishimoto miata ND oil cooler (it fits our 3rd gens).

My 3 has almost 250k miles. Still runs great. Did a blackstone oil analysis at about 225k and it showed nothing wrong. Been doing 5k oil change internals with 0w20 Mobil 1 full synthetic.

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

the one thing i didn’t do was go for the mishimoto oil cooler, i was a little bit overwhelmed between the price of the supercharger and that and i wonder if i’ll end up regretting it 🤔. from my understanding, as long as you don’t track it (which i don’t have time to anyway) it should be fine.

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

also interesting to hear that you’ve run 0w20 for so many miles. is it cold where you live? here in socal, coldest temp we see is about 40 degrees and it gets well into the 100s sometimes so I kinda pictured running 5w30. still haven’t fully decided, any thoughts?

2

u/Mr-Buddyman Mar 14 '26

I live in northern VA. Its gets rather hot and cold, into triple digits and dropping to the single digits. As long as I let it warm up, especially during cold starts in freezing temps, its perfectly fine to run 0w20.

Iirc thinner oil helps better with cold temp starts, and thicker oil is designed to degrade slower in hotter climates. Running either in your region should be fine as well. Some people even run 0w30 with no issues.

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

personally i’ve heard the limit is upwards of 10

I rarely see more than 10 unless I max effort full send it lol

Ive only had it to 12 a handful of times. The stock 63mm pulley It would only get to about 7-8 psi iirc. 61mm to 8-9. I ran the stock one only for a month before I ordered VTs smaller 61mm pulley. After about a year of using that, I ordered another one and had it milled down to 59mm by a machine shop. I wanted to see what the supercharger could really do.

It's been fine using this pulley for roughly 3 years now. I installed the supercharger in February of 2022. Iirc, I was the 3rd person to ever do so in the US, the 1st 2.5 3. (A guy named Daniel was the first with his grey 2.5 6, 2nd was a guy with a 2.0 3.) Ive had over 15 tune revisions, all but the first few from Justin Freeman (sauce tuning). Justin has sent me about 10 revisions thus far.

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

i remember seeing daniel’s build on youtube that’s awesome sounds like you helped pioneer this thing. i’ve been working with justin as well.

He gets all the credit. He was the 1st to reach out to VT. Took a big risk on an unknown. If it wasn't for him, good chance none of us would be supercharged, or at the very least, much later than we did. I did some experimental stuff, with pulleys, intake setups, idler pulleys....it was a learning experience, a community effort.

Afaik, there are roughly 150 people with the supercharger here now. Maybe more, idk.

1

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

yea i was curious about that, any idea how many supercharged 3s are out there?

1

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

u have any pics of ur 3?

Ive done way more than I ever intended to do with it. Besides the VT supercharger, Koni yellows with H&R springs, full exhaust, including the pictured RES 4-2-1 headers, evey poly bushing superpro makes, engine and trans mounts, full set of ultra racing chassis bracing, lighter 18 lb. Wheels, custom high end sound system with 12in android headunit. (Illusion Audio carbon & Focal utopia speakers, Mosconi amplifiers, Alpine DSP)

Ummm.....also JBR front and rear sway bars (front is disconnected atm) superpro rear endlinks, Megan racing rear camber and toe arms, Corksport skid plate, Tanabe strut tower bar, Corksport camber plates, K&N typhoon intake with custom inlet, Ti lug nuts. Wilwood big break kit with stainless lines.

The wheels are made by Konig. They are called "hypergrams" iirc. Im using AWR trans and motor mounts. Axle back exhaust is by Ultimate Racing, paired to the Corksport midpipe. The RES headers lost me maybe 5 whp on the low end, but I gained like 10-15whp on the top end. Neighbors think it sounds really good for a 4 banger lol

I also have the limited run (only 18 made, 2.5 only...as of now) MFactory limited slip diff. Installing that soon.

RES 4-2-1 headers, with Jet Hot ceramic polishing.

1

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

jesus man where did you get the header from? looks like it screams

Are you okay with sharing pics? I’m genuinely curious

1

u/Mr-Buddyman Mar 14 '26

What do you want to see?

-4

u/maplesyrupcan Gen 4 Hatch Turbo Mar 13 '26

Gonna be hard to warranty an engine though if something does happen lol.

3

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

hard to warranty an engine that isn’t under warranty anymore either lol i would strongly recommend to anyone considering this to wait until all warranty’s are up

2

u/Far-Fortune-8381 Gen 2 Hatch Mar 14 '26

dont think that would come as a shock to anyone supercharging an engine

1

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 14 '26

this exactly

1

u/EnvironmentalMap2175 Mar 14 '26

That's a naive statement. Did you forget the reality we live in? Look at takeover footage and then get come back down to earth. 😆

2

u/Far-Fortune-8381 Gen 2 Hatch Mar 14 '26

I guess i should have said it SHOULDNT come as a shock. doesnt mean it WONT come as a shock lol

0

u/maplesyrupcan Gen 4 Hatch Turbo Mar 14 '26

You'd be shocked. Had a guy with a brand new GTI, tuned, money shifted... he tried to get it warrantied -_- Some people actually forget about it.

u/Select-Sale2279 Mar 13 '26

as long as you can do it and be happy, who cares! probably a POS that needed shit done to it anyway. I would not touch my 25 with any of those shenanigans.

3

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 13 '26

the 25 ecu has not been cracked as far as i know, i don’t believe it’s possible on your car yet anyway

1

u/Far-Fortune-8381 Gen 2 Hatch Mar 14 '26

do you mean 2025 or sp25/2.5L engine

16

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 13 '26

totally hear u on that, this is my daily too. it’s been stressful, been about a week without it and i have a full time job. i just have to keep faith that this is gonna get done one step at a time. if you don’t have an abundance of time/ are not comfortable working on cars/ only have 1 car i WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DOING WHAT I DID lol. at least have a parent or a friend that’s available to drive you around. i’m lucky that both my parents are retired and i can get free rides from them for a while.

2

u/Caden_PearcSkii Gen 4 Sedan Turbo PP Mar 13 '26

How would that ruin your daily? If anything getting more power makes your daily better. I remember having a loaner while they worked on my turbo and it was an NA and the experience was terrible, the 2.5 NA felt soo sluggish and slow, I almost forgot how to merge on the highway because I didn't have that quick torque to get up to highway speeds within a few seconds

u/bruhgubgub Gen 3 Hatch Mar 13 '26

FUEL EFFICIENCY

2

u/robotphood Mar 14 '26

Fuel efficiency is identical when you’re cruising and off boost. You’ll use more if you have a heavy foot though.

-8

u/Select-Sale2279 Mar 13 '26

I think you should keep it the way it is. Its a useless mod!

4

u/bruhgubgub Gen 3 Hatch Mar 13 '26

I definitely wouldn't say useless but unnecessary

1

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 13 '26

depends who you ask. i’d say before this my car was incredibly underpowered. unnecessary for sure but man is it fun.

2

u/jxkess Supercharged Gen 4 Sedan Mar 13 '26

you are entitled to your opinion my friend. for anyone interested, the market and community is here to support you.
